Chloe was pissed and it was taking everything Marinette had to keep her from going after Adrien. Even being attached to her was barely keeping her in the apartment.

“You can’t go around fighting anyone who says something bad about me, even if they deserve it.” Chloe grumbled above her and Marinette was content to let her if it meant she stayed put. “We don’t even know what he said for that matter.”

“Whatever it was got his mommy down here to grill you. That’s more than enough for me. Everything is always someone else’s fault. I was a brat but at least I was honest about it. Adrien didn’t ever get in trouble when we were little because when he did do something, granted it was rare, he always had someone else to take the blame. Me, his bodyguard, his father. I swear all he had to do was say Gabriel told him to do something and his mother let him off scott free.” That actually made a lot of sense. He seemed to do everything in his power to avoid confrontation until it was too late so passing off the blame was definitely in his wheelhouse.

“He knows how to work the system and where the pressure points are. It makes sense. Everyone does what they can to get what they want, he just came up with a strategy more suited to his situation.” Chloe let out a scoff.

“Well I want you to be happy and if that prick keeps messing with you I’ll be forced to take drastic measures.” Marinette just gave a tired sigh.

“He can’t do anything to us. My parents aren’t going to suddenly turn on me because Adrien told his mother I’m a terrible person. Damian’s father isn’t going to pull our agreement and none of my clients will believe gossip either. Not to mention I have you. Everything will work itself out, I promise.” She was finally starting to relax, so of course a new voice chimed in.

“I always did wonder why you resented me so much. I just figured it had to do with the way your mother was with you.” Chloe was up and off the couch in seconds. Marinette could only watch as she began to tear up before running out the door. She only vaguely noticed Selina running after her.

“You just had to poke the hornet’s nest didn’t you? Do you enjoy opening wounds that are better left closed?” It took her a moment to realize those words and that tone came out of her and not her Maman. Everyone but Damian was staring at her in shock, he just had a small smirk on his face. “I don’t care what you came here for, but I want you out and I don’t want to see you here again. This was the only safe space Chloe had and you just destroyed it.” Sabine was the first to recover.

“You heard her, please leave.” Mme. Agreste was still staring at Marinette as though trying to figure out what she was but Nathalie spoke up indignantly.

“What about the video?”

“I’ll send a copy to you by courier. There’s no reason you need to watch it here.” Nathalie continued to argue with Sabine, who seemed ready to throw them out, literally. Marinette would let her if it meant she could transform and go find Chloe. Not to mention she really didn’t like the way Mme. Agreste was staring at her.

“It’s fine Nathalie, we don’t want to overstay our welcome.”

“Too late.” Marinette’s hands flew to her mouth when she realized that, once again, came from her. What the hell was wrong with her? The adults were all frowning at her. Her maman looked concerned, Nathalie looked offended, and Mme. Agreste just looked confused.

“She’s not wrong.” She had to force herself not to sigh as they all turned on Damian. He sounded bored but she could see his amusement in the way he fought to keep his expression neutral. At least someone was enjoying this. “Do you need someone to show you the door or can you find your own way out?” Mme. Agreste narrowed her eyes at him.

“We’ll be fine on our own, thank you Mr. Wayne.” She walked out and Nathalie glared indiscriminately around the room before following. Damian let out a scoff once they heard the door to the street close.

“That woman claims to be an empath?”

“Feeling people’s emotions and understanding what causes them are two completely different skill sets.” Dear Kwami, she was spending too much time around Damian and Chloe if she was developing this much snark. “I need to go find Chloe.”

“No.” She could only blink at her maman, not processing the denial. “Selina will find her and how will it look if you go chasing after Chloe as Ladybug when these things happen? Not to mention we need to talk.” Luka pulled Damian out of the room. Traitors.

“Talk about what exactly?” Arguing about going after Chloe was not a battle she was likely to win but if she could get this over with quickly she could sneak out when she went down to the bakery.

“You need to stop and deal with what happened to you.” That… was not what she expected.

