There seems to be a pill for everything nowadays, thankfully even for Covid-19 (which could be a game-changer in the battle against the pandemic), and yet, one problem persists: in contrast to the western world’s overmedication, poorer nations don’t have access to affordable medicine. A 2015 fundraising campaign for the Dutch AIDS Foundation by branding & design studio @dogandpony_ams and consultancy @suebehaviouraldesign drew attention to this paradox by making fun of our inability to see beyond our first world bubble. Have you ever wished for the ability to see unicorns, perfectly time your jokes, or make your farts smell like parfum? The cheekily named “First World Problems Store” had just the right pill for you! Needless to say, the peppermint placebos didn’t deliver on their lofty promises but they did something much more consequential - all profits from the Store went into providing HIV medication for those who can’t afford it.

Colombian-Canadian photographer Gabriel Puyana @gfpuyana is known as the “Master of the Setting Sun” with good reason: his photographs of his home town of Toronto during nightfall reveal the kaleidoscopic phantasmagoria that is the setting sun. German-born, American photographer Alfred Eisenstaedt is best known for his iconic V-J Day kiss image in Times Square but his legacy extends far beyond a single image. One of the first photojournalists to favour a small 35mm film camera and natural lighting, Eisenstaedt was a pioneer of a more informal, unposed style of portraiture. Working for Life magazine from 1936 to 1972, he photographed a wide range of subjects around the world, from Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway and Marilyn Monroe, to ice-skating waiters in St. Moritz, female Ama divers in Japan, and members of the Greek Presidential Guard getting dressed in Athens. No matter the subject, his photographs were always candid and thus timeless.

In contrast with its dark exterior, the interior of this family house in Xalapa, Mexico, by Mexico City based architects @lopezgonzalezmx is swathed in white plaster and light-toned wood finishes. From ceiling beams and wall panelling to both built-in and free-standing furniture, the extensive use of wood imbues the sparsely decorated rooms with warmth despite the minimalist interior design, as well as complements the verdant views and establishes a conversation with the surrounding landscape. Offering a striking contrast to both the wood-swathed interiors and green-rich vistas, the red-hued window frames provide vibrant accents, much like flowers in a meadow, further grounding the house into its lush setting.

Located in a leafy suburb in Xalapa, a city in east-central Mexico, this family house by Mexico City-based architects @lopezgonzalezmx stands out amid the lush vegetation in its stark form and charcoal hue. Astutely modern in design, conceived as a monolithic cubic volume punctured by an irregular composition of red-framed windows, the house nevertheless harmoniously integrates into its natural setting, courtesy of its rock-like dark exterior and jagged roof line. Inside, a minimalist aesthetic and muted colour palette allows the verdant views to take centre stage while a spacious courtyard and scenic roof terrace further enhance the property’s connection with nature.

Working with local artisans across Africa and the Middle East in a variety of mediums, French multidisciplinary artist and designer Louis Barthélemy @louisbarthelemy creates contemporary artworks and artefacts based on centuries-old techniques, driven by his commitment to conserving and supporting vernacular handicrafts threatened by globalization. Inspired by the mystical universe of Senegalese wrestling which Barthélemy immersed himself during a trip to #Dakar, his latest series of appliquéd tapestries, “Wrestlers”, evocatively encapsulates the anthropological-informed approach of his practice as well as reflects the diverse influences behind his work. Made with “bazin”, a type of cotton brocade popular in West Africa, the quilt-like tapestries were handcrafted in Cairo in collaboration with Egyptian artisans who practice “khayamiya”, a type of decorative appliqué technique historically used to decorate tents across the Middle East. On view at Théodore Monod Museum of African Art in Dakar until January 20, 2022.

Sitting adjacent to the entrance of @ngadc National Gallery of Art’s East Building in Washington, DC, Henry Moore’s monumental “Knife Edge Mirror Two Piece” epitomise the artist’s late period which was defined by powerful, complex abstract forms, experimentation with materials and scale, and a new dynamic relationship with architecture. Commissioned by the museum in 1973 to design a grand sculpture for East Building’s Pennsylvania Avenue façade, Moore developed Knife Edge Mirror Two Piece in collaboration with the building’s architect I.M. Pei despite his acknowledged aversion to architects and architectural commissions – perhaps a sign of his maturing sensibilities. That’s not to say that the 4-year process was all smooth sailing, Moore’s insistence on being able to see the sculpture from all sides that for all his meant that I.M. Pei had to redesign the original pedestal into a triangular promontory jutting out from the terrace.

