Day 4: Boppard and Bonn, Germany

We left our AirBnB in Ingelheim am Rhein and drove our way alongside the Rhine River to get to the next town of Boppard, where we planned on just a quick stop for a bite to eat and a little sight-seeing. We meandered through the streets, which were quite empty on the cloudy day. We stopped at a bratwurst stand along one of the pedestrian streets and grabbed a few currywurst sausages for the family to snack on.

We hopped back in the car and made our way to Bonn, a fairly large city of over 300,000 people. We decided to park our car in a deck and make our way to the Altstadt (Old Town) area of Bonn, where their famous cherry blossom trees were in full bloom. Sure, it was incredibly crowded, but I knew it was something we had to see (and something my mom would go crazy for). We strolled along the street, trying to get as many photos as we could. It was really a sight to behold because here we were on a narrow street with historic homes. Then there are these trees with the most beautiful pink blossoms that at times cover the entire sky above you, making it feel like you’re just shrouded in awesome floral pink happiness. After we had enough of the blossoms, we started to trek along the river and all over Bonn, exploring the various neighborhoods. We also strolled around the shops and stores in the downtown area. There were hoards of people shopping and enjoying themselves, which was nice to see. I stopped in the Haribo Candy store since I do love me some gummy bears. Haribo isn’t my *favorite* gummy bear, but I knew it was the quintessential German gummy, so I figured I’d get a sample of the sweets. Thunderstorms started to roll in, and we were on a bit of a time crunch to arrive at our AirBnB, so we made our way back towards where we parked. We did manage to grab a quick dinner at a Chinese restaurant before hopping on the road to our lodging.

This was probably my favorite place we stayed. The home is in a quaint little neighborhood south of Bonn, and the home had a cute garden and gate in the front of the home, with flowers, snails, and lots of charm. We had the entire upstairs of the building and were very comfortable with all of the beds and rooms. After getting settled, we wanted to go back to Bonn to experience the nightlife. And by that, I mean, we wanted to get some dessert. So we found a little restaurant in one of the shopping areas of Bonn and ordered apple strudels with vanilla ice cream and vanilla sauce. Holy crap, it was soooo good. Our family of four shared the two plates, and we ate it right up. (It actually was so good, it inspired me to recreate the dish at home, which I’ve done twice in the last month!)

We then made our way back over to the cherry blossoms in Altstadt because I was curious what it would look like at night. It wasn’t as vibrant with the dark sky, but it was a unique and much less crowded perspective :)
