In contrast with its dark exterior, the interior of this family house in Xalapa, Mexico, by Mexico City based architects @lopezgonzalezmx is swathed in white plaster and light-toned wood finishes. From ceiling beams and wall panelling to both built-in and free-standing furniture, the extensive use of wood imbues the sparsely decorated rooms with warmth despite the minimalist interior design, as well as complements the verdant views and establishes a conversation with the surrounding landscape. Offering a striking contrast to both the wood-swathed interiors and green-rich vistas, the red-hued window frames provide vibrant accents, much like flowers in a meadow, further grounding the house into its lush setting.

Located in a leafy suburb in Xalapa, a city in east-central Mexico, this family house by Mexico City-based architects @lopezgonzalezmx stands out amid the lush vegetation in its stark form and charcoal hue. Astutely modern in design, conceived as a monolithic cubic volume punctured by an irregular composition of red-framed windows, the house nevertheless harmoniously integrates into its natural setting, courtesy of its rock-like dark exterior and jagged roof line. Inside, a minimalist aesthetic and muted colour palette allows the verdant views to take centre stage while a spacious courtyard and scenic roof terrace further enhance the property’s connection with nature.

Located opposite #Paris’ oldest art school still in operation, the recently opened Hôtel des Académies et des Arts (@hoteldesacademiesetdesarts_) brings back to life Montparnasse’s historic ateliers where artists worked and socialized during the interwar period through the characterful interiors and bespoke furnishings of architecture and interior design studio @lizee_hugot, the murals of French artist Franck Lebraly, and burgeoning collection of paintings, drawings and sketches, as well as an in-house art classes and workshops organized in collaboration with the adjacent Académie de la Grande Chaumiè (@grandechaumiere_officiel) which has been fostering life drawing, painting and sculpting since 1904.

Unveiled in tandem with the opening of its new exhibition space in Palazzo Brancaccio in #Rome, “Apartamento” is the latest endeavour of @contemporary_cluster, a contemporary art and design project space dedicated to cultural promotion and multidisciplinary experimentation. Located on the palazzo’s sixth floor, the private apartment was meticulously refurbished and eclectically furnished by architect @giorgia_cerulli_, co-founder of Contemporary Cluster, whose artful mix of contemporary brands and designers is set in dialogue with the building’s architectural heritage. Featuring a playful paint colour palette, which was developed in collaboration with colour consultant @sabina_guidotti of @bludiprussiaroma, the apartment explores the modern dimension of living and highlights the pivotal role of design. Apartamento opened its doors in October with “Tout Brûle”, an exhibition of paintings and ceramic and metal vases by Paris-based Italian artist Luca Casillo @di.loer which ran until December 11, 2021.

Commissioned to convert a compact apartment in a 1970s block of flats in #Katowice, Poland, into a modern short-term rental, local interior design studio @mistovia have combined an open-plan layout with an eclectic aesthetic of vintage charm and modernist gusto. A designer’s creativity can be judged by the projects they complete but sometimes it can also be gauged from the stories they weave. Case in point, the recently opened @uncletans.drinkinghouse at the port of #Piraeus, Greece, whose playful Asian-themed interior design is complemented by an imaginative origin story. Athens-based interior, graphic and product design studio @studiomateriality have connected Singapore with Piraeus through Uncle Tan’s fictional saga which not only informed the venue’s brand identity but also inspired its design quirkiness. Swathed in saturated neon colours and peppered with whimsical surprises, Uncle Tan’s Drinking House is as seductively elusive as the life of its eponymous protagonist.

Commissioned by a foreign couple moving to Spain to refurbish a derelict apartment in a historic 19th century building in #Barcelona, Polish-born, Barcelona-based designer @szymonkeller tackled the project as much from an architectural perspective as from a sculptural angle. Drawing inspiration from the Mediterranean Sea, Keller applied a sculptural design language of organic shapes, natural finishes and sandy hues in order to conjure a nostalgic end-of-summer feeling elicited by the colours of a beach sunset. Furnished with a treasure trove of unique, handcrafted pieces, many of which have been designed by Keller himself, the project epitomizes an artisanal approach to interior design.

Housed in a petit, fairy tale-like house in #Moscow, the second outpost of Israeli café Abu Gosh eschews stylistic clichés of the Middle East for a funky aesthetic of bold, candy-shop colours and playful geometric patterns. Russian architecture and design practice @studio_shoo (who were also responsible for the interior design of the café’s sister venue) have channelled Israel’s exuberant spirit through a graphic language of geometric abstraction and vibrant hues while preserving the quirkiness of the historic building.

Located in #Kiev’s historic neighbourhood of Podil, @619studio eschews the vintage aesthetic of your typical tattoo parlour for minimalist sophistication and sculptural simplicity. Interior architects @balbekbureau designed the space as a contemporary art workshop to reflect the Studio’s founder Ukrainian artist @nesheva_ulyana’s creative ethos. As she says, “simplicity is the ultimate goal and the highest form of complexity.”
Aiming for an open-plan configuration, the team removed all the doors and increased the height of the existing openings between the reception area, studio space and artists’ lounge, as well as added new ones, intentionally exposing the plasterboard, brick and foam wall construction. A bespoke 400-kilo graphite concrete table that snakes its way from the entrance vestibule to the lounge serving as both a reception desk and work surface for the artists, further enhances the project’s sculptural sensibility with its sinuous form and hand-beaten rough edges, as does the sculpture of a boy by Ukrainian artist Сhristina Ridzel that greets visitors.
