Photographing women is a difficult task for a male photographer traveling in more conservative countries. I can either try and sneakily take a candid or ask directly. Not wanting to disrespect anyone, I usually choose the latter option. I am often refused however, the reason being that they are Muslim or have overprotective husbands. Despite this, I continue to ask, the worst thing they can say is no.
In Rawanduz I again approached a group of women sitting in the shade. The elderly women quickly said no, saying that they were Muslim. I nearby woman called me over and allowed me to photograph her. She then led me to her family graveyard, plucked a flower and laid against the gravestone. I can only assume that the grave is that of her husband, this possibly a reason as to why she agreed to be photographed. Her tenderness and hospitality humbled me. I thanked her repeatedly for her openness. Before I left she handed me the flower and said goodbye. Seeing her was definitely a touching and moving experience, which shows a country still in the process of healing.

Seki is a historic town in southern Gifu Prefecture that is famous around the world for its production of high-quality knives and blades. The small town in the middle of Japan was a center of sword making during the Muromachi era (1338-1573), with over 300 swordsmiths working in Seki, producing legendary swords, and earning the town the cool nickname, “The City of Blades.”

Remembering the March 11, 2011, Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami today. I had the chance in the summer of 2017 to visit one of the towns that was almost completely wiped out by the disaster. I enjoyed speaking to the locals and seeing firsthand the recovery process. The small fishing town of Onagawa in Miyagi Prefecture is a shining light of the strong will and never give up attitude of the Japanese people.

March 3 is Hina Matsuri in Japan. This traditional Japanese event is also known as the Doll’s Festival or Girl’s Day and is celebrated across the country. Beautiful “hina” dolls are displayed on red carpet platforms in homes of families with daughters to pray for their health, future, growth, and prosperity. Here is an interesting set I found recently in Gujo Hachiman.

Checked out some samurai sword museums in Seki this morning to do a bit of research for my next article. Seki in southern Gifu Prefecture is known as the “City of Blades” and was a center for sword making during the Muromachi era (1338-1573).

We did our hatsumode (first shrine visit of the new year) today at Inaba Jinja, a Shinto shrine in Gifu City. This historic shrine has a history of over 1,900 years and is a popular spot for hatsumode.

One of the first things that you see upon arrival at Magome-juku in Gifu Prefecture is this old water wheel. This well-preserved Edo period (1603-1868) post town is like taking a step back in time.

Kagami Mochi is another traditional Japanese New Year’s decoration. It consists of two round mochi topped with a daidai (bitter orange). The two mochi represent the past year and the year ahead with the daidai, which means “generations” in Japanese representing the continuation of a family from one generation to the next. This is my Kagami Mochi from 2021.

Shimekazari is a traditional Japanese New Year’s decoration usually hung on the front door to keep bad spirits away as well as inviting the toshigami or Shinto deity to visit. They are made out of sacred Shinto rice straw rope, pine twigs and carefully crafted zigzag-shaped paper strips called shide. This is my shimekazari to welcome in 2022.

I spent the day walking the Nakasendo in the Kiso Valley researching another project for a client. The Nakasendo was an old stone road that once connected Edo (modern-day Tokyo) to Kyoto during the Edo period (1603-1868). We started in Magome-juku in Gifu and walked to Tsumago-juku in Nagano and then on to Nagiso with lots of little interesting spots along the way.

Back in the heyday of indigo dyeing during the Edo Period (1603-1868) there were 17 different family run indigo dye businesses in Gujo Hachiman. Today only one remains, Watanabe Somemono Traditional Indigo Dye Shop. The current master craftsman, Watanabe-san is the 15th generation of his family to take up the business. With a history of over 400 years, this family run shop still painstakingly hand makes every item using traditional techniques and materials to produce top quality products.

Spent the day in the historic castle town of Gujo Hachiman in Gifu Prefecture researching a project for a client. It was a very productive trip as I got to interview the head of the Gujo Odori Preservation Association and the President of the Watanabe Somemono Traditional Indigo Dye Shop. Heading back to Gifu City now on the highway bus
