People on this website will reblog positivity posts about Indigenous peoples and our religions and supporting our spirituality

until they find out that some of us practiced cannibalism and human sacrifice and then suddenly no one can read and everyone has places to be

I’m speaking from the perspective of an indigenous Nahua who was born and raised in southern México. I’m very familiar with the cannibalism and sacrifice practiced by my people, and know that countless other Indigenous peoples have practiced both

Colonizers boil down the incredible achievements and scientific discoveries of Mesoamerica into ~human sacrifice~ and then have the gall to lecture me about the morality of human sacrifice???

Dismissing an entire civilizations achievements because their religion included sacrifice is absolutely peak colonial mindset. You are projecting your modern western colonial morality on something you cannot, possibly comprehend and think you are being helpful and respectful and you are not

I could write a book on my ancestor’s culture of sacrifice. Please understand that the way you likely learned it in school was racist and colonialist and taught from the perspective of white people. Please understand that trying to argue about it with indigenous people or using it as a gotcha to “prove that we’re bad actually” is incredibly disrespectful and ignorant.

And while we don’t practice human sacrifice or cannibalism anymore, the history of it is incredibly sacred and important to us. I will absolutely defend my ancestor’s practice of cannibalism to the death from non native people

instead of being racist about it, maybe you can try picking up a history book written by an Indigenous person for once in your life

If you can’t respect the ~scary~ indigenous cultures, then you have 0 respect for Indigenous peoples at all

also, big take here — but ancient European cultures also practiced sacrifice (to varying extents and historical sources are scarce but yeah. somewhere these colonisers’ ancestors are laughing)

I mean, even forgetthat kind of stuff- like yes, myforbears for example had a habit of hanging people from trees as tribute to Tyr and The Gallows God, and the fabled Blood Eagle was done in tribute to the Allfather, but even if you forgetall of thatstuff, europe’s history of Human Sacrifice gets superrecent.

Like, by what definition of Human Sacrifice does drowning a woman in a lake for being a witch because Jesus said to, notqualify as an act of Human Sacrifice for The White Christ? What about torturing people to death when they won’t convert, and/or torturing them until they doconvert and thenkilling them to stop them from going back? How’s thatnot Human Sacrifice? What about when crusaders would roll up into a Jewish village and murder every man, woman, and child they could lay hands on, all to appease their deity? Why wouldn’t thatcount?

Those are rhetorical questions obviously: the answer to “which definition allows for this” is “the one where it doesn’t count when white christians do it,” of course.

Don’t forget European cannibalism! The eating of actual Egyptian mummies as medicine continued into the 17th century. Europeans were eating powdered POC remains at the exact same time they were demonizing Indigenous people for “cannibalism.”

The very word “cannibal” comes from the Caribal people, who were falsely accused of just randomly eating folks for funsies (which is literally never true of ANY culture that has practiced ritual cannibalism).

The Aztecs were demonized for making sacrifices that they genuinely believed would keep the sun god from destroying the earth (again)—and IIRC quite a few of those sacrificed had volunteered to do it, in stark contrast to the people who died as the result of the Inquisition, pogroms, witch hunts, and the like, all of whom were innocent civilians killed in the name of Christianity—and a lot of those murders were happening at the same time that conquistadores were destroying Mesoamerican cultures under the pretense that they were “uncivilized” and “barbaric” for—killing people in the name of their gods.

The hypocrisy of colonizers is staggering.

FIVE DEMONS – SYNOPSIS

Spoiler Alert!

We’ve all seen A Christmas Carol. A ghost story of Christmas. This novella by Charles Dickens was first published in London in 1843. It recounts the story of Scrooge, who is visited by the spirits of Christmas Past, Present and Yet to Come. After their visits, Scrooge is pleasantly transformed and everyone lives happily ever after… Well, this ain’t that story. Five Demons is a story of a pious cenobitic priest, who over time has become disillusioned with the whole ‘Heaven and Hell’ thing. And in this delicate time, as his faith falters, he is visited via his dreams (or nightmares) by five demons. Transported to different times of his life, the demons have been sent to increasingly corrupt his heart, mind and soul. Eventually, as the last bastions of his faith are lost, will he be finally liberated and willingly becomes a servant of Satan in Hell?

