LIVE

a friend.

There’s a girl I know

who strolls with a smile in her pocket.

All our conversations are kinda off topic,

She pours like honey over a burnt toast,

and never fucking agrees when I tell her to post.

She feels like clouds behind which a rainbow sleeps.

Among all the honesty, there’s sarcasm that peaks.

She mouths all the songs when she thinks no one sees,

and always has a red flush on her round cheeks.

There’s a girl I know

Who sighs to my jokes and still keeps it going.

She’s the one who spams Harry Styles with her drawings.

Her hair whip around when the wind is blowing,

Careful love, your diva is showing.

Yeah she’s sweet and all the sunlight

but for all that’s worth, there’s a diva inside.

She turns up her nose around stuff she dislikes,

and critiques food like she’s Ramsay’s wife.

She walks with a flair, turns with a twirl,

dances like the wind and her stories are a whirl,

She’s the quiet before the thunder and the lightning that follows.

Without her, my chats are all hollow.

When I think of school, her face flashes up in my mind

We didn’t like each other, but man, we had some crazy times.

She used to want to kill me,

which I think is understandable,

but we’ve played every middle school game imaginable.

In my party, we were the only ones who danced.

And It was high school when our paths finally branched,

That was when we stopped to think,

that all our memories are forever linked.

There’s a girl I know

who I’ve known forever.

And all I’ve got to say is

it’s a pleasure to know her.

Length: 612 Words
Rating: General Audiences (if u ignore the one (1) cuss word)
Prompt: an image of a large group of people, many with rainbow flags
Summary:Large crowds of people aren’t for everyone, even if its an event for gay people and you are a gay people.
A/N:for@choicespride. just personally speaking, as someone who gets overwhelmed in crowds. today’s prompt image of a crowd is vaguely overwhelming to me. so i wanted to write something that reflected that. also i havent ever written wes before so if he’s not in character. whoops. its a 600 word fic idc.

Simon knew he should be enjoying himself, but he was hot, and thirsty, and his binder had never felt as tight as it did now, with sweat suctioning it to his chest. Not to mention the crowds, and with crowds came noise, and noise meant overstimulation, but he didn’t dare turn off his hearing aid just in case he needed it to find the friends he had lost after his band, Kingslayer, finished their set.

It had been nice to be up on stage with his friends, since they all went their separate ways after graduation, but now that the event had lost it’s shine- at least for him, anyway- all Simon felt was tired and overwhelmed.

Tradition, in Max Warren’s very modest opinion, was a double-edged blade.

Sometimes, it had served him well; take the customs at Hearst for example. It was tradition that the star player of the football team (and most handsome, popular guy in school and son of the principal) would be privy to favors such as an uplifted social status and an exit pass that allowed him to escape the horrors of Meatloaf Mondays in the canteen.

Christmas was one tradition he usually looked forward to every year — the presents he received, the jovial atmosphere, and the freedom to throw snowballs at random losers never failed to put a smile on his face.

This year, however, was different. This year, Max learned that tradition could easily turn around and bite him in the ass. One prime example of this was the fact that he, along with other key figures selected by the District Council and subsequent volunteers, were obligated to set up for the annual Inter-School Christmas Party. (Somewhere, in a not-so-distant Prep Hangout, a dark-skinned girl in a lavender dress gets the sudden urge to squeal.)

The party was set in a gigantic pavilion which was normally reserved for District assemblies, but tonight, it would host a variety of students from Hearst, Athena, Kepler, her school, and, uh… the other schools that weren’t worth Max’s time.

Usually, you could count on the King of Hearst to host a dankass party, but usually, Max wasn’t the one setting up.

Hell, that’s what servants were for, Max thought, a small frown creasing his lips.

Butnooo, this was all part of some cheap tactic to make students from other schools come together to forge friendships in the spirit of the season or some other sentimental crap that the District Council spewed when they wanted children to do menial labor for them.

Max thought that he could be out in the snow right now; he could be playing pranks on hapless twerps or be chilling with his bros. Instead, he was here, lifting box after box of decorations, hanging up a strings of fairy lights and occasionally munching on the provisions on the buffet table. (Okay, so that part wasn’t bad per se, but the circumstances regarding this situation made it impossible for Max to fully enjoy those cute human-shaped gingerbread cookies.

…Pretend that thought never crossed his mind.)

Oddly shaped desserts aside, the menial labor wasn’t even the biggest downer of the evening.

It was the fact that Father was disappointed in him.

Two nights ago, Father had told Max that he had to do whatever the District Council required of him; he had to do whatever it took to get into their good graces and uphold the Warren reputation.

And Max couldn’t say no to Father, not after the downfall of Hearst aka the event where she exposed the school of corruption and caused a sizable portion of the student body, including Mia, to transfer. While Max did his best to redeem the school by winning various sports-related competitions, the seed of doubt had been planted. Hearst would never regain its former glorious reputation.

Although none of it was technically Max’s fault, it was hard not to feel ashamed. Father had looked down at him then, and up until now, his deep voice echoed in Max’s head, Do not disappoint me. (Not like Mia, went the unspoken part of his sentence, and Max fought the urge to grimace.)

Although Father was a thousand miles away in Milan right now, Max could still feel the weight of his expectant gaze.

He felt it weighing him down; and each box he carried seemed to hold a greater weight as if it too was disappointed in him.

_______

From her perch at the buffet table, Fisher could see Max mechanically sorting boxes of decorations. She munched on the head of a gingerbread man, a crease appearing between her brows.

All afternoon long, Max had acted strangely… aloof. Not that Fisher expected (or wanted) him to act all buddy-buddy around her, but it was unsettling to see Max Warren just standing there and not obnoxiously bugging her or something—

“Stare at him longer if you want, but I’m pretty he’s not going to turn into stone any time soon,” came a sudden voice near her ear.

Most people would shriek in terror or jump up in surprise. But then again, most people weren’t friends with Wes.

