abybweisse:

LOL, here’s a preview from the upcoming Masterpost 6…. (It just tickles me pink).

Some pics I put together showing the “bouncers” at Sphere Music Hall vs. their counterparts, SkinheadandNeckbeard, in Mother3atClub Titiboo.

Sebastian(akaBoney, the loyal dog) is sent away from Sphere Music Hall(akaClub Titiboo)… for not being HUMAN. We have bald and clean-shaven dude (Skinhead) and hairy, bearded dude (Neckbeard).

InMother3,Violet(*cough*Gregory Violet *cough*) later gets LucasandBoneyinto the exclusiveClub Titiboo and even backstage to speak with the band, DCMC, and to remindLuckyhe is really Duster.

NOW, all we need within the next several chapters of Black Butler is for Gregory Violet to get the earlandSebastiannot just back into Sphere Music Hall but also “backstage”,so they can speak with the S4… and findLizzieto remind her who she really is, what she really stands for….

Saw some recent activity on this post and thought to revisit it. Quick update on this.

Our earl doesindeed encounter Gregory Violet when he goes back to Sphere Music Hall for the special “Sirius” event, and you can call that a type of “backstage”… kind of. But Sebastian relies on Nina to get him back inside, where he really does go completely backstage (sees the lab, the blood supply, and the lords’ rooms). Sebastian also encounters Lizzie there, but what she says isn’t very explanatory. Ultimately, he fails to sway her back to our earl’s side, because she won’t even listen to him.

So, not a perfect parallel, but this is actually good. Perfect parallels would have been a bit boring, honestly.

Me: *Realizing that Layla and Al (possibly short for Alyal) might be Lord Vega… and being totally ok that they are Vega (instead of Layla being Canopus by herself)… as long as it meansour mirror twins really might also have anagram names, like I’ve been saying since December 2015.*

Come on, Ciel and Elic….

Layla has a Mother3parallel

Oh my word, I think I just found Layla’s parallel in Mother3.

It’s this cute little enemy called Ms. Marshmallow or Li'l Ms. Marshmallow, a robotic maid for King Porky. Lucas and pals encounter her at Thunder Tower, which has a spiral staircase. A battle with her is completely optional, but she gets angry if you inspect and try to touch something called “Friend’s Yo-Yo”, which belongs to King Porky and is kept in a glass case. She yells:

“IF YOU TAKE MASTER KING P’S VERY PRECIOUS "FRIEND’S YO-YO” I WILL BE MAD. MAD! MAD! VERY MAD MAD MAD MAD!!!!!!“ (Before battle)

Once she’s been injured, she goes into a higher/stronger attack mode that can damage multiple enemies, called Ultra Ticked-Off System. Because she’s a machine, she’s effectively injured by Saltwater Gun. When she’s defeated, she talks complete gibberish until she finally stops functioning.

"YOU REAP WHAT YOU SOW SO SEW SO-SO GREETINGS CHEESE POPSICLE THE NUMBER YOU HAVE DIALED IS CURRENTLY OUT OF PORK CHOPS FROM EAST TO WEST IT GOES GOES BROKEN BROKEN OH SO SOW SEW BROKEN *whir* *clank* *clunk*” (After battle)

The fandom wiki says “Once she is defeated, she slumps, sways, and falls to the ground before yelling nonsensical phrases and exploding.”

***

With Layla, we have this cutesied-up little girl dressed as a nurse (instead of maid), and she’s working for Lord Ciel (instead of King Porky). She’s encountered at Athena Sanatorium, where blood is collected in a tower with a spiral staircase. She doesn’t give Baldo or Lau a hard time until they are obviously messing with Lord Ciel’s blood supply.

When she’s injured, she says it’s not hurting her and she goes into a higher attack mode. Her eyes look kind of crazy now, and she starts talking about Baldo and Lau as being food to her.

When you injure her enough, which can be done with a gunshot to the heart, she sways, slumps onto the desk, then falls to the floor and starts talking to “Al”, who isn’t there. She might be talking nonsense, but it’s hard to tell because we don’t know whether Al exists.

