WHEN INSECTS SHED THEIR EXOSKELETONS
IT’S “LIKE HAVING YOUR LUNGS RIPPED OUT”
By Erik Stokstad 29 August 2014 ||  Science/AAAS | News
Reporting on the article by Camp, Funk, and Buchwalter, “A Stressful Shortness of Breath” in Freshwater Science, Vol. 33, No. 3, September 2014.

When an insect gets too big for its exoskeleton, it sheds it. This process—known as molting—might sound matter-of-fact, but it’s not. Insects stop eating, many lie still, and they become more vulnerable to predators. Now, a study of mayfly larvae has revealed another difficulty: While molting, insects can’t breathe. Alarmingly, the respiratory impairment grows more severe with higher temperatures, suggesting that climate change and other stressors could make molting an even greater challenge.

“It’s like having your lungs ripped out,” says Joseph Bernardo, an ecologist at Texas A&M University, College Station, who was not involved in the research. Although it was fairly common knowledge among entomologists that the tracheal linings come out—and likely block the trachea in the process—the impact on respiration hadn’t been measured.

Exoskeleton Could Quell the Tremors of Parkinson’s Disease Patients at Crucial Moments

Parkinson’s disease brings on the shakes, and these tremors often get worse as the disease progresses. To prevent this symptom from interfering with patients’ daily lives, researchers in London have devised a clever arm exoskeleton that recognizes actions that require fine motor control, like lifting a cup or pointing, and turns on to suppress the tremors at those crucial moments.

It’s quite early days for this experimental device, which was discussed at the IEEE Body Sensor Network meeting earlier this month. But the researchers intend to develop their prototype to help patients with Parkinson’s, as well as people with essential tremor.

Managed to catch the last viewing of Edge of Tomorrow just before it was pulled from the cinema…..very happy I did because it was actually totally awesome.

I was expecting a bit of a “starts good but quickly goes shit” sort of affair, but was happily surprised.

The action was spot on, couldnt be better.

The ExoSkeletons themselves…..at first I thought they looked a bit too bulky but then they really grew on me!

But the best thing about the movie?
BILL FUCKING PAXTON

Cant go wrong with Bill Paxton in a military role.
