Nemesis: Origins

Loki x GreekGoddess!Reader Part 1

A/N: Hey y’all! This was actually a fic I had written a while ago back when I was in high school on another platform and for some reason never posted it here because I’m an idiot lol. I might have to do minor edits because some of this shit is cheesy. But here it is now! I hope y’all enjoy.

Summary: Imagine being Nemesis, the Greek goddess of Vengeance and Retribution, and the daughter of Hera and Zeus. Since you were a child, all you had known was the language of the sword due to your father’s ideology. But your sister Athena taught you not only the strategies of warfare but also the ways of the philosopher and the diplomat. Following the tournament and celebration of your coming into adulthood, your father sends you and your half-sister Tara on a mission to a far away planet you had never once thought you’d ever see.

Prologue,Part 2

(In this chapter y/n is currently 8 years old. The characters Tara and Aurora belong to a friend.)

“Come on y/n! Move your feet!” You heard your older sister Athena shout at you as she swung her sword down on your head, her untamed hair blowing against the wind as she moved.

You flinched at the action and brought your shield up to block her blow before clashing your sword against hers, the clinking of metal echoing across the practice arena.

Athena took the chance and connected her sandal wrapped foot with your torso, knocking you down to the sand in the process. “Close your spaces! Never give your enemies an open opportunity to wound you!"

You rolled over onto your scraped up knees and stood up only to get knocked down again by Athena’s shield. "Come on y/n. You have to try harder.”

“I am.” You groaned as you got up on your feet with a pout, your body, tunic, and the wings perched on your back covered with sand and dirt.

“There you are!” You heard a cheerful booming voice.

You whipped your head around at the voice, a grin appearing on your face to see your father Zeus walking to you with his arms outreached.

“Papa!” You giggled as you dropped your sword and shield, running into your father’s arms.

“Look at you.” Zeus chuckled at your filthy appearance as he picked you up, resting you on his hip. “I hope you’ve fought well.”

“She’s rather rough around the edges.” Athena stepped up to the two of you with her hands on her hips. “Time will make her better.“

"But you were the greatest warrior in all the realms at her age.” Zeus told Athena.

“But I am the goddess of war and wisdom father.” Athena explained to him. “Everyone is different. And y/n is still a child.”

“Well practice makes perfect. Isn’t that right y/n?” Zeus turned to you.

“Yes papa.” You muttered out before speaking up. “Papa? Can I go play?”

“Of course child.” Zeus smiled at you before setting you down on the ground.

A grin formed on your face as you ran towards your dragon, Drakon (Drah-kon), who sat on the grass. Father had gifted him to you when you were born and he was still a baby too at that time.

“Come on Drakon!” You giggled at him as you tackled him.

Drakon, who was not much bigger than you, nuzzled your face before tagging alongside you as you ran towards the palace garden, your sandals smacking against the pavement as your wings ruffled behind you against the wind.

You ran to your favorite secluded spot, opening up your satchel and taking out a book from your father’s journey to Earth. The book was called The Odyssey, and your father had told you how it was written by a man named Homer. You found it interesting to see what humans thought of your kind. You laid down on the grass with your body propped against Drakon as he huddled next to you. Opening up the leather bound book, you cleared your throat and started reading aloud, leaving all the worldly matters behind.

You had just finished the first four chapters when you heard a cry of happiness steadily coming closer that you desperately tried your best to ignore, though you grew worried when you heard the cry turn to fear. You closed your book and started to turn around when you suddenly felt something impact Drakon, knocking you onto the floor.

Drakon let out a snort of laughter at your fallen state, making you snap your head towards him, “That’s not funny Drakon.” You were upset that someone had the nerve to interrupt your reading time.

“Hey what was that for?” You yelled as you rushed around Drakon to see who it was, though Drakon didn’t seem that angry that someone hit him.

“Sorry..” You heard a quite voice mumble. To your surprise you saw a young girl, roughly the same age as you, rubbing her head from the impact. Your first impression of her was color, and not in a bad way, looking at her reminded you of what mortals call the Northern lights, or what you know of as Eos’s chariots. Her hair started of a deep black, as if you where staring at the night sky, but swirling through it were streams of red, blue, green, and most of all purple. Her skin was well tanned, as though she spent most of her time outside. She was wearing a dress that mimicked the sunrise, the top left part of her dress being the night sky, and the bottom right the rising sun. Her eyes where akin to an amethyst, though there was something in them you couldn’t place your finger on. On a closer look you saw a small line of scales encircling her head instead of a laurel.

“Sorry.” She mumbled out in a quiet voice. “I don’t mean to hit your dragon there.”

“His name is Drakon. Who are you?” You furrowed your brows at her as your small wings spread out in length in a defensive state.

You had never seen her before. Who is this creature?

The girl looked up at you and bowed into a small curtsy. “My name is Aurora, I am a child of Eos, your highness."

A child of Eos? You noticed how her face turned into an annoyed expression at the name of her mother.

"I’m y/n. I guess you already know that." You smiled politely, your wings relaxing behind your back. "Are you mad at your mom?"

"Huh?"

"You made a gross face when you said her name.” You explained to her.

You thought this girl was quite strange, and yet you were intrigued and wanted to know more about her.

“My mother has many children, so for the most part I am left alone.” She lowered her eyes as she fidgeted with her dress out of shyness.

“Well then Aurora, you won’t be alone anymore."

"I won’t?” She looked up at you, her eyes filled with curiosity.

“Nope! From now on, I will be your friend!” You gave her a toothy grin, making her giggle in response.

You watched how a frown had appeared on her face, her hand a blur as it moved past you catching a stone that had been thrown at your back.

“That isn’t nice you two.” Her eyes flickered, and for a moment you could have sworn to have seen them completely change to be similar to Drakon’s. You were shocked, confused even as you turned around to see who had thrown the stone in the first place. And to your surprise it was two of the locals, most likely the sons of merchants who had wandered away from their parents.

Drakon had let out a small growl upon seeing the two little boys were a few years older than you, thinking they were a threat.

“Drakon, don’t.” You whispered to him as you pushed him behind you with your tiny hands.

“And why should we listen to you, you are just another one of Eos’s brats.” The older of the two lashed out at Aurora.

“Yeah, and you aren’t even a real goddess, just a demi!” The younger one supported his the elder’s insult. “At least little miss wings here is an actual goddess.”

“Hey!” You called out, your eyes narrowing at the words that sputtered out of their twisted little mouths. “Why are you here?”

“Because we can you stupid girl.” The older one replied.

“Why are you yelling at her? She is a princess Mr. Stupid face.” Aurora yelled in response, puffing out her chest with clenched fists.

“At least Mother pays attention to me.” The now dubbed ‘Mr. Stupid face’ responded with.

From the corner of your eye, you caught how their words had affected her as she had let out a small wince.

“You tell her brother!” the other one cheered at the sight of Aurora’s frown.

“At least we have enough self confidence to not need to pick on someone to feel better.” Aurora spoke up out before you could say anything. You blinked in surprise at that, not expecting her to come up with such wit.

“Yeah, well, at least I have a mom that cares about me.” The boy snapped back, a smug look on his face.

You had had enough. “Oh yeah? Well if your mom really cared about you, she wouldn’t raise you to be an ill-tempered ogre-face!” You shouted at them, finally loosing your temper.

The two boys looked at you with blank expressions, the both of them surprised at such an outburst coming from someone of your status.

“You’re not even supposed to be here. You should run back home before I tell my father. Or maybe I’ll tell my uncle Hades!” You stuck up your nose, folding your arms across my chest.

An amused smirk formed on your lips as you watched the boys’ eyes widen in fear. You had secretly loved pulling that card, especially the one with your Uncle Hades. Everyone knew not to mess with the three major gods, even the one who ruled the dead themselves. You let out a giggle as the boys stumbled backwards on their feet before running away with a squeal and disappearing down the hill.

“And don’t come back you hear me!?” Aurora called out at them.

“So what’s it like having wings? Must be nice to be able to fly.” Aurora asked you as she poked her little fingers across the gold flakes that spotted your white feathers.

"Oh, I can’t fly yet. Papa said it’s because I’m still small, just like baby birds."

"Well maybe when you learn to fly, you can take me and we can go on adventures.” Aurora looked at you with hope and excitement on her face.

“Of course.” You smiled at her before sticking out your pink finger. “I promise.“

"Yay!” Aurora giggled before spreading her arms out and purposely falling on top of you.

Your child-like giggles ringed out throughout the garden as you began to talk of silly things like your favorite pastries, what sort of pranks you had once pulled, and why the clouds need to be made of candy, the two of you happy at the start of your new friendship.

When Clíodhna woke the next morning, she was very aware of the twinges in her muscles from the activities of the night before. Although Loki had been careful with her, she wasn’t used to holding a position like that for as long as she had. Her shoulders and upper arms held some residual soreness, as did her thighs. But the aches served as reminders of the delicious time she’d had, and she smiled as she began to gently stretch.

Loki sailed into the room, his eyes lighting up when he saw that she was awake. He sat down on the side of the bed and bent to kiss her forehead.

“I imagine you’re feeling sore in several places, darling.”

“A little. Nothing too bad.”

“Why don’t you roll over and I’ll see if I can work out some of that soreness? I’ll be right back.”

Clíodhna turned over onto her stomach and laid her head on her pillow. Loki returned momentarily and folded down the covers, then sat next to her.

He spoke as he uncapped a bottle. “This is a blend of lavender and rosemary oils. It should help with the aches and any inflammation you may have.”

The scent filled the air around her as he rubbed his hands together, then placed his palms on her back. Working with confident, steady strokes, he massaged the oil into her back and shoulders, then down her arms. She could feel the soreness easing as he stroked, the oils and the warm pressure of his touch doing their job. She was positive he was also using his magic to make the soothing sensations penetrate even further, the warmth sinking deeply into her and leaving behind bliss where there had before been aches.

It is symbolic of the vast unfairness of life that when a character is fortunate enough to have Loki they are almost always at some point blessed with another.

And I thank you for it!

I mean, unless you make them yourself, babe.

Words: 2600

Summary: After being gravely injured on Svartalfheim and believed dead, Loki’s body has been brought home to Asgard by the Einherjar. But one little healer with a special gift is able to bring him back, tempting him to return to the realm of the living and restoring his spirit to his body as she begins the arduous process of healing his devastating injuries.

