To Stooge or not to Stooge? That seems to have been the question that faced the Three Stooges when, on a crest of TV-inspired popularity, they began making feature-length movies in the late-1950s/early-1960s. Especially with the 1961 film Snow White and the Three Stooges, which I consider in my newest Grand Old Movies post. In a seemingly child-friendly movie, stressing fairy tales, wholesome romance, and ice skating (! -the film was a vehicle for the 1960 Olympic-skating-gold medalist Carol Heiss), how would the Stooges’ brand of anarchic humor (slaps, pokes, knocks, insults, etc.,) work out? Stooge fans debate the cinematic results to this day. You can read my own contribution to the discussion here. Fellow featherbrains and knuckleheads always welcome.

Twirly Snow White! I started this drawing ages ago, and finally got the focus to finish the linework on it yesterday. I’m super pleased with her face. (And yes, I know I hid the hand, but shhhhhh. Trust me, I tried.) More art coming soon!

While the promo for Red Shoes And The Seven Dwarves is highly inappropriate and discourages people from giving it a chance, the movie itself is actually really, really good: a message that is so important but rarely emphasized, and is portrayed very well in this (not preaching but not in-the-background either).
Often in movies the main male is considered “unattractive” yet he still ends up finding love, which is a great message. However, the main female / his love interest is always very attractive - she may be awkward, or not very popular, but she is always beautiful. Implying guys should be accepted regardless of how they look, but women can only be loved if they look good - they can “be themselves”, shy or confident, girly or tough, they can be nerdy, they can act however they want - as long as they are “attractive”. Not such a great message. This movie really flips the script and emphasizes how badly society is focused on appearance instead of what matters most: personality.
Overall it is a very sweet story with a lovely ending (the cute end credits make the message stand out even more), it really plays around with the usual fairytale stereotypes (what a prince / princess / witch should look and act like), and throws in a good dash of reality.
The first Protesting Princess series was inspired by the Women’s March of 2017. This series will always mean a lot to me for so many reasons. As the second series completes here for #womensmarch #2020 it reminds me that so much can change but the need for heroines will always remain!

I love the new, strong, motivated, powerful women of Disney found in this series. Whether they be dreamers or voyagers or queens or still just finding themselves they are so completely women and so completely powerful. #dreambigprincess
