Thank you @uww_prc & @uwwimpact for having me on your campus the past few days visit a class, screen my documentary, and kick-off National #ComingOutDay 2017. I’ve never visited a campus queer center as rad as yours! Thank you for treating me like family and letting me share my coming out story with you all ✨ TL;DR version of my coming out day speech I born intersex, didn’t know until 18, came out as intersex to gf, came out as queer to fam & friends, then came out as intersex to fam friends and world, and recently came out as non-binary, and now coming out as a supporter of #Blacklivesmatter, #Palestine, #Undocumented Folks, #SanctuaryforAll, #NoBordersNoWalls on stolen land, and that 45 is a White Supremacist & coming out is a process like love and it’s never finished ◾️Have a great time at Homecoming you all! thank you again for having me (all photos except selfies were taken and provided by the amazing and uber talented @simplyramz!) .

Cheers Queers

On National Coming Out Day  I want to honor the bravery of my middle school students who come out in one of the hardest times in our lives. Thank you for teaching me so much about gender in its infinite varieties! I also want to honor all of the older folks who forged this path for me and my students. Let’s never let them put us back in that closet.

On this #NationalComingOutDay, as two lifelong lesbians, @yvonnekawamura and I want to come out of the closet with more queer news.
____
About a year ago, we decided to start trying to make a baby.  It was challenging, stressful, expensive and alienating almost every step of the way.  Choosing a donor and a method was hard enough, but going through our savings to pay for sperm and inseminations was even harder.  After trying IUI a couple times and out of money, we were unsure of what to do.

____
At this point, Yvonne’s entire extended family, led by her Uncle, joined together to raise the funds so we could pursue our dream of creating our own family.  We were overwhelmed with gratitude that we could now push on with this crazy journey. Since I was 40 at this point, and with 5-11% changes of success per IUI we decided to ramp up to IVF now that we had the resources to pursue this technology.

____
Let me clear, IVF is no f**cking joke.  Getting 4 shots a day of hormones, daily blood draws & vaginal ultrasounds, was miserable. Yvonne came with me to every single appointment. She also overcame her fear of needles after I almost fainted giving myself the first shot in the tummy.  My stomach became increasingly bruised and swollen and my arms were black and blue too. We felt sad for so many of the women also in IVF hell, who were mostly alone and unsupported during the marathon of daily monitoring. One of the worst moments for me was when I was not allowed to have Yvonne with me during the embryo transfer after having suffered a traumatic egg retrieval. (Story for another day.) But she was there waiting for me, and despite my dismay we were successful.

____
Then came the waiting.  14 days, crossed out on a piece of paper, until we could find out whether I was pregnant.   Then on the evening of Pride, the night before our official pregnancy test with the doctor, we bought 2 home pregnancy kits.  We didn’t know what to expect.  We were  both were almost certain it couldn’t possibly have worked.

____
But literally 5 seconds after we put the test sticks down, it became very real. We were pregnant.

It was 1995. My mom took me out to breakfast after she met my first real girlfriend. She asked me if I was maybe gay. I cried. She said, “oh honey, I think I’ve always known.” She said she was happy for me. She said my girlfriend was a cutie. She held my hand and told me that my friends were going to be fine with it because they were awesome and alternative and loving (all true). And she seemed genuinely relieved to know the whole truth of me.

I had already told my besties. To the one, the only pushback I got was when I couched my coming out (in fear) in a “but don’t worry - I’m not attracted to you” and they ALL said, “ok, but what’s wrong with me?” Because they were and are the best. My sister was like “ok drama queen, like duh” (I think I told her first) and then my mom marched with GLSEN that same year at our First Pride.

I went back and forth, in and out of the closet a few times, namely when I was trying to be a “Good Catholic”. And each time it was my momma who reminded me who I was and how wonderful that was.

My mom wasn’t a perfect person but she loved her gay daughter in this moments so perfectly.

Happy #NationalComingOutDay beautiful people! Never forget that we don’t have to live like someone else to help ensure that they remain happy, healthy, safe and treated fairly. To those living at the intersections of race, gender and sexual orientation- I see you and I love you. I will fight for you. ❤️

I don’t know what to say except, in spite of all the progress we’ve made, as a community, we’ve got a long way to go. As for me, being gay, I’m just glad to wake up everyday and like what I see…for the most part. ✌ #andrewisdoing #nationalcomingoutday #seattlegay #keithharing #proudandout #keepitreal #justbeingme #gaydude #humanbeing #ilovemen #gayaf #blackgayman #strongwill #iamworthy #iamwhoiam