With his heroic acts well known, Loki must now decide what his future will be and how the healer who has so intrigued him will figure into it.

“I have decided to employ you as my Minister of Diplomacy. You will liaise with ambassadors and ministers of other realms, as well as, at times, with their rulers. You will be my representative and the first point of contact in many instances.

“Halvard Jarleson will be your aide. He already has your list of duties for this week and subsequent weeks and will work with you to develop a schedule that incorporates your other responsibilities.

“Is this a satisfactory proposal?”

Loki, he of the silver tongue, was struck speechless for several long moments at Odin’s words. His father had requested a meeting with him early that morning, and Loki had taken the walk to the throne room with a mild sense of dread.

Although he had seen and spent time with Odin several times a week since his recovery, he had stopped trying to persuade his father to give him an official position. It had seemed a Sisyphean pursuit, so he had thrown himself into the garden, the Einherjar, and, of course, his relationship with Kari.

Now he was being given this surprising opportunity, and while he was gratified for the chance to prove himself and for the unexpected faith his father was showing in him, he was concerned about how the new position would affect the time and attention he could devote to his other responsibilities.

He had never had such qualms in the past, always sure that he could handle anything thrown his way and easily manage whatever was needed. Then again, Loki had never been given such an esteemed position in his father’s court.

Even before his fall from grace, Odin had not shown such trust in him. Loki’s duties had largely been confined to the ceremonial, the second son of the king, clad in his gilded armor and beaming with pride at his resplendently golden, noble big brother.

The pride had been real. He had idolized Thor as a child, and much of that reverence lingered still, only slightly diminished through the pointless rivalry that Odin had fostered between them.

The throne would never be his; he knew that now. But he didn’t want it and never truly had, only the recognition and respect that it represented.

“Loki?”

He snapped to attention, his gaze returning to his father’s, summoning a response. “Yes, Allfather. Thank you for the honor.”

He was dismissed as Odin moved on to other business.

I’m still in the firm belief that Odin is an asshole, but at least he is SLIGHTLY less asshole-ish in this chapter. And YAY for garden sex!!!

@caffiend-queen

I’d say my goal is to make Odin about 33% less of an asshole in this story. Maybe 40% less, if he’s having a particularly good day.

Dude has to evolve. “I’m sorry I’ve been such a shit dad” right before he fades away into Valhalla isn’t good enough.

He pondered the exchange as he returned to his chambers. What had changed his father’s mind?

He ran his fingers over the spines of his books, looking for something to read, but his mind was too busy thinking about what had just happened.

Suddenly his rooms felt stifling. He swiftly left them, his feet taking him outside to wander the palace grounds.

Loki soon found himself standing at the large wooden door to the medical garden, and there was a tugging in him to enter. There was a jolt of warm pleasure and affection when he entered to see Kari in a far corner, kneeling on the ground as she tended to the shrubs there.

Half a dozen other gardeners were working in the many beds around the large grounds. Loki was pleased to see all of the vegetation thriving. He noticed several new additions as he wandered through the paths, things he never would have thought to add. The garden was flourishing under Kari’s care.

She stood and turned, starting with surprise as she saw him standing right before her.

“I’m sorry, darling. I thought you would hear my approach,” he said contritely, even as he appreciated the way her cheeks flushed prettily at his sudden appearance, so near to her.

Her eyes searched his face. “How did your meeting with your father go?” she asked. He could see the hesitant optimism in her face. Kari had encouraged him that morning before he’d left her in their warm, cozy bed, but he knew that she had shared his concerns.

“It was…I don’t even know the word for it. Astonishing, I suppose. Odin has made me his Minister of Diplomacy. Interrealm relations will be largely my responsibility.”

Kari threw her arms around his neck and pressed into him, her warm body both comforting and enticing. “That’s fantastic! I’m so proud of you! And glad that the Allfather has finally seen what so many others have seen in you.”

Loki slipped his arms around her and held her, relishing the feel of her within his embrace. She seemed to have no qualms about being seen like this by the gardeners; he liked that.

“I can’t help but wonder if he might have had some assistance in coming to this decision now,” he said.

Kari pulled back to look at him, a hint of guilt on her face. “What do you mean?”

“You spoke with him about this when you ate with him, did you not?”

“I’m sorry that I interfered, Loki. I just couldn’t sit there with him and not say anything, when I know how hard you’ve been working and how much you’ve wanted to prove yourself. I promise, I didn’t tell him anything you’ve told me or that I sensed in you. I just shared my thoughts on you and, well, maybe I criticized the Asgardian culture a little for valuing brute strength so much, sometimes to the detrimental exclusion of other things.”

She bit her lip anxiously as she finished. Loki brought his hand up to rub his thumb over her mouth, making her release that plump lip so that he could brush over it lightly.

“That was bold of you, liten mus. I imagine the Allfather did not take kindly to being castigated by one of his healers, even if she is the most gifted. And the most beautiful.”

Kari was melting against him as his other hand rubbed seductive circles over her back. Her tempting lips were parting, and he wanted to taste them.

Turning from her for a moment, he addressed the other occupants of the garden. “Might I have a few words in private with Healer Kari?”

His resonant voice carried to all corners of the plot, even though he had not raised it above normal speaking level. Quickly the gardeners gathered their tools, put them into their baskets, and exited.

With a flick of his hand, Loki bolted the heavy wooden door and turned back to Kari. Dipping his head, he caught her upper lip between his and gently sucked on it. He gave her lower lip a light nibble, then slanted his mouth over hers and gave her a long, deep kiss, his tongue swiping against hers silkily.

Kari’s fingers curled against him through the fabric of his tunic as she let out a needy little moan in her throat. Grasping her by the thighs, Loki picked her up and carried her over to the nearest wall, pressing her back against it.

Her arms went around his neck, her fingers sliding into his hair and tugging at his locks, making him gasp. Her tongue slid into his mouth, Kari taking over the role of aggressor as he repeatedly scooped his hips to rub his erection against her through the gown she wore. Her legs tightened around him as she moaned with every swivel he made.

He couldn’t bear it any longer, not being inside her. Swiftly he undid the fastenings of his trousers and began to tug up her skirts.

“Out here?” she asked, her chest rising and falling in panicky breaths. But he could plainly see how excited she was at the thought.

“No one can see us at this angle - except perhaps for Huginn and Muninn, if they happen to circle overhead. I trust they’ll have enough discretion not to report this particular news to my father. But if they do…” he trailed off, tilting his head in an unconcerned nod.

Kari wriggled as he pulled up the fabric, reaching down a hand to help pull the bunched-up material out of the way.

Despite his hunger for her, Loki gripped his cock and teased her entrance with the tip of it, playing with her and making her want him that much more. Grabbing his head, she pulled his mouth to hers and nipped his lower lip sharply enough to send a stab of painful desire through him. "Stop. Toying. With. Me,” she said, her own hunger laced in her words.

With a powerful thrust upwards, Loki entered her, sighing as he felt her warm slickness close around his stiff length. Making love to Kari was like coming home. Only far superior, as home had never been a sanctuary for him in the past.

This was, not only because he found her body delightfully entrancing and because Kari responded in ways that only heightened his desire for her and sent a thrill through him, but because Kari herself had been a place of safety. Quite literally, in that she saved his life, but also in the way she had accepted him fully, giving him the benefit of the doubt before he deserved it. She had discovered all his dirty little secrets and cared for him, anyway. She gave him a reason and a purpose to hold on, then she gave him joy and hope that made him eager to wake in the mornings and grateful to have her to hold and cherish when he went to bed at night.

Sliding into her silky wetness was no less than divine.

**

Kari had been unsure how Loki would respond if he knew about her discussion with Odin. She had told him the day of her luncheon with the Allfather several days ago about how the king had summoned her, but she had not mentioned the full extent of their conversation.

Had she only been concerned about his response towards her broaching the subject with his father, she would have done so. But she would have hated for Loki to have had his hopes raised as a result, only to have it lead nowhere.

So she had kept it to herself.

Loki’s ebullience had been evident the moment she’d seen him standing in front of her in the garden, even as he had apologized for startling her. Although she had tried not to get her own hopes up, she could not help but long for the news that Odin had relented.

To find out that he had, and seemingly so wholly, had been more than she had dreamed would happen so quickly. But she knew that Loki would rise to the occasion.

His lusty response to her revelation about her talk with Odin had shocked her. She had thought that, at best, he would be appreciative that she had spoken on his behalf, or perhaps mildly grateful; at worst, he might be annoyed with her for interfering, or even angry.

Instead, he was ravishing her against the wall of the garden, his hips pumping fiercely to drive his cock into her as her back moved up and down against the surface. Thankfully he had chosen a spot where there were no plants growing vertically, or she would have been fretting about the damage they were doing. The cool, smooth stone rubbed against her through the material of her gown as he lifted her up and down with his ferocious thrusts.

Over the last several weeks since she and Loki had become intimate, he had been introducing her to various activities and positions and encouraging her exploration and experimentation. Loki was a generous, creative, enthusiastic lover, and she doubted she would ever tire of making love with him.

But here and now, he was primal and voracious, taking her as if he had an overpowering need that precluded any tenderness from seeping in. Kari didn’t mind; if anything, she was glad that Loki was not treating her as a delicate creature who could not withstand the forcefulness of his passion or match it with her own.

She raked her nails over the nape of his neck and gentled them to scratch his scalp, his cock firmly pushing into her as she did so. Kari did it again, groaning at the fierce thrust that coincided with each scratch.

Loki wrapped an arm around her, his thrusts becoming more shallow as he buried his face in her neck, inhaling as if he was a wild creature scenting his mate. He turned his mouth to her shoulder and bit into it gently, marking her as his, and she felt her heated pussy swell and pulse with her arousal.

She curled her fingers into his back, her own animalistic side emerging as she made sounds she didn’t even recognize as human. All she knew was heat, and sunshine, and Loki’s smell, and his strong arms around her and firm, sinewy body pressed to hers, and his hot, thick cock sliding deeply into her. She couldn’t help but let out all the sensations he was building within her.

