“Agh!” You screamed from down the hall, with your head in our hands. You paced back and forth, eyes glowing a dark menacing red, almost like blood.

“Who does he think he is?!” You seethed out loud through your teeth to no one. “I am not his puppet! He can’t control me!”

Your breathing was hard and it took you every ounce of strength to not collapse the building you’re in with a single flick of your wrist. He knows you can’t be or act like him…. it’s just not in your code, you’re much different than him.

“He always has to butt in! How am I supposed to be confident with my actions when he still doesn’t trust me?” You still asked to no one but rather more yourself. “It’s not fair…..”

“What’s not fair?” His deep familiar voice said from behind you.

Not bothering to turn around you answer: “You…. who you are. It’s not fair”

His features soften a bit. “Jane.” He starts but you quickly shoot back a glare at him.

He holds a hand up, “Right. (Y/n). Sorry.”

You then roll your eyes and start walking away. “I quit.”

“Just like that? You’re just going to quit?” He catches up to you. “What happen to proving them wrong huh? Your father believed in you.”

“Don’t!” You turn around quickly and point a finger at him with gritted teeth. “You shut your mouth. You of all people shouldn’t be saying that about father figures.”

When you turned back around he caught your arm and pulled you close. “I’m sorry…. I shouldn’t have said that. Stay…. please.” He said softly and you look up to see his gentle smile.

You sighed heavily and dropped your head back with your eyes closed. “I can’t be like you…” you said lowly, not sure to him or you but he heard your voice clearly.

“I’m not asking you to. I want you to be yourself.” He says sincerely, looking at your features for any sign of something.

With a small hint of a smirk you asked; “Are you sure about that?” Reminding him of the last time he said that you got a little too out of control and practically tried to rip his head off.

He smiled at the memory because oddly enough, that’s when he really started to fall in love with you. The fire you had, the drive and the strength; it matched him perfectly where he actually had to put up a fight.
Fast and strong will driven, all that attracted him to you even more. There was a spark in your eyes when you fought and he wanted to see more of it.

You didn’t start out as a good guy either but more of a ametuar villian just coming out and when he first met you, there was something about you that he couldn’t exactly figure out but he liked it.

He would try to avoid physical fights but more try to persuade you into changing sides. Of course you would get frustrated with him as it felt like he wasn’t taking you serious so you would try harder with every encounter you had with him.

At first they started out as minor things like stealing a bike or something electronic from a cheap store but as time pass you got bolder with your powers and that’s when the serious crimes started.

Robbing banks and destroying buildings. At that point he had no choice but to take you serious because you were deliberately trying to hurt people and you were now being seen as the villain you wanted to be.

People feared you and gangs were too scared to cross you so you had control of the streets. But then something happen, your father got sick and ended up in the hospital. He was sick before but it got worse to the point of being in the ICU and he didn’t know about your double life of a War Lord of the streets.
Every night when you got home and would check on him in his room he always warned you to be careful out there as there was someone causing chaos in the streets. Innocently, you would reassure him hiding this secret for the soul fact that robbing these banks and controlling contraband was to pay for his bills and he would get the best doctors.

Even with all the money you had and the medical help you can provide there was no saving him. You didn’t want to accept the fact that there was no way to save him.

Days past since his funeral and you were still in denial, you destroyed everything you created and built, and went on a rampage of rage. You cursed at the sky and buildings shook while people screamed and ran for they’re lives.

Your hands glowed a angry red and you shot out randomly not caring what they hit, tears streaked down your dirty cheeks and cars were being blown up.

Superman floated above, watching you, he felt your pain and he knew what was wrong. Silently he descended down and gently put a hand on your shoulder, you reacted but not in the way he thought you would. Instead of turning around and lashing at him you just lowered your hands, the red dimming and slumped to the floor. Your sobs grew softer and dust started to clear up.

“I’m sorry….” He simply said, and stood next to you.

You stayed silent, numbingly staring at a piece of rubble from a fallen building that you blew up.
“I could have done more” you said ever so above a whisper.

Those words sunk into him, he felt the same about his own father.

“We’re not invincible,” he replies.

“Are you kidding?” You turn your head to look up back at him and then you got up. “You’re Superman. You’re seen as some God. Nothing can kill you.”

He looked away, not sure what to say.

“That’s what I thought.” You almost spit out of jealous. When you walked away he called to you, you hesitated but stopped.

“What?” You yell back.

“What happen to you isn’t fair and I know why you did what you did. I’m sorry that had to happen to you but please– you’re not alone.”

“What do you mean?” You then turn around.

“This power that you have, it’s incredible and you can be good. Show these people that anyone could have a bad day and still be the best. Show them that its possible to keep climbing to the top– even when the hill turns into a mountain.”

“You want me to be a hero like you?”

“Be your own hero.”

“My hero died.” You said coldly and turned around.

He didn’t respond after that but let you go, you needed to grieve but he waited.

Two Years later here you were in the hallway with him, bickering like an old couple.

“Please don’t give up.”

Another moment passed and you sighed, “Okay!….okay. I won’t but please lay off. I’m trying my best.” He smiled and nodded; “Deal.”

He gave a warm smile, that same smile that always calms you down. The man in front of you as been by your side non stop since that day, the day you thought you were done. But he gave you hope, save for the ‘S’ symbol on his chest.
You needed a friend and someone for support and he was there in a heart beat. That’s what you loved about him the most, and you also loved him too but you will never tell him that. How can you? You got blood on your hands and he’s….. too pure. All he’s tried to do is good in his life, you can never match up to him.

“Let’s head back.” He says comfortingly and you nod, following him.

-

“He dresses like a bat?” You practically laugh out as you watch the news.

Clark walked up around you and sipped his coffee as he watched the tv. “He’s doing no good in this city with his vigilante actions. It’s just adding fuel to the fire.”

You turn your head with raised brows, “And what are you doing exactly on your spare time huh mister super man?” You said teasingly, and nudged him with your elbow.

He shakes his head with a small smirk on his lips, “I don’t kill anyone unlike some people.” He takes another sip of his coffee.

“Hey!” You push him hard but of course he barely moves. “Take it back!”

“I will when you do!” He chuckles taking a few steps away from you.
“Na-uh Kent! You take it back! That was low and you know it.” You start to follow him.

“Was it?” He gives that cheeky smile that showed his teeth, furthering himself from you, knowing exactly where this was going.

“Oh, honey. It was was low enough to be buried six feet under.” You purse your lips, swaying your hips side to side as you made your way slowly to him. a mischievous grin plastered on your face.

“Yeah?” he winks at you. Rounding in front of the couch, he sets his cup of coffee down, not wanting to risk spilling it although that should be the least of his problems right now as you were ready to pounce on him.

“Yeah.” You reply, nearing him now; your tongue sticking out just a little since you were now concentrating on his next move. He watched, just for a millisecond how your lips looked so good he almost wanted to just let you tackle him just so he can sneak a kiss.

But he missed you just by inches, after all, you were able to catch up with him.

You two ran around like a bunch of kids playing tag, running a couple of circles around some furniture. Until finally you had enough and jumped over the couch, knocking him down with you.

“Got you!” You laugh pinning his arms above his head while you straddled his hips. He chuckles, “Not exactly.” and in one swift motion you were now the one under him with your arms above your head.

“Nice try sweet heart but I’m Superman.” He winks down at you.

“More like pooperman!” You say with a smile.

He squints his eyes but can’t help the smile that crept to his lips.

“Well? You win, so now what?” You ask leaning your head a little to the side.

He looked into your eyes silently, taking in every detail of them; the patterns in your irises, every line, every tiny color the light above enticed. The way your pupils expanded as he grew closer. The faint pulse rising from your neck, the small specks of freckles scattered across your cheeks from sunlight. The tiny scar above your brow all the way down to your waiting lips.

“Clark?” you said ever so above a whisper which pulled him back from his thoughts.

Mindlessly ke lowered himself and pressed his lips to yours, a tiny squeal of surprise rose in your throat but you relaxed into it and closed your eyes.

Warm and so soft, exactly how he thought your lips would feel. His hands went from your arms to cup your cheeks, deepening the kiss and you brought your hands to his sides, pulling him closer to you.

He buried his fingers in you hair, his tongue skimming your bottom lip, begging for entrance, happily you let him in. Wanting more of him you wrapped your legs around his waist, he pushed his pelvis into you, the friction not enough.

You were the first to pull away, “Wait. We can’t do this.” Your breathed in, opening your eyes.

He looked into them, those ocean blues making you weak. “Is something wrong?” he says softly but with concern.

“No just–.” you sighed, dropping your head to the floor, Clark quickly putting his hand beneath but you ignored it. “we can’t do this. We’re partners, not lovers. You’re Superman!” you say louder turning your head to the side.

He furrowed his brows down at you, “What does that supposed to mean?” He lifted himself, resting on his knees.

You propped yourself on your elbows, “I mean, there’s no way this” you point between the both of you, “will never work.”

“What?” He gets up placing his hands on his hips.

“Oh c’mon on Clark! Don’t act surprised.” You scoff getting up on your feet.

“Why do you think that?”

“Uh–hello?” You wave your hands around, “Ex-bad guy remember?”

He shook his head, “I thought you put that behind?” He raises his voice.

“I did! But you know what?” You scoff again walking to the kitchen. You placed your hands on the edge of the countertop, hanging your head low.

Silence fell into the atmosphere, it settled like a thick blanket, uneasy and tight.

“Apparently some people can’t seem to do the same.” You scoff once again and looked back at him.

He kept his eyes trained on the floor.

“I knew it. I fucking knew it. You haven’t changed one bit. I’m such an idiot.” you laugh to yourself, feeling the tears prick out.

“Just say it Kent.” Your voice clip. “I’m still the bad guy right? Keeping me close under your radar just so I won’t cause chaos? Real good plan. Gotta say, you fooled me.” You almost chuckled, giving your head a pat on the head with one of your hands.
“I almost fell for it. Thinking I can turn my life around, be the good guy, not perfect but good. You know? Boy was I a fool!” You then gripped the counter and tore a corner off and dropped it on the wood floor.

“(Y/n)–” He barely took a step towards you but you turn swinging your hand around, a red light illuminating the room and sending Clark, furniture and anything possible back.
“Don’t!” You yelled.

He landed on the other side of the living room, but before he could get up you were out the front door with your things in hand.

Since magic was a weakness for him and your forte it was easy to block him out, for days, months.

You didn’t see him and he couldn’t see you, hear you or even sense your heartbeat. You were good at that. All the other times you two fought you would do this but not for this long.

He was worried, he felt like an idiot for not speaking up. Telling you the truth. He just stood there like a moron watching you hurt instead of bringing you in his arms. And things with the city of Metropolis isn’t going too well either. Of course people noticed your place of absence when ever Superman was seen.

No one trusted him, some people say he’s a hero while others say he’s a false god. The council surely didn’t want him around, he was stuck on what to do.

Is this how you felt when you were trying to do good? He could only imagine what went on in your head during those times; the embarrassment, humiliation, guilt, shame.

He didn’t think about that or even ask how you felt.

He closed his eyes and sighed, shaking his head. “Fucking idiot…” he said to himself.

“You okay?” He heard the mask bat say from behind.

“Yeah…” he answered half assed.

“We can’t stop it. We need a plan,” Diana landed just a few feet from them.

Lex let loose a monster, he called it Doomsday, made from the mutation of his blood and General Zodd’s corpse.

“It’s a long shot but, I know someone that can help. Someone powerful.” He spoke up. Batman turn to him, “The girl? Is that a good idea.”

“It’s the best idea I got.” Superman shrugged his shoulders a little.

“Go get her. We’ll keep it busy till then. Hurry.” Diana said sternly jumping back into the battlefield, Batman close behind.

You put two scoops of sugar into your the light brown liquid and gave it a few rounds of stirring then you clinked the spoon against the cup edge and took a sip of the warm coffee.

After a satisfied sigh you put the cup down and breathed in deeply.

“Hey Clark.” you said turning around to see the cape crusade in that all too familiar blue, skin tight outfit of his. He stood patiently on your balcony, eyes on nothing but you. They looked…. pained.

“(Y/n),” he said softly.

The sound of his voice made you almost cry, you’ve missed him so much.

“I know why you’re here.” You point to the tv showing the fight between the monster Doomsday and Batman with a mysterious woman.

“Will you help?”

“Of course. But I have to know…” you walked over to your open balcony.

He watched as you neared him, hesitant to take your hand but entwined your fingers in his while your other hand rested on his shoulder.

“Did you ever have faith in me? Did you think I could really do good?”

He nodded in silence. “I never doubted you.”

You nodded this time, tracing the ‘S’ symbol on his chest.

“I love you.” He said and you looked up at him.

Again, he took the opportunity to look into your eyes, those same patterns were still there, you even got a little more light freckles and he smiled to himself.

You kissed him, softly, the same passion from both ends like the first time.

“I love you too.” you say back.

He laughs shakily, “I promise, with all my heart. I will be better.”

“Don’t get sappy on me dork,” you lightly hit his chest.

“You’re have to get used to it.” He replied kissing you on the cheek.

You both laughed and then it fell silent.

“It’s not easy huh?” You spoke. “Being seen as the bad guy all the time?”

He shook his head.

“Well,” you shrug. “Let’s bag ourselves a monster.”

