If you didn’t know, in the original LatAm dub of The Little Mermaid (1989) Ursula the Sea Witch is voiced by Serena Olvido, a trans singer and actress! Her voice is INCREDIBLE!
I strongly encourage you to watch the whole clip, not only is it an awesome example how how seamlessly the LatAm dub fits the lip sync animation, but Serena Olvido’s performance only gets better and more intense as the song progresses, unforgettable!
In Sleeping Beauty (1959) Maleficent calls forth “all the powers of hell” in her battle against the prince- in the first LatAm dub she’s way more specific and says he’ll have to face her and all the powers of Lucifer!
That’s a small line change, but the true magic is in the voice—
Check out all the emotion Rosario Muñoz Ledo (original LatAm dub) gave her, it makes her curse on the castle in the final battle a lot more poetic and fitting of the dramatic music and sound effects.
Besides how badass are her lines?
“Una selva de mortales espinos será su tumba.
Atravesad los cielos en una nube de oscura perdición.
¡Id con mi maldición!
Prestad bien vuestro servicio,
y, sobre el castillo de Stéfano,
¡DERRAMAD MI MALEFICIO!“
Someone in the video commented “these 3 minutes of video blow all of Disney’s ‘live actions’ out of the water”.
(I added the quotation marks around ‘live action’ because they’re heavily/fully animated, just in a different way).
I think the LatAm dub for Sleeping Beauty was remade and it’s not as powerful anymore, but you should still check out this jewel from the original dub and how well it fits the incredible animation / music / sound effects!
ETA: As a side note, I love the stylization in this film! It’s very evocative and creates a lot of awesome contrasts, it’s a very artistic film, for lack of smarter words.
Did you know in the Latin American dub of Dumbo (1941) the song “Pink Elephants on Parade” is “Las Ánimas del Terror” (“The Spirits/Souls of Terror”) and explicitly references the elephant visions maybe being related to Satan?
The little voice that sings about not being one to scare easy in the original instead talks about how he faced the Devil and pulled off his tail, and yet the colorful elephants make him scared!
I was also surprised to see No reference in the original lyrics about these visions happening because of alcohol- in LatAm Spanish you can hear “I’ll never get drunk again!” And literally how “A vision (of colorful elephants) appears to those that abuse of alcohol”
Anyways, I thought it was an interesting fact, go check it out, it’s a pretty ominous and neat dub!
