VY Canis Majoris is the largest known star. This hypergiant has a diameter of up to 3 billion kilometres. The Sun has a diameter of 1,392,000 kilometres, and the Earth is just 12,700 kilometres across. If this star were to replace the sun, it could extend well past Saturn.