Tears stained your dirt covered cheeks, this thing was stronger than you thought. The only way to kill it was with the kryptonite spear Batman had made, you managed to distract the thing long enough for Clark to pierce its chest with it.

A smile formed on your cheek but it quickly faltered when you saw the stump on it’s arm grow out a long thick horn. It was going to stab him through the chest.

“No!” You yell jumping in front of it and took the blow.

“(Y/n)!” You heard Clark cry out before he took the advantage of digging the spear deeper Doomsday’s chest. A bright green light shined from it’s mouth and eyes sockets before it collapsed onto the ground throwing both you and Clark opposite directions.

Clark ran to you as fast as he could only to see you were already gone, blood coming out the corner of your mouth. He pulled you into his arms, tears falling on your cheek.

“No…..no…” he said lowly, wiping the hair away from your face. “(Y/n) please, wake up…”

He cupped your cheek, shaking your face lightly.

A hand gripped his shoulder softly, he turned halfway to see Diana and Batman standing silently behind. “I got her.” She said.

Hesitantly he nodded and Diana came around to pick your body up and carried it away from him.

The funeral was small and quick, not many people showed as you didn’t know much. Diana and Bruce showed for support of course.

He stood where you were buried, breathing in the cool morning air. “I miss you (Y/n). I wish we had more time but you had to be the hero, you always were one, people just didn’t  see it.

Your death is not in vain, I promise you. I love you and people will know who saved them. Your hero may have died but you died as one.”

He smiles at you and answers, “Sure. What do you want to do?”

You thought for a moment, where can we go?
“Um, anywhere? I guess. It doesn’t matter to me I just don’t want to be home.”

He nods in understanding and turns to grab his bicycle. “Well hop on.” He then straddles his seat. You look at him, dumbfounded. “Wait, what?” You were caught off guard of by that.

He gestures to the handles of his bike with a nod. “Get on. I promise you won’t fall.”

You stood there with a raised brow while eyeing the bike in uncertainy, not sure if he was serious.
“Are you for real? Is that legal?” You ask.

He shrugs his shoulders. “I don’t know but I’m willing to find out.”

Unsure but excited you take a look around at the people before walking over to Clark’s bike and climbing onto the handles. He holds out his hand and you take it for support.
“There you go.” He says; “Put your feet on the pegs.”

You do as he says then he grabs hold of your waist and leans you back against his chest. You were flushed against him, feeling his warm breath down your neck.
“I got you.” He speaks lowly. His mouth just mere centimeters from your ear. By now your cheeks were definitely a different shade and you were hoping he can’t see from where he’s at.

“Alright here we go. Hold on.” He stands on the pedals as he pushes, making sure you were leaning back on him. Feeling his warmth made your heart flutter, this was fun. You were smiling and so was he as you passed people and the wind started to pick up.

“Whoa! Clark! Hey!” You shouted, whole body tensed and trying to stay balanced.
“I got you Y/n,” he says cooly with a smile, leaning forward more so you can use his shoulder to lean back on

You couldn’t believe what you were doing; here you were on the handle bars of Clark’s bike while he sped through downtown Metropolis during rush hour and both of you didn’t seem to care. Though people of all kinds, from having baby strollers to other cyclists, jump out of the way before you two could plummet into them.

“We’re gonna crash into something,” you yelled but it started to turn into a giggle as you were enjoying yourself not feeling any danger at all, it’s like Clark himself was your safe point.

“I promise you we won’t,” he laughs back, enjoying seeing you smile and laugh. Just as he said that he didn’t notice that the street you two were headed towards had turned green and cars began to move through.
His eyes and yours went wide when you both were about to cross over the edge of the sidewalk until Clark braked hard sending you flying towards oncoming traffic.
You panicked and closed your eyes, throwing your hands forward to break what ever will hit you but nothing did. Slowly your eyes open and you were still safely on the sidewalk, then you felt a warm arm wrapped around your middle. Your head turns to see Clark holding you against him and his bike thrown back a few feet from you two.

“I got you,” he whispers still holding you to him.

“How did you do that?” You ask, trying to figure out how he had time to jump off the bike, throw it to the side and manage to catch you even though you were sent flying.

“Adrenaline, I guess.” He shrugs his shoulders, shaking off how fast he was to save you. “Are you okay?” He asks

You nod, still feeling shaken about the situation. “I’m good.” Your voice squeaked a little at the end. His eyes scan your face, making sure you were actually okay then he gave a guilty look. “Okay. I’m sorry about that. I wasn’t paying attention. It won’t happen again, ever.”

Tucking your bangs behind your ear, you shake your head. “Don’t sweat. We’re both okay, that’s all that matters.” You smile at him so he knew that you meant it and once he did, both of you continued on foot to a unknown destination.

You two were taking a stroll through the quiet side of the city, away from busy streets and crowded sidewalks. It was peaceful, the sun just started to set, leaving a warm glow of yellow and pink. The air was cool and the crickets began to chirp.

“So how’s life been? I haven’t seen you for awhile.” You point out to Clark. A small grin appears on his lips as he looks down at you;
“It’s been good. Just busy with work. You?”

You shrug. “Same as always only now I have to start applying for jobs in the city and get started on my life.”

He agrees with a nod of his head. “Are you excited for graduation?”

“Yes!” You answer immediately with a enthusiastic tone. Your child like behavior of excitement made him giggle.

“Are you going?” You ask turning and walking backwards behind him.

“Of course,” he says. “Why would I miss something so important to you.”

His answer made you smile. “Thanks Clark. And Lois is going of course?”

“Uh,” he begins. You pause in your tracks at his answer.

“’Uh’ what?”

His mouth tightened into a thin line then curved, followed by his eyes making a ‘not so sure’ look. “She might be out of town around that time.”

You took in a deep breath, not liking that. “You’ve got to be kidding me?” you said in a exasperated tone, slouching your body. “She promised me!”

“Hey but I’ll be there. That’s something.” He shrugs, not sure what to say.

He was right. He’s your best friend and your go to person when you need to talk to someone and never has he rejected you so this was something.

“You’re right. As long as you’re there I’ll be okay.”

At your words he gives a warming smile, then out of nowhere a loud grumble emerged from your body. Clark raises his brows then laughs, “Okay so now that we got that out of the way let’s get you something to eat.”

Red cheeks, you agreed with a quick nod as you walked side by side with him with your hands over your stomach.

Luckily for the two if you, there was a pizzeria near by just around the corner, it was small but had a home feeling to it. It stood out like a sore thumb; the lights buzzed and flickered and only a few people were working including the manager; he was a nice man, he complimented how good you two looked together as a couple. ‘I can see the romance burning between you two!’ He said in his native tongue, his son had to apologize with an embarrassed look when you clarified to them that you and Clark were just friends.

After they left to the back to take care of your order you and Clark took a seat at the only table there with two chairs that sat at the corner. It was small but then again this was a ‘go to and leave’ kind of shop; you get your food and walk off.

Poor Clark, he was a big guy so it was amusing seeing him keep shifting to get a comfortable position.
“Do you want to trade spots? I can fit in that corner.”

“No. No. No” he kept saying. “I’m okay.”

After another two minutes of seeing him keep changing positions you sighed with a shake of your head. “That’s it, we’re trading. Get up Kent.”

He slouches his body onto the seat, feeling defeated and got up so you can sit down. “Better?” You ask seeing him not move so much in his seat.

With red cheeks he nods, “Yeah. Thanks Y/n.” He says sheepishly.

“What would you do without me Clark?” You said leaning back into your seat and crossing your arms, smiling at him.

“Honestly, I don’t know.” He answers leaning forward and placing his elbows on the table.

“Me neither…” you say quietly to yourself, wondering if you’ll be able to ever get over him.

Silence settled between you two, both thinking of the same thing without the other one knowing it. Until the son approached your table with a large pizza cluttered with olives, mushrooms, spinach and pepperonis. He then settled two plates and said he’ll be back with your drinks.

The smell hit your nostrils and you hummed, eager to dig into the Italian delicousy. “Whoa there tiger,” Clark cooed, seeing your hunger rising as he set your plate and his.

You didn’t listen and grabbed a slice from the tray, strings of melting cheese trailed over the table, light coat of grease over the pie. It looked beautiful to you.

The first bite was hot and full of flavor, you didn’t care that it was burning your mouth, you were just really hungry. Clark also was stuffing his face and taking in the deliciousness.

After a few slices you two sat back with fully bellies.
“That was needed.” You huffed out. Clark hummed in agreement then he suddenly burped loudly, you two were quiet then you smiled at him but then you burped loudly too.

Quickly you covered your mouth and looked at Clark in embarrassment, a smile slowly crept on his lips and he started laughing, you shortly joined in. Tears streaming from your eyes and stomach starting to feel sore from so much laughing.

After a few more moments of laughter it quieted down and left you two to silently stare at each other.
Clark watched you with admiration in his eyes, you were the perfect girl to him and though there was flaws, that is what made you perfect.

He opened his mouth to say something, “Y/n?”

Your eyes looked to him and he couldn’t help that gaze you would give him every time he called for you. “Yeah?” You asked with a tinge of a smile on your lips and a little of curiosity in your voice.

He took in a deep breath, careful of his next words. “I have to tell you something..” his voice trailed off. Your heart sped up a bit, what did he want? Is it about the other night?

“Listen Clark if you’re still on about what happen at the park–it’s okay. I understand. You don’t need to keep feeling guilty about it.” You reached for his hand and rubbed his knuckles gently with a soft smile.

He returned one back but he shook his head, “No there’s more to that. I don’t know how to tell you this–”

“–Then don’t. Wait until you’re absolutely ready but for now can we just enjoy this night?” You look to your side at the quiet night. He stared at you and nodded, “Of course Y/n. I’m sorry.”
“You can apologize by walking with me.” You stood and held your hand to him.

He took it and stood walking with you to his bike, he grabbed it and you wrapped an arm around his to lean against him as you two walked together.
“It’s nice right now.” You said leaning your head on his arm.

He nods in agreement looking up at the white sparkles in the black sky, “It sure is.”

A tear drop of water landed on his cheek making him wipe it off. “Looks like it’s going to rain.” He pointed out right before more drops of water started to come down.

“Damn, my camera.” You sigh as you rushed for cover under an awning.

The calm rainstorm cornered you two, unable to get anywhere without risking getting soaked.

You opened your camera bag to make sure none of your equipment was damaged.
“Is everything okay?” Clark asked over the storm. You give him a thumbs up as you continued to fiddle through the lenses and cables. “So far looks like everything is okay.” You answer.

“That’s good. I’m glad. Sorry about the storm.” He gestures his his chin.

“You kidding?” You scoffed at him as you zipped up your bag and put it down where it was safe. He looked at you.

“Rain storms are the best!” You shout and darted out to the empty streets. Spinning around the puddles with your arms above your head.

Clark smiles softly.

“C’mon Clark! Not afraid of a little water are you?” The teasing in your tone caused him to raise a brow at you.

“It that a dare, (Y/n)?” Your name resonates from his cool deep voice.

You lick your bottom lip and giggle a bit, knowing full well what you just started.

With narrowed, predator like eyes not leaving you he pushes himself off the wall and lifts the strap of his bag from across his chest and settles it down next to your camera bag. He then proceeds to start walking from the warmth of under the awning and towards you.

Your feet start to slowly back yourself away, ready to run the other way from him. His long legs carried him with only a few lengthy strides and he as only a few feet from you.

You zipped off, both of you running around trash cans and trees on the sidewalk, you used every possible obstacle you can to slow him down but somehow he was more cunning and quick.

You smiled and laughed, able to just slip his grasp, feeling his finger tips just grazing your arms and slightest tugs of your shirt.

When you looked back you didn’t see him until you ran right into him, there he wrapped his arms firmly around you and he spun you around.

You yelped at the surprise, placing your hands on his shoulders.

Slowly he stopped and you two settled against each other, both breathing hard from running around and then you started to shiver.
“You’re cold,” he said with concern, feeling his arms tighten a bit to bring you closer.
“I-I’m fine.” You smiled up at him.

The street light from above highlighted the droplets on your plump lips. His eyes cast down at them and you noticed, one of his hands found they’re way to the back of your head and held you in place as he slowly closed his eyes and brought his face closer to yours and paused.

“Clark….” you said in a sweet whisper, urging him to go further with his actions, your hands gripping the collar of his shirt.

He grinned in response, pleased with your reaction and grazed your lips with his. Just that teeniest, tiniest touch set your skin ablaze, your heart was in your throat and you couldn’t breath but none of that mattered, what matters is this moment.

One of your hands cupped his cheek, as he continued the tease, he wanted to remember this as you.

His lips were soft just like you imagined, his taste was sweet and even in the cold rain you felt the heat from his body and his mouth was an even higher temperature.

His tongue grazed your bottom lip, begging for entry and you obliged. He indulged in your soft touch, holding you closer to him, afraid that something might pull you away.

The kiss was hot and wet, exactly how you pictured it would be.

You two pulled away, faces inches from each other. A wide smile appeared on both your faces.
“I’ve been wanting to do that for a long time. I’m in love with you (Y/n).” Clark said with a hoarse voice. There. He said it. He finally fucking said it.

You let out a shaky laugh, keeping your eyes closed. “Fuck. I’ve always wanted to say that to you. Guess you beat me?”

His then opens his eyes in shock. “Really?” A hopeful tone.

You nodded then a phone rang.

You both look to your bags.

“Sounds like yours.” You said.

