Busy weekend at the studio. Our artists have been printing ready for the London Illustration Fair in Hoxton Arches opening this Friday! You’re in for a treat
Ghost[ed.] is a suite of eight limited-edition stone lithographs by eight artists, published in 2015. The project to realise it was devised and co-ordinated by Sue Baker Kenton and Nicole Polonsky, who met at one of ELP’s breakfasts for new members. Joining them as contributors to the suite are ELP’s own Caroline Whitehead, open access-user Edit Toaso, as well as Gino Ballantyne, Jessie Brennan, Tim Brown and Hen Coleman. Ghost[ed.] will be launched at an exhibition at Dean Clough in Halifax which runs from Saturday 13 June – Sunday 6 September 2015.
Ghost[ed.] evolved from the ‘ghost’, or residual image, which remains within the lithography stone after printing. The ghost is usually removed entirely by the process of graining. In Ghost[ed.], graining was only partial. This allowed the residual image to be retained and printed again as a reduced version of the original.
Ghost[ed.] lithographs emerged sequentially: after an initial ‘catalyst’ image which got the project underway, contributors were invited in turn to devise a new ‘key’ image in response to the ghost of the one that came immediately before. The two elements were then incorporated into a single print, with one superimposed over the other - a key image by one artist and the ghost of the previous one by another. Instead of being erased, the ghost is an active and dynamic component of the eight pictorial schemes.
We are not aware of any precedent in lithography practice for combining ghost and key images in this way.You can read more about the suite and see images of the complete edition at www.ghosted.co.uk.

We’ve spent the last few months getting the ELP studio in ship shape and fitting it out with brand new equipment!
Helen Ashton our technician took on the task of managing the project and has done an absolutely fantastic job. The last few months has been filled with a shed load of planning, a lot of demolition and construction work, lots of heavy lifting, loads of teamwork and many many tea breaks!!
Now, the space is complete and we have more space and equipment than we ever imagined we’d have!
On our website we’ll be giving you a breakdown of all the changes that have happened at the ELP studio over the past 6 months.
Last January this short documentary was featured on this very blog!
Way back in 2013, we met Greg, a friend of Catherine, at the first Independent Label Market we did in the July. He spoke of their plans to create a piece to commemorate Stephen’s family’s long running involvement in the process of die stamping and to raise awareness of his trade as it moves into it’s fourth generation. Greg, Catherine and other close friends worked together to create this fantastic piece, which appeared on the ELP blog just after it’s release last year. Later in the year the film was nominated for a short film award and ended up being screened at BAFTA! The film is beautifully made and shows the true charm of the process and the equipment.
On Tuesday 21st July, father and daughter team Stephen and Catherine Perrott will be joining us to discuss the traditional printing techniques that their family have used for four generations.
Small world eh!
You can see more about Perrott and the upcoming talk here
We hope you can make it along to the talk next Tuesday - it’s free after all!