CHAPTER TWO – DUO DAEMONIUM

God formed Lilith as the first woman in the same way as he created Adam. The only difference was that in place of pure dust, he used filth. Lilith literally means ‘’the night’ and she is the spirit of fornication, salaciousness, but also fear and terror. She is said to be the demon queen of whoredom… and as such a forbidden sexual partner.

Isaiah 34:14 says… Among the howling and hissing wild creatures and demons, Lilith herself, demoness of the night, will call Eden her haunt, A place to recoup and rest between her devastating forays.

Didn’t realize just how important the themes of human sacrifice and the concept that the gods don’t listen to you (unless you perform human sacrifice) were going to be in the last 300 or so pages of A Dance with Dragons

I must emphasize, too, that these are separate motifs.

I keep encountering “If the gods are good, x will happen. But the gods are rarely good.” Or “Y prayed to the gods for x, but the gods ignored Y, as they often do.”

Meanwhile we have Victarion Greyjoy sacrificing to the Drowned God like four times and then straight up roasting seven young women alive in a boat as a sacrifice to two separate Gods at once

Okay, re: human sacrifice in A Song of Ice and Fire.

It’s pretty clear that human sacrifice is not something that the faith of R’hllor shies away from; it’s not simply a punishment inflicted on non-believers, but something that can be seen as efficacious for the party burning the unbeliever; we see this when Stannis’s men suggest burning a non-believer may appease R’hllor enough that he will grant them an easy journey to Winterfell (ADwD, 614).

The Drowned God also seems to like human sacrifices; when Theon takes over Winterfell, he allows the local representative of the Faith of the Seven to be drowned because “he had to give someone to the Drowned God, his men expected it” (ACoK, 722). It seems conquest and human sacrifice may be connected in the thoughts of the ironborn.

After the red priest Moqorro heals Victarion’s sepsis-ridden hand, the red priest shows him visions in the flames; afterwards, Victarion commands his crew to slice the throat of his maester and toss the body into the sea, so that “the winds will favor [them] all the way to Meereen” (ADwD, 824). This doesn’t seem to be the normative form of human sacrifice for either religion; which god does Victarion believe promised quick passage in exchange for the lifeblood of a maester? My first thought is the Drowned God because he commanded the body be thrown into the ocean, but he saw that it would help through the use of Moqorro’s fire divination.

Adherents of the old gods performed human sacrifice in the distant past; it’s mentioned that freedmen who were given their former masters to punish as they pleased had hung those master’s entrails in the branches of heart-trees as a form of sacrifice (ADwD, 423-424). This doesn’t seem to be common knowledge to those who don’t worship those gods - perhaps it is just a tradition that is limited to the people who lived around White Harbor.

But it seems that, so far, the only religion in Westeros that doesn’t appear to have a tradition of human sacrifice is the Faith of the Seven.

@maaruin said:  I’ve read a theory on reddit that was something like this: Magic in the world of ASOIAF is strongly linked to violence. The Faith of the Seven is an attempt to keep magic at bay by trying to limit violence as much as it can given this society (or the reverse, trying to keep violence at bay by limiting magic). So even though human sacrifices can actually be quite effective in-universe, the Faith of the Seven doesn’t practice them.

Huh. Actually, now that you mentioned it, the birth of the dragons wasaccompanied by a human sacrifice, wasn’t it? The maegi?

I’m rather fond of the Faith of the Seven (surprise! who would have guessed the Catholic likes them?), and if that theory proves true, that’s only a reason to like them more, I think; their decision to forbid what is apparently a pretty potent source of potential power on moral / ethical grounds.

It also might challenge the more cynical perspective from AFfC’s prologue where one of the characters suggests that the maesters are purposely suppressing information on magic - with the insinuation being that it is an attempt to keep maesters relevant.

As Jon Snow is becoming fond of saying, “magic is a sword without a hilt.”

Logan gets sacrificed to a god with no escape, but it looks like the god was more merciful than he thought.