His thrusts were slowing now but she could feel that he was still hard within her. He grabbed her hips, tilted the two of them so that they were connecting at a different angle, and began to drive himself into her again. Loki continued to move slowly, but the way he was rubbing against her created friction back and forth across her clitoris with every slide in and out. She would have been embarrassed at the high-pitched noises she was now making if she’d had awareness of anything other than the desperate need to come, but it was so intensely urgent that any other consideration took a very distant second.

Kari reached out for Loki, longing to feel his mouth against hers again, and was rewarded by his sensual lips fastening over hers in a deep, slow kiss. She escalated things, giving him a series of impatient, greedy kisses as she felt the delicious moment of awareness right before an orgasm, cresting the hill and wishing it could last a few seconds longer. She plunged down the other side, spasms rippling out from where her body clenched intimately around him, her arms and legs gripping him tightly as she rode out the rapturous throbbing until she was weak and drowsy in the mid-morning sunshine.

Loki lowered her carefully to the ground before turning them, sinking down to sit against the wall and pulling her onto his lap. He set his forehead against hers.

“I apologize if I got carried away, love.”

Kari took a few moments to respond, needing the time to regain her breath. “Don’t you dare apologize for that. You can get carried away with me whenever you like. I don’t want you to feel like you have to be careful with me, or to behave in a certain way. I want every part of you, Loki.”

His hand came up to cup her face tenderly, the soft expression he wore matching the gentleness of his touch. “You shall have it. But be careful what you ask for, liten mus. Some parts of me are rather ugly.”

“I’m not afraid. Some parts of me are rather ugly, too.”

His thumb stroked her cheek. “Well, certainly not this part.” He caressed down to her breast and fondled it through her bodice. “And definitely not this part, either.” Sliding his hand down and around, he cupped her bottom and squeezed. “And this is another favorite, so definitely not here.”

Giggling, she leaned in to kiss him, enjoying a few more moments of playfulness before she needed to return to her duties and allow others back into the garden.

“You” I spoke silently.

His eyes were blue, as deep as the ocean itself. His skin was of a clean alabaster tone, unmarked, not a scar or blemish in sight. The black hair that hung down to brush his shoulders gleamed in the sunlight that shone behind him, as did the armor he wore.

His body was slim and he didn’t seem to be very strong, though judging from his posture and body language, he seemed to have an air of superiority, so he seemed threatening, but not necessarily strong.

“Do I know you?” he asked me, he seemed angry about something, “No, who are you?” he seemed very familiar, “Who else? You have the prince of Asgard before you, mortal” my silence made him rephrase, “Loki, god of mischief” oh, now I see why.

“Oh, cool, where can I find the others?” he widen his eyes, looking at me weirdly, “Four floors up, I’m coming there myself” I nodded, watching him coming in. I was absolutely right, he seemed like a bad person, however, not a bad man at heart.

“What?” I was staring and he noticed, shit! “Nothing, in your file you seemed with more muscle” he scoffed, “Did it looked blonde, in the picture?” I told him no, “Disappointed?” he leaned against the opposite wall, smirking, yet I knew he was hiding some insecurity.

“Not really” he seemed…surprised? But only for a moment. When the elevator’s bell chimed before the door opened, he shifted his body and vision straight into what it seemed to be a lounge.

The place was enormous, I had never seen a place that big, well, the stadium, but I mean like an apartment that huge.

“Ah, Reindeer Games, and…who are you girl? Thor will love this, Point Break! You brother finally has a girlfriend!” That was Tony Stark in all his nature, almost literally, he was just wearing a robe and he looked like he was just ran over.

“Brother!” A blonde buff man made himself present, holding a beer in his hand and a remote control in another, “Who’s this? A friend of yours?” Contrary to Stark’s tone, Thor seemed hopeful, not taking my presence as a way to mock the person beside me.

“Mister Odinson, I presume” the blonde nodded, a smile painted in his face, “Pleasure to meet you, may you be so kind to indicate where that son of a bitch, Fury, is at this moment?” I felt Loki’s stare, I turned to look at his amused expression before returning to the blonde prince, slightly annoyed for some reason.

“You should watch that mouth miss, what would your mother say?” His fucking one-eyed face appeared and I moved away from Loki. I sprinted and made myself very tiny, then grew again to hit Fury right under his chin, knocking him down to the floor.

“Speak Nicholas” I placed my heel right up in his chest, adding pressure so he wouldn’t dare to move, “Great punch, how about we gather everyone and then I’ll tell you everything?” Negotiating with me in that state would’ve been futile, but I was in no mood of a further drama, so with a sigh and a heavy groan I stepped away and allowed Tony to help Fury get up.

“How- how did you do that?” Thor rambled, dragging all his words, “I just can” my indifference felt cold in my mouth, he was just drunk and he really didn’t asked a prying question, “I really don’t know much about it, so like I said, I just can” his smile after I softened my tone made me feel better somehow.

I spent ten minutes waiting for the Avengers to gather in the room, along with Nick, the only sound echoing in the meeting room was my foot tapping the floor.

“Is it really necessary to have them all here? Can’t we just mail them the info?” I was growing out of patience, and fast.

“You will be on a team, you must include the team, you’re not going to do this alone Y/n” he paced.

“Why not? They’re gonna slow me down, and besides, you’ll be sending them to their deaths!” Slamming the table did no good, he was annoyed, he doesn’t bend the arm when he’s like that.

“They defeated Thanos” and yet he spoke as serenely as he could, I didn’t held back on what I thought, one of the reasons I was fired quit SHIELD.

“Who you think made the Black Order, dipshit? Those warriors that fought for Thanos that almost got Maximoff and The Vision killed?” I put emphasis on Vision. Those warriors were the very elite of killers, courtesy of that monster.

“And you think you have more chance to defeat him on your own?!” His booming voice made me flinch in my seat, he then pinched his nose in annoyance and walked towards me and held my hand, “I know you have a problem with heroes, but give them a chance, you’ll be free of your burden soon enough”.

That’s what I wanted, to finally get rid of all that weight that has been making me take the wrong choices, his death will be my ticket to an endless relaxation..at last.

But…

“If you knew as well as you say, you wouldn’t force me to work with them”.

I don’t work with “heroes”.

The next thirty minutes were mainly Captain America explaining why I was there to begin with, not because it was a big story or anything, but because they wouldn’t shut up! It was a disaster.

“Okay, ENOUGH!” My voice made them turn to look at me, the only not surprised for my outburst was Fury, I think he saw it comming.

“YOU DON’T GET IT! We’re dealing with a mastermind in genetics and neuroscience, this son of a bitch can bring people form the fucking dead! Doctor Jasper Rosario is a fucking genius, he makes everyone look like a retarded baby, so to speak. He’s dangerous, vicious, he doesn’t feel empathy, and won’t stop at anything to get what he wants” I was at the verge of tears, but I managed to control myself.

“Then what does he want exactly?” Natasha asked, her tone was soft and understanding, but serious at the same time, it was oddly comforting.

“That’s what scares me the most, he has no pattern, no signs of achieving anything specific, he’s random and unpredictable, there’s no way to catch up with him. When you least expect him, he already turn the game to his favor”

“And how do you know this much about this Dr. Rosario?” Tony asked suspiciously, “Because I was on a mission when Dr. Rosario kidnapped and killed my brother and father”.

A dead silence took over, they had looks of pity and understanding, but I didn’t need that, “I want his head, there’s no place safe in the universe if he breathes, so when the moment comes I want none of you to stand in my way, or else you’ll join him”.

It wasn’t a threat, but a warning, once I have him in my range, I have no idea what I’ll do to him, or to those around me, so it’s better that they stay away from me as possible.

“Mischief, I’ve been told that you can teleport” I could see his nervousness before he changed it for a cheeky grin, “I can, want me to show you?” I blinked and he was behind me, holding my hand in his, interlacing his fingers with mine as he finished the phrase.

“I think this abilities of yours could be very useful in this particular case, would you care to join?” He hummed, thinking, or at least pretending to.

“Why should I help you, little mortal?” I could handle mortal, but not little, his attitude was infuriating, “Because you owe me, I saved your life” time for him to make up for that incident.

He looked at me rather confused, so before he could ask I answered his doubt, “The shooter in the helicopter, he was about to shoot you, if it weren’t for me, you wouldn’t be here today” and also that caused my early retirement.

“You fool, I’m a god, I can’t be injured by your weapons–” I took out my gun and shot at his hand, making a pretty wound, “WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT, YOU WHORE!” He yelled, having let out a cry of pain. When he more or less calmed down, he stared indignantly at all the blood dripping from the wound for a moment before I could answer him.

"To prove my point, you bleed, you’re as mortal as any of us. I saved your life, now it’s time to return the favor, or is it that you have no honor…your majesty?” His wound healed itself, leaving no mark, reluctantly he took my hand and squeezed it a couple times before bringing it to his lips, leaving a soft kiss on my knuckles.

“I will help you, but once he’s dead, we’re done” he looked down to my eyes, he was obviously angry, but his smirk was… distracting? I couldn’t read his emotions, so I just imitated his smirk, “Fair enough”.

LOKI

There was this, impulse, my eyes fell to her lips, I felt so compelled to close our distance and kiss her, not very sure why, but I wanted to…Needed to.

Who are you Y/n?

Next Chapter___Masterlist

Someone, anyone who heard it, would say “I’m sorry” or “My condolences”, that day nobody said shit, they just watched the crate of a boy of no less than thirteen years old go down into the dark hole to be covered by dirt.

No one cried for him, they couldn’t, my father didn’t like senseless emotions like pity or anger, that’s why he kept making me and my sister happy, “Happy as a clam” he used to say, all the fucking time. In the long run, it gets boring, emotions are something natural, something strictly linked to our most primitive instincts, the moment I opened my mouth to say something about it, it all started.

2012.

It was so weird.

That morning at 6:30, I stretched out and got out of bed to start the day, took a shower, chose a more or less simple outfit, ate an absolutely unhealthy breakfast, because I had leftover donuts from last night, and headed out.

My job was pretty simple, get behind the moldy desk, pretend to organize some documents and complete mission reports while I kept people away from hacking the system, along with three other agents. All tasks that required a steady hand to write, as Maria Hill called it the day I started to work.

