The one-flowered broomrape (Orobanche uniflora) - I have been trying to find this plant for over 5 years. People would tell me where to look but try as I might, this little parasite has remained elusive. Yesterday I had given up trying to find this species for yet another year and that is exactly when I found it. Moral of the story: sometimes you have to stop trying to see certain plants before you finally get to see them.

I now know why they call these insects “hanging thieves.” After they catch their prey, these flies perch by one or two of their legs and using the rest to manipulate the meal. Their larvae live in the soil, feeding on grubs. No insect is safe with these predators around.

Some observations of material left over from the nature journaling workshop. The workshop was a lot of fun! We didn’t take a close look at our acorns, so I decided to do that yesterday. Maybe this is Quercus engelmannii, the Engelmann oak. #botany #plants #nature #art #science #scientificillustration #botanicalillustration #lineart #penandink #markerart #inkdrawing #linedrawing #illustration #plantart #CalBG #nativeplants #naturejournaling

Today I took a break from the home studio to work with some fresh material of this cute new species of Malacothamnus (bush mallow) that I’m illustrating for @keirmorse, a PhD candidate at @californiabotanicgarden. Keir is working to untangle the knots of Malacothamnus taxonomy- a daunting task that puts the challenge of drawing them into perspective! The mass of hairs covering nearly every surface and the complex geometry of the flowering structures make it difficult to render accurate and legible illustrations. I’m so grateful to have live plants to work with (and for the excuse to take a walk in the garden ). Using only pressed and dried specimens and photos would have had me cursing these lovely plants. But thanks to the garden’s conservation effort and Keir’s expansion of the Malacothamnus species in the living collection, I can shower them with the love they deserve.

The “pipe” of Aristolochia californica, known as Dutchman’s pipevine, is made up of fused seals rather than petals. The corolla is entirely absent! As if these flowers weren’t strange enough already. Flies are thought to pollinate these smelly flowers.

Opening up an Arisolochia flower to find what’s inside is an adventure! The stamens are fused to the style and stigma, forming one combined ♂/♀ structure: the gynostemium. In Aristolochia californica (CA snakeroot or pipevine), the anthers are in three pairs of two and the stigmatic surface is three lobed. I think it’s both kinda cute and kinda creepy, especially with that strange, musty smell.

I love the strange and fascinating flowers of Aristolochia californica (California snakeroot, pipevine, or birthwort). ‘Aristo’ is from the Greek for best or noblest and 'lochia’ for childbirth. I’ve seen various explanations for the name: some species resemble the correct fetal position in the womb and/or some species have been used medicinally in childbirth. A. californica certainly provide excellent birthing grounds for western swallowtail butterflies - the larvae of Battus philenor hirsuta feed on these plants. I didn’t spot any caterpillars, but I’m still holding out hope!

I wasn’t quite able to capture the color of Dendromecon harfordii with my markers, but this will do for now. I adore their combination of brilliant yellow flowers and blue-green foliage. Maybe I’ll try again with watercolors… though I wouldn’t mind if the color eludes me again and again. I could spend an eternity basking in their hues.

During these surreal and scary times, I’ve been experiencing an intense creative block. With this drawing of Dendromecon harfordii, I feel like I’ve finally clawed my way out. Dendromecon was one of the first genera native to the California Floristic Province that I learned when I moved here. Circling back to these plants, I’m struck by the parallel to these two moments in my life: I work to keep going in times of great change, face to the wind of the unknown. Right now, that wind blows fierce and harsh, but Dendromecon blooms with the same brilliance. Plants will always be the lighthouse that guides me to safe anchorage. To honor that in my art is a tremendous blessing.

Found a gorgeous Pinus coulteri (big cone pine) cone today- this will be excellent subject matter for the upcoming nature journaling workshop that Marty Purdy and I will be teaching here @rsabg on March 14th. I’m really looking forward to it- there’s already a ton of blooming and buzzing activity going on in the garden to provide us plenty of excellent subject matter. The workshop will be tons of fun! Link to sign up for our workshop and other great classes at that garden here and on my profile: https://www.rsabg.org/events-programs/classes #Pinus #Pinaceae #pine #pinecone #nativeplants #botany #botanize #plants #nature #art #science #scientificillustration #botanicalillustration #illustration #plantart #sketch #naturejournal #journal #naturejournaling #rsabg #garden #workshop #events (at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden) https://www.instagram.com/p/B9GAq4iA2gH/?igshid=f5ag925yp428

Fun at work last week creating Romneya coulteri (Matilija poppy) flower arrangements with paper flowers and live foliage. These were used as center pieces for a celebration of our many fantastic volunteers here at @rsabg - this place would be impoverished without them! The stunning beauty of Romneya coulteri is a perfect reflection of the vibrancy the volunteers bring to their work. If you are able, I highly recommend volunteering at your local botanic garden or arboretum! #RomneyaCoulteri #Romneya #Matilijapoppy #poppies #poppy #flowers #wildflowers #crafts #papercrafts #paperflowers #flowerarrangments #botanicalgarden #botanicgarden #rsabg #volunteer #celebrate #botany #botanize #plants #nativeplants (at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden)

Ants stealing a nectar snack from a Fremontodendron at the gardens! I didn’t see a label for this tree (and don’t have a Jepson handy ), so it could well be any of the three species in the genus: F. californicum, F. decumbens, or F. mexicanum. Known as California flannelbush, F. californicum grows in a diverse range of habitats in California, Arizona, and Baja California. F. decumbens and F. mexicanum have much narrower ranges- they’re endemic to the Sierra Nevada foothills and the Peninsular Ranges, respectively, and are federally listed as endangered (F. decumbens is listed as F. californicum ssp. decumbens in ECOS). These stunning trees are cultivated as ornamentals, so this particular plant could even be a hybrid. #Malvaceae #Fremontodendron #flannelbush #nativeplants #plantnatives #california #wildflowers #floweringtrees #ornamentalplants #ranchosantaanabotanicgarden #botanicgarden #botanicalgarden #ants #nectar #orange #yellow (at Rancho Santa Ana Botanic Garden)