“I am dealing with it.” The look Sabine was giving her reminded her of all the times she’d snuck cookies for Tikki in the middle of the night and they’d ask her about it. She really should have just told them she was eating them or taking them to school but no, she had to say she had no idea what they were talking about. This time though, she wasn’t lying.

“No you’re not. You’re pretending that nothing has changed and avoiding the things that have. You haven’t been up here since you told us what happened. You avoid your wheelchair unless there are no other options. You’ve been running yourself into the ground to make sure you don’t have time to feel the things you don’t want to. I’m not sure if it’s just because you need to feel strong for everyone or because somewhere inside you, you haven’t really processed the fact that Hawkmoth is gone, but you don’t have to hide. Not from us or yourself.”

The longer she talked, the harder it was for Marinette to breathe for some reason. She wasn’t avoiding anything, she just had responsibilities, things she had to do. She just hadn’t been to the apartment because she was busy. It wasn’t like she’d been avoiding the bakery. Yes, she’d been taking on too much, but it was just a habit, not running away. Why couldn’t she breathe? Why was everything blurry all of a sudden? When she managed to focus on her surroundings again she was in her Maman’s arms sobbing. She had no idea why.

As they were leaving the park Damian got a text from Marinette saying she, Chloe, and Selina were headed to the bakery and asking them to join. He was just going to ignore it but Luka was reading over his shoulder.

“Best pastries in Paris and Mari might need help packing or carrying some of her stuff. She hasn’t even gotten her sewing machine to the hotel yet.” Great, he was being relegated to a pack mule. Not to mention he’d have to be cordial with Selina for the duration or risk the ire of everyone else. He was more than a little disturbed that the girls had bonded with her so quickly.

“Fine, but I don’t want to listen to any lectures about my behavior.” Luka scanned the area before pulling him into a side hug and kissing his temple. He let go almost immediately because he knew how uncomfortable such displays made him. It was nice to have someone that actually respected his boundaries.

“No lectures, at least not from me. I’d be cautious around Sabine though. After that little tirade you went on when you found out Selina was coming she’ll probably get on you about manners.” Damian groaned in response. He’d forgotten about that.

“We need to get there first so she doesn’t have time to imprint on the woman. I’m not walking into that minefield.” He heard Luka cough to cover a laugh but ignored it in order to speed up. He could not afford to leave Selina and Sabine alone together for any period of time. He was at a near jog when he entered the bakery but stopped abruptly enough that Luka ran into him. Sabine was sitting at a table with two women. One of them was Nathalie, the other he assumed was Mme. Agreste. What the hell was this?

“Hello boys, did you come here for lunch?” Sabine’s voice was mildly strained. It wasn’t distress but it was obvious something was wrong.

“We’re meeting the girls and Selina.” There was a question in Luka’s tone and Damian noticed him glance back at the door. Depending on what Adrien told his mother and what she believed it might be a good idea for them to stop them from coming here. Neither of the girls had said much about what happened when they went to heal the woman but Chloe had been extremely short with everyone ever since. Sabine frowned at the women across from her.

“I don’t mind if you want to speak with Marinette but you will not talk down to or poke at Chloe. She has made a lot of progress in the last few months and she gets enough crap from her own parents.” Nathalie’s face tightened at the command in the woman’s tone but Mme. Agreste just studied her for a moment.

“I find it odd that you’re so protective of a girl that tormented your daughter.” The way Sabine narrowed her eyes at the woman made Damian move to better shield Luka. The tension in the air was stifling. It felt like a bomb was about to go off.

“No offense, but I’m not about to explain myself or take parenting advice from a woman who admits to leaving her own child in the control of an abusive father.” Nathalie opened her mouth to respond but Mme. Agreste put a hand on her shoulder to stop her.

“Fair enough. I have no wish to antagonize anyone. I just want to hear about what’s been going on from your daughter.” Wonderful, Adrien was still blaming Marinette for everything. He could only imagine what nonsense he’d been spouting to cause his mother to come here of all places.