Not that I didn’t enjoyed it, because I did, but my set of skills were enough to be a field agent, not some sort of paper-tidying doll with a cold, lifeless gaze, as most of the people who worked in the office had.

But that wasn’t the weird thing about that day.

To sum it up, Maria came to my desk and asked me to follow her to the roof, she looked very hurt and the smell of blood and sweat would attract attention, so I thought it would be better not to question her and follow her to the helicopter that was flying, more like hovering, over the roof.

“Get inside!” She screamed over the noise of the engines, I ran taking care of my head from the propellers and jumped into a seat, quickly fastening all possible seatbelts.

“What the hell is going on!” I caught her attention with the confused stare I shot at her.

“I’ll explain when we get there!” heard her through the headphones a man gave me and nodded in response. The city looked so pretty from up high, but you really didn’t had time to appreciate it, “Pretty weird seeing you without being glued to Fury’s leg, is he dead or something?” you yelled, earning a disapproval look from her and a soft giggle from the man next to you.

“He’s busy gathering the Avengers, we have a situation and I require stealth” Obviously I wasn’t going to fall for her lies, with a single arch of an eyebrow I made her spill the beans, “Barton was kidnapped” she confessed, “So replacement, I don’t feel at all offended” she sighed and handed you a classic yellow folder with the name ‘Loki’ written on it.

“Loki? Like the Norse god? Terrorists are so creative these days” settling the files on my lap I stared at the weapon, a scepter with a shiny rock, “No, he’s the actual god, a lunatic from outer space…literally” I gave her a confused look as I went through the little info they had about him, plus a few pictures.

“We’re holding him in a cell, but I have a hunch” she explained, “Too easy” she nodded and I knew, something was definitely up.

“This is everything on him so far, right?” I asked, there were a few side notes provided by his brother Thor, but weren’t really useful to loosen up the knot in my stomach.

‘Trickster god, now that’s reassuring. He looks like a well grown man, but if the reasons for this show are what appears here then there’re dealing with a brat that requires a good old fashioned beating’ I thought passing two fingers over my lips in a thoughtful way.

“What did you need me for again?” I questioned while handing her back the folder.

“I–” She was cut off by an explosion sound, it was deafening but thanks to the headphones it stopped midway. Part of the helicopter door to my left was destroyed and wide open.

In the sky, I saw SHIELD’s Helicarrier, along with several planes firing at the engines. Nothing came out of my mouth more than a gasp. “Y/N!” barely heard Maria scream my name. And then I saw the reason, part of my seat almost hung from the screws that held it to the helicopter, but I did not care that I was in danger of death, something in the distance caught my attention.

I was watching the man in the photos jump towards a transporter, his clothes appeared to be green adorned with gold. And he looked buff and tall. That much I could appreciate due to the distance. I noticed him how he stopped midway, a red dot appearing on his forehead.

“Motherfucker!” exclaimed a soldier next to me, aiming his gun at Loki, no second thoughts, I just unfastened my seatbelt and jumped on him, the shot bounced off the metal until it was lost in the air. When my eyes went back to the helicopter, the transporter’s gate was closed and it was taking off. My mouth fell agape.

What the fuck did I do?

“What were you thinking?! Agent Harper had Loki in his shooting range, and if not for your impertinence and insubordination he would not have escaped!” Fury yelled as he paced in his command center.

“There was something off with him, besides how dare you suppose that simple bullets would kill a god? you have to think about this more calmly” he turned around and scoffed, “We don’t have time to think about it, Loki has an army coming” images about a device started showing on the screens.

“Sir I—” he cut me off, “Y/n, for years you’ve been a remarkable agent, a loyal soldier, a good friend” he put his hand on my shoulder as he softened his tone in the end, “But you let yourself be pushed around by your own impulses, and that’s something I cannot have in war” I know exactly where he was going, “Were gonna have to let-“ before he could finish that sentence I shot him something that at least would put some extra money in my pocket, “I quit, and I demand due to years of service my right to retirement”.

The check-in agents took my chip away and handed me a box with some books and the cushion I had on my chair. It was a shitty situation, but this kind of incident had already happened in the past, despite my good performance, I did let myself go.

The idiot I had let go caused a literal war in the district I lived in, when I got to my apartment, the building was destroyed by a huge monster that crushed the roof and literally everything in front of me right after I opened the door.

But at that time? I didn’t give a fuck about it. I just turned around and let the actual agents deal with it.

BUT! Before I even realized it, it was April 2021, I was about to turn twenty-five years old in just ten days. “Agent Y/N Ora Rivers” but that motherfucker in the blue starred suit had to appear at my door, “No” I closed the door in the face of Captain America, because fuck it! “Miss Y/N, I really need to” his voice was like honey, but there was no way in hell I would go back, “NO! IT’S BEEN NINE FUCKING YEARS!!” I yelled against the door, “Miss Y/N! You’re needed back in SHIELD, there’s been a situation” I heard him try to sound convincing, “It’s about some issue with mutants, Fury told me you would know more about it”.

In that moment, that spark I had nine years ago, the adrenaline, the rage…It all came back.

“Move stipes, and radio everyone and tell them I’m in no mood for any bullshit” he tilted his cap out of curtsey and lead me to the jet just casually parked in the middle of my field, “Fucking great” I said getting in and taking one of the seats, one without a window.

“No window view?” he asked while sitting in front of me, my lack of response made him clear his throat and start with another option. “Steve Rogers, pleasure to meet you” I shook his hand, sadly I couldn’t be nicer to him, that couple of sentences regarding Fury and the whole thing happening, got me pretty on edge.

Cap never said a word after that, I think he thought I’d have to calm down before meeting with the team, I appreciated the gesture, but it wasn’t like he was very talkative per se, even after the plane dropped us off at the airport. He didn’t say much, other than ‘this way’ when he was about to make a wrong turn on the way out of the gate.

I felt very nervous about everything that was happening, on the one hand I was going to go back to work, but on the other hand, maybe my suspicions about who was causing an Avengers level threat could be right, that scared me.

Perhaps he noticed, because from one second to the next, the captain’s hand moved to my shoulder, his thumb lightly stroking the material of my shirt.

I smiled at him; he wasn’t going to get more than that.

“I have to fix a couple of things on the second floor, go straight to the last one, I’ll catch up with you in a bit” she pressed the button that said 'penthouse’ and got off at the second floor, just like he said.

I went up without any problem, I even thought that I had a decent meeting with my new companions and that stupid Fury, until the damn elevator door opened.

Needed

Being the replacement for Pepper Pots as Tony’s secretary wasn’t easy, you had to follow Tony Stark wherever he went, or wherever he was called to go. That included being around lots of people for long periods of time, standing up and smiling, putting up with comments about either your boss or your body and your usefulness, the sluts who couldn’t keep their claws off your married boss, the assholes who swear that by attacking your self-esteem you will follow them to their luxury car and then never see them again.

You hated those events, they bring out the worst in you, and to top it off after all that fiasco you had to go back to the office to finish paperwork.

You felt it rising, an uncomfortably warm sensation in your chest that hugged your lungs tight; to try to ease it you breathe deeply a few times, but it still felt warm, your sore neck was giving you a hard time, the heels you were wearing were making your spine hurt a lot.

“Hey Y/n! How about you take the night? My wife can handle it from here!” you forced out a smile and nodded, loosing yourself in the crowd as you were looking for the exit.

Where was the exit again?

The music in the background was muffled, a loud high pitched ring made you cover your ears, but the noise came from the inside of you. Your stomach lurched from disorientation, yet you seemed calm, you were finally able to breathe when you got into your car and drove home.

You took off your heels and threw them to who knows where, sighing and growling, the bright light of the kitchen hurt your eyes, “Welcome darling, are you hungry?” your boyfriend appeared rose up from the couch, leaving his book aside to greet you, yet his face shifted when he looked at you, “My love, are you okay? You look pale” maybe you wanted to cry? no, that damned light! the awful party, you were just feeling too much. “I really just want to lay down baby, I just…I” your brain got a bit tied, as it couldn’t think of another thing than just getting into bed.

“Words my love, you can do it…may I?” Loki knew what kind of state you were in, so he would ask for your consent before touching you, even though every time you just nodded and melted into his soft touch, which brought a bit of clearness into what you needed in the moment.

“I’m just not up for anything, alright? I’m tired” that wasn’t fair, you were being mean to him, over something that he has no fault in, “I’m so sorry my love, I-” he cut you off with a soft peck on the lips, “Sounds like you had a hard day, do you want me to stay with you? maybe eat something? or do you wish to be alone?” he softly spoke.

It was wonderful that he gave you options, all to allow your brain to rest, “I want to be alone, can I still call you?” he petted your hair and kissed your forehead, “Whenever you want my love, go rest” one last kiss on your forehead made your muscle memory work, otherwise walking would have been a real hazard.

At some point at work you decided you just wouldn’t go through another episode, so you called your therapist and she told you something you didn’t expected. She recommended a medical dose of cannabis, she said it came with more pro’s than con’s with your situation, but that in simpler words, it would work as a temporary distressing or coping mechanism, since your usual pills weren’t making you feel any better.

The dose she prescribed was “safe”, she said that it would be controlled and measured so that there would be no risk of your body becoming addicted to the drug. She also asked that your boyfriend meet her to explain him the procedure and how he could help you improve your situation.

Loki loves feeling useful when it comes to you, so it wasn’t really a surprise when he told you he was 100% ready to help you, he looked like a dark fur golden retriever.

You were at a very non sketchy place to get it, somehow you expected it to be a dark alley or the back of a gas station, but since it was a rescripted dose, you could safely ask for it at a normal drugstore.

You weren’t supposed to consume it right away, your therapist advised you to make a tea out of it, or bake it, but neither of the servings had to contain a high dose of cannabis.

You got your solution, but you were scared, of the effects, the way your body could react to it, all of it kept you away from the drug, being reluctant to even think about consume it, it being still a substance that could harm you, it had an important weight in a moral sense, but then again it had the purpose of making you better. So there you hanged on a mental thread.

Until one day, same as any day at work, you came back with your heels in hand, drenched in your own sweat and the rain that poured like a wild ocean. You ran away from a party that Tony hosted to celebrate a victorious mission, it ended up with you locked up in a public bathroom in a gas station, your eyes shut, the coldness of the tiles somehow soothed your headache.

