Kirsten Dunst as Marie Antoinette

Marie Antoinette dir. Sofia Coppola

when you’re very smart and know what girlboss and neoliberalism means

still thinking about this absolute genius that thinks marie antoinette 2006 is a neolib girlboss movie because it doesn’t end with her being decapitated

Marie Antoinette is basically Area Woman Marries Total Stranger, Deals With Depression Via History’s Worst-Timed Shopping Addiction, Never Feels Truly At Ease, Dies

The thing about “ahistorical girlboss tyrant” is that, to me, it would imply focusing on these women being incredibly powerful and politically active, possibly to a degree that exceeds the level of power they actually had historically (thus, ahistorical), while also completely glossing over any negative aspects of how they wielded that power (tyrant) and just treating it as good and feminist because it’s awoman doing it (girlboss).

ButMarie Antoinette (2006) doesn’t show her being a politically active, powerful girlboss, it goes out of its way to show that she actually had fairly little political influence, and was often pretty dang unenthusiastic about getting politically involved even to the degree she could have (thus all the scenes of the Austrian ambassador begging her to pay attention and try harder to use her influence). If anything, I guess you could say it’s privileged and apathetic to not get more involved, and the movie should have criticized her more harshly for that, or something. (It’s debatable, but it’s an argument it would at least make sense to make.) But “ahistorical girlboss tyrant” definitely wasn’t the angle that movie went for.

The Power Of The Dog

hmmmmmmmm. guys im just gonna say it. i didnt like this movie very much. im too stupid! i had to search up the meaning afterwards cause i was literally convinced there was no story at all! there is tho. its about cowboys and it is gay… but not really?? its hinted at. but literally everything in the film is hinted at. the first half especially dragged so much and i almost gave up. benedict cumberbatch is in it. and kirsten dunst. i know its probably a good movie technically.. but dont watch this if youre looking for something thats gonna be fun to watch. i think if the ending clicked for me like it was supposed to i wouldve enjoyed it alot more 4/10 it does get a bit more interesting in the middle