“Iwaffntstarinafhim,” Fisher tried to reply through a mouthful of gingerbread. What came out was an incoherent jumble of words and cookie crumbs. Fisher swallowed, wiped her mouth with the back of her hand and tried again. “I wasn’t staring at him.”

She really wasn’t, though. Fisher had just happened to sight him from the corner of her eye, is all.

Wes shot her a skeptical look which Fisher was determined to ignore.

Eventually Wes sighed and moved in a little closer. “Look, Fisher, if Max did anything did anything to you,” he began in an urgent tone that did nothing to hide his worry, “you know you can tell me, right?”

Fisher smiled, warmth blossoming in her chest. The feeling was oddly reminiscent of all the times she had blushed in Wes’ presence when she liked him; at the same time, it was nothing like it. Crush or no crush, his concern was touching.

“Aw, Wes!” She playfully punched his shoulder. “You’re so sweet! But really, I’m fine. Actually, Max hasn’t talked to me yet.” Or even glanced in my general direction, Fisher thought, the pleasant warmth in her chest fading away until only confusion and vexation at Max remained.

“It just doesn’t add up,” she muttered, looking around to see Max start to hang some decors on the Christmas tree in the middle of the pavilion. He moved so robotically, and his somber expression looked out of place in such a bright atmosphere.

Something plucked at Fisher’s heartstrings. It just wasn’t right to be hanging up Christmas balls with that kind of seriousness.

“Max is usually very in-your-face and annoying as hell, but now he’s just…”

Quiet. Lonely. Sad.

“…Not.” Fisher turned back to see Wes rubbing the place where she had hit him. “What do you think?”

“I think that you should do what you think is best,” Wes answered, knowing that he probably couldn’t talk her out of whatever she was planning to do next. He turned his attention to the buffet table. “If you think that involves actually talking to him or shoving gingerbread down his throat until he feels the spirit of Christmas, then by all means, go for it.”

“Wes, that’s a great idea!” Fisher started grinning. A manic light shone in her eyes.

Wes’ hand froze on its descent to the plate of gingerbread cookies. Carefully, he peered up at her. “…It is?”

“Hell yeah!” She punched her right palm with her left fist, the utter picture of determination. “I’ll use cookies and Christmas to make Max feel happy, so he won’t spoil the rest of the evening for everyone else! It’s perfect! You always have such great plans, Wes.”

“Uh,” Wes said eloquently, torn between telling her that he had been joking, taking the compliment or taking a gingerbread man. But before he could make a decision, Fisher took the platter of cookies and dashed away, humming a cheery tune.

Sighing, Wes turned to the refreshments table to sample the eggnog instead.

_______

After he finished hanging the rest of the Christmas decors on the tree, Max decided to take a break.

He pulled out a plastic chair and sat near the side of the room. The day had taken a toll on him; physically speaking, he was okay, but his emotional state was another story.

Hereally didn’t want anyone to bother him right now.

She didn’t seem to give a damn about what he wanted.

People gave her a wide berth as she approached, but even if they hadn’t parted around her like the Red Sea, Max would recognize that red hair anywhere.

Max could do nothing but stare as Fisher approached. With her head held high and a wide grin stretching across her pretty face, Fisher was practically swaggering over to Max’s direction.

Which was a bit conflicting for Max. On one hand, he was one hundred percent done right now and so not in the mood for a battle of wits. (Even though he had nothing to worry about because Max usually won those.)

On the other hand, Fisher was Fisher. She was a thorn in Hearst’s side, but in spite of everything, there was some part of Max that couldn’t help but be intrigued by her. Max was reluctant to admit it, but Fisher had beaten him (and the school) a fair number of times during sports competitions and other, less important non-sports competitions—and each time, he was determined to pay her back.

Fisher was confident, determined and stubborn to a fault. She was unpredictable and… challenging. No one provoked Max as effectively as she did. Each time she beat him, he was determined to be better. In fact, Max had been performing better than he ever had in years since he had met her.

It was strange to think how Max was so affected by a girl who created a school in an empty parking lot.

While Max was busy ruminating, Fisher had taken the opportunity to sit on the chair beside him. It was very same chair he was going to use to prop his feet up.

Max opened his mouth, prepared to tell her off with a pithy quip that was sure to leave Fisher in awe of his mental prowess.

“Want one?” Fisher thrust out a platter of (cutely) strangely-shaped gingerbread men.

Max blinked. He did not see this coming. “Yeah, su—wait, wait a minute.” He narrowed his eyes. “Why are you doing this? What do you want in return?”

“Nothing, actually.” Fisher shrugged, leisurely biting off the head off a gingerbread man. “But since you already offered, you could stop moping around and help me put the star up the Christmas tree.” She pointed towards the middle of the pavilion.

There, the ten-foot tall pine tree proudly stood, the various lights and ornaments that Max had helped put up gleamed as they hung from its evergreen branches. It was a sight to behold, but it seemed to be bereft of something very shiny and very important.

Max didn’t give a shit. Putting the star on top of the tree was a tradition he had deemed useless, ever since Father told him he couldn’t do it anymore at the age of 13.

“Fisher, I’ve got two words for you.” Max lazily held up two fingers. “You fucking wish.” Satisfied with that devastating burn, he lowered his arm and went back to slumping in his chair.

Fisher blinked. It appeared that she was stunned by his amazing math skills. For a second, it looked like she was going to retort, but then she shrugged her shoulders and went back to devouring the gingerbread men. “Yeah, I should’ve known you wouldn’t be able to do it.”

Something in her dismissive tone made Max’s hackles rise. He sneered at her. “Sweetheart, I can help you put a thousand stars on a thousand Christmas trees any day.” Just. Not. Today.

Fisher scoffed, “Oh,please. You can’t even take this cookie from my hand.”

In the midst of his self-imposed negativity and lethargy, Max could feel the heat of anger building up in his chest. No one could tell Max Warren could and couldn’t do. No one.

He got to his feet, rising to his full height. “You wanna bet?”

