May Day in L.A.

Thousands of people took to the streets in the annual May Day marches in downtown Los Angeles and Boyle Heights on Sunday. Their cause ranged from immigration reform and politics to police accountability and an end to racism.

And the different movements shared one thing in common: all were offended by something Donald Trump had said.

We are tired of our bodies constantly being on the line of fire and being targeted by the police.

It’s time to rise up, empower ourselves and each other, and shut it down.

We will no longer be the targets of the police. Young people all over the country are fighting against police brutality/violence. We are fighting against police brutality/violence.

JUSTICE FOR CLINTON ALLEN

In 2013, Clinton was in an apartment complex when Dallas officer Clark Staller confronted him for a domestic disturbance allegation. Police claim that the two got into a fight in which the officer tried to taser Clinton twice, and when that failed to stop him, shot him 7 times. However, at least four witnesses contradict that story, and say that Clinton was following the officer’s orders. Officer Staller also has a record that casts doubt on the credibility of his account; a year before, he had received a 20-day suspension for being untruthful to a supervisor and entering inaccurate information on a police report, among other things. JUSTICE FOR ABELINO CORDOVA-CUEVAS

In 2016, Abelino (28) was allegedly driving erratically when Stockton officers Matthew Garlick and Lucas Woodward initiated a traffic stop. Abelino ran from his vehicle and fought with the officers, who used physical force and a stun gun while taking him into custody. When he was being handcuffed, they noticed he was unconscious. Emergency medical personnel performed CPR and took him to a hospital, where he later died. The autopsy indicated that the cause of death was “mechanical asphyxiation”. The case was initially marked a homicide by the pathologist, then an accident by the coroner, and changed back to a homicide 2 years later upon further attention to the case. Yet, no charges were filed against the involved officers. (CA / Stockton)

JUSTICE FOR DARRELL BANKS

On January 4th, 2013, Darrell Banks was mistaken as an armed suspect that the Philadelphia Police Department was after. He had just left a family member’s birthday party when officers Jeffrey McMahon and Montanez chased him into an alley. Police claim that Darrell had pointed an object towards the two officers and so Officer McMahon shot twice and injured his left side. However, Officer McMahon said he saw Darrell holding a black object but never saw him hold or point a weapon at them. The black object was later discovered to be his phone, showing that Darrell was unarmed. A couple hours later, Darrell died from his injuries. (Philadelphia, Pennsylvania)

JUSTICE FOR DEAUNDRE PHILLIPS

In 2017, Deaundre Phillips was in a friend’s car outside an Atlanta police annex, waiting for the friend picking up documents inside. Nearby plainclothes police officers assumed the odor of marijuana was emanating from their car. Deaundre tried to flee when officers attempted to enter the car, possibly thinking he was getting carjacked. Then, an officer shot and killed Deaundre on the scene. Deaundre was 24 years old. JUSTICE FOR TANISHA ANDERSON

In 2014, Tanisha was at home when officers arrived on reports that she had been “disturbing the peace.” Tanisha was known to have issues with mental illness and was prescribed medication for bipolar disorder and schizophrenia. Though police allege that Tanisha suddenly went limp after resisting being escorted and handcuffed, her family disputes this. As witnesses to the situation, they state that they saw an officer use a takedown move to force Tanisha onto the pavement and then place his knee on her back. Tanisha became unresponsive, and was left lying on the ground for 20 minutes until an ambulance arrived. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. The county coroner’s office later ruled her death a homicide by asphyxiation, supporting the family’s account. (Cleveland, OH)

JUSTICE FOR JOSHUA WAYNE HARVEY

In 2018, Joshua was behaving erratically in public. Officers confronted him on the street and tried to handcuff him, and he ran towards a bank, ending up breaking a glass door.

Officers tased him 25 times over the course of three minutes, and they refused to remove the taser leads even after handcuffing him. In body cam footage he can be heard pleading with the officers , and he eventually lost consciousness. He never woke up again — he died in a hospital several days later. (Tulsa, OK)

Justice for Eric Rivera

In 2017, 20-year-old Eric Rivera was walking down the sidewalk with a green plastic toy water gun when he was confronted by Los Angeles police officers, who were investigating a call about a man carrying a gun. Within 11 seconds of sighting him, they opened fire and shot 11 rounds, fatally wounding Eric. Their car, which they had forgotten to put into park, then ran him over. There are no known charges, and the LA Police Commission determined the police officers were justified in their actions. (Los Angeles, CA)

Well I’m just shocked! Very shocked!