No space is too vast or too small to be filled by our thoughts and our reveries, especially those spaces that comprise what we call ‘home’, according to French philosopher Gaston Bachelard. In his seminal book “The Poetics of Space”, which was published in French in 1957 and translated into English in 1964, Bachelard takes readers on a lyrical journey, examining the domestic places that shape and hold our dreams and memories, from cellars and attics, to drawers, chests, and wardrobes, to nooks and corners. Unveiled in tandem with the opening of its new exhibition space in Palazzo Brancaccio in #Rome, “Apartamento” is the latest endeavour of @contemporary_cluster, a contemporary art and design project space dedicated to cultural promotion and multidisciplinary experimentation. Located on the palazzo’s sixth floor, the private apartment was meticulously refurbished and eclectically furnished by architect @giorgia_cerulli_, co-founder of Contemporary Cluster, whose artful mix of contemporary brands and designers is set in dialogue with the building’s architectural heritage. Featuring a playful paint colour palette, which was developed in collaboration with colour consultant @sabina_guidotti of @bludiprussiaroma, the apartment explores the modern dimension of living and highlights the pivotal role of design. Apartamento opened its doors in October with “Tout Brûle”, an exhibition of paintings and ceramic and metal vases by Paris-based Italian artist Luca Casillo @di.loer which ran until December 11, 2021.

There’s something viscerally exhilarating about the typographic work of Seattle-based graphic designer Tyler Spangler @tyler_spangler which he describes as “a rainbow flavoured popsicle dipped in the ocean and placed on a rock to melt”. “Is all that we see or seem, but a dream within a dream?”, Edgar Allan Poe poignantly asked in one of his poems in 1849, an existential query that has crossed all of our minds at some point (usually during sleepless nights). In fact, the concept of life as illusion has been gnawing at human consciousness since time immemorial, from ancient shamans who called the surface of life a dream, to Plato’s Allegory of the Cave, to the philosophical musings of Descartes and Kant, to popular culture – think The Matrix, Inception and pretty much most of David Lynch’s filmography. After a pandemic-prompted hiatus, @designmiami was back on track for its 17th edition which took place between December 1 – 5. Welcoming visitors at this year’s fair was Tomorrow Land, a public installation by Portland and Brooklyn-based multidisciplinary designer @alexproba that has transformed the Miami Design District (@miamidesigndistrict) into an interactive playground bursting with candy-bright colours, organic shapes and zany patterns. Designed in Proba’s signature style, the 21 large-scale sculptures marry the dreamlike surrealism of Salvador Dali, the energizing exuberance of Keith Haring and the zany mischievousness of the Memphis Group. Complemented by an interactive, virtual game from Portland-based design practice Enjoy the Weather, the fun-packed installation “harnesses”, in curators @anavaprojects’ words, “the power of design to spread a little joy and a sense of community”, a lofty mission matched by a deserving timeframe – on view until May 2022 with a selection of sculptures staying put as permanent fixtures.

One of our favourite designs by English designer Chris Martin for Stockholm-based furniture company @massproductions, the Crown Armchair has been reinvented by Geneva-based artist and illustrator Flora Mottini @fuluwatu in psychedelic fashion. The project is the first instalment of “The Crown Jewels”, a series of collaborations where four artists have been invited to recondition eight worn Crown Armchairs. Drawing from science fiction images and cartoons of the 1930-50s, Mottini’s work is imbued with a surrealist, psychedelic sensibility that draws you in. This is also the case here, with the artist swathing the chairs in soft foam material (sourced from leftovers from previous art projects) whose pleated form turns the chairs into sculptures. The series demonstrates the possibilities of restoration in line with Massproductions’ focus on sustainability, and in particular its mission to minimize waste, and comes in tandem with the launch of Face Lift, a global network of skilled upholsterers that aims to simplify the care and restoration of customers’ existing furniture.
