#en plein air

LIVE
A photo taken outside in sunny weather, showing a hand holding up a sketchbook with a watercolour painting on one of the pages. The painting is of a large railway bridge across a wide bending canal, and a train is barely visible halfway across. The sky is blue and cloudless. There are grassy banks on both sides of the canal, with many trees lining the banks, sprouting early spring leaves. The painting is framed on the left by one such tree, sticking out of the top of the frame, with a few branches reaching out across the bank towards the canal. Behind the sketchbook, a similar scene is visible.

Another nice day, another outside watercolour. It was warm and sunny, but deceptively windy which resulted in me slowly losing feeling in my hands, which was not exactly conducive to making art.

A photo taken outside, showing a hand holding up a small watercolour painting. The painting is of a large tree with many branches but without any leaves. It stands tall next to the ruin of a chapel, with only a few brick walls remaining. A couple of pieces of cloth are tied to some of the lower branches. Behind the painting the same chapel and tree is visible, surrounded by greenery and bathed in bright sunlight.

Went out and painted en plein air today because the weather was lovely. This is the ruin of the St. Walrick chapel, and the fever tree. People tie pieces of cloth to the branches in the hope it will cure their (or loved ones) diseases.

It was very nice to paint outside, but also a nightmare as an endless stream of random hikers kept walking up behind me to watch my work.

An older man told me about his farm and a large bare wall he’d like to have a cornfield painted on, and he asked whether I wanted to do it (I politely declined). Two young kids told me about their future aspirations (not to be painters, apparently) and I gave them a rock with painted mushrooms on it. The boy excitedly showed his parents, while the girl remained behind and shyly asked me if she could have the painting instead (greedy buggers).

A great blue heron at twilight on the Seekonk River! @earnestattempts and I got to watch it fish in the shallows for a good half hour while I finger painted this on my phone, the longest I’ve been around one. Looooong neck…..it only flew off when a teen started splashing around nearby looking for crabs and turtles, haha.
