okay we all realised that when Stede took the silk and tucked it into Ed’s pocket he didn’t even know that the silk represents Ed’s heart, it just came naturally to him to handle it so gently
but it’s also a metaphor for the whole season. he doesn’t realise he has Ed’s heart in his hands, that Ed has fallen in love with him and that his actions determine what happens to his heart. he handled the silk the same way he handled Ed’s heart- being gentle and loving was just what he did naturally, but his ignorance means he didn’t recognise its significance. in the silk scene that ignorance meant he didn’t realise Ed was moving in for a kiss and in the larger arc of the season it meant that he didn’t realise Ed was in love with him and vice versa until much later.
because being in love is easy. so easy that he didn’t even know that’s what he was doing.