“I’ll check it later. Probably Louis.” He shrugged off looking back at you.

Then realization dawned on you. Quickly you pushed yourself away from him and covered your mouth with your hands.

“What?” Clark asks puzzled. “What is it? What’s wrong”

“This is wrong. Oh this is wrong on so many levels! What am I doing?!” You shout walking to your bags.

“I’m so sorry Clark! I shouldn’t have done that!” You then proceed to take out your phone and message Bruce to pick you up, he replies quickly that he’s around the area. You turn on your phone gps signal for him to find you.

“What? What are you talking about?” He asks quickly as he grabs his bag and bike.

“This was so wrong. I knew it! You’re so stupid (Y/n)!” You shake your head as you continue to walk away from him.

“(Y/n)! Please! Talk to me! Please!” He begs as his softly grabs your arm. He turns you around but you kept your head down. “No this is wrong.”

He cupped your cheeks to face you to him and he saw the tear trails. “Did I do something wrong? I’m sorry if I did.” He was worried and confused, what happen to the happy moment?

You cried more and just shook your head. “I’m horrible. Louis is a good friend how can I do this to her!”

He furrowed his brows for a moment to think and then put the pieces together. She thinks he’s with Louis.

“I’m sorry! I overheard you guys a couple weeks ago in the copying room and you confessed your feelings to her and I just come in wrecking it all! I’m so sorry!” You slipped from hi grasp, just in time for Bruce to pull up around the corner.

Holding your bags close to you you kept our head dipped as you ran to the passenger side and got into the car.

Clark watched like a fool, letting you slip again. He confessed but he didn’t think to clarify with (Y/n) about Louis.

Now she knows so what will happen?

He put his head down, the rain now slowing down to a mild sprinkle. He stood in the empty street, jaw clenched.
A smile crept to his lips as he also remembered that you too confessed to him.

“I might have a chance with her.” He said to himself.

Should I Stay or Should I Go?

Bruce Wayne x Reader

Summary: You haven’t seen Bruce for weeks now. He’s been so busy being Batman that he’s seemingly forgotten about you. You’ve accepted a job offer in another city and haven’t been able to tell him. Will he convince you to stay? Reader uses she/her pronouns.

Warnings: Angst with fluffy ending because I need happiness.

Word Count: 4038

A/N: I finally got around to writing my Battinson x Reader fanfic! I have more ideas, but I’m in the middle of finals which is why this took so long to get to. Hopefully in a few weeks I’ll have more time to dedicate to writing but for now, I hope you enjoy this!

No matter how many times you walk up the steps to Wayne Manor, it’s still intimidating. You and Bruce had been best friends since you were kids. Your first encounter was not one you’re particularly proud of.

You were born into poverty and grew up knowing that money was hard to come by. Though you were young, you wanted to help your mom financially—that is, before she abandoned you—so you became a pickpocket. It was easy since your height made you hard to notice.

You had only done it a few times when you made a mistake. You noticed the Wayne family out and about one day. They weren’t surrounded by security, so you saw your chance. Even as a kid you knew about the famous Waynes. You looked at them and then noticed a nice-looking watch on young Bruce’s arm. Apparently, you had picked the wrong target.

As soon as you touched the watch, Bruce turned around and looked at you. You froze, your instincts telling you to run but you were too scared to move. Bruce looked confused. He then looked at his watch and then back to you, figuring out what it was you were after. Your face felt hot and just as you turned to leave you saw Bruce taking off the watch.

“I never liked it anyway,” he said to you. Your confusion only grew when he extended his arm with the watch in his open palm. You were too scared and confused to move. But Bruce just pushed his arm out further.

Slumber Parties — Harley Quinn/Reader One Shot

Words: 1k || Warnings: alcohol, mentions of cheating, breakups, language

a/n: wanted to mix things up a bit while I’m waiting for AGITP inspiration to come back to me. This can definitely be read as platonic, if you prefer.

Her hand clapped you hard on the back, causing you to grunt into your shot glass of brightly-colored liquor. Although it initially was not a gentle gesture, she moved her hand up from the middle of your back to squeeze your shoulder and rub in a semi-soothing circle near the hem of your shirt. “You can do better than her anyways,” said your companion, head lolling to the side through her partially drunken state.

Harley Quinn was a lot of things. She was loud and spontaneous, and smarter than people gave her credit for, but she was not, by any means, a woman who half-assed things. After getting out of a long relationship with a girl who, despite your chemistry and her stellar good looks, didn’t deserve the title of “girlfriend” in the long run, you’d been taking the hit pretty hard.

You hated to admit the way your heart clenched every time you remembered the sight of her on top of some tattoo’d up, motorcycle lover of a man on the couch you two had bought together, but it hadn’t been the first time she’d broken your heart in such a manner.

Turns out, Harley had been a solid shoulder to cry on, having recently gotten out of her terrible relationship with the clown she’d spent so many years chasing after. As far as you could tell, she’d really taken it in stride, so it was no surprise she was the first one in your friend group you turned to to ask for a place to stay for a few weeks until you were back on your feet.

She’d mostly ignored you the first few times she heard you crying from her tiny guest bedroom, but the third time was enough to push her over the edge. That’s when she barged in and suggested the two of you go out and get absolutely hammered at the local bar. That’s exactlywhat you did.

Three drinks in, and you were crying into your elbow while your flashy friend went on and on about how your ex didn’t know who she’s messing with, and how you deserve more than someone who’s going to waste your time like that, so on and so forth.

By now you’d lost count of the number of drinks you’d accepted from the bartender, and by now you were no longer shedding tears of sorrow, and instead tears of laughter as Harley tried (and failed) to bribe the bartender for another round in exchange for a manicure. He looked thoroughlyunamused, and you apologetically fished out a few dollar bills to finish off the night at the bar with one more round for the two of you.

“I’m tellin’ ya, babe,” Harley slurred, scooping her shot glass off the table and clinking it against yours, “Bein’ single may just be the best thing that’s ever happened to ya! Ya getta chance to discover the real you, and ain’t that really the only thing that matters? Plus, come here on a good night,” she leaned dangerously far back on her barstool so she could gesture vaguely around at the other nearby patrons, “And you get a tonna free drinks. Everyone’s bein’ awful cheap here tonight.”

With a wink in your direction, she downed her shot. As you followed her lead, you heard her exhale loudly and stretch her arms above her head.  “Well, that’s about all I got on me for tonight. Whaddya say we call it a night early and head back to my place? We can make popcorn and watch some cheesy movie to cheer ya up!”

“Yeah, Har, sounds great,” you replied, easing yourself off the stool and trying to steady yourself so you didn’t crash to the floor and cause a scene.

Harley looped an arm around your waist to keep you upright, snickering softly. “You’re gonna have one hell of a hangover tomorrow, toots… bucha know what? So’m I, so I guess we’ll do that togetha too.”

By some miracle, you both made it back to her apartment with little to no trouble, besides an occasional stumble and getting lost once when Harley drunkenly pulled you down the wrong street. Once you were both in the door, Harley all but collapsed on the couch in the middle of the room, groaning and shoving her face into one of the cushions. You followed suit quickly after, tipping your head back to catch your breath.

After a moment, you heard her familiar drawl from beside you. “I know I promised ya popcorn,” Harley said, “But I don’t think my legs are cooperatin’ anymore tonight.”

You laughed and ran a hand through your hair, moving it out of your face. “Mine either. Don’t worry.”

You heard a faint shuffling from beside you, and before you could respond, Harley was laying her head across your lap, blinking up at you with blue eyes and a drunken smile. “I mean it tomorrow though. S’ gonna be the best fuckin’ popcorn you eva had, too. And whateva movie ya want. What’s your favorite? Y’like movies, right?”

“Yeah, I like movies, Har,” you chuckled, affectionately patting her on the head.

“Me too,” she slurred, turning her face against your stomach, “I like ‘em too. We’ll watch some damn good movies,” with that, she lifted her arm and lifted her pinkie, “I swear it. Pinkie swear.”

You blinked and tried to move your arm to capture her pinkie with yours to seal the deal. You missed a few times, but as soon as you locked fingers, you could already hear her snoring.

Yeah.

Breakups are hard. Breakups suck. But not just anyone can boast they got to spend the night getting over their ex with Harleen Quinzel. Not everyone can boast they got to share a couch with her, either. Or that she promised them a day of movies and popcorn together, enjoying each other’s company.

That was something that distinctly belonged to you

And goddammit, you felt a piece of your heart soften in favor of Harley Quinn that night.

THIS IS HOME - B.W

Warnings: Mentions of pregnancy, children feature predominantly, divorce mentions

Summary: Years after Bruce Wayne had gone into hiding, his whole world was turned upside down and he comes to see you. That’s when he finds out there’s more to you then he remembers.

Wordcount: 2.1k

A/N: Yes, this was aimed as being the Christian Bale Batman but honestly, it could really fit for any of them. This just follows certain plot lines from the Dark Knight Rises

You watched the TV, staring at the screen in front of you. It was a scene of Batman, soaring through the streets on the motorbike that was oh so familiar.

The man underneath was familiar too. You hadn’t seen him in five years since you had broken up and he had dropped your partnership for renewable energy.

You had known him and Rachel for years, and after her death he felt so guilty for letting his best friend die he became a recluse. But you were okay with it, as long as the two of you were together. And for three years you would stand by each other no matter what.

“Mama,” a small child called out, the little black haired boy running into the room with a smile on his face.

He didn’t know he was the heir to the Wayne company at the mere age of 4 but he was content with this house and this life. You had tried to tell Bruce for months before giving up.

“Alfred, please let me in,” you had begged, holding the raincoat against your body, “I need to talk to him,”

“He’s not taking any visitors right now Miss, I’m sorry,” he said, a sad look on his face.

He never wanted to turn you away, the girl of Bruce’s dreams, but the master of the house had been determined to not let anyone into the house, not even you.

Especially not you.

“I’m pregnant,” you admitted, tears in your eyes as you looked at the Butler who you had always been fond of, “I have a letter for him, can you at least give it to him,”

“I can do Miss, and I hope it works out between you and Master Bruce,” he said before taking the letter and stepping into the house.

Bruce had watched as you got into the car, driving away from Wayne Manor for the last time when Alfred walked up, handing the lonely man the letter.

“She isn’t safe with me, I can’t let her stay,” he stated, not even opening the letter because if he read your words, he knew he’d run right back to you.

“Master, I think it would be wise for you to read the letter. She has some life changing news for you,” he pleaded but it fell to deft ears.

Bruce picked up the letter with his name inscribed and threw it directly into the fire, turning his back to it as he stared down the dirt path he had just witness you drive down, “I don’t need to know,”

Now years later and you were living with Alfred in your apartment that had been secretly paid for by the Wayne foundation all these years. Alfred had made sure his godson grew up in the best life style that he could and that you two would never have to worry about anything.

So after he had quit his job at Wayne Manor, you of course gave him a place to stay and Tommy was glad he was here as well.

You threw the daily newspaper on the floor, the headline reading that Bruce Wayne has gambled away all of his money to the stock market just before they had crashed and now he was without any power and was essentially broke.

You sighed, head in your hands. You worked as a scientist sure, but it wasn’t enough to afford this apartment and this carefree lifestyle you had been so comfortable in. There was probably enough money for the next few months, but after that you may have to find a new place.

You watched Alfred playing lego with Tommy in the other room, the little boy giggling away to himself as he played with the legs car, speeding along the road. You sighed, shaking your head.

It was clear he had too much of his fathers daring and risky attitude in him already.

Whenever you looked at your son, you saw the man you were once in love with. They had those same compassionate eyes and a mop of untameable black hair on their head. You couldn’t help but worry for him though when - or if - he found out who his father was. Would he be disappointed? Happy? Upset? For now, you thought, that wouldn’t be a problem.

Until you heard a knock on the door. You quickly walked to the hallway, with all the crime going around recently and the attack on Gordon, yeah, you were a bit scared. You peeked through the keyhole and scoffed when you saw Bruce in front of it, waiting nervously.

You opened it, raising your eyebrows as you looked at him. Sure, you had seen a few pictures of the hermit that he had become over the years, but he was still the most beautiful man you’d ever laid eyes on.

His breath hitched as well when he saw you, dressed in casual clothes but still as beautiful as when he would dress you up and take her to galas and be in her arms all night.

“What the hell do you want Wayne?” You asked, already knowing it wasn’t for you or your son.

“I’ve come for Alfred,” he said, the two if you not breaking eye contact, “I’ve come for help,”

“He doesn’t want to go back, it seems you manage to push away everyone you’ve ever held dear,” you said, turning your nose up at him.

The little boy ran into the doorway, stopping as he saw the tall man that towered over him. He smiled, “I’m Tommy,” he said as he saw the man, instantly not feeling threatened by him.

Alfred rushed out, breathing heavily, “I’m sorry Ma'am, I couldn’t stop him,” he said and you nodded, an awkward blush on your face.

“Go on Thomas sweetie, you go play with Alfred and don’t cause any trouble,” you said with a smile.

When you looked back up, Bruce had tears in his eyes. You’d never seen him so vulnerable, almost like he was imagining a world where he hadn’t left you. Because he knew. He knew as soon as he saw the little boy with black hair and inquisitive eyes who had inherited the name of his father.

“How old is he?” He croaked out, looking down at you with tears welling up in his eyes.