“Why don’t you just look at the video evidence? It would be more efficient than getting multiple biased opinions.” Damian forced himself not to flinch as all three women turned to look at him. He didn’t like the way Mme. Agreste was studying him.

“I prefer to talk to people face to face and get a feel for them Mr. Wayne. Not to mention I have a feeling I need to apologize for my son’s behavior. Despite his father’s constant surveillance on his physical person he’s been mostly left to his own devices as far as his mind is concerned. To say I find his current status disturbing is an understatement.”

“Disturbing because he’s a selfish coward, or just because it’s obvious?” Luka pinched his arm but he was already cursing himself mentally. Marinette was obviously rubbing off on him with the way his mouth was working before his brain caught up. Nathalie was glaring at him but Sabine was fighting a small smile. He was spared any further slips by the girls walking in.

Chloe jerked to a stop, much like he had, with Marinette on her back. Both of their faces were blank. Selina caught the mood immediately and frowned at the two women, stepping in front of the others to block their sightline. She raised an eyebrow at him but he just shrugged in response. He didn’t like the idea of Mme. Agreste talking to Marinette but he didn’t know why exactly. Granted, with the way Mari was hanging on to Chloe to calm her down, her mother wasn’t the only one worried about Mme. Agreste’s influence on the girl.

“Mme. Cheng, this is my father’s fiancé, Selina Kyle.” Sabine looked Selina over briefly before giving her a bright smile.

“Of course, Mari has told us how helpful you’ve been to the girls. It’s wonderful to meet you. And please, call me Sabine.” Oh God, they were bonding already. He was screwed now. Selina returned the smile.

“The feeling is mutual I assure you.” Sabine looked past her to the girls

“Mari, where’s your chair?” She just tightened her grip on Chloe.

“At the hotel. It’s not really that useful here.” There was a warning in her tone. He didn’t know why but Sabine seemed to.

“I understand that but you’re going to end up giving Chloe back problems if you keep this up. Not to mention how expensive it was. It isn’t just a decoration Mari.” Chloe flinched and Mari was doing an impressive imitation of her mother’s glare.

“I don’t mind and we can always have Digg bring it if we decide to go somewhere else.” Chloe was staring at the floor and he’d never heard her sound so timid. He glanced back to Mme. Agreste and she looked stunned. Sabine went to Chloe and lifted her head.

“I wasn’t implying that you were complaining. Mari needs to get used to using it and you deserve a break too.” She was frowning between the two of them. “But, you both obviously need the contact so I’ll drop it for now. Mari, Mme. Agreste wants to talk to you about some things that Adrien has been telling her.” Chloe actually glared at the woman while Mari just seemed to shrink.

“I’d rather she just watch the video. There’s nothing I can tell her that isn’t there.” Mme. Agreste looked ready to argue but everyone in the room besides Nathalie was glaring at her.

“Why don’t you two head up. I’ll send the boys up with pastries in a bit.” Chloe practically jogged out the back. Sabine sighed and turned back to the table. “Mari didn’t even talk to us about what happened, we had to watch it as well. I’m fairly certain the only ones she’s opened up to about it are Chloe and Luka.” She raised an eyebrow and Damian and he just shook his head at her. They both avoided the subject. He didn’t know her reasons, but after the fiasco of saying Lila attacked her to get back at him, he didn’t want to risk screwing up that badly again.

“Why does your daughter need a wheelchair? The last time I saw her she seemed completely fine.” Sabine and Selina turned almost identical glares on Nathalie but she was still frowning after the girls.

“She was attacked after she announced herself as the designer for Functional Fashion. She’s paralyzed.” That was technically a true statement. Sabine wasn’t happy about having to lie about what actually happened but she understood the necessity. Apparently this was her compromise. Nathalie just blinked at her.

“That must be quite an adjustment.” Mme. Agreste looked surprised by her own words.

“It would be easier if my daughter hadn’t spent so long avoiding any and all negative emotions but we’re getting through it. The biggest issue has been our home unfortunately, so Chloe offered for Mari to stay with her until things get sorted out. Despite her parents’ objections.” Selina let out an annoyed sigh.

