1960’s gay rights champion Dick Leitsch died on June 22, 2018. We’ll be bringing you a full episode about Dick and his contributions to the movement during Season Four. In the meantime, we’ve produced this farewell episode to introduce you to Dick, who was a one-of-a-kind, out-and-proud, fearless leader at a time when few people dared to risk all to carry the ball forward in the fight against police repression and society’s condemnation. Today the German government issued a postage stamp in honor of #MagnusHirschfeld. In 1897, Hirschfeld founded the first gay rights organization in the world in Germany. This year marks the 150th anniversary of Hirschfeld’s birth and 2019 will mark the centennial of the founding of his Institute of Sexual Research.

On this day in 1946, film historian, activist, and co-founder of @actupny and @GLAAD was born. In a 1988 interview with #MakingGayHistory’s Eric Marcus, Vito said, “I want to be around to … tell the world what happened so that people will realize what we all went through. Because I think our lives have been devalued. These are brave courageous, beautiful people who are dying.” Vito Russo died of complications from AIDS on November 7, 1990. Happy birthday to Frida Kahlo The legendary Mexican artist would have been 111 today. Her work has inspired generations of artists. Frida occasionally wore men’s clothing and was proudly bisexual — despite the world being hostile to LGBTQ people in the early 20th century. : #NickolasMuray The first portrait was taken by Frida’s father, Guillermo Kahlo, in 1926.

#DrawingPride for the month of June!
Day 28: #Lipstick
I art directed & designed this illustration by the awesome @tanaford.designs #TanaFord for #ServingPride, the Queer History Dinner Party Handbook. It’s from the chapter that talks about the stifling, repressive era between the 1930s and the 1960s. Queer people were demonized and shamed, terrorized by authorities, and often depicted as a threat to the American way of life.

Day 23: #Unity
I had the honor of art directing and coloring this illustration for #ServingPride drawn by the amazing @bixby_baron “Out In Public” illustrates the ways queer people from the early 1900s would find one another through codes and signals.

From Serving Pride: “The first queer subcultures arose among working class people who, unlike elites, did not have space to socialize in their homes. Instead, they found privacy in public: Saloons, street corners, rooftops. Sound familiar?

Then, as now, there was no single queer community, only a multiplicity of queer spaces and networks following the contours of a country divided by race, sex, and class.

These queer networks helped fuel bohemian movements throughout the 1920s, from the Harlem Renaissance to Hollywood.”

Here’s a slightly better look at my bonkers little 18th century suit. I will share some closeups of all the silly embroidery soon! The buttons are all hand embellished. A tiny detail but worth it for the extra panache!
I wanted to be Julie D’Aubigny but absolutely ended up as a dusty romantic vampire instead. I need a little court sword to compete the look. Part of the fun of making this was stumbling onto the fabric for the coat in an upholstery shop in Florida while I was visiting for a family funeral. My Great Aunt always loved an exuberant project and part of me feels like she handed me this material because it’s perfect. We’ll be back to regularly scheduled I Do Declare content soon!