“Four,”

“Is he mine?” He asked, almost begging to know the answer, “He looks just like me,"

You didn’t answer for a second, meticulously deciding on how to explain to him the last four years whilst also letting him know he no longer had any say in your life or yours son.

"That’s none of your business anymore, you didn’t even read the letter did you? Listen to any of the voicemails I left?” You asked, folding your arms across her chest.

“Can I come in?” He asked and you opened your arms, inviting him in, the man stepping into the apartment. He knew Alfred had been sending money to a strange place each month and now he knew that it was all for you.

The apartment felt like a home. Pictures of you and your son littered the back wall, a few pictures of Alfred were also with the two of you. Then he saw one that had been slammed down on the table on the side, almost like it had been collecting dust for years.

“I’m sorry,” He began to rock on the balls of his feet slightly, “I didn’t want to drag you down with me,”

You scoffed, “Well you’re currently still a wanted criminal as Batman and you are completely broke so yeah, maybe I’m glad me and my son aren’t involved,”

He reached for your hands but you pulled away, “I never stopped loving you, I pushed you away because I couldn’t bear the thought of you knowing I was Batman and then being arrested,” he explained, a singular tear rolling down his cheek.

“I had just given birth to Thomas when you sent me those divorce papers,” you explained, now it was your turn to begin to get upset, “He’s your son, it says on his birth certificate. But the minute I signed those papers, I knew you weren’t coming back for us,”

“That’s where Alfred’s been going on his vacations, to see the two of you,"

You nodded, "He’s always known, he’s paid for this apartment all these years, he’s my son’s godfather,”

“Our son,”

You pointed your finger at him, an angry look on your face as you stepped closer to him, blood boiling at the prospect of him claiming any power over the boy you’d raised, “My son. You haven’t been there for him and if you hadn’t cared so much that your butler quit then you never would have,” you spat out, tears rolling down your cheeks as you hit him on the chest, “You weren’t there for me,"

He pulled you against his chest as you sobbed and you hated the comfort that you found as soon as he wrapped his arms around you. He pressed a kiss to the top of your head and he realised just how much he missed this.

"I’m sorry, I should’ve been here. If I’d have read the letter, I’d be sitting here with you and our son and everything wouldn’t have gone to hell,” he whispered, your name on his lips like a prayer, “I love you,”

“I’ve always loved you,” you whispered back, pulling away to look up into his eyes, “But how can I trust you?”

“I’m going to fix this, then you can come back to the Manor, all three of us, as a family,” he promised, taking your hands in his, “And Alfred,”

You laughed, a smile on your face.

He wiped away the tears, “There’s that laugh,” he said so quietly he wasn’t sure you’d even hear.

“Alfred,” you called out and the man stepped out of the room, the little boy standing behind him to try and get a look at the scene, “I think Bruce needs to talk to you, but first-” you crouched down, “-Tommy come here,”

The little boy rushed into his mother’s arms, looking up at the man with wide blue eyes. He seemed curious and Bruce knew this was his son, he was perfect.

“This is your dad, you wanna go say hi?” You said and he nodded, running up to the man and wrapping an arm around his leg.

Bruce chuckled, prying the boy off slightly before kneeling down and wrapping him in the largest hug he’d ever given in his life. Tommy giggled, smiling up at his father as if he’d always been in his life.

“I love you son,"

"Love you too daddy,” he said and Bruce teared up, watching as you came and pulled the two boys into a hug.

“Once he’s done what he needs to do, he’s going to come back for us, for you. And we’re going to live in a nice big house with Alfred all the time,” you promised and the boy stood up.

“Come look at my legos,” he said, grabbing the larger hand of his father.

He chuckled, the widest grin that Alfred had seen in a while on Bruce’s face, “Of course, then I’ve got some business to attend to, is that okay kiddo?”

“Yeah,”

He looked back at you, a smile on his face as he looked at you with tears in her eyes. This was it. This was what he’d always wanted.

“You know he never submitted those divorce papers,” Alfred said as he stood next to you, the two of you watching as Tommy gave Bruce a guided tour of his room and all the little things he had, “He could never bring himself to lose you forever,”

You smiled to yourself, “Well he’s got to do better, I’m not going to forgive everything in an instant, but I’m willing to make it work,”

And for the first time in years, neither you nor Bruce needed to be scared, you had each other.

The metal door slams into the wall, sending an echo bouncing around the space as you stumble into the stairwell. Your breathing is ragged. You press your hand against your chest and wince at the pain. When you pull your hand back, you see red coating your skin. You can feel more blood bleeding through your suit. But you try not to focus on that.

As you grip the railing and slowly descend the stairs, you can’t help but think back to how your evening started.

You had been bored so you decided to leaf through some files for the case you and your partner had been working on. The two of you were working on taking down a major mafia gang that recently emerged in Gotham. Anyway, while looking through the files you saw a strange address.

It was an address for a pharmaceutical company which made you wonder how it was related to the gang. Upon further research, you discovered the company didn’t exist until a few months ago – similar timing to when the gang started to gain traction. You decided to visit the address in the file just in case you saw anything.

You dressed in your vigilante uniform which consisted of a skin-tight dark purple suit, a matching mask for your eyes, a utility belt with double holsters for your guns and black boots. You didn’t want to be caught off-guard in your civilian clothing. A dagger also sat tucked away in your right boot in case you ran out of bullets.

The address led you to a building on the outskirts of the city. Parking your motorcycle in an alleyway, you climbed the building opposite the one you were staking out. For the first hour you didn’t see anything and when you were about to pack it up, two black vans pulled up in front of the building.

Grabbing your binoculars, you watched as a group of men piled out of the vans. Your jaw had dropped when you realized that some of them were the leaders of the organization. By some incredible coincidence, you had stumbled upon a covert meeting arranged by the gang. You immediately pulled out your phone to call your partner, but they didn’t pick up. You tried a few more times before giving up.

You saw the men entering the building and decided that this could be your one shot at stopping these guys once and for all. Cursing, you watched as the men entered an elevator and got off on the top floor before you descended from your spot. Your first mistake of the night.

The elevator was guarded by two men which you easily took down with your guns. On the ride up, you counted your ammunition and prepared yourself. When the doors began to slide open, you hid in the corner of the elevator and waited for the guardsmen to come to you before striking.

Bullets flew around the room and one managed to graze your arm, but overall, the fight was over before the others had a chance. You locked eyes on a closed conference room and noticed movement in the room. Taking a quick breath, you broke down the doors and faced off with the leaders of the mafia.

They had time to prepare for you but they didn’t accommodate your speed as you dashed around the room, narrowly missing bullets aimed at you. You were doing well, either shooting your targets or taking them on in hand to hand combat and no one had managed to land a hit on you. You tossed aside your guns when you ran out of ammo and eventually found yourself facing off with the last man.

You unveiled your dagger and sliced his neck, his blood spewing on your suit, but you got distracted. You thought you had taken them all out and only realized your mistake when the gunshot rang out. You were quick to react but not quick enough as a bullet lodged itself in your chest. A gasp slipped past your mouth at the pain. You turned to see one of the men on the floor with a gun pointed at you and you tossed your dagger at him, officially taking him out. But the damage was done.

Your wound wouldn’t excuse any sloppy work, and so you tied the men up before leaving. You never wanted to kill your victims unless you had to and you figured they’re worth more alive than dead anyway. You decided you would call the police once you left the scene, knowing that the criminals weren’t going anywhere. The blood loss was beginning to take root as your head felt dizzy. In your weakened state, you foolishly thought that taking the stairs would be faster than the elevator. Boy were you wrong.

And that’s how you find yourself trying to walk down six flights of stairs while severely injured. You manage to reach the fourth floor but when you walk down the stairs to continue, you almost fall. Instead, you stop on the landing in between staircases, deciding to catch a break.

Panting, you lean against the white brick wall and slide down until you’re sitting. You try not to let fear or panic take hold of you. Instead, you take out your phone, though the touch screen is difficult to use with your bloodied fingers, and dial the one person who wanted to hear from.

You pray that your partner picks up the phone. You know they’re on patrol, but still you hold out hope that the ringing will stop. And then it does and your breath catches.

Hello?” His voice is as deep as always. You suspect that it’s exaggerated to protect his identity, though you’ve never gotten him to admit it. Hearing his voice instantly calms your rising panic. In the background, you can hear the loud noise of an engine which you suspect is coming from the Batmobile. You had adopted that name for the vehicle, despite Batman’s protests. Though you think he secretly likes it.

“Hey Batboy,” you reply, managing a smile through your pain, even though he can’t see you. You imagine him behind the wheel, his gloved hands holding it tight. You imagine his bright eyes focused on the road before him, his serious demeanor on display.

I’m sorry I missed your calls earlier, I hope it wasn’t important,” he says and it takes you a moment to remember what he’s talking about. When you do, you almost laugh. Not too important, just led to me bleeding out on some dirty floor. Though you don’t hold him responsible. You don’t have the energy for grudges. And after all, it was your choice to act.

“It’s okay, I handled it,” you say.

I’m on patrol, what do you need?” Straight to the point as always. Though his directness can come across as rude, you never let it get to you. You know he means well and that he just isn’t a naturally positive person. Luckily, you are.

“Can’t I say hello to my partner?” You don’t want to talk to him about your situation because you’ve already come to terms with it. You wouldn’t make it. Even if you told him now, he’d still be too late. You remain calm even though your heart is begging you not to give up. You don’t want to die. But your fate is already sealed. Before you go, you just want to hear from your partner.

I don’t have time for this. Call me back if it’s important,” he says and you almost cry out in a state of panic.

“Wait!” you say, letting too much desperation slip past your lips. You try to recompose yourself. “Please, it is important.” You wait with bated breath as you hear him sigh.

What is it?” A sigh of relief escapes your lips, though you tense up again as your wound sends a wave of pain throughout your body. You bite your lip to keep from crying out as you put more pressure on the gunshot wound.

“I have new information on the mafia gang.” You try to focus on your conversation but your mind feels fuzzy and you find yourself staring at the brick wall in front of you. That plain, cold looking wall will be the last thing you see before you die. The thought causes your eyes to blur with oncoming tears. You had forgotten about the call before Batman spoke up.

Y/N? Are you still there?” he asks, a slight concern in his voice. You smile and ignore your tears as one slips down your cheeks.

“Yeah sorry,” you clear your throat and enter your professional state. “I was going through some of our files when I found an address for a pharmaceutical company that I linked to the gang. The building is located on the outskirts of town, so I decided to stake it out.”

What did you find?

“Nothing at first, it looked like a normal building. But then two vans pulled up containing the leaders of the gang. I think it was a covert meeting spot.”

Wait, what did you do?” His voice sounds suspicious and worried as if he’s figuring out exactly what you did.

“About that…” you nervously chuckle, waiting for his accompanying anger.

You didn’t.” His voice is hard and you imagine a fire in his eyes. Eyes that you find yourself staring into all too often and yet it’s never enough.

“It was a once in a lifetime opportunity, I had to!” you argue, wincing again as you move and are reminded of your pain.

You should have called me first!” Again, you want to laugh at his cluelessness. Some detective.

“I did,” you say. You’re met with silence as he takes in the news.

Shit,” he mutters. “Your phone calls.” You can picture his shoulders slumping with guilt. “You still should have waited for me.

“I didn’t want to risk losing them,” you admit. There’s another moment of silence as he prepares to ask his next question.

What happened?” You then explain to him how you fought your way through the gang, leaving out the part where you wound up with a bullet lodged in your chest.

Wow, I’m impressed.” You feel a little silly for the pride that suddenly swells in you at the sound of that, along with your blush. “So the gang’s taken care of.

“Yeah, they’re now officially the GCPD’s problem.”

Thanks for letting me know,” he says. He’s always so professional, so uptight. You often try to loosen him up and have even managed to make him laugh a few times, which remains some of your proudest moments, but it never lasts. You wonder if you were around him more, in a not-so-professional manner, if you could add more positivity in his life. Too late for that now. If that’s everything, I should get back to work.

Your breathing picks up at the idea of him leaving you. You try desperately to think of a way to keep him on the line. Unfortunately, only one idea comes to mind.

“Please wait!” you cry out, sounding even more desperate than the last time. It’s getting too tiring to contain your emotions. You prepare yourself to tell him and then – “I lied to you.”

What?

You take a deep breath and smile sadly. “I…they got me,” you say. “They got me good, Batman.” In moments like these, you wish you knew his real identity. You wish you knew his real name. Calling him ‘Batman’ feels impersonal. But I guess you weren’t meant to know him personally, and you respect his right to privacy despite him knowing your identity.

Another moment of silence passes as Batman struggles to say something. “Are you okay? Where are you?” His voice sounds more concerned. You imagine his mouth turned down slightly. You wonder if his eyebrows are creased under his mask.

“No, I’m not okay,” you say, ignoring his second question. This isn’t how you wanted this conversation to go, but at least he’s still on the line. At least you’re not alone.

Okay hold on, just tell me where you are and I can help you.” He sounds so determined you almost don’t want to tell him the truth.

“You can’t help me,” your voice cracks, but a smile still remains on your face. Somehow, you feel sad while maintaining a positive attitude. You figure these last moments should be enjoyable. At least you want them to be. Kind of a hard thing to ask for, but you don’t care.

Yes I can, just—

“It’s too late, Batman.” Your cheeks become wet as tears slip down them. They slide all the way down your neck where you’re finding it harder and harder to breathe.