——————–

A sharp throbbing pain ached throughout Logan’s body. There was a coolness that lingered on his skin as his eyes opened and a wind rushed through. It made the tall jungle trees’ leaves rustle making him wake up more. Where was he? Was this a dream? Another pang of pain shot through his body as he tried to stand up. He looked down, memories coming back to him. His legs were broken, and he was bound tight by some ropes. Birds chirped in the distance which brought him to look at his surroundings. Tall trees covered every square inch of the place except where he lay, helpless to the elements. Soon, he saw an enormous amount of food and other items scattered about where he sat, and it finally clicked. He turned around, looking up at the massive palace that was much too big for any human.

Tears flowed down Logan’s face, both from the sharp pain in his legs and from the horror that consumed him. They were real. The gods were real.He was so skeptical that he announced it to his village, and now he was stuck in this horrible terrifying mess. Another wind blew past him, making him shiver. It almost seemed like his body would go numb if it kept blowing. The cold surface he sat on didn’t help either, except for maybe soothing his broken legs. As hazy as his mind was, he was able to connect why he was with all this food and items. He was a sacrifice. Now he knew why he was kidnapped. It all made sense now… but there was still a chance that this was just an empty abandoned palace. A very well kept giant palace, but it could just be a human’s doing.

A thump rang in Logan’s ears and the ground shook under him. His heart sank as the ground continued to shake, each one progressively getting more and more violent, until there stood a giant. They towered over him and he cowered, terrified at what they would do to him. Their eyes pierced through his soul. The terror that trembled through him triumphed over the throbbing pain in his tied-up legs and body. He tried to stop shaking, do anything to calm himself down, but the giant god’s presence made him cry more.

“You poor thing!” they said, “I told them not to give me human sacrifices!”

The giant god’s hands scooped up Logan’s tiny broken form. Their fingers towered over him and their shadow casted down on him. He blinked at what they said, still bawling but now equally confused. It almost sounded like this god was concerned for him. Though, there was no way they’d miss the opportunity to hurt a skeptic like him! All of a sudden, the ropes disappeared at the snap of their large fingers. There were marks all over his body from how tight the ropes were and his body just ached. He tried to back away as far from their face as possible, but there was no strength left from his body as he tried to process everything that was happening.

“I can’t believe it! After I told them no-…”

Logan’s head started to spin at the god’s fast movements, and it was getting hard and harder to keep himself awake. Another sharp pain jolted through his body as they moved, making him scream in agony. His eyes shot open and his hands dashed to his mouth to cover it. It was obvious he was in pain, but he still didn’t want to look vulnerable, even though he knew, logically, the worst was probable.

“Oh dear! I’m sorry…” they said, looking at his broken legs, “I’m not gonna hurt you, kiddo. I promise…”

The god’s voice was soft and almost calming. It was confusing that they were so gentle with Logan, even though they could easily crush him if they wanted to. He tried to think logically through this mess. It was probable he would die at the hands of this god or be tortured. He tried to prepare and come to terms with his terrible fate, but he just couldn’t stop crying, all his bottled-up emotions flowing out all at once. His eyes met with their giant ones for a brief moment, an expression of worry and concern painting their face. It was as if they were saying sorry.

All of a sudden, a warm breath rolled over Logan as their maw opened wide. Their tongue soon caught him as he started to slide into their mouth. More tears flowed down his face, his body shaking.

“Please! I’m sorry! Don’t eat me, please! I believe now! I’m sorry…” His voice was hoarse screaming at the top of his lungs.

The god froze at his words, his tiny body lying helplessly on their tongue. Another warm breath rolled over Logan, the pain in his legs becoming a bit more bearable. Freedom was so close… If he could just climb out of their mouth, maybe they wouldn’t just see him as food. Maybe he wouldn’t look so weak. He tried to gather any strength he had in his body, but he was exhausted. He couldn’t stay awake much longer, but since he knew he’d die, perhaps that was a good thing. The light that once illuminated the mouth disappeared as they closed their mouth, sealing his fate.

The tongue licked Logan all over, coating him in saliva. Their tongue curled on his tiny weak body. It almost felt like a massage though the god seemed to focus on licking his broken legs. Perhaps they tasted better since they were broken. He didn’t care anymore what they would do to him now, his eyes starting to grow heavy. At least his body would be somewhat useful for them as food. He closed his eyes as he waited for teeth to start tearing him apart, but nothing came. It just made him sigh as he tried to fall asleep on the giant tongue he laid on. On what seemed like instinct, he hugged it as best he could, cuddling into the pink muscle. A hum rang through their mouth, making his eyes feel heavier.