“Hell yeah. Loser does whatever the winner wants.” Although he towered over Fisher as she too stood up, she looked decidedly unaffected by this. In fact, she even gave him a coy grin as she held up a gingerbread man with two fingers. “So just try and take it from me, Maxie.”

In the time that they had known each other, Max had never been able to resist her. Taunts, his mind amended. He could never resist her taunts.

His arm suddenly shot out, intending to nab the cookie from Fisher’s hands in one fell swoop. Unfortunately, Max’s hand grabbed nothing but air; he had just enough time to see Fisher put the cookie in her mouth with a flourish. She even made a big show of licking the crumbs off her fingers, a sight which Max didn’t find himself opposed to.

Eyes on the prize, Warren. Max shook off his surprise and squared his shoulders. “I - I wasn’t ready! Let’s do it again.” He always played to win, even if the opposition was being distracting and even if competition was as simple as taking a cookie; it was the principle of the thing.

Grin widening, Fisher plucked another cookie from the platter she was holding and dangled it in front of Max’s face. “Go ahead and try to get it if you’re able.”

Determination hardening his features, Max reached up - only for Fisher to throw the cookie upwards and over his head. Max wasted no time. He lunged for the platter in Fisher’s hands. His fingers had barely skimmed its edges when Fisher swiftly sidestepped, moving past him. Max whirled around to see the gingerbread man falling onto the platter that Fisher had raised.

She picked up the cookie once more, tilted her head and smirked. “Ready to give up?”

Oh, it was on.

“I’ve got two words for you, sweetheart.” Max smirked back. “In your dreams!” As he spoke, he went on the offensive, advancing towards her. His strategy now was to hold Fisher down so he could gain unhindered access to the cookies. He moved in to grab her arms, but she ducked down low (damn his height!) and nimbly danced out of his grasp. He followed her as she evaded him time and time again. But Max was not discouraged; he knew it was only a matter of time before the cookie was his.

Somewhere along the line, the thrill of the challenge induced adrenaline in Max. His senses and awareness heightened - and soon enough, he detected an opportunity. He stuck his left leg out in the middle of Fisher’s attempts to elude him.

Swearing, she stumbled - but Max acted quickly and caught her by the wrists. The platter of gingerbread men fell to the ground, but the one in Fisher’s hand remained intact.

Seeing that victory was only a hair’s breadth away, Max lifted Fisher’s hand, the one with the cookie, and brought it to his mouth. He finished the cookie off with a single bite and savored the taste - it was almost as delicious as the look of surprise on Fisher’s face.

Her pretty face, which was actually even prettier when her cheeks were tinted almost as red as her hair.

Initially, Max thought that she was flushed from the physical exertion, but then Fisher didn’t even seem to be tired. She seemed shell shocked, her amber eyes wide as they stared at him.

No, not at him. She was staring at her hand which Max was still holding - and Max’s own eyes widened as he realised that, oh my god, her fingers were actually brushing against his lips -

“Uh, Fisher? Max? What are you guys doing?”

At the sound of Julian’s voice, they hurriedly sprang apart.

“It’s none of your business, loser,” Max bit out, trying to compose himself. His mouth felt weird (it felt violated, he told himself), and he felt warm all over. He blamed it all on the adrenaline rush from earlier. He glowered disdainfully at Julian, the art chick, and the rest of the twerpy motley crew.

Fisher, on the other hand, looked positively thrilled to see them. “Julian! Autumn!” She practically ran up to them and hugged them. She went ahead and embraced the rest of her friends.

Max rolled his eyes.

“So, Max, what are you doing here?” the preppy chick turned to him with a polite smile.

Max stared at her. “What does it look like I’m doing?”

“Uh, nothing?” the nerd with the mohawk endeavored to ask. He shrank under Max’s glare.

“What I mean to ask was,” the Prep said, diverting Max’s attention, “Why aren’t you with Kara? We saw her a while ago, and now we’re wondering why you weren’t with her.”

Max stared at her again.

“Kara? You know, your girlfriend?” the Nerd felt the need to pipe up. He hid behind the Prep when Max turned to look at him, and for some reason, it was more satisfying the second time around.

Ex-girlfriend.” They had broken up a little more than two weeks ago, and to be honest, Max had forgotten all about it.

“Oh.” The Prep apologised gracefully, but Max felt a little more than disgruntled when a few curious looks from the losers, were aimed his way.

(He didn’t notice them giving Fisher the same curious look, and Fisher deliberately ignoring them.)

“Whatever.” Max shrugged it off. He shoved his hands in the pockets of his letterman jacket and turned around to leave.

“And where do you think you’re going?” Fisher’s voice called out to him.

Max made a big show of turning around to face her. He even plastered a sleazy grin on his face for good measure. “What? Miss me already?”

“You fucking wish.” Fisher flashed a cheeky grin as slowly stepped forward. “I seem to remember someone losing a bet…?”

“Oh, yeah, I remember that bet,” Max rubbed his chin, pretending to think about it. “I remember kicking your ass at that bet.” He resisted the urge to fist-pump at his victory. Then, he remembered the Awkward Moment that happened exactly after his victory and resisted thinking about it further.

(Un)fortunately, Fisher didn’t seem to be thinking about that either. She was shaking her head at him, smile widening ominously. “The bet was if you could takeit out of my hands - not eat it.”

Ready to object, Max raised a finger, but then he realised.

Motherfu - she was right.

For a few moments, he just stared at her with his mouth hung open attractively. His mind searched for some counterargument, some sort of loophole that would wipe the smug smile off Fisher’s face.

He couldn’t come up with any.

“Fuck no,” he eventually said.

“Fuck yes,” Fisher said. Then, she all but dragged him to the Christmas tree. Behind him, Max could hear Julian and Co.’s jubilant cheers and even a confused, “Wait, so that was what they were doing?”

_______

Unsurprisingly, Max was resistant as Fisher pulled him along by the wrist. He was grumbling about how putting the star up on the tree was “a stupid tradition anyway the mistletoe seemed more interesting” or some such nonsense that Fisher tried to block out. Max was usually pouty and verbose when he lost, but at least he wasn’t all silent and gloomy like he was before.

