My little prayer for the world is being made as I make this tiny doll corset in the colors of Ukraine’s Flag.
It is not much in the scheme of the world but it is my hopes, fears and most of all love that I imbue it as I work. It’s a small thing but it’s something I can give to the world with my heart and my mind.
My sadness, fear, and outrage seeing the brave people of Ukraine have to face their Russian aggressor has been all consuming from the first moment the attack begun a few days ago. I’ve been consumed with watching the videos and news reports. My heart is breaking seeing Ukrainian families literally being torn apart, women and children fleeing for their lives while their husbands, sons and brothers remain behind to face Russian tanks even with nothing but their own bodies. I also recognize the absolute bravery of those Russian citizens facing brutality and prison to protest Putin’s madness inside Russia itself. I worry for all my BJD friends still in Ukraine as well as friends still in Russia who are all being subjected to Putin’s whims and madness.
I grew up in the Cold War, that fear we had about the threat of nuclear annihilation was always there hanging over our heads. And now it is there again, one madman’s ego deciding it all.

I’m struggling with a feeling of helplessness about Ukraine & Russia.
I suspect you are, too.
Two years after the covid mask mandates were put into place, they are being lifted here in a few minutes. It’s a moment that many are happy to see. It’s a visible move toward life as we knew it, but the war in Ukraine ⚔️weighs heavily on all of us️.
Creative solutions & organizations have surfaced that are giving us ways to help. I’ve contributed to several efforts that will provide supplies & shelter, ️ but I feel like I’m pasting a band aid over a catastrophic condition that really needs open-heart surgery.
The daily news is filled with images of bombed out buildings, wounded people, & soldiers, & reports of deaths, including children. It paints pictures that conjures up loathing for the Russian president.
I’m seeing goodbye posts from Russian friends who fear they will soon lose the ability to stay in touch with their Instagram friends & family. It’s heartbreaking. Some of us have known each other for many years. Instagram has bridged divides & enabled us to exchange our good feelings for one another – often without words.
What needs to happen? How are you dealing with your feelings about what is going on?

An illustration for @foreignpolicymag ‘s Observation Deck that featured Lviv, Ukraine - a lovely city to which many have fled, and facing dire circumstances. It’s hard to imagine what they must be going through watching the ever increasing escalation of violence. I’ve been trying to find time to generate some work to raise money - and in some ways not feeling a rush due the fact that this will, as with Yemen, Afghanistan, and other humanitarian disasters require a long and sustained effort. But of those conflicts, this may be the the most avoidable and monstrous, built entirely on lies, nationalism, and wanton ambition - the autocrat’s playbook for mass human misery. #lviv #istandwithukraine