Soon, Logan started to slide down into the entrance of their throat. His legs stung a bit since he went in feet first, but it was overall fine. The god was so gentle with him that he almost started to like this crazy experience. With one gulp, he entered their throat, the muscle pushing him down to their stomach. A thumping heart and their slow breath echoed all throughout the throat. Their throat embraced his tiny body every time he was squished by the soft muscles. It made him warm inside, as if he met an old friend. Now that he thought about it, he didn’t have any friends. Perhaps that was what it feels like to meet an old friend.

Logan felt his body drop into a large space, which he assumed was the god’s stomach. He crawled over the best he could to one of the stomach walls, cuddling into it. There was a sense of calm that was in him now even though he knew he wouldn’t see the light of day again. He rubbed one of his hands into the soft walls as he yawned. Another hum rang through the stomach as he cuddled more into the walls and closed his eyes. At least this seemed like a much more peaceful death than he imagined it to be.

✰✰✰✰✰

Logan’s eyes fluttered open as he felt something move. Soon, his eyes shot open, looking around, terrified and confused. He should’ve been dead by now! There was no way his body could even last a few minutes in stomach acid. A shiver ran down his spine as he hugged himself, not sure what to make of the situation. Soon, he blinked. His skin was dry.He looked around the stomach to see no liquid at all in sight! But if there was no liquid, then where was he? He was certain he was still inside the god, but where? The walls prodded at him, making him jump up, walking into another wall on the other side, still so scared. Wait a minute… His eyes widened as he looked down at his legs which were fully healed. A muffled though loud voice rang through the stomach, but he couldn’t focus on it as he dropped to the floor, in awe at his healed legs. For a while, he sat there very still and in shock at the discovery. There was more prodding at him, but he still didn’t move.

“Oh god, did I kill him? No, no, no no…”

Logan finally fell out of his trance as he heard the frantic voice boom all over.

“I’m- I’m fine!” He started to rub at the walls. There was soon pressure coming from outside, pressing where he was.

Soon, the walls closed in on Logan and he closed his eyes. His heart raced as he was pushed up into the god’s throat, into their mouth and out on to their hands. The air was freezing, and he hugged himself to keep warm. It felt like he was dropped into a snowstorm naked. He squeaked when he was wiped clean with a warm rag, though he was grateful to not be soaked in saliva. Soon, their hands curled more around him as they moved them to a giant warm compress. He smiled as he was placed on it, happy to be warm again.

“Hey, kiddo, I’m sorry I really scared you when we first met…”

Logan blinked as he now looked to the giant god.

“…but I couldn’t stand to see you in pain. I’ll do whatever you want to make up for it. My name’s Patton, by the way. Yours?”

“I’m Logan…” He was stunned at how gentle Patton was and how they simply offered to do whatever he pleased. Soon, a spark went in his head as he looked down at his legs then back up at Patton.

“You must be Patton, the god of healing…”

“Yep! It took me longer than what it usually takes for me to heal someone, but it was worth it now that I get to see you all better.”

Logan blinked. “How… How long was I in there for? And where was I? I noticed it was fairly dry.”

“Oh, you were in my storage stomach! That’s where I heal a lot of people. And you were in there for an entire week!”

“A week!?”

“Yep! An entire week, kiddo! You were beaten up pretty bad.”

Suddenly, Logan hugged himself, curling up a bit. His heart sank and he couldn’t look up at Patton anymore. A shiver ran through his whole body curling up more. Why didn’t he just listen to everyone at the village? He would’ve never ended up here, and even if Patton were acting nice, they’d get bored of him eventually. Though, he couldn’t just go back to his village! Everyone would notice him and his big mouth and beat him up again.

“Hey Logan—” Patton kneeled down to Logan’s height— “I know I’m really scary to be around with, but I promise I’ll do what it takes to protect you. I can’t stand to see anyone in pain…”

“Do you see me as a pet?” Logan asked, curling up more.

Patton’s eyes widened at the sudden question. “Of course not, kiddo… You are your own person just like me and everyone else. You might’ve been… brought here without wanting to be here, but I want you to know you’re safe here, kiddo.”

There was silence for a few more moments until Logan spoke.