Granted, he wasn’t even flashing his trademark, insufferably smug grin (a smile that Fisher didn’t think she would miss) yet, but it was a start.

No one deserved to look so sad on Christmas. Not even Max.

“All right, Maxie.” Fisher let go of his wrist and bent over to pick up the star she had hidden under the tree. “It’s showtime.”

Max crossed his arms, turned his face away and didn’t reply.

Fisher put the star down and stared up at Max with her hands on her hips. “Max?”

No response.

FIsher tried using a serious tone. “Come on, Max. We had a bet.”

No response.

Fisher tried using a teasing tone. “Maxie? Don’t tell me you’re backing now just ‘cause you’ve lost.”

No response.

Fisher took a deep breath. “Okay, I didn’t want to resort to this… but just remember that you made me do it, Max.” She moved in close to Max, looked up at him and unleashed the Puppy-dog eyes. “Help me put the star on the tree,” she said in her most convincing tone.

Max took one look at Fisher’s expectant face. Her wide, heart-melting amber eyes glimmered with hope as they stared straight into his soul.

“Nah.” Years spent living with Mia gave him immunity to that kind of look.

Fisher’s face fell. She shoved him away and stared at him as if he had grown a second head. “What is with you today?” She shook her head. “Look, I get that you’re sad and stuff, and I’m sorry about that, but Christmas is the time of the year where you can forgetyour troubles, even for just a day. It’s the season of giving and appreciating your friends and family - ”

The word made Max bristle. “Why do you even care - ”

“Because no one deserves to be sad on Christmas, Max.”

Max stayed silent for a few seconds. “If I help you put the stupid star up, will you stop preaching about the joys of Christmas?”

Fisher offered a small smile. “Maybe, if you stop talking shit about my favorite holiday.”

“Fine, fine.” Max rolled his eyes, trying not to return the smile. Same old Fisher. “What do you want me to do?”

“I need to get my legs on your shoulders,” Fisher told him confidently as she picked the star back up.

“What?”  Max did a double-take. The last person to say that to him was Kara, and that request wasn’t even for cheer practice…

Fisher gave him a look. “So I can put the star up on the tree?”

“Oh. Right.” Max felt humiliation blaze in his cheeks. He shook off any untoward thoughts and squatted down to help Fisher stand on his shoulders. Although they had a rocky start (Fisher had ‘accidentally’ kicked him in the face), they were able to put the star on top of the tree in no time. Surprisingly, they worked well as a team.

“‘Kay, I’m going down now,” Fisher suddenly announced, jerking Max out of this thoughts. She hopped off his shoulders and started to fall in a supine position.

“Whoa!” Luckily, Max had enough experience hoisting cheerleaders up and catching them. Fisher fell into his arms, and he carried her princess-style as they studied the Christmas tree together. Now that the star was shining brightly on its top, it looked grander and more beautiful than ever.

A rare sense of wonderment filled Max. The day had started off rather depressingly, but now here he was, carrying his rival in a princess-style position as they watched the string of lights on the Christmas tree change from blue to green to red.

And he didn’t even feel like dropping her.

A soft smile graced Fisher’s face as she looked on the tree with amazement. For some reason, Max found that he couldn’t look away, and the feeling of wonderment within him grew.

Finally, Fisher noticed him staring. “What is it?” she asked softly, with that same expression.

“You -” For a second, words failed him. But Max wasn’t discouraged; he cleared his throat and tried again. “You… you weigh a ton. Did you eat everything on the buffet table or something?”

Fisher decked him across the face.

_______

Hours later, the party was in full swing.

Due to Fisher’s insistence, Max had adorned a shitty Christmas-themed sweater (akin to the ones he used to own as a child; now, he was only wearing them ironically) and a round red ball on his nose. It was the only thing that covered up the evidence of Fisher’s unfair assault on him. The girl had one hell of a right hook, which Max begrudgingly admired; it still stung a bit when he pressed on his nose, even after he had put snow on it.

Surprisingly, Max was having fun, even if the most of the company wasn’t his usual crowd. Yes, he had seen a few of his schoolmates, and some of them did dance and talk with him. Some avoided him, but that was all right. Their fear was funny and necessary, and Max had plenty of people and things to entertain himself with.

He even had a few dance-offs and bets with Fisher, and it was not horrible to spend some time with her. He had assured her, of course, that this would be a one-time thing and that he was never going near the Rebel chick again.

“But other than that, I’ve got two words for you, sweetheart.” Max grinned. “Not bad. Not bad at all.”

Tradition, Max Warren found out later that night as he ended up under the mistletoe with a few someones, was not bad at all.

@hwutee (Tala) to @scout-the-prep (Lucy)

hey lucy! i really hope you liked this. if you didn’t, message me and I won’t mind rewriting it! :) happy holidays!

Carefully tying the laces on her ice skates, Scout stood up on wobbly knees and made her way to Ezra, who was waiting at the side of the skating rink. She never seemed to be good at walking with the skates on, and Ezra didn’t blame her, they were pretty hard to walk in.

“Ready?” Ezra asked, holding out his hand out. Although Scout got better and better each time they went out to skate, she was still a little clumsy.

“Ready,” Scout sighed, taking his hand in hers, and stepped hesitantly onto the ice.

They skated to the center, Scout still a little hesitant about it. Many people were skating around them, and she always seemed to get shy in new or crowded spaces, which Ezra thought was adorable. He told her so, and a bright red colored her cheeks. Ezra grinned.

“Feels nice to finally be relieved from all the exam stress,” Ezra said, as they skated around the rink, fingers intertwined.

“Tell me about it!” Scout exclaimed, “I can’t believe we’re finally done, I almost thought it would never end.” She laughed, letting go of Ezra’s hand to skate a few paces ahead of him, beginning to slowly feel confident in her skating skills.

“Now we have two weeks off, enough to do the homework Mr. Olson assigned, and give me more time with you.” Ezra winked, and she blushed again. He loved making her blush, she did it a lot, and it became a small goal of his to make her blush a minimum of five time when they went out, ten as the maximum.