THEY DIDNT FUCKING TELL THE JURORS THEY COULD CHARGE THE OFFICERS WITH MURDER. THIS IS A FUCKING KANGAROO COURT.

Kentucky Attorney General Daniel Cameron only recommended a potential charge of “wanton endangerment”. Homicide charges were never even entertained. The attorneys representing Breonna Taylor’s family say that Cameron “clearly failed to present a comprehensive case that supported justice for Breonna.”

An update from today, 9/30/20, is that Attorney General Cameron has requested a one-week delay in the release of the grand jury recordings. He has been given until noon on Friday.

Justice for Norman Cooper

In 2015, Norman Cooper was at his parents’ home with his brother Nathan, when he began acting erratically under the influence of drugs. Nathan called 911 in hopes of getting Norman help. When officers arrived, they deemed Norman uncooperative and tasered him nine times, shooting a 50,000-volt current through his body for nearly a minute total. Nathan witnessed Norman face-down on the floor, handcuffed and gasping for air before becoming motionless. A whole fifteen minutes went by before any attempt at CPR was made. Eventually, officers called an ambulance and Norman was pronounced dead at the scene. (San Antonio, TX)

Justice for Albert Joseph DavisIn 2015, Albert Joseph Davis was at an apartment complex when a fight

Justice for Albert Joseph Davis

In 2015, Albert Joseph Davis was at an apartment complex when a fight broke out. Police claim that Albert was one of the involved individuals, but family members say that the fight occurred before Albert arrived on the scene, and an officer told him that he could leave. Police further claim that Albert put up a violent fight, leading Officer Kelvin Vidro to use a taser, and then a gun when that was not effective. Family members object to this – the medical examiner’s report said there were no taser marks on Albert’s body, and he had been shot at a distance. Albert was unarmed, and was heading home; he was shot only a block away from his house. Despite the police’s insistence that it was a violent struggle, Officer Vidro had no injuries, which casts substantial doubt on their narrative. It is unconscionable that no action has been taken in Albert Joseph Davis’s case, and that the media has only reported the police’s version of the story. Officer Kelvin Vidro is still employed today.

Justice for Dijon Kizzee

On August 31st, 2020, Dijon was riding a bike when he was stopped for an unspecified “bicycle code violation.” Dijon tried to run away on foot while carrying a bundle of clothes and was ultimately shot multiple times by police after allegedly punching a deputy in his escape. A gun reportedly fell out of the bundle of clothing Dijon dropped. There are varying accounts of the timeline of the incident: the Los Angeles Times reported that police said Dijon punched the deputy after a short chase, and dropped the bundle of clothes in the process; an Open Source Intelligence article reports that Dijon panicked and punched a deputy before running away, and dropped the bundle of clothes while running. Police claim the shooting was justified because Dijon was carrying a gun, but at no point did Dijon ever try to use it. Given that he had just dropped the gun among a pile of clothes, he was unarmed when he was shot.

JUSTICE FOR TRAYFORD PELLERIN

On Aug 25, 2020, Trayford Pellerin was in a parking lot of a gas station when multiple police officers confronted him. They were reportedly following up on a report about a “disturbance involving a person armed with a knife.” Trayford did have a knife, but he didn’t use it to threaten the police officers. Instead, he simply turned and walked away. Officers followed him on foot for almost half a mile to another gas station to arrest him, and even tried to taser him, but he continued to ignore them. When Trayford tried to enter the convenience store of another gas station, a group of roughly 6 officers approached him and opened fire, firing at least 10 shots. Trayford died on the scene.

This was an egregious and ridiculous use of force by the police. Not only did they shoot and kill a man who was simply walking away from them, they opened fire in front of a public store. Someone else could have gotten hurt because of their preemptive violence, as in the case of Melyda Corado. The police of Louisiana have also displayed a clear racial bias; the Southern Poverty Law Center reported that in 2016, black adults comprised only 30.6% of Louisiana’s adult population, but are 53.7% of adults who were arrested and 67.5% of adults in prison. Black adults are also 4.3 times as likely as white adults to be serving a felony prison sentence in Louisiana.

It is hard to believe that Trayford Pellerin would have been killed so brutally if he were white. Just earlier this month on Aug 5, a white man named Donald Guidry was similarly in possession of a knife and led Lafayette law enforcement on a chase for over an hour in a stolen car. A SWAT team was called when Donald barricaded himself in the car, but they were able to get him to take him into custody without injuring him. Meanwhile, Trayford was shot egregiously in public in flagrant disregard of the sanctity of life and public safety. This is unacceptable and unconscionable, and the offending officers must be named and charged.
