Kids showed up at school to a group of men literally cheering for them. Well done, sirs.

‘A large group of snazzily dressed men gathered outside a Connecticut public school on the first day of classes.

Nah, it wasn’t time for parent-teacher conferences. And it wasn’t an executive retreat that just happened to be walking by. This was a group gathering to cheer students on their first day of school.

“We have insurance executives. We have attorneys. We have TV producers. … We have banking executives. We have nonprofit executives, law enforcement, firefighters, chefs,“ Ward told Eyewitness 3 in Hartford. "We wanted the youth to see us as professionals in whatever capacity that’s in,” he said. “We wanted to give them something to aspire to."‘

Oh-prefaced responses to inquiry

By: John Heritage

Published by: Language in Society
Volume 27
Pages 291–334

LL Abstract:

In this article, Heritage (1998) looks at the appearance of the discourse marker “oh” in a particular context - turn-initial position in responses to questions - and demonstrates how the use of “oh” generally suggests a change of state in the speaker. He shows how this oh-prefacing may mark a previous question as problematic or indicate that a speaker is reluctant to pursue a conversational topic. After exploring a wide range of examples where oh-prefaced turns are produced, the article concludes that while “oh” generally shows its producer has undergone a cognitive “change of state,” people rely on the contextual aspects of their utterances to determine the sense of this change.

LL Summary:

Heritage begins with several examples from conversations to show how “oh” generally shows or registers that its producer has undergone a change in state of knowledge or information. He then specifies the focus of this paper: oh-prefaced turns that are produced as the second pair in a sequence, aka those that are produced in response to a question. The author continues by characterizing “oh” as indicating that a question has occasioned a marked shift of attention, meaning it was unexpected or problematic in some way. In this section, Heritage discusses an interview with Princess Margaret and excerpts between students and teachers to conclude that one function of “oh” prefaced responses is to indicate that the question to which they respond is inapposite. In the next section, he expands on inapposite inquiries by distinguishing between cases where the question indexes something “already known” by participants because of prior talk or joint understandings, and cases where questions are poorly fitted to the sequential context they are produced in. The author looks at examples of women and men and finds a pattern of assertion -> query -> oh-prefaced reassertion that is produced when matters from prior talk are questioned. Looking at reported speech, Heritage shows how some oh-prefacing indicates that a question’s answer is self-evident from the physical or cultural/individual knowledge context, or that there is some element of the social environment that makes the question problematic. After using examples of the functions of oh-prefacing in troubles-telling, questions, and problematic questions, he notes that in some contexts, the exploitation of oh-prefacing as a method of emphatic response to questions has become quite common. In the following section, the article explores cases where oh-prefacing is used to project reluctance to talk about the topic raised by an inquiry. Heritage identifies three ways that this reluctance is shown in the data: oh-prefaced responses are minimal or unelaborated in the matter of the inquiry, producers of oh-prefaced responses unilaterally shift topic immediately after the response or shortly after, or these producers withhold on-topic talk (aka remain silent). In the final section of the article, Heritage examines responses to personal state inquiries like “How are you?” Building on Jefferson’s (1980) work on troubles talk, where she proposes that this troubles talk is marked by a general tension between attending the trouble or “business as usual,” the author shows that oh-prefacing can intensify the downgrading of downgraded responses (like “oh pretty good”). Finally, Heritage concludes by restating his argument that oh-prefacing uniformly conveys the sense that the prior question has occasioned a shift in attention to the matter of the question, so that its central use is implying the inappositeness of this question.

LL Recipe Comparison:

This article reminds me of the recipe for Lemon-Asparagus Linguine with Garlicky Panko:

While Heritage identifies multiple functions of oh-prefaced responses in his article, the recipe for this dish will leave you swooning over its simple steaming ingredients! Much as we use oh-prefaced responses to suggest a range of social cues, this dish has a range of flavors - asparagus, lemon, garlic, that suggest a crisp and zesty bite. Good cooking!

“In how far we can understand the universe around us is the ultimate thought of every student of nature. The coarseness of our senses prevent us from recognizing the ulterior construction of matter, and astronomy, this grandness and most positive of Natural Sciences, can only teach us something that happens, as it were, in our immediate neighborhood; of the remoter portions of the boundless universe, with its numberless stars and suns, we know nothing. But far beyond the limit of perception of our senses the spirits still can guide us, and so we may hope that even these unknown worlds – infinitely small and great – may in a measure become known to us. Still, even if this knowledge should reach us, the searching mind will find a barrier, perhaps forever unsurpassable, to the true recognition of that which seems to be, the mere appearance of which is the only slender basis of all our philosophy.”

ABSTRACT: Examination of the U.S.-backed wars on drugs in Colombia and Mexico reveals that, apart from the hegemonic discourse about narcotics control, these wars reinforce the power of transnational corporations over resource-rich areas owned and used by indigenous  people, peasants, and the urban poor. Case studies in Mexico demonstrate that recent assassinations of activists and intimidation of communities that are organizing against large-scale mining must be understood within the framework of militarization justified in terms of an anti-narcotics discourse. Drug war politics may thus be understood as a mechanism for promoting business-friendly policies and militarizing resource-rich areas. This  politics is enshrined in the Mérida Initiative, which includes a national U.S.- style legal reform, modernization of the prison system, and the militarization and training of the  federal police and other security forces, equipment transfers, and development funding designed to encourage foreign investment and further transnationalize the national economy.

How on earth were these pictures taken?

When i was young i was convinced that they were just computer generated pictures for glossy aviation magazines. That went well, that is before i stumbled upon aviation photography. Man, it blew me when i found out these are for real. But here’s How .

Obviously, another aircraft with a camera does the shooting, which is usually referred to as the camera platform. That plane could be a retrofitted Cessna 172 or an aircraft a bit more sophisticated like an F-16 fighter jet.

image

To shoot outside and not through one of its windows, they purposely built and installed camera pods that are mounted to the belly, nose, or wings of the aircraft. These have cameras on a gimbal and gyroscopic system, with the gimbal allowing the camera to rotate unhindered, following its subject like a hawk.  This is one of Wolfe Air’s secret weapons that allow those marvelous shots to be captured, even while moving in excess of 300mph at 10,000 feet elevation.

Questions not only shape the nature of our knowledge, but deepen it as well. Isaac Asimov, prolific science-fiction author and biochemistry professor, was propelled by a curiosity to write across a variety of subjects: from astronomy to math to religion. Even today, the questions he asked continue to enrich our understanding of the human condition.