If this parallel holds up damn near 100%, she might completely bleed out while running through the woods and just keep talking to herself (or this “Al” who still hasn’t shown up) until she stops functioning. Or she gets her brains scrambled by someone in pursuit, like a reaper. If that’s the case, another battle could be held against “Al”, if that person exists (which I suspect they do). We don’t see Ronald in ch188, so it’s possible he’s fighting this “Al” person while Lau and Baldo are fighting Layla.

Even if it’s not a near 100% parallel, Layla (and also likely Al) should eventually be defeated… after a more intense battle??… and she (or both of them) might start talking absolute nonsense as she’s (they’re) “dying”.

If Layla (and whoever Al is supposed to be) makes up Lord Vega, their echoing sort of speech reminds me a bit of how Li'l Ms. Marshmallow’s speech can be sort of repetitive.

*** ***

Now… there’s also the issue of Jane, who is dressed as a maid at Heathfield Manor, where more blood was also being collected. However, the parallels aren’t nearly as strong:

  • Jane is a hired soldier dressed as a maid, but she’s not this adorable little kid-looking sort of person, and she talks quite normally.
  • She’s working at Heathfield Manor, where there’s a blood collection facility for Lord Ciel, but it’s collected underground, not in a tower with a spiral staircase.
  • She doesn’t cause much of an issue until Ran-Mao is chosen to become a “donor”. Then she’s even more of an adversary once Mey-Rin is snooping around looking for Ran-Mao and finds the collection facility. But she doesn’t get severely injured in the fight.
  • She gives up once the operation’s cover is completely blown, so she gets to just walk away, and she’s never talked nonsense.

So, I don’t really see Jane as a parallel to Li'l Ms. Marshmallow, though she might be seen as a precursor. There might be a more direct parallel to Jane elsewhere in the game, possibly also in chapter 5, “Tower of Thunder”. ‍♀️

I’m having a Mother3 field day today. Prepare to be bombed by various posts regarding new parallels I’ve found….

Working on an ask that’s about the timeline for Black Butler, and I just realized it’s been a very long time since I read the play-through of Mother3, and I’m being reminded of so many details regarding the timeline and all the little actions characters take. It’s so much information that my head is swimming.

And now I need to rest.

delicate-transformation:

What can we expect from Grell’s character arc?

Yana Toboso writes her characters with their futures in mind and plans events in the story as much as ten years in advance. Following a short discussion with @abybweisse, I decided to make a post covering Grell’s character arc, which will go into depth about how I think Toboso has been rewriting her portrayal and what I see as the character’s future. I want to talk about Grell’s introduction, what Toboso has chosen to focus on since that introduction, what she has discarded, and what I see as her intentions for the future of the manga. This is entirely my opinion, so don’t treat what I say as gospel. I took inspiration from this postandthis post.

Origins (2007; chapters 9-12)

In many ways, Grell is an unusual character in Black Butler. As mentioned in the first post above, she was added to a pre-existing story about a female serial killer (Angelina Dalles) as a supernatural foil to Sebastian to appeal to GFantasy magazine’s shounen demographic. The design for the grim reapers wasn’t even finalized until during the Jack the Ripper story arc, which is why Grell has pointy teeth but none of the grim reapers who appear later do. Because of this writing decision, she runs into the problem of potentially not having a predetermined place in the story, unlike other characters whose arcs were decided as many as ten years earlier.

Right off the bat, Grell is depicted as a serial murderer of cisgender women, one of the oldestandmost common tropes of queer characters in media. Her writing also invokes specific stereotypes of transgender women found in Japanese media at the time but that’s a topic for another conversation. Grell is a thoroughly unsympathetic character in this arc, whose motive for helping Angelina in chapter 11 is explained as sympathy for Angelina’s desire to have children, but is framed in a way that looks a lot like manipulation:

She also kills her partner in crime of nearly three years because she thinks Angelina has gone soft when she won’t murder Ciel, her nephew:

At the end of chapter 12, after Grell is defeated and William arrives to arrest her, Sebastian provides a moral to conclude the story that applies as much to his twisted relationship with Ciel as it does to Grell and Angelina:

Humans are easily tempted. When they are poised on the edge of hellish despair and a spider’s thread of salvation presents itself, they will invariably grasp it… no matter the manner of human.