Y/N, tell me where you are.” It’s not his angered voice that convinces you, but the fact that you know he won’t let it go. Even if it’s pointless. Even if there’s not a chance in the world.

“I’m still in the building.” You give him the address and tell him where you’re located in the stairwell. You hear the screeching of tires and imagine Batman turning his car around. It pains you to know that despite all of his efforts, he can’t save you. And you’re not sure he’ll be able to come to terms with it.

I’m on my way, just hold on for me, okay?” His voice is louder, trying to speak over the roaring engine. You hope there aren’t many drivers out tonight because you can’t imagine seeing that black car zooming down the street. Another wave of pain explodes from your wound and you let out a cry, too weak to try to hold it in. “Y/N?

“It’s fine,” you say, trying to soothe the worry you hear. But your lie isn’t fooling either one of you.

You hear a growl sound from the phone. “Goddammit Y/N, why didn’t you tell me sooner? I could have gotten to you quicker.

“It wouldn’t have mattered,” you say,

Stop talking like that, you’re going to be fine.” His insistence makes you wish he was right. You can barely keep your eyes open, trying to focus on a crack in the opposite wall to ground yourself. But it’s hard.

“It’s okay, Batman. I wasn’t even going to tell you at all because I knew this would happen. I’ve accepted it.” Even as the words leave your lips, there’s still a small part of you screaming to keep fighting. The pain is slowly drowning it out.

You can’t just give up, I told you I’m on my way,” he says. “And why did you call me then? To tell me about the gang?

“I…I didn’t want to be alone,” you admit and you feel a small weight lift off of your shoulders at telling the truth. You decide to keep going. “And I wanted…I wanted to hear your voice, one last time.”

Batman doesn’t say anything for a moment and you’re almost afraid you’ve scared him off, when his voice crackles to life, “Y/N—

“I only wish I could have seen you too.”

You will,” he insists. “You will when I come to help you. I’m almost there, just another minute—

“Batman I need to tell you something.” The urge grips you hard to tell him everything you’ve always wanted to say. You can feel blood leak into your lungs and you know it’s only a matter of time before you can’t speak at all.

No, you can wait to tell me in person.”

“I can’t.” You can feel blood start to bubble up into your throat. The pain is fading away, which only means that your brain is starting to shut down. “Batman—”

Y/N don’t do this—

“I love you.” The words echo in your mind and you smile knowing that you’ve said it. At least he’ll know. Even if you can’t be with him, even if he doesn’t love you back, at least he’ll know.

Y/N.” Batman seems to be at a loss for words. You can’t tell if that means he wants to reject your feelings or if he’s just surprised, but it doesn’t matter. You start to cough up blood and your arm feels heavy as if you were holding up a brick instead of a phone. You stare at the blank wall and try to imagine that Batman is in front of you. You want that to be your last sight.

“Goodbye,” you manage to get out just before your thoughts dissolve into air and your eyes finally close.

No wait Y/N—” Batman’s yelling falls on deaf eyes as your arm drops to the floor, your phone still in your hand but your grip has gone slack. Batman’s voice echoes in your mind as you finally allow the darkness to consume you.

†††

“Y/N? Y/N!” Bruce yells but gets no response. “Fuck!” He presses down even harder on the accelerator, so much so that it might be touching the floor. That doesn’t matter. There’s only one thing that matters.

Bruce refuses to hang up the call in case he hears something, anything on the other end. As Bruce zips down the streets of Gotham, he can’t help but feel angry. Angry at you for giving up and for not believing he could save you. Angry at himself for not answering your calls earlier and for letting you get hurt. Angry at the world for trying to take away one more fucking person that Bruce loves.

The moment you said those three words, Bruce almost stopped breathing. It wasn’t fair, he thought. He finally finds out that the person he loves loves him back and you’re on your deathbed. Maybe if he had let go of his fears and told you earlier, the two of you would have been happy together.

Stop, he scolds himself. There’s still hope for that. They’re not dead.

Bruce hopes that he’s right. He’s about to find out as he pulls in front of the building you’re in. So close, Bruce had been so close. He told you he was coming. Why didn’t you wait for him?

He doesn’t even turn off the engine of the Batmobile (your nickname for his car) as he opens his door and dashes towards the building. Time seems to speed up and slow down all at once as Bruce runs towards the entrance to the stairwell and keeps on running.

He runs as fast as he can until he reaches the platform you said you were at and he has to take a step back at the sight before him. Slumped against the opposite wall is you with blood covering your face and suit.

Time stops as he takes everything in. Your closed eyes. The blood leaking from your mouth. Your right hand lying against the pool of blood on your chest. But the sight that breaks his heart the most is your phone that you’re still holding in your left hand, still on a call with him.

Bruce feels like the wind has been kicked out of him, finding it hard to breathe. But he snaps out of his despairing trance and quickly rushes over to you. He holds one hand against your cheek. “Y/N?” he asks but you don’t respond. His heart rages against his rib cage as he rips his glove off of his other hand and reaches out towards your neck to check your pulse.

For one horrible moment, he doesn’t feel anything. He’s about to break down, letting out all of the emotions that have been rising inside of him since you told him about your condition. But then, he feels it. A faint flutter of a pulse against his fingers. He feels like he can breathe again. He can actually do something. He can save you.

Bruce briefly examines the wound only to see blood still leaking from what he assumes is a gunshot. He wants to apply pressure to it but he curses when he doesn’t find anything to wrap it in. He’s going to have to move fast.

Carefully, he scoops you up into his arms and his jaw clenches when he sees your head roll lifeless onto his chest. You’re the one who’s usually so full of life. He found it rather annoying at first, but he soon realized that you were actually brightening his life. It’s not fair.

He moves towards the stairs and hears your phone hit the ground behind him but he doesn’t have time. Bruce races down the stairs while holding you tight against him, forbidding any more harm to come to you. He exits the building and manages to set you down in the passenger seat.

As soon as he’s behind the wheel, he takes off towards Wayne Manor. He would take you to the hospital, but the Manor is closer and he can’t have anything more go wrong. He doesn’t trust that the doctors can save you, but he knows that he can. He has to.

Normally when he has you in the car, it’s almost never quiet. You’re either singing (even when he turns off the radio) or just talking about anything at all. He has never hated the quiet so much. He glances at his screen and sees that the call still hasn’t ended. Your words begin to flood his mind.

Hey Batboy.

I lied to you.

They got me.

It’s too late.

I wanted to hear your voice one last time.

I love you.

Goodbye.

Bruce’s vision begins to blur but he blinks back any emotion knowing there’s time to hurt later but right now he needs to focus on saving you.

A thought occurs to him to call the GCPD about the gang. Normally he wouldn’t care, but he doesn’t want your suffering to be in vain. But to do that he’ll have to hang up on you and he doesn’t like that implication. Glancing at you, he makes a promise.

“You’re going to hear my voice and see me again,” he promises. “And it won’t be for the last time.” Then he hangs up the phone.

“You did not beat up Superman,” Harcourt says with a tired expression on her face.

“Yes I did! You just didn’t hear about it ‘cause he was too embarrassed,” Peacemaker says, defensively. He takes another drink from his fourth beer of the night. “The guy’s not even that tough.”

You watch the interaction and laugh before taking a drink yourself. You had just finished a long day’s work when the team received a message from Amanda Waller. She demanded that you send her a detailed report of the last mission and a summary of what intel you had gathered on the butterflies by the morning. It was too much work for one person to do so the whole team stayed to work (although Chris had to be convinced to stay).

You had gone about one hour of doing the work before both Adrian and Chris started complaining that they were bored. When the rest of you refused to acknowledge them, Chris came up with the brilliant suggestion to ditch the work and get drunk instead. Adrian obviously backed this idea. You, Harcourt, John, and Adebayo all complained that you were too tired to go to a bar, which is when Chris brought out a secret cooler he had stashed in a supply closet.

It took some convincing, and you all had to beg Harcourt to join, but eventually everyone agreed. Fuck Waller, you deserved a break.

Which is how you find yourself currently sitting atop your desk with your third (or was it your fourth?) beer in your hands. You, Chris, John, and Adebayo were all drunk while Harcourt was only a little tipsy. Adrian remained sober as he claimed he would be patrolling later on that night.

“Drunk patrolling is way more dangerous than drunk driving,” Adrian had said to you earlier. You had felt the urge to argue, but then realized who you were talking to and decided against it.

As your mind begins to wander, so do your eyes as you look at Adrian sitting in a chair not too far from your desk. His cute glasses sit perched on his nose and you smile as you watch him laugh, his face beaming. He looks so beautiful. You want to tell him that but you can never get the words out. You almost find the courage to do so now when—

“Let’s play a game!” Leota says rather loudly, shaking you from your thoughts.

“How about truth or dare?” Adrian suggests with a smile. He’s always smiling. He has a beautiful smile.

“What are you, 12?” John shoots back, causing Adrian’s smile to falter. You frown and glare at John before someone else speaks up.

“Never have I ever?” Chris says.

“Boring,” Abebayo says. Then her face lights up. “What about fuck, marry, kill?”

“Aren’t you already married?” Harcourt questions.

“Yeah but this is just pretend,” Adebayo says, gesturing around with her beer bottle. All of you then agree to play.

“I’ll go first!” Chris yells.

“Um actually I wanted to—” Adebayo tries to argue but Chris interrupts her.

“Economos! Fuck, marry, kill…Harcourt, Adebayo, and Y/N,” he says with a cheeky smile. You’re surprised to hear your name and turn to see John’s face pale.

“Uh, aren’t we supposed to go in a circle?” John says nervously, trying not to meet any of the girls’ faces.

“There are no rules, just pick,” Chris says, leaning back in his chair. All three of you stare at John awaiting his response. He stutters, looking between all of you. “Come on man, it’s not like you got a shot with any of them anyway.”

John glares at Chris but Chris just smiles. “Okay fine,” John says, his face heating up. “If I had to choose…I would, marry Adebayo, fuck Y/N, and kill Harcourt.” The words quickly rush out of his mouth but everyone still heard him.

“Thank you,” Adebayo says at the same time as Harcourt says, “What the fuck?!”

Your mouth drops open for a second before blushing. Your drunk mind finds this amusing and you chuckle.

“He made me choose!” John says.

“Why the fuck would you kill me?” Harcourt says with a heated glare. Maybe if she were in a more sober state, she wouldn’t have cared as much. But right now she’s pissed.

“Because you scare me! I wouldn’t be comfortable having sex with you or marrying you,” he argues. Harcourt considers this and seems content with his answer.

“I never knew you had the hots for me John,” you say giggling. You throw a wink his way which only bothers him more.

“I didn’t—I don’t—I thought this was just a game!” he throws his hands up in the air and everyone laughs. Except for one person.

“How about someone else goes?” Adrian says with a frustrated voice. You look over and see him looking tense with a frown on his face. You struggle to comprehend what upset him and when you’re about to ask, someone else speaks.

“Okay I’ll go,” John says, determination on his face. A smug smile creeps onto his face. “Harcourt, fuck, marry, kill…Peacemaker, Vigilante, and me.”

“Are you serious?” Harcourt demands while the rest of you giggle.

“Answer the question, Harcourt,” Chris says with a stupid grin on his face. Harcourt sighs deeply.

“Fine,” she says. “Fuck Peacemaker, marry Economos, and kill Vigilante.” The room once again erupts into giggles and playful taunting.

“I knew you wanted me,” Chris says, a satisfied look on his face. Harcourt immediately glares at him

“Shut up.” Though you’re secretly glad you didn’t have to imagine the idea of Harcourt fucking or marrying Vigilante, you’re also a bit confused as to why she would want to kill him. To you, he’s the best option. You clearly aren’t the only one dissatisfied with the answer because—

“What the fuck?!” Adrian yells from beside you. The group turns to face him. “You would seriously kill meoverEconomos?! Have you met the guy?”

“Hey!” John speaks up, not liking how this got turned around on him once again.

Harcourt shrugs, clearly not taking this game too seriously. “I think John would make a good housewife.”

Fuck you guys,” John says, causing the rest of you to chuckle at his red face. You try to throw him an empathetic smile, you never liked the gang teasing John too much, but you’re too drunk to pay much attention to it.

“And no offense Adrian, but I wouldn’t want to kiss you, let alone fuck or marry you,” she says. You look over to see a frown form on Adrian’s face which causes you to frown. You hate seeing him upset. Unfortunately, your intoxicated mind takes this thought and tries to fix things.

“I would,” you say. The room quiets down as all eyes turn to you in surprise.

“Seriously?” Both Harcourt and Chris say, at the same time as Adrian says, “What?”

You glance at his wide-eyed gaze before moving to address the group. “Yeah, I’d kiss him. I bet he’d be a great kisser!” you exclaim before hiccupping. “In fact,” you stand up, slightly swaying on your feet before balancing yourself. “I would also fuck and marry him. Who wouldn’t? He’s—he’s sexy, he’s cute, he’s fucking funny, and he has an awesome personality. Oh, and he’s hot.”

If you were sober, you would want the earth to simply consume you for saying that, not only in front of Adrian but in front of everyone. But you aren’t sober, so you don’t think anything of saying that. The truth slipped out so easily you barely processed saying anything.

The room is still silent as everyone soaks in your speech. Adrian’s face is beat red as he struggles to process what just happened. Then suddenly Adebayo begins to sing, “Y/N and Adrian sitting in a tree. K-I-S-S-I-N-G.”

