DIY 2 Types of Ice Dyeing: With Bleach and Dye

I’ve posted over 100 DIY Dyeing tutorial links. You can find bleach dyeing DIYs here, dyeing here, and tie dying here.

For the DIY Bleach Ice Dye project you only need:

  • 100% cotton fabric
  • bleach crystals
  • ice

For the regular DIY Ice Dye project you need:

  • fiber reactive dyes
  • fabric (see post)
  • textile detergent
  • soda ash fixer
  • ice

Both methods have tutorials on HonestlyWTF’s Blog:

  • Ice Dyeing with Bleach here.
  • Ice Dyeing here.

Videos of the Ice Dyeing Process below

You can also tie dye with this DIY from Honestly WTFhere.

DIY - WATERMELON SHORTS

Because who doesn’t love watermelon, specially on shorts! I had an absolute blast putting this tutorial together. These shorts are perfect for any music festival, because as we all know, anything goes at these events. I found a dope pair of watermelon shorts on NastyGal.com, but I figured I would just make my own for a fraction of the price. $85 vs. $15 bucks, I’ll take the DIY version any day.

MATERIALS:

  • High waisted shorts
  • Green Fabric Paint
  • Black Fabric Paint
  • White Fabric Paint
  • Fuchsia Rit Fabric Dye
  • Paint Brushes
  • Bucket

HOW TO:

1) Begin by prepping your bucket with hot water over a sink or outdoor surface.

2) Follow the instructions on the Rit fabric dye package label and dye your shorts accordingly.

3) After your shorts have been dyed, washed, and dried, you can begin by painting the green bottom trim of your shorts. I would begin by finishing the front of your shorts, allow to dry, then move onto the back.

4) Now move onto your black fabric paint and begin to paint round watermelon seeds throughout your shorts. Allow to dry.

5) Once your green trim and black seeds are dry, finish off by painting the top of the trim with your white fabric paint. Allow to dry, and you’re set!

XOXO - Drea

PS. Please allow the shorts 72 hours to dry before putting them through the wash.

PSS. You can apply this tutorial and make strawberry shorts instead too! Just substitute the fuchsia dye with red fabric dye.

Galaxy Leggings

Easy tutorial to create custom print leggings with the use of acrylic paint. Tutorial over here:)

Do you love decorative pins, but hate poking holes in your clothes? DIY TEMPORARY BUTTON COVERS (less than $20 for materials; makes up to 50 button covers)

Step 1: Measure the buttons you want to cover. You will need these measurements before you purchase any supplies.

Step 2: Get Materials.

  • Glass Dome Cabochons - $3+ for a multipack on Amazon (same size or larger than the buttons you want to cover)
  • Reusable Double-Sided Adhesive Dots - $4+ mulitipack on Amazon (same size or smaller than the buttons you want to cover)
  • (optional: see Step 3 | Method 1) Acrylic Paint Sampler Set - $7+ on Amazon
  • (optional: see Step 3 | Method 2) 5 Minute Clear Epoxy - $5+ on Amazon
image

Step 3 | Method 1: Paint your design directly onto the back of the cabochon.

  • I recommend acrylic paint and/or nail polish (I guess you could technically use oil paint if you’re really fancy).
  • You can use an adhesive dot to hold the cabochon in place while you paint.
  • If you do not own painting supplies you can use a toothpick for fine details and a piece of sponge for background colors.
  • Remember that you’re going to flip the cabochon over once the paint dries. Your image will be viewed through the front. This means:
    ‣  Text will appear backwards.
    ‣  Paint layers will appear in reverse order.

Step 3 | Method 2: Print/draw your design on paper, then glue the cabochon over it.

  • I recommend printing/drawing on sturdy photo paper or cardstock.
  • Use a generous amount of 5 minute clear epoxy to glue the cabochon to the printed design.
  • Once the epoxy is set, cut away excess paper with scissors or nail clippers.
  • Paint a final layer of epoxy over the back of the button cover to seal off the paper backing and make it waterproof.

Step 4: Use adhesive dots to attach your new button covers to your buttons.

.

The fact that these adhesive dots are reusable means you should be able to easily peel your button covers off and stick them back on several times before they lose their adhesive.

Pro:The size of your button covers is not limited to the size of your button holes. You can stick a 25 mm button cover onto a 15mm button. Just peel it off when you need to undo your buttons, and stick it back on after.

Con:Your button cover might pop off accidentally.

.

You also have the option of using epoxy to permanently attach the button covers to your buttons. Just make sure you protect your button design with an extra layer of acrylic sealant/clear epoxy if it’s going to end up in your washing machine.
