I’m having a sketch day, so I won’t really have any new images worth uploading for a couple days. Instead, I wanted to share the older piece of mine that is my biggest inspiration for my current body of work that I am creating for Antler Gallery:

“Coragyps atratus”, 2015, Ball point pen, Ink pencils, Acrylic ink, Marker, Colored pencil, Graphite, and Gel pen on Hot-Pressed Watercolor Paper, 18 ¼ x 24in. sold.

This piece was my favorite from my first solo show. It was at the amazing, but sadly no longer around, Roq La Rue Gallery.

Enjoy!

Opening tonight at Corey Helford Gallery in LA is the group exhibition, “Sensory Overload” (Jan. 21st - Feb 18th) ! Below is my piece for the show:

“Sweet Damnation”, 2016, Ballpoint Pen, Ink Pencils, Ink Wash, Graphite, Colored Pencil and Gel Pen on Mixed Media Paper, 16 inches by 24 inches (20 inches by 28 inches framed)

For the show, “Sensory Overload”, I decided to create a piece inspired by religious, medieval, Christian imagery with exclusively “American Midwestern” flora and fauna. Titled “Sweet Damnation”, my artwork tackles the theme of sensory overload with the moth, a pine devil silkworm moth, becoming completely overwhelmed by its interaction with the snake in the artwork. The moth is receiving an enlightening kiss by Satan, represented as a divine, winged black rat snake who is entwining an american persimmon tree. The poor little pine devil is being completely overpowered by the otherworldly touch of the snake’s tongue. Missouri is my personal Garden of Eden and I wanted to represent that with this piece, as well as have a little fun with common religious imagery.

Oh man! Today is the last day that my exhibition, “Flesh Blood Bone”, will be up at Corey Helford Gallery. I cannot believe that it went by so fast. It has been an honor to show with such an amazing gallery. I met so many wonderful people at the opening on the 5th of November. I am excited to begin working towards my 2017 shows.

Here are sections for every piece I created for the show over ten months.

For one last time, my artist statement for this show:

Artist Statement:

Flesh Blood Bone:

Animals have always been an essential part of storytelling, symbolism, and spirituality. I am continuing this tradition by producing works centered around fauna to tell stories that relate to creation, mortality, the violence of nature, and my personal life.

Flesh Blood Bone is my first attempt to acknowledge, and accept, aspects of my personal history that have caused me anxiety and heartache. As in my previous work, all subjects are depicted as animals. The series of narrative works centers around my immediate family, and the interactions and emotions that occur between the four members. Recently, I felt that I could finally address these feelings on paper. I have illustrated my separation from the issues presented in Flesh Blood Bone by depicting them as otherworldly, divine animals that exist in a habitat removed from reality. The four family members, which includes myself, become abstracted versions of themselves

I plan on continuing to center my work around aspects of my life and past. I am seeking freedom from my anxiety through my artwork