Everyone laughs, including yourself, and the game continues on as normal. Or so you thought. What you don’t see, is that Adrian continues to stare at you in wonder and disbelief until someone snaps him out of his thoughts.

The night continues on and the game gets less personal and more fun, bringing in celebrities, random characters and even Amanda Waller which almost made Adebayo leave the room in disgust.

Eventually, the alcohol begins to weigh on you and everyone decides to head home. Adrian offers to drive most of you home as the only sober person. You happily sit in the passenger’s seat and sing along to whatever random song Adrian has on his playlist. He drops everyone off one by one until it’s just you and him. Your energy is slowly leaving you so the ride is mostly filled with the sound of Adrian’s voice, but you don’t mind seeing that it’s Adrian.

When you arrive at your place, Adrian helps you out of the car and then up to your door once you stumble and almost fall. Even having his arm around you makes your heart race. It takes you a while to find your keys and you’re almost disappointed when you do. You don’t want him to leave. But you also know that you’re not in the right state of mind to invite him in.

You place your key in the door and then hesitate. You turn around to see Adrian waiting there, making sure you get in safe. The thought makes you smile. “Thank you, for…for making sure I get home alright,” you say, wanting to talk to him one last time. As if you wouldn’t see him tomorrow.

“O-oh that? Psh, that was nothing,” he says, caught off guard by your sincerity. “All in a day’s work for a hero.” His wink causes you to laugh.

“My hero,” you say with a laugh.

“Don’t I get some sort of kiss as a thank you?” he asks, cheekily. “After all, you were practically begging for me back there.” Both of you know he’s teasing but there’s something truthful hidden in your conversation. And maybe this is only happening because you probably won’t remember this, but you decide to take advantage of it.

“You’re right,” you say. Adrian’s smile turns into a slightly opened mouth. You’re tempted to kiss him right then and there. You lean in and his breath hitches. You press your lips against his cheek, planting a small kiss there. When you pull away, both of your faces are red. But you act as if it doesn’t faze you.

“Goodnight,” you say with a smile, turning towards your door.

“G-goodnight!” Adrian manages to get out as you’re entering your place. You close the door and take a moment to calm your beating heart. Then your thoughts turn towards your bed and how tired you are and your night ends there.

†††

You wake up the next morning with a pounding headache and a groan on your lips. You roll over in your sheets only to face your alarm clock, telling you you only have half an hour before work. Work. The thought of it makes your head ache even more but you know you have to go.

As you’re getting ready, memories of last night begin to click back into place and you freeze as you remember what you said. Oh. My. God. You start to shake your head, trying to erase the memory as if it never happened. But it did.

“Shit,” you say, taking a moment to sit on your bed. You can’t believe you practically admitted your feelings to Adrian in front of everyone. In front of him. God he is going to think you are such a freak

You focus on your breathing as your thoughts begin to spiral. Calm down, Y/N. Maybe he doesn’t remember? Oh who are you kidding, he was sober of course he’s going to remember. You fall back onto your bed as you absolutely dread showing your face at work. But after a few minutes of wallowing, you realize there’s nothing you can do but face the music. Taking a deep breath, you continue to get ready to leave.

Walking into work, you wear black sunglasses and hold a cup of coffee in your hands to help with your hangover. You thought you might be late and, though you are the last to arrive, everyone else doesn’t look like they’re doing much better than you. You guess there will be a minimal amount of work done today.

Ugh, my head is killing me,” Chris says as he leans back in his office chair.

“Obviously. You have a hangover,” Harcourt says, a little more fed up with him than usual. “What did you expect?”

“No way, you think a few little beers is enough to knock me off my feet?” Chris scoffs. Harcourt shakes her head. “My body is built to withstand gallons of alcohol, easily.”

“Yes, I’m sure you’re much more superior than the rest of us,” she says, her voice dripping in sarcasm.

“Maybe that’s why you want to fuck me so bad,” he says, smirking at her, extracting a loud groan from Harcourt. She opens her mouth to bite back a response when you hear—

“Oh my god, will you two please quiet down?” Adebayo says from her desk across the room. She’s also wearing a pair of sunglasses and is currently massaging her temples.

“Seriously,” John says from his desk beside her. He looks in rough shape, his face paler than usual. “It’s bad enough I had to come in today, I cannot listen to the two of you do your weird fight-flirting today.”

This elicits even more noise as Harcourt jumps to defend herself and Chris teases her. Between the two of them, stands the man you are afraid to see. Adrian. He’s currently laughing at the fighting, not getting as involved as usual. This is your chance.

You take a deep breath and prepare yourself for the conversation ahead. You take your sunglasses off and walk over to him. As you approach, you see him turn to you and smile. “Good morning,” he says in his usual upbeat voice. You’re not sure if he’s ignoring what happened last night or if he’s really chill about it. Either way, your nerves increase.

“Hey,” you reply, finding it hard to meet his eyes but smiling nonetheless. “Can I talk to you for a sec?” You gesture towards the hallway, obviously wanting to have this conversation in private. He agrees and you lead the way.

Once you’re far enough down the hall where the others won’t hear you, you stop to face him. Your words get caught in your throat and your courage disappears as you look at him. Come on Y/N, get it together. As you fidget with your fingers, Adrian takes this as an opportunity to start the conversation.

“So, what did you want to talk to me about?” His face still offers no indication that he knows which makes this a thousand times harder. Deep breaths.

“I wanted to…to apologize for what happened last night,” you say with your eyes trained on the floor.

“Isthatwhat this is about?” His question makes you look back up at him. You tilt your head in confusion. What else would this be about? He only smiles. “Don’t worry about that, no need to apologize.”

“Wait what?” This is not how you thought this was going to go. You’re genuinely unsure of what his next words would be. Was he going to reject you? Maybe admit to similar feelings? Or would he—

“Yeah. I mean, everyone says things they don’t mean when they’re drunk.” Your heart drops. He still doesn’t get it. He’s going to make you say it again, isn’t he?

“Adrian,” you sigh, trying to find the words again. But he keeps talking.

“I get it, I’ve totally been there,” he says. “Like this one time, I was drinking with Peacemaker, and I got so drunk that I told him he has a sexier butt than Taylor Swift! Which is crazybecause obviously Taylor has—”

“Adrian,” you say firmly to cut off his ramblings. You look into his big innocent eyes. Here goes nothing. “I meant every word I said.”

His jaw drops and he does nothing but blink at you. “W-what?”

“I…look that obviously wasn’t how I meant to tell you but yeah.” There’s a small silence where you decide to keep talking. “I understand if you don’t feel the same way or if this makes things awkward between us but—”

And then this motherfucker has the gall to laugh. Like actually laugh. You’re so caught off guard that you stop talking.

“Seriously?” he asks you with a big smile on his face. Your face begins to heat up and you look back at the ground.

“There’s no need to laugh at me—”

“What? No, no, no, that’s not—I’m not making fun of you,” he says quickly. You grow confused. He’s still smiling. “I just…I can’t believe that you actually like me.”

“Is that so hard to believe?” you say, still feeling like he’s laughing at you.

“Yes!” he says. “I mean look at you! You’re the most gorgeous, badass, coolest person I know.” Your heart begins to swell. “You’re completely out of my league! Even Peacemaker thought so when I told him how I felt…”

Slowly you understand what he’s trying to say and while he’s still talking, you walk up to him. He only shuts up when you’re standing right in front of him.

“Can I kiss you now?” you ask softly, glancing at his lips. He quickly nods and you pounce on him, bringing his mouth to yours. He lets out a small moan and you smile, pulling him closer to you. The kiss is deep and messy, both of you so excited to finally do this that you want everything at once. Eventually you come up for air and you wrap your hands around his neck. He looks dazed and a goofy smile is stuck on his lips.

“Wow…” is all he says and you feel proud that you’ve rendered him speechless for once.

“Yeah,” you agree.

“In case it wasn’t clear, I really like you,” he says seriously, and you giggle.

“Mmm I hadn’t noticed,” you joke before looking into his eyes. “I like you too.” The smile he gives you turns your insides to jelly. You glance behind him as you’re suddenly reminded of the rest of the group. Luckily, you don’t spot any peeping eyes but you’re not sure how long that will last. “We should get back to the others.”

The thought of it puts a small damper on your mood. You’re so happy to finally be with the man you’ve been crushing on for months and the moment’s over.

“We could do that,” he says nodding. “OR, we could stay here and continue to make out?”

You smile at his optimistic looking face. “Yeah that sounds better.” His lips crash back down to yours as he backs you into a wall and you can’t help but smile at the trouble this boy is about to bring into your life.

Summary: While out on a date, you feel a set of familiar eyes watching you. Reader uses she/her pronouns.

Warnings: Jealous Bruce.

Word Count: 3259

A/N: I’m wrapping up with finals which means back to writing and who better to start with than my favourite bat boy ;)

“‘Many have their own theories behind Bruce Wayne’s reclusive nature, with some suspecting that the billionaire is harbouring a dark secret,’” you read aloud. You’re flipping through a trashy magazine you picked up when you saw Bruce’s name on the cover. Your words echo throughout the Batcave as you lean back in an office chair you claimed as your own. You liked that it reclined.

Beside you, Bruce Wayne is seated in front of his multi-screened monitor, silently watching videos he recorded as Batman. In the beginning you would watch with him but eventually you realized it was all very similar and you got bored.

It was a complete accident that you found out his secret. You had been Bruce’s friend for years, always trying to bring a bit of fun and joy into the man’s otherwise gloomy life. You had been on your way to do just that, ready with a batch of cookies that he always says he doesn’t want but you know he secretly does. You knocked at the door and Dory let you in. You went wondering around the house and stumbled upon a hushed conversation between Bruce and Alfred in the office. Feeling nosy, you listened in:

“I don’t want to go,” you heard Bruce say. Alfred sighed.

“I understand that Master Bruce, but I think it would be in your best interest to go,” Alfred responded.

“Why? To negotiate business deals?” Bruce scoffed.

“That and I think it’s important you keep up with public appearances. People are starting to get suspicious,” Alfred said which made you confused as to what he was talking about. Then he said: “After all, you wouldn’t want anyone to find out that Bruce Wayne doubles as a bat-themed vigilante at night.”

“Alfred no one’s gonna—” Bruce stopped himself as a gasp escaped your mouth. He slowly opened the door to find you standing there with your mouth wide open. Bruce and Alfred had both looked panicked, but Bruce tried to act as if nothing had happened. “You shouldn’t eavesdrop on other people’s private conversations—”

“You’re Batman?!” you shouted. Bruce and Alfred both tried to explain themselves, but it was clear that the cat was out of the bag. Or rather, the bat.

At first you were a little mad at Bruce for not telling you, but you got over it. You understood the importance of the secret. After that you wouldn’t leave him alone about it. Eventually he brought you to the Batcave, which he would come to regret as you fell in love with the place and decided that it was your new hangout spot.

Which brings you to leaning back in your chair, trying to distract Bruce while he ignores you, which annoys you. You had hoped reading from this magazine would grab his attention. “‘Some theorists have claimed to have caught glimpses of the allusive man from his manor’s windows. One even claimed to have seen him shirtless, and described the image as unbelievably hot and—’”

“It does not say that,” Bruce says before reaching over and snatching the magazine from your hands. His scrunched-up face only makes you laugh harder when he throws the magazine onto the floor.

“Oh come on, that was funny!” you say through giggles. But Bruce just rolls his eyes and goes back to work. At least you got a reaction out of him, you thought. You were desperate for his attention for two reasons: 1) Along with being his best friend for years, you also harboured a little tiny crush on the man and loved every second you got to spend with him and 2) You were bored.

You sigh before reaching down to pick up the magazine and continue reading it in silence. A moment later, you hear the elevator door ding and look up to see Alfred emerge.

“Hey Alfred,” you say with a smile, happy for new company.

“Hello Miss Y/N,” he says as he approaches you and Bruce. But of course, Bruce doesn’t glance up from his monitors. “I was wondering if you would be joining us for dinner this evening?”

“I’d love to, but I have plans,” you say with a sigh.

“Plans?” you hear Bruce say as he joins the conversation. He’s still staring at his screens. You narrow your eyes before turning back to Alfred.

“Yeah, I have a date.”

“Adate?” Bruce says. He finally tears his eyes away to look at you with wide eyes. You feel suddenly on the spot. You didn’t really plan on bringing this up, not wanting an interrogation. Like this one.

“Are you just going to repeat everything I say?” you say, frustrated. Bruce blushes and directs his gaze to the floor. His jaw clenches. You give him an odd look he doesn’t see. Strange, you think, but decide to brush it off. “Yes, I have a date. Which I should go home and get ready for—”

“With who?” Bruce says just as you’re standing to leave. You hope this conversation will wrap up. You didn’t exactly want to talk to the guy you love about some date. But Bruce is looking at you again.

“A guy I met at work.” His name is James, and you hadn’t originally said yes. He had come by the café multiple times and each time asked you out. Not in an aggressive way, he backed down once you said no but he still asked every time he came, hoping for a different response. Yesterday when he asked you again, you actually thought about it. You hadn’t been on a date in a while thanks to a certain crush and it would hopefully take your mind off things. So you said yes, which took the man by surprise, but he eagerly arranged a date for tonight.

“So a complete stranger.” You huff, not understanding why Bruce is giving you such a hard time about this.