“Those people have no business having a child. I’m tempted to have Bruce sabotage her father’s next campaign just for the hell of it at this point.” The disgust in Selina’s tone was impressive. “I’ve been running interference but that’s not a sustainable solution.”

“You’re not adopting her or convincing father to.” She raised an eyebrow at him and Damian began cursing internally in every language he could think of. He was about to get a new sibling.

I was just thinking. I want Emilie to be the peacock and I want her to be evil and when/if Gabriel brings her back I want her to be angry and all like “well it took you long enough but I’m not surprised you’ve never done anything right” to him and him be all like “yes dear” “I missed you dear” I love you dear" and have him be treated badly by her almost like the way he treats Adrien but its just a thought.

Yo was I really supposed to find out myself that the name Adrien is almost written the same and sounds like the french “a rien” which means “has nothing”? And that Agreste then strongly reminds of “à rester” meaning “to remain”?

So Adriens name is basically “Has nothing to remain”

Which… I mean concidering what the fuck happened in both parts of the season 4 finale to his life, with non of it even remotely fixed, I would say: YEAH, accurate!

Or that Emilie sounds like “et me lier” which in addition to the “à rester” last name basically means “and bind/link me to remain”? Which is…

… also accurate

OrthatAmélie literally has its roots in “améliorer” which means “improving”? (if I didn’t already think she is a Sentihuman as well then I definitely would now)

Oh and “Marine” from Marinette sounds like the female version of “sea (colored)”, and combined with her suffixe -ette it would mean “little sea” which at least somewhat explains her random blue eyes concidering the her family’s genetics we have seen lol

Did it really have to notice all of this myself in French classes just so it can distract me so hard that I learned absolutely NOTHING today? xD

Fanfiction Prompt

Crack prompt: Emilie actually keeps waking up, but she’s one of those people who wakes up violently, so she keeps hitting her head on the inside of the glass and knocking herself out again. This has been going on since a month after she was put in the tube, Gabriel is just never down there when it happens.

via Tiwaz

sabertoothwalrus:

I REALLY love @mirrorroad’s concept of Emilie Agreste being a horror actress, and just generally uncanny-looking. Imagine how the episode Sandboy would have gone, if tons of people in paris have nightmares starring Adrien’s mom, and having said nightmares physically manifest (that Adrien has to fight) ️️

Nathalie falls for paon, not knowing that paon isEmilie.

she is in love with two personas belonging to the same woman.

What if Monarch sees a possible future of an older him and Nathelie in a relationship, and he has to choose between Nathalie and Emilie?

What if Monarch sees a possible future where he sees an adult Adrien saying that he doesn’t want Gabriel in his life, and he has to choose between Adrien and Emilie?

If Gabriel truly loved Emilie he never would’ve abused the only part that’s left of her in her child sorry not sorry

Masterlist

Written for Maribat March Day 30 - Goodbye

Bruce picked up his phone on the second ring. It wasn’t unusual for him to get phone calls at eleven o'clock at night - he was a busy man, after all. What was unusual was the fact that the call was from an unknown number. Bruce very rarely gave out his personal number. “Hello?”

“Bruce?” a tiny voice questioned through the phone.

“Emilie?” Bruce recognized her voice, even though it had been ten years since the last time he spoke to Emilie Graham de Vanily (now Emilie Agreste). He never knew what had happened to her, just that one day she stopped answering his emails and her phone number was disconnected. Bruce wanted to reconnect with her, but at the time it seemed like Emilie chose not to speak to him on purpose.

“I’m sorry for calling so late at night. I know we haven’t spoken in a long time, but I’m in Gotham and I need your help.”

Bruce didn’t hesitate for even a moment. “What do you need?”

Twenty minutes later, Bruce pulled up in front of Gotham International Airport. He didn’t recognize Emilie at first, not until he got out of the car and she called his name.

