I’ve finally managed to locate an image of the „pipe organ“ lighting system for the stage of the Palais Garnier, which is mentioned in the Leroux novel. It was nicknamed the „pipe organ“ because of the multitude of pipes that transported the gas to the stage lights. With this centralized system, the stage lights could be turned on or off, both gradually and suddenly depending on the requirements of the staging. It was also possible to plunge the entire stage into darkness, or just a part of it.

Erik, resident pipe organ virtuoso, used this control system to switch off the lights so that he could abduct Christine from the stage during the performance of „Faust“. The niche which was reserved for the lighting chief is also mentioned, although not pictured.

The „pipe organ“ is mentioned in Chapter 21.

Opéra Garnier - Grand Staircase Details

And because tumblr only allows ten pictures per post apparently, here are a few more details from the Grand Staircase area:

The statue of Pythia, the priestess of the temple of Apollo, is located on the lower level under the stairs.

The lyres are everywhere,

The entrance to the lowest level of the auditorium.

A mask, my first unfeeling scrap of clothing…

I love the gothic aspect of this candelabra.

John GallianoforChristian Dior, Haute Couture, Spring Summer Collection, 1998.

Tribute to Marchesa Luisa Casati.

Not long after his arrival at Christian Dior, JohnGalliano invited us all to Paris’s Opera Garnier, where he staged what was probably his most lavish spectacle ever for the house on its grand marble steps. With the Marchesa Luisa Casati for a muse, the clothes looked straight out of an early 20th-century salon or ball. There were backless velvet gowns in Art Nouveau prints, opera coats with deep mink trim, lace sheaths and skirtsuits, and rose-strewn picture hats. And for the finale? A shower of pastel-colored tissue-paper confetti cut into the shape of tiny butterflies. Pure magic. (x)

I haven’t posted in forever, whoops So yep, this is fanart for the opera Faust. The @royaloperahouse posted one of their productions of it on YouTube and that got me in the mood :,)

I was inspired to draw my version of Christine Daaé performing the leading lady role of Marguerite, with two randos (looking like Raoul and the Phantom, not intentionally I promise) as Faust and Mephistopheles, during the final act of the opera. If you wanna know more, definitely check out the Jewel aria and the final trio represented here, I think they sound pretty awesome but you know, it’s opera so you do you

Enough of my rambling, I hope you enjoy the art!