“I can’t believe that ass gave us homework!” Scout rolled her eyes in annoyance, ignoring Ezra’s remark of hanging out with her more. That made him smirk, he knew that when Scout ignored his cheesy remarks, it usually meant it would stick with her for a day or two, replaying in her head.

“I know,” Ezra said, trying to make his tone match her annoyance, but he wasn’t really irked. He couldn’t really remember what their English teacher had given them as homework over the vacation, it probably consisted of a two hundred word essay on whatever they wanted. Ezra was going to choose to write about another one of his favorite musicians. “But let’s not dwell on that. This is our last day together before I head to New York,” Ezra skated closer to her again, and intertwined their fingers once more.

“I’ll miss you,” Scout said bluntly. Tomorrow morning, Ezra would be getting on a plane to New York to spend Christmas with some family there. He was hoping he’d stay long enough until the New Years’ countdown, but you couldn’t have everything in the world.

Ezra smiled and gave her a small kiss on the nose. He wasn’t sure if her face was red from the cold or because she blushed so easily. “I’ll miss you too, but I’ll be back for New Years, so we’ll have time then to spend together.”
She nodded, and then stopped in front of him, eyes gleaming with a challenge. “Up for a little skating competition?”

“Skating competition?” Ezra raised an eyebrow, but he was intrigued. “Little over a week ago, you fell face front in the sand racing Koh. You guys were running.”

“Koh cheated!”

“Why would Koh chea—” Ezra shook his head, “Actually, nevermind.”

“Sooo,” Scout drawled. “Up for it?”

He smirked, “You’re on, shortie.”

She glared at him. “How many times have I told you to stop calling me that?” About a hundred times, really, but Ezra liked the effect it had on her, and the way he was only allowed to use it, no matter how many times she told him to cut it out. When she did get annoyed at him for calling her that, she’d turn away from him, cheeks colored, and smile unconsciously. That’s why he hadn’t given the nickname up just yet.

“You secretly love it,” Ezra winked, and stood next to her. “Over to that end over there,” he pointed towards the end point of the rink, and assembled himself into a crouching position.

“On your marks, get set—” Before he had a chance to finish, Scout was already speeding off. He shook his head, laughed a little, and chased after her. Barely avoiding running into the other people, Ezra rushed through the crowd, catching up to Scout.

She hadn’t made it to the end of the rink yet, although she was near. Someone was heading towards her, and didn’t see her while they bumped into her, making Scout lose her balance and begin to teeter.

Ezra quickly dashed forward, catching Scout just before she fell. She looked up at him with wide eyes, before she smiled. “My savior,” she whispered as her eyes began to roam Ezra’s face, lingering on his lips.

He continued to stare at her, not wanting to break the moment, he began to stare at her lips too, and he slowly started leaning down…

Scout cupped his face in her hands and brought him down to her lips. Ezra smiled against her lips as he kissed back, feeling warm on his insides despite the cold they were in.

It felt like forever yet no time at all, Ezra was just starting to map out the shape of Scout’s lips with his own when someone came rushing past them, yelling, “Watch out!”

Not quick enough this time, Ezra didn’t have enough time to move Scout out of the way before the guy bumped into her, knocking her over and making her fall on the ice. “Ow,” she groaned, closing her eyes.

“Shit, are you okay?” Ezra leaned down next to Scout’s body, glaring daggers at the guy who knocked into her. He didn’t know if it was intentional or not, but Ezra knew he’d do anything to stop a couple making out in public. Being the hypocrite he was, he hated when it was done to him.

“Yeah,” Scout groaned again, and began to sit up, Ezra needing to help her. “Back just hurts a lot, can we go and sit somewhere?”

“Yeah, sure,” he recalled seeing a small cart that sold hot chocolate when they were coming in, so he’d take her there. Maybe there were cushions she could sit on to rest her back. “Come on,” one arm went under her knees, the other around her shoulders, and he stood up whilst carrying her. Scout not expecting this, squeals, then laughs lightly, her face flushed far too much for it to be the cold causing it.

Skating to the other side and the way they entered the rink, Ezra walked with wobbly legs on the spiked ends of his skates to a bench. He sets Scout down, and then sits next to her. They both untie their ice skates quietly and quickly, then Ezra stands up and begins to carry Scout again.

“Wait,” she says, standing up. “I can walk myself,” she chuckles and wraps her arm around Ezra’s.

“Doesn’t your back hurt?” Ezra unwrapped their arms and wrapped it instead around Scout’s shoulder. He pulls her closer to his body, and kisses her on the forehead gently.

“It hurts a lot, but that doesn’t mean I can’t walk.”

They were silent the rest of the way to the small shop. When they arrived and entered it, warm air immediately greeted them, toasting the two of them. A small bell chimed from atop the door, and Ezra wordlessly pointed towards a couch at the other side of the snug shop, gave Scout a soft peck on the cheek, and headed to the cashier, already knowing what she wanted.

After a handful of minutes, Ezra walks to the couch he pointed Scout to, with a tray filled with two steaming mugs of hot chocolate, with two plates of brownies. He sets them on the small coffee table in front of the love seat. Scout sits up, as she was laying down on it and smiles, thanking Ezra when he hands her her mug.

“Back feeling any better?” Ezra sat down next to Scout, he wrapped his arm around the seat and she leaned into his shoulder, taking a sip from her cup.

“Not by much, but I’ll be okay.” She smiles, “Do you mind if I lie down?”

“Nope,” Ezra says, and sets both their mugs on the table. Scout lies on her back, resting her head on Ezra’s lap. He smiled at her when she looked up, and there it was again, the red coloring of her cheeks.

He plays with her short hair, finger playing around with the soft strands as they talked about everything and nothing. “I think your hot chocolate is becoming cold chocolate.”

“I’ll get up in a second,” Scout says, evidently not going to get up anytime soon.

Ezra smiled and leaned his down to look at her better, “What about those brownies?”