“Bruce!” Emilie had changed. What surprised Bruce was that the first thing he noticed was not the black eye that marred her face, but the little blonde boy who stood at her side.

“Hello, Emilie,” said Bruce, pointedly ignoring the fact that she hadn’t told him about her son.

“Hello, Bruce. This is Adrien,” she introduced.

“Hello.” Adrien greeted Bruce quietly, his eyes trained at the ground. The white cast on his arm was decorated with little doodles. Bruce assumed that Emilie had drawn them with the pen she tucked behind her ear.

They all got into Bruce’s car with little fanfare. Emilie sat in the passenger seat. Adrien sat in the back and was asleep before they left the parking lot.

“Did your husband give you that black eye?”

Emilie didn’t waste words explaining the situation. “Yes.”

“What about Adrien’s arm?”

“I told Gabriel a long time ago that if he ever touched Adrien, I would leave him. Either he forgot or didn’t believe me. I’m keeping true to my word. In the morning I’m going to a lawyer to file for divorce papers and a restraining order, and to press charges for Adrien’s arm.”

Bruce nodded, “I have a whole team of lawyers that you can use.” He kept his eyes fixed on the road even though all he wanted to do was stare at her. It had been ten long years since he had seen her face to face.

Bruce first met Emilie during his junior year at Gotham University. He’d been a mess before that. He could barely stay sober long enough to go to class, and his grades were a testament to that fact. Emilie Graham de Vanily came to Gotham University as part of her study abroad program, in which she would spend two semesters at an American university, then return to Paris to finish her degree. She was Bruce’s exact opposite: no-nonsense and dedicated to her studies.

The first time Bruce met Emilie, she slapped him in the face. It was the first day of the semester, and he was incredibly hungover. He only showed up to get the syllabus so he knew what the best days to skip were. Bruce sat down next to Emilie Agreste and started flirting with her, an action he had gotten very good at over his years at Gotham University. Emilie told him three times to knock it off, getting increasingly less polite until she eventually slapped him across the face and stormed out of the classroom.

Emilie must have slapped some sense back into Bruce because decided to apologize. She didn’t forgive him immediately, but after a few weeks of sitting together in class, they decided to study together. By the end of the semester, they were meeting up every weekend to hang out. Bruce stopped drinking so much, started going back to Wayne Manor on the weekends, started talking to Alfred again.

Bruce asked Emilie out at the beginning of her second semester. To Bruce’s disappointment, Emilie declined, but with a gleam in her eye that let Bruce know that there was a chance that their relationship could become more than platonic. They spent the semester together, sharing meals and inside jokes, study rooms and secrets. Bruce was certain that when he asked her out a second time, as they both stood in the airport, waiting for Emilie’s flight to Paris to board, she would say yes. Instead, Emilie pressed a kiss to his cheek and told him, “Third time’s the charm, Bruce.” Then she got on her flight and they never spoke again.

Bruce found out three months later that she was recently engaged. He was never sent a wedding invitation. He tried his best to forget her entirely, after that.

“We’re here,” Bruce broke the silence as he parked the car in front of Wayne Manor.

From the backseat, Adrien rubbed the sleep from his eyes. “Maman?” he mumbled.

Emilie got out of the car and opened up the backseat, helping Adrien to his feet. “Tu es en sécurité, mon fils,” she whispered to him, assuring her that he was safe here.

Alfred opened up the front door and welcomed Emilie and Adrien into the house, offering to escort them to their rooms. Bruce was suddenly reminded of the time difference between Paris and Gotham. 1 AM in Gotham was 7 AM in Paris - early morning. It had been at least 24 hours since Emilie and Adrien last slept.

“Are you sure we should go?” asked Emilie, yawning through her sentence.

“Of course. I’ll get everything for the lawyers taken care of by morning.”

Emilie nodded. “Thank you, Bruce.”

Emilie and Adrien left the foyer, following Alfred. Bruce made his way to his office and got to work.

Some time later, Alfred entered the room. “Miss Graham de Vanily and her son have just gone to bed.”