“Could I stay here for a while? I doubt my village would be very happy seeing me again…” He curled up more, waiting for his body to be crushed or torn to pieces, but nothing came.

“Of course you can stay here! I’ll make sure I have a room ready for you. And I can help you find a new village to live in, of course, if you want me to help…”

A small smile painted Logan’s face as he looked at Patton. He reached out to them, soon watching them come closer. He quickly hugged their nose, crying his eyes out. Somehow, he was in the god’s favor and something told him he would be for the rest of his life.

Aztecs Constructed Tower Made Out of Hundreds of Human Skulls Discovered

Researchers in Mexico City recently discovered a new section of a macabre late 15th-century structure.

Archaeologists excavating a famed Aztec “tower of skulls” in Mexico City have uncovered a new section featuring 119 human skulls. The find brings the total number of skulls featured in the late 15th-century structure, known as Huey Tzompantli, to more than 600, reports Hollie Silverman for CNN.

The tower, first discovered five years ago by archaeologists with Mexico’s National Institute of Anthropology and History (INAH), is believed to be one of seven that once stood in the Aztec capital of Tenochtitlán. It’s located near the ruins of the Templo Mayor, a 14th- and 15th-century religious center dedicated to the war god Huitzilopochtli and the rain god Tlaloc.

Found in the eastern section of the tower, the new skulls include at least three children’s craniums. Archaeologists identified the remains based on their size and the development of their teeth. Researchers had previously thought that the skulls in the structure belonged to defeated male warriors, but recent analysis suggests that some belonged to women and children, as Reuters reported in 2017.

“Although we cannot determine how many of these individuals were warriors, perhaps some were captives destined for sacrificial ceremonies,” says archaeologist Barrera Rodríguez in an INAH statement. “We do know that they were all made sacred, that is, they were turned into gifts for the gods or even personifications of the deities themselves, for which they were dressed and treated as such.”

As J. Weston Phippen wrote for the Atlantic in 2017, the Aztecs displayed victims’ skulls in smaller racks around Tenochtitlán before transferring them to the larger Huey Tzompantli structure. Bonded together with lime, the bones were organized into a “large inner-circle that raise[d] and widen[ed] in a succession of rings.”

While the tower may seem grisly to modern eyes, INAH notes that Mesoamericans viewed the ritual sacrifice that produced it as a means of keeping the gods alive and preventing the destruction of the universe.

“This vision, incomprehensible to our belief system, makes the Huey Tzompantli a building of life rather than death,” the statement says.

Archaeologists say the tower—which measures approximately 16.4 feet in diameter—was built in three stages, likely dating to the time of the Tlatoani Ahuízotl government, between 1486 and 1502. Ahuízotl, the eighth king of the Aztecs, led the empire in conquering parts of modern-day Guatemala, as well as areas along the Gulf of Mexico. During his reign, the Aztecs’ territory reached its largest size yet, with Tenochtitlán also growing significantly. Ahuízotl built the great temple of Malinalco, added a new aqueduct to serve the city and instituted a strong bureaucracy. Accounts describe the sacrifice of as many as 20,000 prisoners of war during the dedication of the new temple in 1487, though that number is disputed.

Spanish conquistadors Hernán Cortés, Bernal Díaz del Castillo and Andrés de Tapia described the Aztecs’ skull racks in writings about their conquest of the region. As J. Francisco De Anda Corral reported for El Economista in 2017, de Tapia said the Aztecs placed tens of thousands of skulls “on a very large theater made of lime and stone, and on the steps of it were many heads of the dead stuck in the lime with the teeth facing outward.”

Per the statement, Spanish invaders and their Indigenous allies destroyed parts of the towers when they occupied Tenochtitlán in the 1500s, scattering the structures’ fragments across the area.

Researchers first discovered the macabre monument in 2015, when they were restoring a building constructed on the site of the Aztec capital, according to BBC News. The cylindrical rack of skulls is located near the Metropolitan Cathedral, which was built over the ruins of the Templo Mayor between the 16th and 19th centuries.

“At every step, the Templo Mayor continues to surprise us,” says Mexican Culture Minister Alejandra Frausto in the statement. “The Huey Tzompantli is, without a doubt, one of the most impressive archaeological finds in our country in recent years.”