2008-2010

Black Butler was greenlit for an anime adaptation in 2008, unusually early for a manga that only started being serialized in 2006. The existing story arcs of Black Butler were all adapted into the anime, but because they ran out of material from the manga to adapt, the staff of the anime were forced to write original stories with the same characters. Grell is missing from the manga from chapter 13 to chapter 54 (although… canonically she’s only absent for a little over five months and punished for exactly three), but she reappears only a few episodes after her arrest in the anime.

I’m not going to cover season two because she gets no development in it, but Grell’s character arc in season one of the anime goes like this: after she is arrested by William, she is allowed to return to her job and ends up helping Ciel rescue Elizabeth after she is kidnapped and turned into a doll. Ciel and Sebastian gradually come to see Grell as an ally and she regains William’s trust, as he first allows her to use a death scythe similar to his, and then returns her original, illegally modified scythe to her by the end of the season.

The anime’s character arc for Grell was a good start, but it always felt incomplete. The fact that she murdered Ciel’s aunt and attempted to kill both him and Sebastian is swept under the rug, and this version of Grell feels way more silly and less competent than her manga counterpart. For better or worse though, the anime did help popularize Grell and affected the fandom’s perception of her as a result.

In 2009, while Grell was still absent from the manga, we saw the publication of the manga’s only character guide. There isn’t a lot to go over, but the character guide confirms that Grell was being truthful when she seemed to sympathize with Angelina. It also reaffirms her reason for killing Angelina (the part with the arrow above) and confirms that Ciel grieved at the loss of his aunt.

Return (2011-2012; chapters 55-65)

2011 was an important year for Grell as a character because she finally returned in the manga’s March issue after a 42-chapter hiatus. Chapter 55 starts where we left off in chapter 12: she is still a danger to Ciel and Sebastian, she is still an antisocial character who is unaffected by human suffering, she is still impulsive and hypersexual.

Except this time some things have changed. We’re introduced to Grell’s younger colleague, Ronald, for whom she is a mentor. With Ronald, we get to see her let her guard down for the first time in the manga, and even have fun. Unlike her interactions with William, Ronald never uses violence to persuade her. We also see her competently performing her job as a soul collector, in line with Toboso’s desire to portray her as a capable grim reaper.

Undertaker is the main villain of this story arc, and during its climax, Grell battles him one-on-one. This only lasts a few pages, but it gives us one of our most interesting insights into her as a character and sets up a future conflict between her and Undertaker. In this scene, he attempts to manipulate Grell by pointing out their similarities, and we get our first hint that she can feel remorse for her actions:

Oh…

To wrap up this story arc and bring the reader back home, we get a comedic scene of William coming to drag Grell home similar to the ending of chapter 12, but this time we know there is more to her as a character, which puts her boisterous exterior into perspective.

2011 was also the year the final OVAs of the second season of the anime were aired, including The Story of Will the Reaper in April. This OVA, inspired by the idea that William owes a debt to Grell, is Toboso’s favorite of the OVAs, and she was personally involved in its creation. In it, we meet a younger Grell who is still closeted and coming to terms with herself, and are thus shown a side of her that we haven’t seen before in the manga or the anime. This OVA is the first time her queer identity is treated with any sensitivity, even though it misses the mark sometimes.

2013-present

Grell has another long absence from the manga from chapter 66 to chapter 104. When she reappears in chapter 105 she is with William and once again the manga contrasts her silly exterior with the information about her we are given. This is a way to deliver this information without forcing the reader to feel sorry for her. What we see versus what we hear:

This chapter lays the groundwork for the manga’s next story arc, which is an Undertaker-centric arc. So far, Grell is not a major player in this arc, but we’ve met another of her grim reaper friends, Othello, and learned that she died less than 70 years ago. This arc also promises a rematch between her and Undertaker in the future.

The future?

In future chapters of Black Butler, Grell could remain as a minor antagonist, but since Undertaker is already in the spotlight it’s more likely she’ll continue to work to stop him. She could side with Ciel and Sebastian, but Grell barely seems to remember who Ciel is, while he still responds like a traumatized person whenever he sees her:

Clearly some things would need to change in the story before they could form an alliance. Ciel, never a forgiving person, would have to get used to working with his aunt’s killer. Toboso acknowledges that Ciel and Grell’s relationship so far is not normalized. One thing that could help is to develop Grell’s relationship with Angelina further. In a series of posts on her Twitter from January 2018 (first, second, third), Toboso explains that because the writing on the Jack the Ripper arc was rushed, she hadn’t figured out the details of Grell and Angelina’s relationship but popular fanon convinced her that they were friends. Hopefully in the future this can be explored in the manga itself!