“Thank you, Alfred.”

“You should go too.“

Bruce shook his head. "I have too much work to do. I need this paperwork ready for my lawyers in the morning.” At the top of his desk were divorce papers for Emilie, papers for the termination of parental rights, and two restraining orders, one for Adrien and one for Emilie, both against Gabriel Agreste.

“What you need, is some sleep. You’ll be no use to Emilie and Adrien if you’re dead on your feet tomorrow morning.”

Bruce sighed, casting one last glance at the half-filled forms. “Alright.”

———-

At the breakfast table the next morning, Adrien and Dick had become fast friends.

“If you were a superhero, what would your name be?” Dick quizzed the younger boy.

“That depends on what my powers are.”

Dick wrinkled his nose in objection. “You don’t need powers to be a superhero, you just need training.”

Bruce was certain that he had said the same thing to Dick at one point. Dick heeded the words like gospel - now he spent most of his free time training to be Batman’s partner. Though Bruce had already told Dick that he wasn’t allowed to fight crime until he was thirteen, Dick seemed to think that enough skill might make up for the two-year difference.

“Okay. What would your superhero name be?” asked Adrien

“I would be called Robin, after Robin Hood.”

“I’ll be called Peregrine. Did you know that the peregrine falcon is the fastest type of bird? They can reach speeds of up to 240 miles per hour. I learned that from one of Mom’s movies.“

Bruce could recall that Emilie narrated a few nature documentaries in her rather brief film career.

Emilie walked into the kitchen, her black eye hidden by a thick layer of concealer. "Good morning, boys.” She looked a bit startled, and Bruce realized that he hadn’t told her about Dick.

“Emilie, could I talk to you in my office?”

“Sure.”

As they made their way down the hall, Emilie remarked to Bruce, “You didn’t tell me you had a son.”

“I was…. distracted, last night. I adopted Richard a few months back. I was there when his parents died and he reminded me of myself when I was his age.”

Emilie nodded. “I’m glad Adrien has someone to talk to here.”

They continued down the hall, stopping at the door to Bruce’s office.

“So what is it that you wanted to talk about?” asked Emilie as she entered his office.

Bruce held up the forms on his desk. “Divorce papers, restraining orders, termination of parental rights, and a police report for the injuries he caused. I wanted to know which papers you wanted to be filed and when. ”

“I want them all filed, as soon as possible.” Emilie’s voice was hard.

“Are you sure?” Bruce didn’t want to ask, but he felt the need to double-check.

“Bruce, I spent ten years of my life with Gabriel. I let him manipulate me into thinking that he was a good man. And he had his good days. There were days when I remembered why I fell in love with him in the first place. He was so passionate…” Emilie’s wistful voice turned cold. “But passion turned to obsession, love turned to hate, and he couldn’t stand me but he couldn’t let me go either. I was willing to give him second chances when I was his only victim, but I can’t let him get away with hurting Adrien. If I don’t leave now, if I let him get away with even one of the bruises he’s given me, then Adrien and I will never be free of him.”

Bruce nodded. “We can get to work on these after breakfast.”

“Wait.” Emilie gently grabbed his elbow. Bruce turned to face her. “Once the divorce is finalized…” Emilie paused and took a deep breath. “Remember what I said at the airport, when we were both young?”

Bruce nodded and quoted her, “You told me: ‘Third time’s the charm, Bruce.’”

Emilie gave him a small smile. “Third time’s the charm. If you still want me, ask me again.”

Bruce knew that Emilie had been through a lot these past few days. He didn’t want her to make a decision she would later regret. “Are you sure?”

“I’ve said goodbye to you one too many times, Bruce. I never want to say goodbye to you again.”

There was a deep, earnest honesty in her eyes. Bruce knew that there was no longer anything holding her back. There wasn’t anything holding him back, either. “Whatever you need, Emilie, I’ll give it to you.”

Emilie smiled, a hopeful look on her face. “Tell me I can stay.”

“Forever.”