You felt inclined to move your body towards the WC, your stomach and your head managed to send your senses to hell, the command was to vomit, but you had nothing inside you. It hurt so much to try to force all the pain out by hurling, and failing miserably, so you ended up falling against the wall giving up, exhausted and in pain.

“Loki, please my love…I need you” you hugged your body close, hoping he would hear your broken sobs, and luckily he did, he appeared by your side, held you close to his chest and after passing his arm under your legs he scooped you up. “I think it’s time my love, should I brew the tea for you?” you nodded, massaging his silky black curls as he teleported you back to your shared bedroom.

“Would you like me to dress you, or you can manage?” you groaned, he lowered your body to the bed, “I don’t know Loki, it hurts” you did felt better knowing that you were in familiar grounds, his fresh scent sent the dizziness away, his soft caresses…but it still bothered you, why if you were so well, why you succumbed to pain so easily? It made you furious.

“My love, I’ll do it for you, I feel your frustration, just concentrate in my voice and my hands, please?”

“JUST!…” you took a deep breath, his touch was lovely, but in your state it was just too much. Felling him, then your head, then the light of the room, how everything just started to spin around. Your body, you couldn’t figure out where that tingling, like an electric sensation, was coming from, it hurt and infuriated you, not knowing.

“Please my love” you had taken his hands off of your body with such urgency, he understood that he wasn’t helping. He didn’t let you alone for much time, he came back with your favorite mug filled with the funny smelly tea.

“I diluted a little portion in this tea, but it will take longer to be effective because your system will process it, but read that if you smoke it, it will take maybe ten minutes” in that desperate moment, you pushed away the cigar and took the cup. It’s that you needed the pain to go away, but ruining your lungs was out of the question.

You drank the mug’s content, a couple drops fell from the corner of your mouth but Loki was quick to wipe them off, earning a warm smile from you.

“Will you wait with me?” He nodded, sitting beside you with his back against the bed, lowering just enough so your head could flop on his shoulder.

Around ten minutes went away, and you woke up from Loki’s lap with a smile on your face, feeling giddy, light. You brought your fingers up to Loki’s forearm, drawing a line back and forward to his wrists.

“Hello~” you giggled, watching a smile forming on his face, “Hello gorgeous, how are you feeling?” The hems of his fingers barely touched your cheek, the electric sensation left, instead you leaned against him and encouraged to caress you with his full hand.

“Cloudy, floaty, lovely” he watched you breathe, it was relaxed, deep, and you really seemed to enjoy the coldness of the air filling your lungs. And he just loved to see you better, or at least not in pain.

“Take it easy love, there’s nowhere to go, nothing to do, it’s just you and me. Besides, when you were sleeping I called Stark, you have the rest of the week off” he lowered his head to leave little kisses on your face, “You’re mine, only mine for a whole week” you laughed, as you used to do before all the disaster, “I’m yours every day, Loki, always” you love to see him smile, you imagined a little tail wiggling from side to side every time he was happy.

A rumble on your stomach made him look at you funny, he corrected your posture from his lap to cradle you in his arms, so your face would be merely inches from his, “Hungry, love? What do you crave? Sweet, salty, sweet and sour?” so many options to choose from, and yet you went with “Cheetos with Nutella”, his eyes widen in surprise, he thought it was a joke, but it wasn’t.

He left you watching cartoons while he teleported to the market, he didn’t took long but you didn’t even notice, you were fascinated with the colors and the quietness in your brain. It was just you, in cloud 9.

He handed you a portion of Cheetos on a bowl and the jar of Nutella. He assured you that it was only yours so you didn’t need to worry about leaving any for him, that sparkle in your eyes will never leave his mind.

He passed his hand behind your back, with his strength it was easy to push you forward gently for him to accommodate you between his legs, with his back resting on the cushions and yours on his chest. Your head and your body reclined in the search of his warmth, his affection, he would die to see you that happy without needing to be drugged, however, his beloved mortal did not work like that, and it was fine, he liked feeling needed.

“Loki?” he saw your eyes perk up, as well as your drowsy smile and silly giggles that made him chuckle, “Yes my love?” your hand that didn’t had Cheeto dust went up to caress his hair, “Thank you, for being in my life” you finished giving him a heartfelt smile before paying attention to the drawing on screen, you head nuzzling against his shoulder.

“No darling” he pressed you more against him, “Thank you” after whispering, he placed one kiss to your cheek, inhaled on your scent and closed his eyes, feeling your content and simple joy as you munch on your strange delight, “Someday” he thought to himself.

Someday he was going to take you away, from your pain and Earth. To a shack he was building on a distant planet while you were working. It was filled with flowers and protected with its own orbit, shielded with a spell and a giant snake that would prevent strangers to taint his gift. Someday, he repeated to himself like a prayer while eyeing the lowest drawer under the TV, where he kept the ring.

You’d gotten in late last night. Too late. Maybe too early. The exact time was inconsequential. It was too late to be night but too early to be morning, and you had fallen, exhausted, face first into bed. Normally, your whirring mind would keep you up for hours, but this time, it shut off completely, and you slept hard. It was the kind of blackout sleep where your body and mind just simply refused to continue; they had nothing left to give you and demanded that you rest.

Chapter 73

Loki felt like his eyes had just closed as the morning light started streaming in from the balcony doors beside their bed. Odin’s funeral and honorary banquet the previous day had been more taxing than he had expected and drained all of the energy he had rebuilt on their relaxing day as a family. As he slowly sat up to sit on the edge of the bed, he leaned over and held his face in his hands for a moment to gather the strength to prepare for the day. In just a few short hours, Odin’s final degrees as the King of Asgard would be read before the royal family and the council. He wasn’t sure what it was exactly, but the mere thought of it felt like a rock in his stomach, weighing him down and keeping him sitting down exactly where he was. His thoughts seemed to bounce between so many directions and emotions right now that it was overwhelming.

Just as he was about to force himself to stand, he felt the touch of her hand on his lower back. His resolve to begin the day quickly dissipated and he instead turned to look at his wife. The sight before him helped calm the storm that was building inside. She looked just as exhausted as he felt, and it was obvious that she hadn’t slept any better than he had. The two of them had returned to their chambers late into the night after the feast in Odin’s honor. Neither of them said a word as they had prepared for bed, yet it was a comfortable silence between them after the emotional toll of the day. When he did finally succumb to sleep, it had been with his Jessica wrapped tightly in his arms.

“What time is the council meeting?”

Loki sighed and turned his body around to face her, taking her hand and placing it in his lap between both of his.

“The meeting is set to begin just after breakfast, but you and mother aren’t expected to be present until later. Most of the morning will be spend covering current affairs and catching Thor and I up on matters that have taken place since Odin’s passing and the things he hadn’t tended to since the last meeting a few weeks ago. Once those items are handled, I’ll send one of the guards to go find the two of you.”

Jessica simply nodded her head and moved to lie on his pillow to be closer to him. With her now curled up against his leg with her hand on his knee, Loki reached down and loving ran his fingers through her hair as his mind drifted off again. After a few quiet moments together, her voice brought him back into the moment.

“Babe.”

The name snapped him from his thoughts, and he looked down at her once more, giving her his attention again.

“Talk to me, Mischief. Tell me where your head’s at with all of this.”

He sighed and resumed running his fingers through her hair as he took a moment to gather his thoughts.

“I’m not sure to be truthful. Everywhere and no where at the same time, if that makes any sense. Between his funeral yesterday and the feast last night, it all feels so… final. I mean, I always knew this day would come and I knew what to expect, but there’s still something about it that I can’t put my finger on.”

“Does it have anything to do with the final decree and Odin’s successor?”

Loki reached down and pulled his wife over into his lap so he could wrap his arms around her and hold her closer to him. He couldn’t help but let a small smile spread across his lips as he glanced down at her resting her head on his legs instead of the pillow and softly caressed her cheek.

“Possibly. I’m sure he will be naming Thor though and then I’ll have to help my brother with the diplomatic side of the throne. That part of ruling was always a bore to him. He was always finding some excuse to miss the council meetings to train instead or relax somewhere with his friends. My training under Odin during my last stay in Asgard was a great refresher after being away for so many years.”

Jessica slowly nodded as he spoke, but he could see the distance look in her eyes as her mind was occupied with something else.

“And if he doesn’t name Thor as the next king?…”

His eyebrows furrowed together as he deciphered what she was truly asking him.

“Me? Heavens no darling, Odin only ever planned to make Thor a king. The rightful heir.”

She sat up to face him directly, crossing her legs in front of her as she took his hands into hers. He could see all of the emotions flick through her eyes as they darted back and forth as if she was looking at all possibilities at the same time.

“What about everything he said when we were here last time? I know you never did share too much of it with me, but it really seemed like he was preparing you for something big, Lohk. There is still a possibility that you could be named today. If you are, then what? What will you do?”

Based on the serious expression on his wife’s face, he knew that he needed to have this discussion with her. Right here. In this moment. It couldn’t be put off any longer. With a sigh, he traced his thumb over the back of her hand that was wrapped up in his.

“I honestly don’t know what I would do, love. I suppose that’s something we would have to figure out. I know before, you said you didn’t want to be queen and wished to remain in Midgard with the team. At the time, I assumed it was because of the state of our marriage and the distance I had placed between you and I. Is that still how you feel, Jessica? Has the progress we’ve made these last few months done anything to change your thoughts on the matter?”

Now it was her turn to take a moment to gather her thoughts while looking between him and the massive space around her as if she was truly assessing her surroundings for the first time.

“When you talked about it before, I was in such a dark mindset that there was no way I could give it serious thought. I’ll admit that yes, the direction our marriage was headed had a lot to do with me saying no before. I couldn’t trust you to be there. You were so hot and cold towards me that the thought of leaving my life behind was terrifying. Now that we’ve gone through everything that we have the last few months and rebuilt things between us, I’m finally able to consider it… and it’s a lot, Loki. I mean queen?Me? After seeing the way Frigga has ruled over Asgard, the bar is set pretty high!”

He couldn’t deny that his mother had been the definition of the perfect queen over his many years and even before that. Even so, the thought of her by his side as his queen felt like the greatest dream possible.