Her eyes light up. “Brownies?!” She think about it for a second, “Maybe later.”

Chuckling, Ezra stroked Scout’s cheek softly, face suddenly turning serious, as he stared down at her. This close, he noticed things like the way her irises had small flecks of gold surrounding them, the little freckles she had on her nose, the natural way her lips were pouted.

He looked back into her eyes, and found her staring right back, doing the same thing to him. Again, he stared at her lips, leaning down slowly, brushing their mouths lightly against each other. Not yet kissing her, he liked to aggravate her a bit before doing so.

It worked, like it always did, because Scout then grabbed Ezra’s face in her hands once more. “You just love teasing me don’t you?” She whispered lightly, hot breath fanning Ezra’s lips.

Then she brought him down to her lips, kissing him again and again, Ezra kissing back instantly, not wanting to pull back. Their food was soon forgotten, and became cold.

Wow, I’m really impressed with these gifts! :0

**Merry Christmas!**

___________________________________________________

It was a particularly cold afternoon in late December and Milan, Payton, Julian, Autumn, Nishan and Mia were sitting in a café, drinking hot chocolate. Outside big piles of snow turned the town into a winter wonderland, but inside it was warm and cozy.

“Man, I’m glad school is over!” Julian sighed and leaned back in his chair. “You have no idea how much I needed this Christmas break.”

“Yeah, right? I can’t believe it’s almost Christmas!” Payton added enthusiastically.

“True,” Autumn nodded. “But have you noticed that our school doesn’t even have any Christmas decorations yet?”

“Yes, that’s a real shame!” Milan said. “Who is even in charge of that?”

“I would guess the janitor. But as he’s already on vacation, I’d say we are given free rein,” Nishan replied mischievously.

“Don’t we have this ginormous tree in front of our school? We should totally organize some ornaments, lights and other glittering stuff and decorate it!” Payton squeaked.

“Aaw, isn’t this cute?” a voice from the next table said and Kara moved her chair around. “Little Payton and her friends from kindergarten are planning to deck the halls and play around in the snow. Doesn’t that sound like fun?”

“Oh, don’t be a hypocrite!” Mia retorted. “I know that you and Max did exactly that on the last weekend.”

A short glimmer of insecurity flashed over Kara’s face, but she quickly regained her composure. “So what? At least my decorations have class. In fact, my front yard even looks so stylish that the local Christmas decorations committee is coming over this evening to present me with a trophy and quite a sum of money for winning their annual Christmas decorations competition.”

“Are you kidding me?! There’s no such thing as a Christmas decorations committee!” Milan exclaimed.

“You don’t believe me?” Kara asked, one eyebrow raised. “Just google it.”
And with these words she strutted out of the café.

Mia pulled out her phone and vigorously started typing. “Kara actually said the truth,” she revealed a few moments later. “There really is a Christmas decorations committee and competition. First place gets a thousand bucks.”

She was met with five disbelieving looks.

“Although she was lying about one thing,” Mia added and suddenly she started grinning like a Cheshire cat. “The committee hasn’t actually decided on the best-decorated front yards yet. The competition ends today at 6 PM. So there would still be time to enter…” She gave the others a conspiratorial look.

Julian winked. “I think I know exactly what we’re gonna do today!”

                                                     ***********

With a loud thump Mia put down the heavy brown box full of sparkling ornaments. “That’s all that’s left of my family’s Christmas decorations. My parents are usually very thorough when it comes to brightening up our house for the holidays.”

Payton cast a glance at the contents of the box and then eyed the tree up and down. “That probably won’t be enough.”

“Well then it’s a good thing that I know exactly where to get some more” Nishan said and pulled a tiny robot out of his backpack.

“And that little guy can help us how exactly?” Julian asked suspiciously.

“A few days ago I found out by sheer coincidence that our school in fact possesses quite a lot of Christmas decorations,” Nishan explained. “But instead of putting them up they store them in a small chamber in the basement. “

“Awesome,” Milan commented sarcastically. “Too bad our school is already closed and locked up for the holidays.”

“That’s where my tiny electronical friend comes in!” Nishan grinned. “It will be helping me to get in.”

“So you’re basically breaking into our school,” Autumn summed up with a disapproving look.

“O come on, Autumn!” Payton begged. “Just this once – for the Christmas spirit. Or are you afraid that Santa will put you on the Naughty List?”

“Hey!” Autumn exclaimed, pulled a huge plastic candy cane out of Mia’s Christmas box and playfully aimed it at Payton as if it was a sword. “I take Santa’s list very seriously!”

Payton threw her hands up in the air and giggled. “Okay, okay, I surrender!”

But in that moment a big, fat snowball hit her directly in the face, followed by a laughing fit of a certain quarterback.

“Julian!” she shrieked. “Biggest mistake of your life!” And with these words Payton grabbed two hands full of snow and shoved it into Julian’s back neckline. He yelped and retaliated with another snowball.

Mia seized the opportunity, screamed, “Snowball fight!” and threw a very big specimen right in Milan’s face.

Chaos broke out, so Nishan silently sneaked away and made his way to one of the less visible windows at the back of their school. Then he turned on his robot.

                                                     **********
When he returned fifteen minutes later his friends were all lying in the snow, panting but laughing. Covered in several Christmas lights and pulling a latter behind his back, Nishan collapsed next to his friends and huffed exhaustedly, “Less fighting, more decorating.”

Mia braced herself up and started putting up some Christmas balls. “Nishan is right. I want to win this competition.”

The other girls followed her lead. Milan grabbed the latter and some Christmas lights and started decorating the main entrance. With that a big hustle and bustle began.

Only Julian remained in a sitting position, a pensive look on his face. Then suddenly his eyes started to lighten up and he whispered something to Nishan. The nerd nodded enthusiastically, so Julian got up and declared, “Sorry, guys. I just had an awesome idea. See you later!”

And having said that, he and Nishan disappeared.

                                                      **********
“Are you ready?” Payton asked, excitedly holding up a big plug.

“Ready when you are!” Milan said.