I would also like to see more of Grell’s relationship with her workplace as we learn about the grim reapers. She is stronger than William but lets him mess with her, why? Is he also indebted to her in the manga? Why do William, Ronald, and Othello have so much faith in her? How does she really feel about her job, when she ran away from it? As a side note, I know this fandom believes Grell and the other grim reapers will get backstories but the servant characters are only getting backstories because Toboso planned for them ten years ago, while Grell might not have originally been intended to be redeemed.

Ido want to see her fight Undertaker again, because they have some parallels that would make their interactions very interesting to me: they are both grim reaper deserters but she is weaker than him and got caught. They both became emotionally invested in individual humans. His style is austere, and he doesn’t use an electric scythe, while Grell is a modern, career-oriented reaper with flashy fashion tastes. He is incredibly old, while she seems to have deserted when she was still young (reminder that her death list was still just a stack of paper when she ran away ↴↴↴). Both have a body count.

Maybe then she can finally get her manga cover?

This is a really good assessment of Grelle’s development, so far, in the series.

I’d like to note a few things, though:

  • In the anime, when Grelle first returns to work, the temporary death scythe is two bonsai shears, but yes that’s closer to William’s averruncator than Grelle’s usual chainsaw.
  • Othello doesn’t say Grelle wasn’t a reaper 70 years ago, he asks isn’t it trueGrellewas a reaper 70 years ago. And you show above that Yana-san was directly involved with the “Story of Will the Reaper” OVA. Of course, we know there’s an issue with the way that OVA was drawn. It has Thomas’ record saying he was born in 1775 and dying in 1779. There’s no way Thomas was only 5 years old. Maybe add 20 years to that? But that would still have Grelle in reaper training before 1819, around the time that Undertaker destroyed half of HQ. Therefore, it seems to me that Othello is questioning why Grelle doesn’t recall 136649. And that goes back to my posts where I ponder what really happened as part of Grelle’s three months of suspension. Were Grelle’s cinematic records messed with?
  • Grelle might have been holding those paper clipped files for Madam Red because it was more information than what would usually be in the agenda. We don’t really know whether Grelle already had that Chanel agenda. Then again, it could be that Grelle simply hadn’t bought that agenda yet. It’s really no clear indication of Grelle’s age as a reaper.

I’m also expecting Grelle to have another major run-in with Undertaker, ever since Othello sent that dove back to HQ to request backup.

But ever since Othello asked Grelle for protection in the human realm, I’ve pondered Grelle’s chances for survival. My Mother3 theory has each of the reapers needing to either die or return to their realm. The Magypsies don’t get much character development in the game, but some of them assess their lot in life before they disappear for good.

I don’t expect Grelle to get a volume cover until it’s a volume that has a major showdown between either Grelle and Sebastian or Grelle and Undertaker. I still say it could ultimately end with Grelle’s death, particularly if Othello somehow gets in the way or causes Grelle distraction. If Grelle dies protecting Othello, that might be the most character development we get, since Grelle had previously shown a very selfish personality. It would finally force Grelle to wear Madam Red’s shoes, so to speak, not just her coat.

Jane has a Mother2parallel

Earlier today, I said Jane might parallel a precursor to Li'l Ms. Marshmallow, and yes. She does.

@princess-adrienne reminded me I needed to look into Electra, Pokey Minch’s maid while he’s working as a consultant for Geldegarde Monotoli, and that’s in Mother2, aka EarthBound. Technically, she’s Monotoli’s maid, working in Monotoli Building, in Fourside, but she serves Pokey whenever he’s visiting.

Porky Minchi (Pokey Minch in the EarthBound localization) is “upgraded” to King Porky in Mother3, and Electra is the human precursor to Li'l Ms. Marshmallow. By the events of Mother3, Electra would have died, simply because so much time has passed. Porky doesn’t die when he becomes King Porky, simply because the prototype of Dr. Andonuts’ time machine keeps him alive, even though he’s aged considerably due to a fault in the prototype. While he’s “king”, King Porky keeps a robot as a maid, and she seems to be based on Electra, possibly as a reminder of her to him.