“Yes, that’s how dating works Bruce. You meet someone and get to know them and then—”

“I get it,” he says, looking away. You wonder what has gotten into him. Here you were, spending your whole afternoon with him while he barely said a word, and now suddenly he’s drilling you with 20 questions.

“Well, have fun,” Alfred says, and you’re grateful for his kind words breaking up your angry thoughts.

“Thank you, Alfred,” you stress, glaring over at Bruce. He’s still staring anywhere but at you yet hasn’t returned to his monitors. He seems angry and you don’t know why since you’re the one who’s angry. “I’ll see you later.” You smile at Alfred and quickly glance at Bruce who still isn’t looking your way. You roll your eyes before heading towards the elevator, already mentally preparing yourself for the night ahead.

“Turns out, the photocopier was unplugged the whole time!” James says, laughing at his own story. You offer a polite laugh and drink back your wine. The two of you are seated in a fancy restaurant, James’ choice. With your budget, you would have been fine eating take-out. The walls are draped in red with intricate black designs swirling around the room. The lights are low and there’s a candle at every table (thankfully they’re fake). Jazz music emits from the speakers, low enough to have a conversation.

Frankly, you felt out of place. You had put on one of your nicer dresses and thank god you did. You hated that you had no idea where you were going before getting ready. Your tight red dress stops short just past your knees with a slit on the left side.

“So tell me,” James says as he leans on the table. “Do you work at the café full time?”

Normally you’re not too embarrassed by your job, but after he had described his super fancy office job, you start to feel nervous. “Yeah, it’s tough to find good work around here,” you say with a forced laugh. James laughs back.

“You’re telling me. Before this job, I worked at this small office and the cubicle space was ridiculous…” You nod along as he shows you how out of touch he is by comparing a small, cushy office space to working 12-hour shifts at a café. Your eyes move from him to the window beside your table. For some reason, you start to wonder what Bruce is up to right now before mentally kicking yourself for doing the opposite of getting over him. So you force yourself to keep up the conversation with James.

“So what’s your plan?” he asks you and you tilt your head in confusion.

“What do you mean?”

“Well, I imagine you don’t want to be working at a café your whole life. So what’s your plan?” he asks. Though it’s true you want to find a better job, the way he asked that question was very condescending and you had to bite back a retort. What you want to say is “My plan is to ask my rich daddy to get me a job” but you don’t think he’ll appreciate the joke. Bruce would chuckle at my sarcastic remarks, if they weren’t aimed at him of course. God Y/N stop.

As you think of a way to answer the question and simultaneously keep your mind off of the billionaire, you look out the window once again. Sometimes Gotham can look really nice. Of course, you were in the nicer part of the city but it still gave you hope to see the nice skyline, quiet streets and…

Just as you’re about to turn back to James you spot something on the roof of the building across the street. You squint your eyes and you think you see two pointy ears against the sky. Just as soon as you see them, they’re gone. You’re too surprised to speak, your jaw dropping as you realize what you saw.

“What is it?” James asks, looking at where you’re staring. You quickly remember his presence and regain your composure.

“O-oh nothing, I thought I saw um…never mind,” you chuckle, as you fail to come up with a reasonable explanation. “Back to your question,” you say a bit loudly to pull his attention away from the window, which works. “My plan is to become a writer. I’ve applied to work at a few publishing agencies and soon I’ll be sending out some of my own work,” you say.

“That would be a hard job to find,” he chuckles, and again normally you would have laughed along but it seemed more like he was laughing at you than with you. “It might be time to start considering a real, more attainable job.”

You grip your silverware and wear a tight smile. “Yeah, you might be right,” you say, not wanting to cause a scene by stabbing him with your fork.

“I’d love to read your work sometime though,” he says with a smile. Not a chance, you think as you smile back. The dinner continues and you end up ordering the most expensive meal on the menu. You already know he’s going to insist he pays for the bill so you take advantage of that in compensation for his rude comments.

The whole time, you feel like you’re being watched. Of course, you know you’re being watched but every time you glance back at the roof there’s no sign of anyone. You’re now anxious to wrap the evening up to go investigate.

“Can we get the bill?” James asks.

“Of course,” the waiter says. “Would you like to split the bill?”

“No, dinner’s on me,” he sends a smile your way. You do the obligatory dance of offering to pay yourself and as expected, he reassures you it isn’t a big deal. You think he likes flashing his money.

The two of you walk outside the restaurant and over to where he’s parked his car. “Can I give you a ride home?” he asks.

“No thank you, I’d prefer to walk,” you say, already getting antsy to leave.

“Are you sure?” he gives you an incredulous look. “It’s not always safe walking the streets at night.”

“I can handle myself, trust me,” you say. And if I can’t, then I’m sure someone will swoop down to save me.

“Alright, I know when to give up,” he says. Then comes the part where you have to say goodbye and decide how to end the date. “I had a great time with you.”

“Yeah I did too,” you say. Other than his pretentious attitude, he was still one of your nicer dates. He had his kind and charming moments, and he is kind of cute. As your mind wanders over to the building across the way, an idea pops into your mind.

You take a step closer to James and notice his eyes flicker to your lips. “I-I’d really like to see you again,” he says, his confident nature faltering.

“I’ll think about it,” you say with a teasing smile. Then you step even closer to him and lean up. He meets you halfway and you kiss him. His hands grip your waist and yours rest on his shoulders, not wanting this to go too far. You pull away and he has a dumbstruck look on his face that almost causes you to laugh. He opens his eyes and looks at you in amazement.

“I-I’ll call you,” he says.

“Mmm. See you around,” you say with a smirk on your face, adding to the ambiguity of your response. You then turn around and start to walk away. You wait to hear his car start up and leave before your eyes seek the building.

You cross the street and find a fire escape on the side. You curse at your heels but still step onto the stairs. You climb them all the way to the top where you step onto the roof. It’s empty except for a chimney and an entrance onto the roof from inside.

You walk into the centre of the area. “I know you’re up here Batboy,” you call out. “The shadows can’t hide you forever.”

A moment passes before you see a figure emerge from behind the entrance, from a corner shaded in shadows. As expected, Batman comes into the light. You look at him with a scrutinizing gaze, waiting for him to say something.

You sigh before you say, “Aren’t you even going to try to explain what you’re doing?”

“I’m on a stakeout,” he responds in a register slightly lower than normal. Again, you wait on an elaboration and you receive none.

“And just what exactly are you staking out?” you ask, wanting him to say it.

You watch him realize there’s no getting out of this without the truth. “I just wanted to make sure you were safe,” he says, his eyes focused on the ground. You snort.

“Yeah right,” you say. You’re not sure what you’re supposed to do other than scold and yell at him, which you’re about to do before he speaks up.

“Why did you kiss him?” he asks, looking at you directly. You stutter, not expecting that question.

“So you were spying on me huh?” you say, even if you already knew he was. “And I can kiss whoever I damn well please thank you.”

“Please, you don’t even like the guy,” he says with frustration in his voice.

“Oh and now you’re seriously telling me how I feel? What makes you think you know me so well?” The conversation is escalating as your voices raise.

“Because I do know you. That guy was rude and arrogant–”

You were listening to us?!” you almost yell, trying to be discreet but your feelings are getting the better of you.

NoI-I,” he struggles for an explanation before sighing. “I could read your lips.”

“I can’t believe this,” you say with your head in your hands. You look at him. “You’re actually spying on me.”

You see his hands clench. “I’m not spying—”

“This is the definition of spying Br-Batman!” you almost slip with his name, wanting to have a conversation with the man under the mask. You curse at this situation. “How the hell did you even know where I was going to be?”

He opens his mouth to respond before closing it again. A few moments pass before he quietly says, “I tracked you through your phone.”

You let the information settle in before you sigh heavily. “Bruce,” you hiss quietly, not wanting anyone else to hear. You turn around with a hand on your head, trying to get a grip on this situation without your anger getting the best of you.

“I’m sorry but I-I had to.”

“Oh yeah sure. And why’s that?” you ask, still turned away from him.

There’s a silence before he says, “I-I just had to. I…You said you were going on a date and I just, I couldn’t just sitthere. I mean, I—god.”

As you listen to Bruce struggle to express his feelings, a realization hits you. You almost don’t believe it but it adds up. You turn around to look at Batman physically struggling to get his words out.

“Wait, is this because you’re jealous?” He freezes his actions and looks at you with wide eyes. He opens his mouth and stutters but no words form. Though he’s wearing a mask, you can still tell he’s blushing.

No no that’s not,” he laughs nervously. “That’s not what this is. I-I was just bored and I wanted to see—I missed—I just thought that you would be staying longer and I—”

During his ramblings, a smile blooms on your face. While he’s not looking at you, you approach him until you’re standing in front of him. You hear his breath hitch as his words tangle themselves up.

“Just shut up and kiss me.” His eyes are wide and it takes a moment for your words to process, but when they do he doesn’t hesitate. His lips crash down onto yours and you stumble back at the impact. You giggle into the kiss but don’t stop. You wrap your arms around his neck while his hands travel across your back.

Eventually the two of you separate, out of breath. You can’t stop smiling and it seems like neither can Bruce. “If you wanted me, you just had to ask,” you say teasingly. “Then we wouldn’t have had to go through all this trouble.”

Up close, you notice his blush under his mask and bite your lip as your smile stretches at the sight. “So this was all a ploy to get my attention huh?” he asks, also teasingly.

“No, it was a real date. But I may have hoped to make you a little jealous,” you admit, a blush of your own forming.

“Hmm,” he says grinning. “I just have one question.” You look up. “Who’s the better kisser?” You scoff and smack his shoulder lightly before wrapping your arms around him again.

“I don’t know, I think I’ll need to reassess,” you tease before kissing him again, this time slower and more intimate.

Before you’re done, he pulls away to say, “Wait does this mean you’re going to kiss him ag—” You pull him back into the kiss to stop his talking and he chuckles before returning his attention to your lips. And Bruce is definitely the better kisser.

“Take it,” he said. You hesitantly took the watch from the boy’s hand, not taking your eyes off him. Once you had it, Bruce looked around before saying, “Go.”

He didn’t need to tell you twice. With the watch secured, your legs became unstuck and you took off running. Your mom had been impressed with the expensive watch and laughed when you said you took it from the Waynes.

“Serves them right, rich bastards,” she said, her eyes still locked on the watch. For days after you had felt so guilty that you decided to make it up to the nice boy. With the money you hid from your mom, you went out and bought him a present.

The next time you saw Bruce Wayne without any security detail, you nervously approached the boy. You tapped him on the shoulder and he turned around, recognizing you almost immediately.

“Look, I’m sorry, I don’t have anything more for you,” he said, thinking you had come back for more.

“Actually, I came here to give you this.” You reached into your bag and pulled out a bat stuffed animal. Your hands were sweating as you gave it to him. “I-I know it’s not that cute, b-but it was all I could afford–”

You stopped talking when you saw a smile spread across Bruce’s face. He looked at you and said, “I love it!”

You were so surprised and happy, you smiled back. After that you two got to talking and eventually became friends.

You smile at the memory. Bruce had been your first real friend, and to your knowledge, you were his. Somewhere along the line you developed a crush on him which blossomed into love, but you always kept quiet. It was never worth ruining the friendship. And besides, you knew it was only one-sided.

Now you’re standing in front of his front door, with a plan in mind. You knock on the door and a few moments later, Alfred opens the door. You smile at each other.

“Miss Y/N, please come in,” he says, opening the large door.

“Thank you, Alfred,” you say, stepping into the home.

You always admired the architecture of the home, though it often makes you feel out of place. You live in a small and crappy apartment, what are you doing amongst all this fancy shit? When you were a kid, you were in shock that someone actually lived here. It looked more like a museum or a castle.

The only thing that you didn’t like about the place was how quiet it was. It made what could be a home, so empty and cold.

“Would you like a cup of tea?” Alfred asks from behind you. You turn around and smile at him. He always asks you that and you always say yes. I mean, who’s going to pass up a free drink?

“I would love that, thank you,” you say, and Alfred smiles back as he always does. You follow him to a seating area and he tells you to make yourself at home while he fetches the tea. You sit in the same chair you always do.

You think back to when you first met Alfred. You had asked him so many questions, you couldn’t believe that butlers were real! He was patient as he answered every question, even the silly ones. He always made you feel welcome and never treated you differently for being of a lower class, same as Bruce.

You remember one time when you were little you had snuck out to see Bruce, as you often did. It was sometime after his parents had passed away; your visits became more frequent after the incident. Your mother never cared where you went, or even if you came home really, so it wasn’t a problem.

Alfred had made you tea and you accidentally dropped the teacup, shattering it on the floor. You got on your knees and started crying while picking up the pieces. You thought he would get mad at you or hit you. Instead, the butler leaned down and gave you a warm smile while wiping your tears away.

“Don’t worry,” he said. “Accidents happen. Bruce once made the same mistake, you know. Perhaps I should invest in some plastic tea cups.”

You smiled once you realized he wasn’t mad. He took your hand and led you to the kitchen while he poured another cup. You were very careful not to drop that one.

Now, Alfred returns with the tea set on a silver platter. He takes his seat across from you and you both silently take a sip. Then, you set down your cup and get to the matter at hand.

“Where’s Bruce?” you ask, causing Alfred to sigh.

“Busy, I’m afraid.” He gives you a sympathetic smile, the same one he’s been giving you for weeks.

