Space cave explorer for February’s SimpleCG challenge! Since one of the prompts this month was Animal Crossing I simply had to participate.
This time I decided to play around with Substance Painter and Unity to try out how PBR could be used for really simplified models and texturing styles. I did not have enough time to try out everything I would have liked, but I still think this workflow looks promising!
We have gained a lot of subscribers lately so first to all those who are new, HELLO! And welcome! Each month here I post a CG challenge. Every month has a different theme and this month I drew a theme from a hat. You can find out morehere. Everyone is welcome to participate just remember to use the hashtag #simplecg.
I made this over twich this week for this month’s simple cg.
I think I’m gonna keep doing these “themes from a hat”. For this month’s challenge, the words are “Sci-fi, Caves, and animal crossing”. You can interpret that in any way you like. I combined the sci-fi and caves part into a fallout type universe and put it through the filter of animal crossing esthetic. The wrench is just a reference to another favorite game series. Good luck you guys and remember to tag your submissions with #simplecg
Also as a side note: WE ARE NOW OVER 10,000 SUBSCRIBERS!!! This is really cool you guys I never dreamed that this blog would reach this point. Thank you for making this happen you guys!!
This tutorial has been requested a lot! And so it is here!
This is a new format that I am trying out to deliver quick and simple tutorials, so I could really use your feedback! Please let me know if this was helpful or if anything was unclear. I’m going to try and do more of these in the future so let me know what subjects you would like me to cover! Please message me or write a comment with your suggestions and questions!
Side note for Mobil users! The photos have captions that for some reason don’t show up on Mobil so make sure you check it out on your desktop computer! Post link
Just noticed that I forgot to post this! It’s been sitting in draft for ages.
A suuper long time ago @simplecg had a “plant friend” challenge, and I did some concept art of a little plant fairy trapped in its home of amber. When Sketchfab introduced refraction support I found an excuse to bring the piece to completion. :P

My entry for @simplecg‘s February Theme-from-a-hat challenge: Sci-Fi + Caves + Animal Crossing. I made a little astro-dude inspired by SpaceX’s spacesuit with AC proportions, and rigged it to use Unreal’s skeleton so I get a buncha animations for free! Then I made some low-poly mushrooms, rocks, a cave, and then painted the cave floor AC-style. Artstationpage with details.
Oh, don’t tell me SpaceX is not science fiction… I mean, it basically is to me. :O