“You aren’t wrong, my love. I agree that it’s a huge decision and I want you to know that it truly is your choice. Just because the prior king has decreed it, doesn’t make it law. The successor still has the chance to respectfully decline and allow the council to choose the next king instead. If the immediate heirs give up their right to the throne, there are procedures in place to select a replacement. Usually, it goes to a council member as long as they are voted upon by the rest of the council and then a new blood line takes over ruling Asgard and the previous royal family is freed from their duties and become lords and ladies of the court instead. Either way, there will always be a place for us here in Asgard.”

Jessica processed the new information over the course of the morning after Loki left just after breakfast with the family in their private dining hall. Thor and Loki parted ways with them to head to meet with the council while her and Frigga took Maddie and the twins out to the garden to let them burn off some of their pent-up energy. After being kept inside their chambers the last two days during the day of rest and the funeral, they were more than excited to explore the grounds of the garden once again.

“I couldn’t help but notice how quiet you’ve been this morning, sweet girl. Care to talk about what is troubling you?”

She glanced at her mother-in-law with a sweet smile before turning her attention back to the kids as they ran around the field of wildflowers together. Madison was showing her brothers how to collect flowers to make a small bouquet and it was a precious moment.

“When you first became queen, did you know what you were doing?”

Her laughter helped ease the worry and she couldn’t help but join her.

“Dear child, I was not always the prim and proper woman standing before you now. I certainly had my fair share of slip ups in the beginning. Even the training I had before we were married wasn’t enough to make the queen that Asgard has come to know.”

“Training?”

The squeals of delight turned their attention back to the little ones as Madison started chasing the boys before switching and having them chase her instead.

“As the princess of a neighboring realm, it was always intended that I would be married to a prince in order to solidify our peace treaties. Because of this, I began training as soon as I became of age. Until they decided which realm I would rule, it was simple things. Proper etiquette for feasts and other royal ceremonies. Possible duties and responsibilities. Histories of several realms in order stay current on general diplomatic affairs. Once it was decided that I would rule Asgard beside Odin, I began to study the history and customs of Asgard until the time came to be wed and crowned their queen.”

“All of that still sounds like a lot though. How long did you go through this training?”

Frigga looked off to search her memory.

“Around 200 years perhaps? Give or take a few decades?”

It was easy for Jessica to forget about their difference in lifespans until she said something like that.

“And how long until you felt comfortable in your role as queen?”

The woman beside her gave her a knowing look, acknowledging her daughter-in-law’s line of thinking in this moment.

“Another hundred years or so for most things. Other rare occurrences took longer to become comfortable with, but eventually I learned that as long as your heart is in the right place and your people know that, they are usually pretty forgiving when you make mistakes.”

Before Jessica could respond, a guard stepped forward from the steps of the palace with a handmaiden and signaled that it was time for them to go before the council. After kissing the kids goodbye and leaving them with the young girl to take them back to their chambers where their nannies were waiting, Jessica silently made her way down the long corridor beside Frigga towards the throne room. Just before they reached the massive golden doors that held the body of the former king just days ago, they were greeted by two more guards who opened a door for them.

Once inside, she noticed the large table in the center of the space and the group of men she had met a handful of times before. At the far end of the table sat her husband and brother-in-law. The second the queen and princess appeared in the doorway, the entire room rose in a wave of movement out of respect for them as they made their way down to the other end towards the two princes. When Loki stretched his hand out to her, she happily placed her hand into his and watched as he left a sweet kiss on it before directing her to the open seat beside him. After she took her place beside Loki, Jessica watched Frigga take a shaky breath and sit down in the open seat meant for her husband. She noticed the queen’s expression once again take on a serious expression as she took on the role of the head of the council.

“You may be seated.”

Waiting for the councilmen to all take their seats once more, Frigga turned to a man on the left of Thor and addressed him directly.

“Lord Erikson, I understand our king charged you with the responsibility of drafting his final degrees?”

“He did, Your Majesty. I retrieved them from his private vault prior to our meeting this morning.”

She gave him a nod signaling him to continue. In front of the entire council and the family, the man she now knew as a son of Erik, one of Odin’s closest friends, broke the seal on the letter that had been designed solely for the king and cleared his throat before reading the letter.

“In the event of my departure to Valhalla before Asgard’s next council meeting, I, King Odin of Asgard, decree that the common wealth be granted their request of a new wing to the current school in the center of the village. The taxes should not be raised in order to accommodate such a basic need for the currently undersized building. The cost will be covered by the crown and work on said project should begin promptly in order to have the wing completed before the harvest in the fall.”

Jessica watched as each member of the table gave a nod of approval towards the queen.

“Let it be so. The children shall have their expansion to the school, and I honor King Odin’s wishes. No expense will be passed to the people of Asgard. Consider it granted and have the work begin immediately. Are there any other degrees, Lord Erikson?”

He shood his head before bowing it and looking at the one remaining item on the table in front of him. Unlike the previous document that was written on standard parchment, this paper was a much higher quality as if it needed to visually signify the importance of its contents.

“Please read the Allfather’s final degree.”

The man’s eyes darted around the room before moving between the two princes seated at the table with him. She knew the council chambers had been quiet before, but Jessica was pretty certain that not a single person in the room took a breath while Lord Erikson broke the wax seal and carefully unfolded the document. Lord Erikson quickly skimmed the letter in his hands before opening his mouth to speak.

“I, Odin, King of Asgard, declare that the throne will no longer follow the traditions of the past. In the event of my death, I do not wish for the crown to be passed down to my blood heir, Thor Odinson.”

There was a slight murmur that broke the silence in the room as the councilmen glanced around at each other. When she felt Loki’s hand gripped hers a little tighter, she looked up at him to find him paler than usual. His eyes were wide as they darted from the man beside Thor to lock with his brother’s. She noticed Thor’s eyes beginning to build with tears as he stared at his younger brother seated directly across from him.

Just when she thought he might have been upset with the change to tradition, his lips curled up into the slightest smirk and he nodded ever so slightly at Loki. The exchange was enough for Loki to let out an unsteady breath that was barely audible over the hushed voices around them. He laced his fingers between hers and gripped her hand to keep himself grounded just as Lord Erikson continued.

“Upon the day that I am called home to Valhalla, my successor shall be my younger son, Loki, the rightful king and ruler of Asgard.”

After her bath, Jae got dressed and then went to wake the kids for school. She first went into Magnus and LJ’s room, softly opening the door.

“Wakey, wakey eggs and bakey.” She smiled as she rubbed their backs. “Time for school.” They groaned and rolled over.

Jae repeated the process in Frigga’s room, which was decked out in full mermaid regalia. Finally, she reached William’s bedroom, really more of a glorified closet, and she banged on the door, yelling. “WAKE UP, TIME FOR SCHOOL! THE KIDS NEED BREAKFAST!” She walked away, not even bothering to open the door.

While the kids get dressed and William made them all breakfast, Jae stood in the bathroom doorway, inspecting her nails while Tom showered.

“You’re welcome.”

“Excuse me?” Tom popped his head out of the shower.

“Ew, your hair is dripping on the floor, Tom. I’m taking the kids to school on my way to Dr. Schulman. Say thank you.”

He resisted the urge to smile. “You’re not feeling well, I’m sorry to hear that.” He went back into the shower.

Jae snorted. “Dr. Schulman is a plastic surgeon. I’m thinking about getting my boobs done.”

“What that…” Tom turned off the water and stepped out, not bothering to wrap a towel around him. “Didn’t you get your boobs done a few years ago?”

She gagged at Tom’s naked form and spins around. Tom grinned, knowing he had his desired effect, only now drying off and wrapping a towel around his waist. He tried to get in tiny victories when he could.

“That was a boob LIFT, Thomas. This would be an augmentation.” Jae scoffed as she picked at her manicure. “I thought you were smart or something. Lucy thinks I would look better with Triple Ds.” She pressed her boobs together and grinned. “It’s not like you look, anyway.”

Tom walked past her and dropped his towel. “You’re right, I don’t.” He paraded naked in the bedroom, taking his time. “Is ‘Lucy’ paying for this augmentation?”

“I figured I could dip into the kids’ college funds. We have time to put it back…” She glanced up and frowned. “For fuck’s sake, Tom!” She shoved past him. “Put on some fucking clothes. What if one of the twins saw you?” Jae slammed the door shut as she stormed out.

Tom took as long as he could to dress and headed out to the kitchen in hopes they would be gone. He heard the blessed sound of silence as he stepped out of the bedroom. He sent a quick text to Will to apologize for not saying goodbye before they left.

It’s okay, Dad. Love you too.

Tom teared up at the simple text. He made his coffee and surveyed the wreck of the kitchen. Their most recent housekeeper quit three weeks ago, and Jae hadn’t bothered to either clean or hire a new one. Tom and Will did what they could, but the rest of the family made messes faster than they could clean.

He sipped his coffee and for the first time in years; he felt hopeful; he dared say, possibly even happy. The love of his life was pregnant with his child and he was finally going to get out of this train wreck, nightmare marriage.

“Freedom…” he hummed to himself. But it was going to take work. And a very detailed plan. The Birichinatas, probably the third biggest criminal family in New York, made it clear to Tom on the day of his wedding, it meant this marriage to be forever.

“Now Tommy, you mind if I call you Tommy?” Mikey, Jae’s dad, commented as they waited in a small room at St. Patrick’s Cathedral. “My number one concern is my daughter’s happiness. She’s my precious baby girl and my princess. And should anyone decide to hurt her, I would feel obligated to hurt that person back.” He smiled at Tom as he tightened Tom’s tie. “And I hate hurting people, but I will do it because my family is the most important thing to me.”

Tom cleared his throat. “Of course, sir. I am thrilled to be joining your family today, sir. I will do my best to make your daughter happy.”

Mikey chuckled darkly and patted Tom’s chest. “Oh, you’re not family, Tommy. Just because you are marrying my daughter doesn’t make you family. Family is committed. Family is loyal. Family would die for you, Tommy. Are you willing to die for me, Tommy?”

Tom paled. “Die… for… you…? You can’t be serious.” He chuckled nervously, glancing at the door, praying for someone, anyone, to interrupt.