Bruce Wayne was always busy these days. Or should you say, Batman was. You found out about his secret life as a vigilante fairly quickly when you noticed a change in Bruce, despite his attempts at hiding it from you. You understand that Batman is important to him, and it’s important to the city, but you haven’t seen your best friend in weeks.

Whenever you came, you would sometimes catch glimpses of him before he retreated to that damn bat cave and Alfred told you he was busy. You’re very frustrated, especially since there’s something you’ve been meaning to tell him.

Just as you are about to march over to that elevator, you hear it ding. You crane your neck to see Bruce emerging wearing a black t-shirt and sweatpants. Not exactly the billionaire the public envisions, but it’s the one you know and love.

Before Alfred can interfere, you jump up from your seat and call out, “Bruce!”

He turns to see you and looks like a deer caught in headlights. He seems surprised that you’re here. He knows that if he runs now, you’ll just follow. He looks helplessly at Alfred but it’s too late for that. So instead, you watch him clear his throat and look you in the eyes for the first time in weeks.

“Hi Y/N,” he says. You wait for him to say something along the lines of “Hey, sorry I’ve been avoiding you, I’m so happy to see you!” But instead, he just stands there awkwardly. You know if you get angry with him that you’ll lose your chance so you ignore your rage for now.

“I was wondering if you wanted to hang out,” you ask.

“I can’t, I’m busy,” he says and starts to move away but you step in front of him again.

“But you’ve been busy for weeks,” you say. You see guilt cloud his eyes for a moment. You take a step closer. “I miss you.”

He looks at you and you see his jaws clench. Then he’s looking anywhere but you. “I’m sorry,” he says, before walking away. Your heart drops.

“Bruce wait I—” you try to say, but he’s gone before you can finish. You’re left looking lost. You really needed to tell him but it seems like he barely even cares. You can’t say you didn’t try, you tell yourself, but it still doesn’t feel right.

“I’m sorry about him, Miss Y/N,” Alfred says. You sigh and plaster on a thin smile.

“It’s not your fault, Alfred,” you say. “I understand, he’s doing more important things. I just really needed to talk to him about something.”

Alfred looks like he wants to argue about the “more important things” bit but he knows nothing he can say will change your mind. “Is there anything I can help you with?” he says.

You look up and realize you probably should tell Alfred. And since Bruce isn’t around…

“I’m leaving,” you tell him. You stand strong as you watch the butler’s face falter.

“Leaving where?”

“Metropolis. I’ve been offered a good job in the city and I’m moving there tomorrow,” you say like ripping off a band-aid. Still, your heart breaks a little watching sadness overcome the butler’s face.

“I see,” he says. Your eyes analyse his face, hoping he’d say more.

“I-I know it’s sudden, but the offer was only available for so long and I really need the money and of course I’ll miss you guys but—”

Hands on your shoulders cut you off. You look and see Alfred smile with glassy eyes. The sight causes your eyes to sting. “You don’t have to explain yourself, I understand,” he says. Tears fill your eyes at Alfred’s kindness and understanding, even now. You wrap your arms around his middle and after a moment, he hugs you back.

He’s been the father figure you never had through the years. He always treated you like family. “I really will miss you,” you say, as a tear slips down your face. You hadn’t realized how hard this would be.

“I’ll miss you too.” You tighten your grasp for a moment before you let go. He wipes away your tear and you laugh softly. He’s still taking care of you.

“Don’t forget me while I’m gone,” you say, trying to lighten the mood. You step back and prepare to leave.

“Never,” he says, causing your heart to ache. “Don’t forget to visit.”

“Never.” You both smile at each other. Then you walk towards the door before pausing when you remember something. Turning back to face him, you say, “Oh and don’t tell Bruce. At least not until I’ve left the city.”

Alfred frowns. “Don’t you want to say goodbye?”

You look back towards the elevator doors that separate you from your Bruce. “I think I already did,” you whisper. You look back at Alfred one last time. “Goodbye Alfred.”

“Goodbye Miss Y/N.” You take one last look at Wayne Manor before you leave and close the doors behind you.

This city really never sleeps, you think as the noise from outside floods your apartment. Your window is open because it gets too hot in your apartment and of course your landlord doesn’t add air conditioning units to this dump. That’s one thing you won’t miss. This shitty apartment, the broken-down building, the asshole landlord, and the crazy tenants that you run into every once and a while.

You’re packing away the last of your stuff for the morning. It isn’t much, but you still don’t want to leave any of it behind. You look around the place and think maybe you’ll miss it a bit. After all it was yours.

As you’re folding one of your shirts, a voice rings out, “You’re leaving?”

Your heartbeat picks up and you jump, ready to run when you see the Batman standing on the landing outside your window. His dark figure blocks out the lights from the city and if you didn’t know him, you would be scared.

“Jesus Christ Batman, you scared the shit out of me!” you yell. You almost let slip his real name but you recognized the window is still open and don’t want any risks.

“You’re leaving?” he repeats, as he steps into your apartment. You really didn’t expect this. After your heartbeat slows back down, you start to panic. He wasn’t supposed to know, not like this. Why—

“So, Alfred told you huh?” you scoff, slightly annoyed at the butler for not listening to you.

“Why did I have to find out from Alfred at all?” he says, his voice laced with anger. Though your room is dark, you can still see his eyes staring at you. “I mean why—why didn’t you tell me?”

“First of all, close the window, I don’t want the whole block to hear our conversation,” you say. He rolls his eyes but moves to shut the window. He also closes the curtains for good measure. You wonder what any bystander watching would think of Batman crawling into someone’s apartment and closing the curtains. You ignore the blush on your face as you start to prepare yourself for a conversation you thought would never come. “Secondly, I tried to tell you, remember? When I came by earlier?”

You watch him clench his jaw as he realizes. “I was busy.” You can’t stop the scoff that leaves your mouth. “Besides, why didn’t you tell me sooner?”

You try to restrain yourself from snapping at him. But your anger’s starting to slip out after being pent up inside for so long. “When would that have been Bruce? You have been ignoring me for weeks now.” You see him tense up. “In fact, this is the longest conversation we’ve had in a month.”

Behind his mask, you imagine his face muscles clenching up like they do when he gets frustrated. You think you see his eyes look down, almost ashamed. “I’m sorry about that.”

You snort out a laugh that has his gaze quickly back on you. “Yeah right.”

“I—”

“And can you please take off that mask? I want to talk to Bruce Wayne, not Batman.” You want to properly look at the man you love, probably for the last time in a long while. You know Bruce doesn’t like to take off the cowl while he’s out, frankly you wonder why he takes it off at all. But he relents and lifts the mask off his face. His black makeup is smudged across his face and his hair is a mess but it’s your Bruce. “Thank you.”

“Why are you leaving?” he asks, and you notice a pain in his eyes that makes you sick with guilt. But you’ve been hurt for a while now, and that didn’t stop him.

“I got a job offer in Metropolis.” He scoffs. You know he hates that place. He thinks it’s too squeaky clean and pretentious. You just think it’s because he’s never been anywhere but Gotham and his attachment to this damn city clouds his judgment. “It’s at a newspaper company and the pay is really good.”

“What happened to your old job?”

Your jaws clench. “I lost it a couple of weeks ago. Cutbacks.” Which he would’ve known had he not been avoiding you.

“But I’m sure there’s another—”

“There isn’t,” you say. He looks at you and you sigh. “I’m going to be kicked out of the apartment by the end of the week. I…I haven’t been able to pay rent.”

“Well if that’s the problem, then I can just give you the money—”

“No Bruce.” You let your head drop into your hands and take a breath. “That isn’t a long-term solution and besides, I told you that I would never take money from you.” He’s dealt with a lot of people trying to get to him for his money and you made it clear early on that you weren’t going to be one of those people.

“But I’m giving it to you,” he says, sounding frustrated but also a little desperate. You just close your eyes.

“The answer is no.”

He stands still and looks at you, his eyes piercing, as he tries to come up with a solution. But you’ve already made your peace with this decision. This causes him more frustration. He growls. “There has to be another way. I mean, you can’t just leave.”

“Why not Bruce?” Your eyes start to fill with tears the longer this went on. Why did he have to make this so hard for you?

He seems caught off-guard by this question. “Because…you just can’t.” Your hopes die out and defeat settles in.

“The way I see it…there’s nothing left for me here,” you say as a tear falls down your cheek. His eyebrows furrow, not understanding why you’re thinking like this. “I’ve had to scrounge for money since I was born into this city until I finally earned enough to afford a place and I end up living in this shithole. I’ve never been able to get a job long enough to make any real money, I’ve been just getting by my whole life. And this job offers a chance to break free from all of that. Why shouldn’t I take it?”

He stares at you and it seems like he isn’t breathing. “But what about…I mean, what about…me? Am I not something?” he asks and the vulnerability tugs at your heartstrings. To have a moment like this with Bruce makes you falter in your decision, but you realize this won’t last.

“Bruce…you’re my best friend,” you say and he flinches. He shakes his head, as if he already knows what you’re going to say. “But it looks like our lives are going in different directions now—”

“I’m sorry that I ignored you, I am—” You make a bold move and put your finger against his lips. It causes your heart to race but you needed him to listen. You try not to focus on how soft his lips feel.

“Just listen to me,” you say. Bruce still looks surprised and panicked by your move, so you pull your hand away. For a moment, it looks like his face tries to chase it but you ignore that hopeless thought. “Obviously you’ve been busy lately dedicating your time to the Batman, and that’s awesome because you’re helping the city. But, it doesn’t leave a lot of room for me. For us.” He’s shaking his head but you have to keep going. “I just think we’re at a stage in life where we go our separate ways. That doesn’t mean we can’t still be friends—”

“No,” he says, his breathing seeming to quicken. It doesn’t seem like he has anything else to say. You can see him freaking out but you have to get through this. No matter how much it hurts.

Tears prick at your eyes and your voice cracks, “I’ll miss you—”

“Stop! This…this isn’t happening. You’re not leaving. You can’t leave,” his voice cracks as well. He’s staring right at you and you almost want to relent. You almost want to stay. “You can’t.”

You close your eyes and turn around so that you’re not facing him. You can’t watch the man you love fall apart because of you. You squeeze your fists in frustration. “God, Bruce, why are you making this so hard?” Your voice is raised as your emotions build up inside of you.

“Because you’re not leaving.”

Why?” You turn around with tears clouding your vision. Your chin wobbles as your eyes move back and forth across his face. “Give me one good reason why I should stay.”

There’s a suffocating silence that fills the room. You close your eyes and let the tears fall. There’s your answer, you suppose. You turn to your suitcase and resume packing your clothes when you hear, “Me.”

You freeze with a shirt clutched in your hands. You drop it and slowly turn around. “What?” you ask, wanting to know if you heard right.

“Stay here for me,” he says and you’re so shocked by him opening up that you don’t know what to say. He takes a step towards you. “I don’t want you to leave.” He keeps walking until he’s standing right in front of you. You feel his hand hesitantly reach for yours and you let him hold it. He squeezes your hand and gives you a look of utter desperation. “Please stay.”

You try to ignore the tears you see forming in his dark eyes. “I don’t…I don’t want to get left behind again.”

“And you won’t.” His other gloved hand comes up to cup your face. You lean into it. “I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you, I just got so wrapped up in it all and…I’m sorry.” You nod but there’s nothing left for you to say. You wait as he continues. “Y/N I…” You watch him struggle to form the words but when he does, his eyes shine. “I love you.”

You lose your breath. Your eyes are blown open. “W-what?” you ask. But before you get your hopes up, you have to ask, “As a friend, right?”

“No.” He looks down and swallows deeply before looking back at you. “As more than that.” Your ears are suddenly ringing with the sounds of your beating heart. “I know I haven’t been the best at showing you lately, but I love you. I’ve loved you since we were kids but I could never find the courage to tell you before now.” You wait with baited breath as you watch your dreams come true before you. “So please, stay here with me. Give me another chance, I promise I’ll do better. I don’t want to lose you, I can’t.”

A tear falls rolls down his face past the smudged makeup. Without another thought, you reach up and pull his face down to yours and smash your lips together. He takes a moment to respond before leaning into the kiss. He holds the back of your head with his hand while the other wraps around your waist. His lips are as soft as they felt.

Eventually the two of you pull apart for air. You try to catch your breath while you’re both smiling. “I love you too,” you tell him and his grin widens causing you to giggle out of pure joy.

“Does this mean that you’ll stay?” he asks, hope shining in his eyes.

You lick your lips and break your stare to look around your apartment. “Well, I’m still broke, out of a job and about to be homeless but—”

“Stay with me,” Bruce cuts in.

You huff out a laugh at his boldness. “What?”

“Stay with me. There’s plenty of space for you and you won’t have to worry about living in poor conditions or dealing with your asshole landlord.” You laugh. Bruce looks seriously into your eyes. “Come stay with me.”

“Are you sure?” you ask hesitantly. You only just said you loved one another, it’s a big jump to live together.

“Of course I’m sure.” You can’t stop looking at how truly happy he is. You haven’t seen him smiling this much since…well ever. And it would be nice to be able to see him every day no matter how busy he gets.

“Okay,” you say with a sheepish smile. “I still need a job.”

“I’ll help you look for one,” he says right away. “So…does this mean you’re staying?”

“Yeah,” you say with a smile. Suddenly you’re swept off your feet as Bruce hugs you and twirls you around. You’re both laughing and the happiness you feel now makes the last of your anger slip away.
