Saturnalia

The sinister aspect of Saturn; the winter solstice; the death of the old year and birth of the new, dies natalis solis invicti, the birthday of the unconquerable sun; the passage from chaos to cosmos; the suspension of time.

The dead return during the twelve nights of the duration of Saturnalia.

It is also the time of the sacrifice of the old king, or his scapegoat, as waning fertility, and instigating the enthronement of the new king as virility.

The twelve days of chaos symbolize the patter of the coming months of the year.

The period of chaos is governed by the Lord of Misrule, or the King of the Bean and the Queen of the Pea.

Transvestism is a feature of the time of chaos in Saturnalia, orgies carnivals, etc. and signifies a form of return to chaos.

Babylon held the twelve days of duel between Chaos and Cosmos; in Christianity these are the Twelve Days of Christmas.

A giveaway for Saturnalia!

Saturnalia was the Ancient Roman mid-December festival of feasting, gift-giving, and wild partying, when ordinary Romans turned social norms upside down and revelled in pandemonium.

Saturnalia features in Beauty Secrets of The Martyrs, my novella of magic, makeup, crypts, and clownfish. I have three signed copies to give away this December, to lend a little pandemonium to your mid-winter festivities.

On this special day, I thought I would allow myself a couple of lines to be soppy.

☘ THANK YOU EVER SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT.

☘ I have been living from my passion for a few years, now.
And despite some months being incredibly tough, to be honest, I couldn’t dream of a better life. One I couldn’t even have dared imagined living, really.

☘ So “merci beaucoup” for allowing me to craft magick for you, for trusting me with creating or imagining your dream piece(s) for and with you, for sharing my work, taking the time to leave encouraging comments, write messages and more.

Pictured are some of the pieces I crafted before the Winter celebrations.
A little glimpse at the way I photograph every single piece I craft.
Since each piece is unique, I send a preview photo to all the customers.

I wish you all a cosy end of the year.

how do yall celebrate saturnalia ? i know its a little early to be thinking about it but its my first year celebrating it so i want to start planning early

Saturnalia is a “be with my people” holiday for me. It’s taken different shapes over the years – saving up to treat all my college friends to a meal out, choosing one present for one friend each day, making a full 7 days of presents for someone who had a shit year, pelting people with baked goods from afar. This year it’ll probably be baking for my local crew and spreading a gift of charity on each of the 7 days, since I’ve not had time to whip up any gifts.

The key here for me is that in all of these situations, the recipients knew it was Saturnalia and actively chose to celebrate with me, regardless of their own religious affiliations. It’s the only holiday of my calendar when I welcome outside participation, which is a fun change, and I’m immensely thankful.

As for the specific holidays within the week, I typically only do my, err, ‘simple-form’ ritual ala temple dedication anniversaries. That said, I’ve been really wanting to do more Gallo-Roman stuff on the Eponalia in particular, but haven’t been able to bring it all together quite yet.

It’s not a ‘deep’ holiday for me, the way the Parentalia and Vestalia are, but it’s significantly more active than what I do for the majority of the year’s Ludi.

I made a few patterns inspired by traditions celebrated in the month of december. These will be printed on silky fabric and sold as Furoshiki. The goat pattern is based off of the Scandinavian Christmas tradition of Yule, which comes from a pagan festival celebrating Odin. The heads were inspired by Saturnalia. It celebrates the mythological god Saturn and it was a time of equality, lights, gift giving and madness.
