LIVE

Colourful auroras erupted unexpectedly a few years ago, with green aurora appearing near the horizon and brilliant bands of red aurora high overhead. The Moon lit the foreground of this scene, while familiar stars could be seen in the distance. The astrophotographer shot this image mosaic in the field of White Dome Geyser in Yellowstone National Park in the western USA. Sure enough, just after midnight, the geyser erupted – spraying a stream of water and vapor many meters into the air. Geyser water is heated to steam by scalding magma several kilometers below, and rises through rock cracks to the surface. About half of all known geysers occur in Yellowstone National Park.

Yellowstone National Park was the first National Park in the US. It was also the first National Park in the world and
for good reasons. With it’s thermal pools, wildlife, steam vents, mud pots, hot springs and geysers, Yellowstone is a very unique place. Rush hour in Yellowstone is caused by wildlife, there are over ten thousand thermal features and 500 of which are geysers. You feel
as if you are on a battlefield with steam vents, bubbling water and geyers shooting hot water up into the air all around you.
My brother and I played a game when we were young called “lava.” We would pretend the entire living room was filled with lava and we couldn’t touch the ground or we would die. So we would hop from one couch to another, over to the table, climb onto the chair and rock the chair backwards into a beanbag chair and so on. When the 5 of us were checking out the geyser basins that
was the first thing that popped into my head. With signs of death and warning of 200 degree water, it felt like real life “lava.” Heading east for the first time this trip > to the Badlands!

Fly Geyser, in Washoe county, Nevada. The geyser was actually created by accident when a water well was drilled in 1916. Some geothermally heated water broke into the well in the 1960s and rushed to the surface, carrying with it different minerals that built up into the colourful formation.

☀️ Happy Golden Sunday! Continuing my trend of drawing Djinn for Golden Sunday, here are Geyser and Haze from Dark Dawn; size-by-side, they share quite a similar design, don’t you think?

The little stones scattered around the piece are tiny amethyst beads—I quite like using props like these when taking photographs of my traditional work, as they add a lot of flavour to the overall composition that scans can’t capture.

And if you’re wondering, “What’s Golden Sunday?” it’s an event that occurs every once in a while to celebrate the Golden Sun franchise! There’s also a Golden Sun Discord server if you’re interested in getting to know a bit more about the series, or if you’re already a Golden Sun fan c:
