“One thing that’s come up a lot in our sesions lately is how I struggle with how judgey our queer community can be. I feel like there is this cancer on progressiveness, and I find it unsettling how quickly millennial queers can condemn other queers for not being as progressive as they are. It’s like people get shut down for saying the wrong thing before they have a chance to explain themselves. We didn’t come into this world knowing everything. We were all blank slates and learned as we grew.
It’s like we no longer know how to have open dialogue with each other. You either get it or you don’t, and if you don’t you’re condemned and cast out of the community. There are so many double standards within our community. We hate it when conservatives shove their ideals down our throats and yet we do it to each other.
Through therapy and lots of practice, I am learning to speak my truth, to articulate myself in ways that will be received constructively. “I’ve known that I love girls since I was six, maybe even younger. I wrote poetry for a blonde, curly haired girl who reminded me of the princesses in the Irish fairy tales that my mother would read to me before bed. She crumpled up the paper and threw it in the trash before going to collect her snack. The longer I knew of and denied my own lesbianism, the more it came out in my art. I wrote a high fantasy short fiction collection throughout my entire high school career and drew pictures to go along with the story. I never showed anyone my work, especially my mother. The whole book was about lesbians who died for their love, lesbians who were beaten and struggled in silence as their want consumed them. Did you know that Boston, WBZ Helicopter Traffic Reporter, and BumbleBee Radio Founder & DJ, Kristen Eck and I went to high school together?!!? We were even friends and in overlapping friend groups!! Though neither of us had any idea that the other was trans.
We aren’t even the only trans people I know who are alums of our high school!!!!
I swear, Barnstable High School has something in it’s water….

Here’s a press photo I took of my old friend and Activist Powerhouse, Mason Dunn; speaking at the Boston City Hall Pride Flag raising to kick off Pride Week in Boston. I believe this was the year we got Trans Public Accommodations passed. I was essentially proud as both a photographer and activist to have gotten this photo of Mason giving a passionate speech, with Governor Baker, who signed the law with a little fanfare as possible, in the background!
(Still and all, thanks Gov. Baker! You might not have been excited to sign the law, but you did it! Which is a damn sight better than the horrible anti-trans laws some other governors are actively trying to pass. I’ll take quiet allyship over vocal hostility any day!)
