Misha had such a perfect cockatoo day! We started off at the @tgfarmersmarket (I’m going to get a bandana for him from @izzysbarkinbandanass ), then did the South Grand Art Fair, ate at @steveshotdogs , and he had the most fun sitting pretty in a friend’s peach tree. He told me for the first time, as I was putting him to bed, “Misha love you” (which Chris tells me he practices saying when I’m not around, but this was the first time he said this to me and in context no less). He’s previously just said “Misha love her”. Went to the Tower Grove Farmer’s Market a little late and got some kombucha. Drank it and had snacks at a nearby friend’s. It was so windy that Misha had a hard time hanging on to my arm (his toes face the wrong way and are spastic, from birth). 7 years ago today, I was fated to become a “failed foster” with Misha. I was not looking for a bird and I was actually pretty scared of Moluccan cockatoos, yet I was immediately able to handle Misha. When a bird chooses you and there’s that spark of immediate connection, there is no saying no without lifelong regret. Misha was about 6 years old when we met, and he’s gone through the rowdy adolescent phase surprisingly well (none of the aggression or personality changes that others have documented). He’s gladly accepted a harness so he can go out with me, and he adapts to whatever my schedule is. He is the best bird about choosing and eating healthy foods, and in 7 years he has destroyed less of my house and belongings than Boo does in one year. This harness worked out great on Boo until he had a stress seizure getting it off . We did everything right… But it’s just not meant to be. He will go to indoor get togethers only, or outside in his bubble. Misha was very sad that we left @shortymixcookies party early.

Perfect weather and evening to have chicken on a stick from @graffitigrubstl and a cocktail from @stlbarkeep (said hi to @bark_n_sniff). How is it that Boo is so darn hormonal and hyperactive all the time?! He’s worse at 21 than when he was 15!! Misha, on the other hand, is so much more emotionally stable and just easier going all around, including hormones. At 12 years old Misha is deliberate, predictable and not nearly so frantic. Boo acts like I’ve never told him no (which I totally have a few times). I love Boo with all my heart but some nights like tonight he’s a bit much . Clearly, if you give a cockatoo a cookie you’ll end up giving it Ted Drewes and it will shortly take over your life

Took Boo to the @tgfarmersmarket for the first time. He started taking his harness off so he had to stay in his bubble. He said “hi” to all the people and got jealous when Misha got attention. We stopped by @shortymixcookies and a few other booths. My birds both love attention and @holeekao is a champ for indulging them with me .