Mikey smiled at him. “And that’s why you’re not family, Tommy.” He smacked Tom hard on the shoulder. So hard, Tom winced. “Let’s go get you hitched.” Mikey headed for the door. “Did my little love tap leave a bruise?” His laugh echoed off the walls as he headed out.

The first thing Tom was going to need was money. Specifically cash. And lots of it. Frugal was not a word he would use to describe Jae. She demanded the best of everything, even that meant Tom worked summer school or did private tutoring from time to time. And he couldn’t leave cash around the house. She could sniff out cash like a bloodhound.

After searching his study and the rest of the house, he collected about five hundred bucks that won’t go missing. It wasn’t enough to leave, but it was a start. He had a few hours before his first lecture. He grabbed his phone.

Meet me before my first class. Usual spot.

-

Maddie spent most of the night after Tom left crying. She couldn’t pinpoint whether it was hormones, despair, or a bit of both.

“I don’t understand why she won’t agree to a divorce. You hate each other. She has ‘Lucy’ or whatever the fuck his name is.” she asked him that night.

Tom sighed as he pulled her tighter against his chest, smoothing down her hair. “It’s not about happiness, my princess. It’s about ownership. It’s about control. She takes some sort of sick pleasure in torturing me.”

“She’s a fucking bitch.” Maddie clenched her fist. “And I ever get the chance…”

“Please don’t, my love.” He kissed her. “She’s not worth it. None of them are. You are worth a thousand Jae Birichinatas.” He kissed her again.

She saw Tom’s text as she stepped out of the shower.

I have work. But I will be there.

She quickly pulled on a pair of faded jeans and floral off the shoulder top. She slipped on a pair of black Chucks, grabbed her slouchy no name purse and locked up, heading to her first of two jobs, working at an independent bookstore in Tribeca.

Twenty minutes before she was set to clock out, a woman with slightly too much makeup, skirt slightly too short, and boots definitely too high approached.

“You.” The woman snapped her fingers at her. “Mousy girl. Come here.”

“I have a name, ma’am.” She moved towards her.

The woman sneered. “So do I. Ever heard of Michael Birchinata? That’s my father. Now…” Jae glanced around the place, not touching a thing. “My… son… has a birthday coming up, and he’s into this sort of stuff.” She waved her hands around.

It took every molecule of self-control in Maddie’s being to not lunge at Jae and pummel her into a pulp right there in the Young Adult section. She took a deep breath and exhaled.

“You mean books?” Maddie crossed her arms and pursed her lips. “Or did you mean the shelves?”

Jae shot Maddie a condescending sneer. “These shelves wouldn’t be caught dead in my home. And I don’t appreciate your tone. What’s your name, Mousy?”

Maddie bristled. She chewed on her lip, contemplating what to say. “Madelyn.” She lied, but a white lie. “McClary.” Another lie.

Jae leaned in. “Any relations to the McGregor-McClary clan of Rockaway?”

“I’m Canadian.” Maddie added.

“Oh, well. Aren’t Canadians supposed to be friendly or some shit.? I’ll be speaking to your manager. Humph.” She spun on the heel and headed to the front of the store.

“Shit!” Maddie hissed and weaved her way through the shelves to spy poor Marshall, the assistant manager, getting an earful from Jae.

“If that insolent little twat of an employee isn’t fired, I am going to sue this place for emotional distress! Do you know who my father is?!”

Whatever Marshall said placated Jae such that she left the store with a smile, catching Maddie’s eye and giggling. Maddie counted to ten and approached Marshall, who sighed.

“Madison.” He beckoned her over. “First off, why did you tell that… Karen your name was Madelyn McClary?”

“You didn’t tell her my real name, did you?” She yelled. “Do you know who she is? Who her family is?”

Marshall narrowed his eyes. “Birichinata? Don’t they own that gigantic gold building 5th and 56th?”

“And her father is commonly known as Mikey the Mook. He runs one of the largest crime families in New York, possibly the United States. That Karen is Jae, his only daughter.” Maddie huffed.

Marshall raised a brow. “How do you know so much about her and her family?”

Maddie turned bright red and chewed on her lip. “No reason, I just read the papers.”

“You are the worst liar, Madison. I told her I would fire you.” She sighed and headed towards the counter to grab her purse. “But I never agreed that you would stay fired.”

“Marshall!” She ran up and hugged the goateed man. “You are a good man.” She shook him.

“No, I am a stupid man, but you’re like family, Madison. And the best sales worker I have. Take a two-week vacation, paid. That should be long enough to convince Ms. Birichinata I fired you.”

Maddie grinned. She hadn’t taken time off in two years. “Thank you. Oh, and she’s a Mrs.” She grabbed her purse and hugged Marshall one last time before skipping out to meet Tom.

“I don’t want to know how you know that, MADISON!” he yelled after her.

-

Tom’s foot bounced as he waited for Maddie. The roar of the waterfall did nothing to soothe his nerves. He kept glancing around at the few other people milling about Greenacre Park, seeing if anyone looks familiar. Tom assumed these days he was being followed. A wide grin came over his face when Maddie plopped down in the chair next to him.

“You never mentioned how pretty Jae is. In that sort of Jersey Shore, Snooki kind of way.”
Tom’s mouth fell open. “How did… what… What happened today at work, Maddie?”

“Your wife came into Dashwood looking for a birthday present for William. She called me mousy, I might have gotten sassy.” Maddie winced.

Tom tugged at his curls on the nape of his neck. “You met her? Like talked to her? This is bad, Maddie. She has seen you. She knows where you work.” He swallowed hard to keep from hyperventilating.

She reached over and grabbed Tom’s hand. “Hey, hey, hey. It’s fine. Everything is fine. The whole thing was maybe ten minutes, and I didn’t even tell her my real name.” Maddie chuckled. “She had me fired.”

Tom’s mouth dropped open. “My bitch of a wife got your fired and you are laughing. This is serious, Madison. We can’t afford—”

“My boss gave me two weeks’ paid vacation, instead.” She grinned and pushed a curl behind his ear. “Two weeks to plan.”

Tom took several moments to process everything Maddie just said. A grin grew and grew over his face. “That’s my princess.” He squeezed her hand. “I love you.”

“I love you too. Now why are we meeting?”

“Right.” He dug through his satchel and pulled out two thick envelopes. “Here.”

She opened the first one to find a flip cell phone. Maddie raised a brow. “I already have a phone.”

“I know. This is a burner phone. I have one too.” He waved an identical phone in the air. “I want you to communicate with my only through this phone until I tell you otherwise.”

“You make it sound like someone is tapping our calls.”

Tom gave her a stare.

“Okay…” she opened the next envelope with a stack of tens and twenties. “Tom?”

“It’s the first feathers of our nest egg, darling. It’s not safe at my place. Jae is a goddamn bloodhound. Keep it at your place.” He watched as she tucked both envelopes into her purse. “The first steps to us being together.”

“The family… the life you deserve, Thomas.”

“WE deserve.” He took the risk and gave her a quick kiss. The moment broken by his phone buzzing. “It’s time for me to go.”

Her eyes turned down. “Then you should go. I wish you were coming over tonight. We have so much to talk about it.”

Tom sighed. “Believe me, princess, I wish I was too. It is my preferred evening activity, eating a good meal cooked by you and me than the pretentious affair that is dinner with my in laws.” He stood up.

Maddie quickly got to her feet. “Well then, to help you get through dinner, just think about me naked, on the bed, wet and ready for you.” She smirked.

He groaned and pulled her into a passionate embrace. “My father-in-law is going to wonder why my pants are so tight all evening.”

“And your mother-in-law?”

“Is going to want to get into my pants. Did I tell you about the reception?”

“No….?”

Tom pecked her lips. “Another time. I have to go, princess. I will call you. Soon.”

“I can’t wait. Stay safe, my prince.”

“What could go wrong? They ignore me anyway.” Tom gazed over his shoulder one last time at Maddie before heading back into reality.

Tom paced the hall between his study and the living room. Their apartment was more than anything they could afford on Tom’s modest salary as a professor at NYU and Jae’s party planning “business.” A wedding present from Jae’s parents. Tom begged Jae at the time to decline the gift.

“TURN DOWN A PARK AVENUE APARTMENT?!” she shrieked. “ARE YOU INSANE?”

“What’s wrong with living in Brooklyn? I have a nice little place for us and the bab—”

“OUR CHILD IS NOT BEING RAISED IN BROOKLYN! I have standards. My family has a reputation to uphold, and that is not in Brooklyn, Tom!”

He capitulated, blaming it on pregnancy hormones and the stress of a quickie wedding. Tom was wrong. When William was born, Jae gazed down at her newborn baby.

“Oh, he looks like you.” She glared up at Tom and handed the baby off to him. “So where’s my push present?”

Please don’t, Tom.

He saw Maddie’s plea and his heart broke.

The woman I love is pregnant. Of course I am coming over. I’m not scared of them.

A lie. One he told himself often.

Be safe, my prince.

Tom dialed the number for the only man who could help. It rang three times before silence on the other end as someone picked up.

“Vinnie?”

More silence.

“Want to take the kids out to the movies?”

There was one long beep. Tom smiled. He could always count on Vinnie to provide cover.

“You’re a good man, Vinnie. The only decent person in the whole bunch.”

The line went dead. Tom clapped his hands and headed into the living room. “Who wants to go to the movies with Vinnie while Daddy does some work?”

The twins tossed the cereal they were snacking on into the air, while LJ just glared. William’s face twisted in horror.

“Do I HAVE to go? Can’t I stay with you?” His blue eyes pleaded with his father.

His eyes linger on William, how different he was from his siblings, and how Jae never seemed to care for him. After all, William was a mistake, and Jae made sure not that he knew it, but William knew as well. It makes Tom’s blood boil. If it weren’t for Jae’s family, he would have left a long time ago. Now he had a renewed energy to break free from this well-appointed prison. He walked over and cupped Will’s face.

“Not tonight. I’m sorry.” He planted a kiss on the top of his head. “But I will make it up to you. Soon.” Tom pulled his son into a hug. “Soon.”

“Can I at least bring my book?” He held up a tattered copy of Shakespeare.

Tom ruffled his curls. “Of course.” A knock at the door.