So, Jane is Electra’s parallel, as she’s working as a soldier/maid for Chris Heathfield at Heathfield Manor, in Yorkshire. Electra is the human precursor to Li'l Ms. Marshmallow (a machine), while Jane is like a (presumably) human precursor to Layla (an advanced bizarre doll). When Jane’s hair is down, you can see how she’s an older looking version of Layla but with a shorter braid. Forget age; the shorter braid makes Jane a precursor, as an adversary, and we encounter Jane first anyway, so she’s a precursor time-wise, too.

Annie (and to a lesser degree Ran-Mao) becomes the main parallel to Paula in this situation, even though I’ve already got other parallels to Paula in other Black Butlersituations.

I have to choose Annie over Ran-Mao for Paula because Ran-Mao’s drugs wear off quickly, whereas Annie has to be disconnected from the machinery and woken up.

According to the fandom wiki, Paula’s weakness is paralysis.

That leaves Mey-Rin and Ran-Mao as the parallels to Ness and Jeff here, since they are the ones infiltrating the joint to set the maids free, just like Ness and Jeff set Paula free. Ness is generally going to be a stand-in for Lucas when it’s a Mother2 parallel instead of Mother3, and whoever Ness is with is typically a stand-in for whoever is with Lucas at the time (which is usually Boney, the dog)… so Mey-Rin serves as a stand-in for our earl while Ran-Mao serves as a stand-in for Sebastian. Notice that Ran-Mao and Jeff Andonuts (Dr. Andonuts’ son) have the same short, straight, shiny, and very evenly-cut bangs. (His sprites in the game show his hair to be shiny.)

This makes Geldegarde Monotoli (new mayor of Fourside) the parallel to Chris Heathfield (baron of Heathfield Manor), which makes perfect sense, because Monotoli keeps Paula as a hostage, just like Heathfield essentially keeps all those maids (particularly Annie) as hostages in his basement.

Here’s Electra (for Jane), Monotoli (for Heathfield), and Paula (for Annie):

He’snot a strong enemy to begin with, but when Monotoli is released from Giygas’ influence, he’s very physically weak, and that reminds me of Ran-Mao beating Heathfield up before she’s added to the other maids plus all the released maids (minus Ran-Mao) beating him up again as soon as he shows up after their release.

Afterwards, Monotoli relinquishes the town of Fourside back to the previous mayor and becomes a low-level worker again. Heathfield is still a baron, of course, but Polaris reports that the guy was arrested.

Jane gets one last major parallel to Electra because, as @princess-adrienne pointed out, Electra specifically says she doesn’t really care about what Pokey Minch is doing – she’s not entirely swayed by his goals – but she will fight on behalf of whichever side seems stronger. And that’s very similar to Jane’s approach to working for Heathfield and the Aurora Society’s operations there, which she swears she doesn’t know much about. Neither Electra nor Jane is especially loyal to her respective employer/master.

“Keep your face to the sunshine and you cannot see the shadows. It’s what sunflowers do."    - Helen Keller

I had the greatest need to have a hug couple of months ago, I was all alone in my apartment and I couldn’t meet my friends, siblings or parents at all because of the corona isolation. I felt so lonely and sad back then so I decided to do some sketching (I really had to put my feelings on paper) and voilà!

I’m so happy with the result even though I almost lost my mind while colouring the flowers (I really dislike doing backgrounds, especially repetitive ones). So that’s why it took so long to get this art piece done but I think it was definitely worth it! And I’m feeling a lot better now too : 3

(Hello, I just want to let you know that I’m transparent.)

Here is my entry for Smash-New-Universe  ’s (Deviantart) collaboration project named “The Ultimate Concert of Life” ! More information about the project can be found here!

This was such a fun project to do but oh boy, there were some difficulties too! I’m not very happy with the Lucas’ pose here (It looks way too stiff for my taste) but I like how the colours turned out! I wanted to try something different and dynamic with the pose but it seems I still have a long way to go..  I should’ve just changed the pose entirely and start from the scratch but I was just too stubborn to give up *sigh*. Well, practice makes perfect and I let it go this time.

I had a huge need to draw Lucas with a keytar since it’s his combo instrument in Mother 3. And for the outfit, I was just thinking something very stereotypical 80’s stuff (I was also listening to one very famous Finnish 80’s band while drawing this so that “might” have inspired me a little).