And all at once their whole schoolyard was illuminated by the brightest lights and prettiest colors. Every tree was glittering with sparkling ornaments and the hangouts were decorated with candy canes, snowmen, Santas and little angels.

Autumn gasped. “Wow, that’s simply amazing!”

Their awe was rudely interrupted when a shrill voice appeared out of nowhere.

“I swear they are the ones who undermined me!” Kara squealed. “They’ve always been jealous of me. I bet they’ve hidden my decorations somewhere on their dumb little school grounds.” She was followed by a group of four older people who gave her concerned looks.

Mia raised an eyebrow. “We did what?”

“Oh, don’t act so innocent!” Kara cried out and ran around frantically, searching up and down. “Of course it was you who stole all of my Christmas decorations!”

Milan started to giggle. “Your decorations have been stolen? Well, I’d say karma’s a b-“

“I’m sorry, Miss Sinclair,” one of the older people interrupted. “But I really don’t see what we’re doing here. We really don’t have time for childish feuds.”

“Exactly,“ another continued. “No decorations means no participation for you. I’m sorry.”

“Ugh, that’s all your fault! I know it!” Kara screamed and angrily stormed off.

The girls looked at each other in confusion, but then burst into laughter.

“Okay, that was interesting,” Milan said.

“And a bit disturbing,” Payton added.

“But definitely a pleasant surprise,” Autumn finished.

“Talking about pleasant surprises,” one of the older people remarked. “You have a particularly beautifully decorated schoolyard…”

                                                          **********
Half an hour later Milan, Payton, Autumn and Mia were standing in front of their school with a trophy and a 1,000 dollars check in their hands.

Suddenly, Nishan and Julian appeared next to them, collapsing with laughter.

“Congratulations, guys.” Julian giggled. “Looks like my plan worked out flawlessly.“

Autumn’s eyes widened and she began to understand. “What did you do to Kara’s decorations?”

“Nothing really,” Nishan claimed. “We just hid them in her backyard before the arrival of the decorations committee.”

“And after their departure we put them back where they had been,” Julian added with a smug grin.

All of a sudden a desperate scream could be heard.

“I think she just noticed,” Julian stated and everyone shook with laughter.

“Merry Christmas, guys,” Milan said and smiled.

“Merry Christmas, Milan.”

I hope you like my simple present :-) I’m not much of an artist.. whether it may be digital art or hand drawn, but i hope you like it :-) took me a while to figure out photoshop HAHAHA

as for your other two requests:

1. thoughts on your fanart

i absolutely love them. I felt really pressured when you asked for fan art because i was absolutely certain i won’t be able to top yours. You’re very talented and i am thankful you share your gifts with us! Keep it up :-)

2. thoughts on PB sponsorships

I think it’s a good marketing scheme. Although i may not be that happy with the past choices for sponsorships, it’s a good thing for PB and us players. Everything is optional anyway, so we aren’t really forced to do anything we don’t want to. Sponsorships help PB improve the game further for us players, and i am grateful for that :-)

MERRY CHRISTMAS AND I HOPE YOU AREN’T TOO DISAPPOINTED WITH MY GIFT HUHU

today, the sky decides to settle into a blue hue stippled by a few wisps of clouds, and the sun beams over nishan’s high school, granting a warm welcome to the students going back to school from the weekend.

(well, it’s a warm welcome for nishan; he fails to notice the group of students beside him, groggily dragging their feet towards the building).

it’s still 30 minutes before the bell rings so nishan chooses to go to the lunch table where he eats with his friends; hopefully, he can find someone to kill time with before first period starts. he manages to spot davina sitting on their usual table. they smile as they continuously tap at their phone screen.

davina looks up to see nishan. they scoot over and pat the space beside them, allowing nishan to sit down. “hey, nishan,” they smile and show nishan their phone screen. nishan’s gaze meets a picture of two rats, one lying on top of the other. “check this out: bonobo is sleeping on top of yip. isn’t it cute?” davina’s grin is wide as they zoom in on the picture.

before nishan could respond with a fact about rats (“did you know that rats can go longer than a camel without water?”), he is interrupted by a loud thump of a bag knocking against the top of the table. nishan looks up and accidentally meets eyes with koh. his breath hitches, and koh just laughs. the fact that koh is early for once surprises nishan alone, but it’s mia’s presence as she stands right behind koh that also happens to be a shock. mia sets her bag down next to koh’s and sits down in front of davina.

it’s davina who speaks up first. “whoa,” davina’s eyes widen before they flash koh a smirk. “is that a beanie i see?”

nishan becomes confused for a few seconds before he realizes that a beanie is, in fact, adorned on koh’s head: it’s red, definitely made out of wool, and nishan admits the beanie fits xem well.  koh’s long, dark mane is now tucked inside xyr beanie, tufts of xyr hair messily sticking out from all sides; some of xyr piercings now more exposed and less subtle than before.

“it was my idea,” mia speaks up. she smiles proudly before her face contorts into one of annoyance. “except i have nothing to do with how messy it looks.”

“please,” koh rolls xyr eyes before xe gives mia a smile, “it looks just fine.“

mia huffs a ‘no’ before she stands up, faces koh, pulls koh’s beanie downwards, and pushes xyr strands of hair underneath xyr beanie. meanwhile, koh stands silently, brows furrowed and lips formed into a straight line as mia fixes xyr hair, obviously disgruntled.

when mia is done, she crosses her arms and smiles in triumph. “there you go.” she then grabs her bag and waves at davina and nishan. “i’ll be going to my locker now. see you guys.” mia nods at koh before she grabs her bag from the table and walks away.

koh shrugs before xe fiddles with xyr beanie, making it look like what it was before mia had fixed it up. xe winks at davina and nishan before xe jogs up to catch up to mia.

nishan can’t get the feeling that something’s a bit different, but he shakes it off and continues to listen to davina tell a story about their pet rats.