“VINNIE!!!” the other kids screamed and ran to the door, tackling their cousin as they opened the door.

The hulk of a man smirked, his eyes hidden behind a pair of sunglasses. “Go wait down by the elevator.” When Will comes sulking by. “I’ll pick the theater next to the bookstore, if you would rather go there, Will.”

The boy’s eyes lit up. “Really?! Thanks, Vinnie!” He headed out towards the elevator. LJ knocked his book out of his hand and kicked it down the hall.

Vinnie turned to Tom. “Lovely children.”

Tom frowned. “They take after THEIR mother. You got here rather quick.”

“I was in the neighborhood.” He stepped out of the apartment holds up two fingers.

Tom nodded. “Understood. Thanks Vinnie.”

The man turned and headed down the hall to collect the Birichinata kids. Tom shut the door and hurried to his office, shoving the essays into his leather satchel and headed down to his beat up Honda Civic. Tom took twice the time to reach Maddie’s Bronx apartment, switching back several times. Just in case. Maddie ran out of the front door of the five-story walkup to tackle Tom on the sidewalk, wrapping her arms and legs around his lean form.

“You’re here!’ she half sobbed, half cheered, kissing him deeply.

Tom wrapped his arms around her and returned the kiss briefly before breaking contact. “I told you I would. I had to come.” His hand moved down to linger on her still flat stomach. “But it’s not safe. We need to go inside.”

They spent the next hour making vague plans, crying, and kissing. Maddie’s fingers laced with Tom’s. “You’re really going to do it. You said it was impossible. You said…” her voice caught in her throat. “… they would never let you out alive.”

Tom gulped and nodded. “I said that, but I will take the risk. For us. For our child.” He grinned at her. Our child. Something he never thought he would say ever again. Maddie leaned over and kissed his cheek. “My knight in shining armor. My prince.” She smiled. “I want that. I wanted it for years. Us.” Tears streamed down her face. “Finally.”

“Finally, my princess. Our happily ever after.” He kissed her again. “I have to go. But don’t lose faith. We will be together soon. I promise.”

He picked up his bag, essays still ungraded, and heads to the door and down to his car. As he left the Bronx and drove closer to his apartment building, he dreaded heading home. Tom wanted to keep driving, turn around, grab Maddie and disappear. Then he remembered Will. The only other bright spot in his life. He didn’t give a damn about the rest of them. The other three weren’t his. Jae hadn’t let him touch her since that night they conceived Will. He couldn’t leave his son behind with that wretched bitch. Even if she was his mother.

Vinnie returned ten minutes after Tom got home, a twin over each shoulder, with LJ and Will dragging behind him. “You’re welcome.”

“Thank you, Vinnie.” They exchanged nods as Vinnie handed over the twins.

Once the kids were put to bed, Will headed to his study, grading essays into the night while making plans in his head.

-

Jae came stumbling into the apartment early the next morning before anyone else was up. She carried her boots in her hand and her jacket was missing entirely. Dark marks on her neck and chest stood out on her skin, certainly not there when she left. There is a slight limp to her walk from the evening’s activities.

“A god among men.” She muttered to herself. As she stumbles towards the bathroom, she glanced over to the kitchen, fully expecting to see Tom at the table, reading the paper, just like he did every morning. But he wasn’t there. Her brow furrowed when she finds his study empty as well.

“If that bastard left in the dead of…” she opened the door to the bedroom to see Tom sleeping in his bed, smiling. “Huh… why is he smiling?” She grew immediately suspicious. Tom never smiled anymore.

Jae rummaged through her closet to find the phone she used to clone Tom’s cell months ago when he stupidly left it out where she could find it. She found all the texts between Tom and Maddie in no time.

“So princess is going to squeeze out a puppy? Cute. Unfortunately, there is no happily ever after for you, princess. Not with this…” She sneered at Tom. “…prince. He’s mine and you shouldn’t play with other people’s things.”

She hid the phone again and went to soak in a long bath. She dialed her phone. “Daddy?” she pouted. “Tom is being naughty again. Yes, he’s fooling around. Can you have one of your guys look into his little fucktoy? I don’t know much, just some little fucking husband thief! Her first name is Maddie. Oh, and she’s pregnant. Thanks, Daddy.” She hummed in the bath. “And I live happily ever after.”

“Tom, I’m going out. Watch the kids.” Jae tugged on a glittered thigh high boot to complement her short sequined dress, before grabbing a short black feathered jacket to go over the entire ensemble.

Tom’s head popped out from his study, his one safe space in their sprawling New York apartment. “That’s the third time this week. I have papers to grade.” He frowned at his wife as he glared at her outfit. “Where are you going?”

“Out. With a friend.” She didn’t even bother to glance up at her husband. Jae smiled at him. “Are you saying you can’t handle your own children? I could always have my Ma come over to babysit while you work.” She tilted her head to the side, the same smile plastered on her face as she waited for his response. Jae already knew what it would be.

Tom glanced into the living room to see the children. The twins, Frigga and Magnus, were currently fighting over the last package of fruit snacks, while LJ was doing something in a corner that appeared to involve fire but no matches. And his oldest, William, sat curled up in a beat up leather chair, glasses slipping as he read the Complete Works of Shakespeare. Again. His ginger curls a stark contrast to his siblings’ darker looks.

“No, I’ll handle it. Have a good night. And I will see you later.” he sighed, his shoulders slumped in defeat.

“Oh, Lucy and I will probably just get a hotel room.” A smirk came across her face. “And don’t forget dinner with my family on Friday night.” She walked over to pick a piece of lint off his sweater with disdain. “Daddy is looking forward to seeing you.”

“BUT FRIDAYS ARE MY NIGHT!” Tom’s voice boomed. The children not even pausing at the outburst. It wasn’t the first time they overheard this argument. “I‘ve had to cancel on the boys the past three Fridays.” He whined.

“Then one more won’t make that much of a difference. Unless you want me to tell my father you couldn’t bother to come.”

Tom gulped. The last time he “missed” a family dinner with her family, his car was sideswiped and nearly totaled. “It’s not necessary to involve your father. I will be there.” He forced a smile. A skill he had perfected over the last ten years of marriage to Jae.

This is not what Tom imagined marriage to be. He imagined a wife that loved him. And he loved. That dream went out the window with two pink lines. Too much scotch at a bachelor party led to Tom grinding against Jae on the dance floor at a club he would normally never go. Which led to one drunken night of some wild sex in a hotel room. Tom didn’t realize that Jae was Jae Nicole Birichinata, only daughter of the infamous mafia boss, Michael Birichinata. Fast forward and Tom was stuck in a hellscape, which included a wife who could barely stand to be in the same room as him and three more children he knew weren’t his, despite his name being on the birth certificates.

“Good to hear. Aren’t things better when I get my way?” There is a knock on the door. “Lucy’s here!!” She goes skittering to the door and opens it, blocking most of Tom’s view.

“Ready to go, darling?” asks a deep voice belonging to someone not named Lucy.

“Fuck yes I am. DON’T WAIT UP!!” she hustled out the door.

Tom leaned over and swore he got a glimpse of a fine Italian suit. Men’s suit. He sighed and headed back to his study, and stared at the stack of ungraded English essays from his students. With a heavy heart, he pulled out his phone to text. I am sorry, but I am going to have to cancel our Friday date again, princess. He set the phone down and waited for the response.

Loki grinned as Jae came bouncing out of the apartment, closing the door before her husband or kids could see who was behind it.

“Ready for some fun, Jae? I’ve already booked us the VIP table at Marquee for later, and dinner tonight is sushi at Nakazawa.” Loki knew that would excite her. And she did not disappoint with an excited squeal and dance.

He put his arm around her, always loving the way her boots clacked on the sidewalk. It was a reminder of her spark, her fire. The light that had almost been extinguished by domestic “bliss” thanks to her wet towel of a husband and the child they accidentally made together over a decade ago.

Well, he did what he could to rectify her situation. Making sure she still got to enjoy all the finer things in life.

“I’m SO ready, Lucy.” She giggled a bit cruelly. Though who could blame her? “And I organized family dinner or Friday so Tom can’t go see his little ‘princess’… ugh, like I don’t know he’s not seeing ‘the boys’. What boys?! What FRIENDS, even?”

She laughed, and he joined her. Verbally beating down her husband was one of her favorite pastimes. He found it was best to let her release that pressure valve early in the night.

“Of course, darling. You deserve so much better…” He leaned over and kissed her cheek, grinning as she giggles and squeals. “And I plan to give it to you, husband or not.”

She leaned over and kissed his cheek back, not caring they weren’t even out of the apartment building. Her father paid off all the employees, anyway. “And I plan on taking it.” She grinned and throws her head back as they climb into Loki’s black town car, heading off to dinner.

Tom sighed as he glimpsed the town car pulled away from the building. “She could at least have the decency to walk around the block.” He muttered to himself. Just then, his phone buzzed.

THAT FUCKING BITCH! I swear, Tom, she does it on purpose! It’s like she knows exactly how to make our lives miserable.

A small smile crossed his face. He always enjoyed Maddie’s spirit. Her fire. It was one of her many qualities that made him fall in love with her. While his wife’s eyes reflected only contempt and disappointment, Madison’s shone with compassion and devotion. Their stolen pockets of time, clandestine dates at her cramped apartment in the Bronx, dinners at restaurants no one ever heard of; they were the lifeblood of the past four years for Tom.

Of course she knows, darling. That is the entire purpose of this. To make my life miserable. Why else would she force me to raise kids that are not mine?

It takes several minutes before his phone buzzed again.

I can’t, Thomas. I need to tell you something important. I was going to tell you in person. But since the hag won’t let that happen…

Tom inhaled sharply, and he shook, tears welling up in his eyes. This is it. She’s leaving. She has finally had it. His mind raced and what to say, how to cope.

I’m pregnant.

And with two words, Tom realized he had to get out.

I’m coming over.

BEFORE I FORGET!!! Writing credit also goes to @fadingcoast@lokifae42 and @emeraldrosequartz Not only did they help write certain parts of the stories, this series would never have been written without them.  They know why.  They have been invaluable to me over the past year. And this story is as much mine as it is yours.

Also chapters are a little shorter than usual, about 1800 or so words.