And the keytar Lucas is playing here is heavily inspired from a Roland AX-Synth. I think the design of that instrument is so elegant and cool so I wanted to sketch something in a similar manner.

 “…And I’m home.”

________________________________________

What does a heart encrusted in rust see
in a still and soundless world?
Looking for someone who looks like they can say, “I’ll see you again”,
I only end up repeating this over and over again.

Once you take notice, there’s
the silhouette of someone’s back, crying all alone
In a heartrending,
lonesome place.

I want to remain with my hand entwined in yours

How many times have I felt
the warmth here in this very place?
Even if I’ve only mistaken being by your side, I don’t mind
The sound of our tears and the colour of our sighs
Now ascertain where we are now

The distraction of an everyday routine
is something that I want, I want to see, even in the future

When I think how my voice, full of false bravado, has cracked
I find myself surrendering to the dream world
When I hold my knees close and
cast my gaze downward
Suddenly I feel like I’m going to crumble

At this rate, at this rate,
The distant exit we dash toward together
is still within reach. Now, let us
smile and gaze into each other

Your guileless, innocent face
bears a jumble and medley of feelings
Even when you’ve lost your own way, you remain too kind

I call out your name again and again
Even if the future is uncertain
It pains me just to think of what I can’t let go
I’m right here
I’m right here
You know there is always a place for you to return to, here

And that’ll never change
With these feelings that remain.

                                           (Puella Magi Madoka Magica)

(Original/Official art can be found below, I don’t own the official artwork and this specific art piece was made just for fun.)

Just a stupid idea I decided to go through with after all.. I was drawing something else entirely but then I heard this song on my old anime playlist; my hand just slipped and I couldn’t stop myself from drawing this Madoka Magica parody (or tragedy perhaps in this case). I think I have just crossed that very subtle line of cringe when it comes to this art piece but I liked the final result quite a lot myself so I wanted to share it with you guys :’3

I just think that the lyrics of this song are so amazingly suitable with Lucas and Claus as well, and they all (Sayaka and Kyoko too) end up in pretty painful situations in the end of their character arcs.

Most of the times I get my inspiration from music and especially the mood that the music brings around me. In this case though, it was the lyrics and the setting of that ending picture that led me into this project, I consciously copied the scene from the original picture pretty straightforwardly because I wanted to get the same aesthetics in to my art, however, I still wanted to bring my own style with it as well so it’s recognizable that the picture is done with my art pattern but the composition is copied from somewhere else on purpose, if that makes any sense.

With this said, I don’t own any rights to the original art piece that can be found below or the song and its lyrics, I don’t get any kind of financial benefit from this, I just wanted to have some fun : ) . The original art is from the episode 9 of Puella Magi Madoka Magica series with Sayaka’s and Kyoko’s character song “And I’m home”.

“Claus & Lucas, the Sunflower Twins”

A slightly older sketch I decided to colour for the celebration of my mum’s birthday. She always loves the drawings I make despite her lack of knowledge about the series I usually draw fan art from. I haven’t drawn or coloured anything for her in ages so now I thought I definitely should, since I’ve had quite a lot free time due the current situation of the world.

I still hate drawing backgrounds though, so I must apologise the boring, blurred mess I created this time.. Well, this was meant to be a bit more simple piece after all, so I guess it’s good enough.

(And I know that the stripes on Claus’ shirt are more blueish tinted, cyan coloured to be exact, but I just didn’t feel to correct the mistake.)

I was feeling very sad and anxious a little while ago, so I ended up drawing this. I feel much better now though, so there’s no need to worry!

Right now I’m just experiencing frustration because this didn’t end up the way I actually imagined it to be and I wasted so much time on trying different things and nothing seemed to please me in the end.. and I actually started to dislike this at some point, mostly because I know that I can do better than this.

Also, I think this is not a surprise for any of you, but I really do have hard feelings for drawing backgrounds. I know it’s necessary if you want to improve your artwork and skills but I just find background drawing remarkably tiresome. But for now, case closed.

I’ve been listening to an Icelandic artist called Björk lately, that’s where the title and inspiration to this work comes from.

Since Love is a very important theme in the Mother games/Earthbound, I found it quite fitting to draw Lucas again. He’s such a precious baby boy.
