Quite a night at the Member Preview for the “Winslow Homer: Crosscurrents" exhibit. His work has such a tight nature focus, from powerful seascapes in oil to lush tranquil tropical watercolors. A beautiful way to preview this work. Also took the opportunity to view the update to the Costume Institute American Lexicon of Fashion. The new Virgil Abloh dress addition is a great synergistic link to the “Figures of Speech” exhibition focused on his work at the Brooklyn Museum this summer.

On Friday night we got to go to see @americanothemusical via our friend @westinhicks (Thank you!). Definitely an interesting story and the whole team and cast have poured their heart into the production. The new musical ¡Americano! tells the true story of Tony Valdovinos.

Fun night catching a preview at The Paris Theater of Judd Apatow’s new movie “ The Bubble” before it premieres on Netflix on Friday. He was by far the best speaker we’ve heard in person at these events. The movie recap is: Sneaking out. Hooking up. Melting down. Spent an uniquely amazing and educational evening at the Japan Society’s presentation of “Waves Across Time: Traditional Dance and Music of Okinawa” Per their site: “Commemorating the 50th anniversary of Okinawa’s return to Japan after the U.S.’s post-WWII occupation, a group of the islands’ most exquisite dancers will perform a diverse repertoire of Okinawan traditional performing arts accompanied by live music. As specially selected by the young artistic director of the National Theatre Okinawa Michihiko Kakazu, the versatile artists will perform highlights from the traditional repertoire of kumiodori, a noh-inspired theater form developed during the period when the archipelago was an independent kingdom called Ryukyu (15th-19th centuries). The program also features popular folk dances (zo odori) with traditional ensemble music.” We enjoyed a lecture beforehand and a small reception after. Went to see The Power of the Dog at the Paris Theater tonight. Afterwards there was a discussion director Jane
Campion, cinematographer Ari Wegner, and producer Tanya Seghatchian. I have to admit. I didn’t like the movie. Personally I felt it was too obvious and the themes were too overt. Not sure if that’s the adaptation or the source material. And a drone shot does not a movie make. But it was good to hear from the creators. I’ll be interested to see how it does at the Oscars.