2.

lunch comes around, and nishan sits with his friends at their usual lunch table, a peanut butter jelly sandwich and a grape juice box in hand. sakura throws him a pack of gummy bears out of sympathy.

usually at lunch time, nishan would usually geek out with sakura over the latest game releases (sakura has been pushing him to play a game - if he can correctly recall - with skeletons, something about souls, and microsoft fonts?), reread some chapters of his chemistry textbook, or simply listen to the others talk about their own interests. however, it’s today when he decides not to listen to julian’s confusing if invigorated tirades of football, but instead to fixate his attention towards koh and mia.

koh’s got chicken curry and rice with a can of soda while mia has a small grilled cheese sandwich and a bottle of water. koh eats xyr chicken with vigor and tops it off with a huge swig of soda, fingers crushing the aluminum can. xe slams it down against the table before xe continues to devour xyr lunch. mia takes small bites of her lunch before the small sandwich is gone, her eyes are downcast and head hung.

koh eventually notices mia’s behavior and how fast she finished her lunch, and stops before xe finishes eating xyr dish. koh scoops a spoonful of chicken curry but instead of stuffing it into xyr mouth, xe brings it close to mia.

“here,” koh whispers, “your body needs more energy to get through the day.”

mia eyes the spoonful of curry before she reluctantly takes a bite. she gulps before she opens and drinks her bottle of water. “…thank you.”

koh grins before xe brings another spoonful against mia’s lips. mia hesitates before each bite, but she brightens up every time.

nishan is quite surprised how soft koh’s smile could be.

3.

after a last period of riveting grammar conventions and sentence structures, the day ends and nishan is packing up his things when he remembers to talk to mia about the social studies project they are supposed to be working together on. he stuffs his books and his folder brimming with worksheets and assignments into his backpack before he runs out of the building and towards the parking lot of the campus.

when he catches the sight of long, curly, blonde hair with tips dipped in light pink flowing along with the light breeze that blew over the town, he breathes a sigh of relief. it’s the figure of koh walking next to mia that nishan’s relief was gone as it quickly as it came, fear now settling in his chest.

“mia!” nishan calls out anyway. mia and koh halt to a stop and turn towards nishan’s direction as he approaches the two.

“i was wondering if you want to work on the social studies project now?” nishan sheepishly asks as he rubs the back of his head, “i mean, i know it’s due in a month, but we can go to the library and start researching if you want to.”

“sorry, nerd, no can do,” koh shakes xyr head. nishan takes notice of the grasp koh has on mia’s wrist. “we’ve got plans.”

mia gives an apologetic frown, “we can work on it, um, maybe the day after tomorrow? maybe next week?”

nishan is about to cut off the conversation with an ‘oh, it’s alright!’ and run away, but koh beats him to it first.

“mia, if we stay here longer, the longer we have to wait for those chicken wings.”

mia laughs and nods. “you’re right. we still have to pick up the basket and blanket, don’t we?”

it’s koh’s turn to burst into laughter before xe furrows xyr eyebrows in annoyance. “also our spot might be taken. we need to stay away from…” koh shivers, “… bugs as far away as possible.”

mia takes koh’s hand and places her hand on top of xyrs. she gives xem a soft, yet reassuring smile. “of course. let’s go then?” the two then start walking away, nishan left long forgotten in the fray. he realizes he’s free and he’s about to go turn and head back to the building when he makes the mistake of looking back and he backtracks.

it’s the first time nishan has ever seen mia strap on a motorcycle helmet and take a seat on koh’s motorcycle. it’s also the first time nishan has ever watched mia wrap her arms around koh’s waist as koh revs up the engine and zooms off away from school.

4.

it finally hits nishan the next day during lunch when mia and koh excuse themselves to go to the bathroom together. as the two continue their walk to the bathroom nishan notices them going closer and closer to each other until their hands brush, fingers close to interlocking. it’s that moment when nishan stops midway from eating his sandwich and slams his hands against the table, startling the rest of his friends.

“oh my god,” nishan murmurs, “they’re dating.”

“huh?” ezra archs an eyebrow.

“they’re dating!” nishan exclaims louder, hands flailing about in the air, “mia and koh — the motorcycle — beanies and feeding each other at lunch, and-and now holding hands!” nishan puts his head on his hands. “they have to be together!”

“… did you just notice?” wes blinks at nishan.

“h-huh?”

davina bursts into raucous laughter, fists repeatedly slamming the table. “oh my god —” they stop to catch a breath. “nishan, it was so obvious.”

nishan stares blankly at his other friends. “what.”

“nish, they’ve been dating for like,” payton puts a hand on her chin, “three months?”

“what?!”

davina giggles, “i can’t believe you.”

nishan starts looking about frantically in disbelief, “what? when? why? how? where?’

“does it matter?” autumn shrugs, “as long as they’re happy together.”

“i am happy for them and everything b-but,” nishan stutters, “how could i have not noticed? for 3 months?”

“3 months,” payton shakes her head.

“3 months,” nishan repeats. he then crosses his arms, suspiciously eyeing the rest of them. “are any of you dating each other? speak up.”

laughter rings in the air before it’s soon broken by mia and koh’s return. “what’s happening?” mia asks, puzzled.

“3 months,” wes starts snickering. nishan glares at him.

“huh?”

laughter echoes through the air once again. it’s moments like these in which nishan fails to recognize payton and davina giggling in the sidelines, davina’s hand on top of payton’s.

Don’t judge a book by its cover.

Back when I was younger I had two joke characters on the app, the first one being made was Minion #2. The nerds were originally gonna be minions, but then I decided against it and Minion #1 was named and Minion #2 became the #1 since he was ugly af. I then made a character named Nancy. She was a jock who was MtF. It was very horrible and immature of me to make her be a joke, but I was younger and stupid like that. I apologize. Anyway…I matched them up to be funny and made them go on dates. The thing is, they were perfect for each other. They became the school’s Power Couple in my eyes because they were so cute. They even became regular students to me because of it. It was just so pure.

— Come on, Michael. I’d be your number one fan!

— Tempting, but I’ll just have to find another way to impress you.
