Inktober Day #21 is Cassandra from Disney’s Hercules the Animated Series. Cassandra is a classic one for me as she was one of the first darkly-inclined characters I saw as child. I just enjoyed her sarcastic, dry-witted personality and she had a stylish Grecian aesthetic as well.

The thing I appreciated about her was that even though she was created with dark personality in mind, she was still shown to be low-key positive and supportive of Hercules and to a lesser extent, Icarus which was a breath of fresh air. Especially because in an episode of the show, we do get exposed to a more stereotypical Gothic/Dark type character named Electra and while I loved her design, I really didn’t like her personality because she was every negative stereotype of a Darkly-Inclined or Gothic person rolled into one character and it made me appreciate Cassandra even more.

Anyway, I really need to re-watch the show because I haven’t seen it in years but it was so satisfying to draw her because she was someone I wanted to do some fan art for. :)

Inktober Day #20 is Mandy from the Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Oh man Mandy, she is just something else lol Snarky, cynical, and doesn’t seem to have a care in the world attitude despite looking like an innocent girl, I’m pretty sure she surprised us all when we first saw her. Normally I’m not into characters who have an attitude just for the sake of it but in Mandy’s case, it’s actually quite endearing for the show she’s in and it didn’t bother me at all. I mean I guess if you hang around someone like Billy for so long, you’d begin to lose some patience though it’s good that she at least gets on with Grim despite her taking advantage of him a lot of the time.

I do have to point out though that Mandy is not a Goth character, I only say this because I see so many people label her as such just because she has a cynical personality and I’m sorry but having a cynical personality does not make one Goth. Just thought I’d speak up on that.

Anyway, Mandy is easily a darkly-inclined character icon and it was so fun drawing her. I’ll have to get around to drawing her with Billy & Grim in the near future. :)

Inktober Day #18 is Claire from the web-cartoon The Summoning. The Summoning was a debut animated short hosted by Frederator that is available to watch on YouTube that featured a young cat witch and her little brother who go on a little quest to find an ingredient for her spell as she was looking to summon a demon. I have to say that I thought the cartoon was just adorable and the characters were quite likable. I was a bit skeptical at first because Claire looked like she was going to be some super edgy character but I was pleasantly surprised.

The only concern I have with this character is people looking at her and thinking she must be Goth because she’s into witchcraft and to that, Witchcraft does not mean you’re a Goth. That said, she’s another adorable darkly-inclined character to add to the group! I hope that this cartoon gets a green-light because it was actually pretty good. :) If you haven’t watched it, I highly recommend it and it is still available on YouTube :D

Inktober Day #17 is Lucy Loud from Loud House. I’ve only seen a small handful of episodes of Loud House but from what I’ve seen, the show is cute and probably one of the better post 2010 cartoons to come out as it reminds me of cartoons from like the early 2000s and I’ll definitely have to check out more episodes in the future. Anyway, people kept raving on and on about Lucy Loud and so I looked into her. Design-wise, she was pretty interesting but to be blunt, she is not a Goth. After watching a clip of her best moments and in one segment, a reporter (I think?) asks her what her favorite music genre is and she replied with “Death Metal”, that pretty much said it all.

It’s a bummer because I was thinking they would’ve taken a page from South Park and say “Goth rock” or at the very least, “Post-Punk” but alas, her character was another missed opportunity. That said, while she’s not “Goth”, she’s another Darkly-Inclined character who has definitely become another icon so that’s cool I guess.  Anyway, drawing her was interesting and I know that technically her hair is supposed to cover both of her eyes but I just didn’t like how it looked in my style lol

Inktober Day #16 is Laetitia Bowers from the Nickelodeon animated series, As Told By Ginger. As Told

Inktober Day #16 is Laetitia Bowers from the Nickelodeon animated series, As Told By Ginger. As Told By Ginger is a weird one for me because I still remember when I first saw the show, I thought it was one of the most ugliest looking shows from an art perspective I had ever seen. But fast forward 10 years and I gave the show another chance and ended really enjoying it. Anyway, there was an episode that featured a Darkly-Inclined girl named Laetitia who was a new student and found her first day at school wasn’t going so well since a lot of the popular girls were spreading rumors about her and her father what with them believing her mortician father did things like murdered his wife and embalmed a corpse who was still alive. And considering how on her first day to school, she had a plastic skull with her, it only made people even more suspicious. Obviously all of these rumors were not true and the main character Ginger and her friends befriend her and they all get along very well.

I was so sad that Laetitia only appeared in that one episode because considering how well she got along with Ginger and her friends, she would’ve joined their friend circle. She was just so down-to-earth, sweet, and chill and I was so upset they didn’t make her a recurring, regular character. Just another missed opportunity characters (Seems to happen a lot with these kinds of characters doesn’t it?) Anyway, she was quite fun to draw. :)

Inktober Day #15 of Darkly-Inclined characters Inktober is Malaria from The Grim Adventures of Billy

Inktober Day #15 of Darkly-Inclined characters Inktober is Malaria from The Grim Adventures of Billy & Mandy. Malaria is a bit of a mixed character for me as while I wouldn’t call her a “Goth "character since they didn’t give her any Goth music references, she definitely was another lovable dark character because despite her being afraid of who Grim truly was (the Grim Reaper which was understandable), you could see she really did like things dark and eerie (hanging out in cemeteries and not being afraid of bats despite one smacking right into her face lol).

I wish she could’ve been a recurring character in the show. She could’ve been a friend for Grim when he wasn’t hanging out with Billy & Mandy (when they were at school) because while she was initially scared of him being the real Grim Reaper, she could’ve gotten to know him more and not be so afraid of him and became friends. Nonetheless, she was fun to draw. :)

Inktober Day #14 of Darkly-Inclined characters is Andrea from Daria. I love the cartoon and still kick myself for not watching it sooner but anyway Andrea… She was a pretty underused characters to be honest as she was only a seen a small handful of times and it’s such a shame because it would’ve been cool if she interacted more with Daria and Jane as I feel they would’ve synced well together.

As far as Andrea’s “Goth” cred, it’s a shame they didn’t play any background music for her because it seems like the creator of the show must’ve known a little about the actual subculture considering Andrea’s Siouxsie Sioux type makeup. I’d like to think they would’ve gotten Goth music correct if they played some for her but alas, it was a missed opportunity. That said, while Andrea is not the most elaborate design, I still rather enjoyed drawing her. :)

Inktober Day #13 of Darkly-Inclined characters is Kylie Griffin from the animated spinoff series of GhostBusters, Extreme Ghostbusters. I honestly didn’t know of this show when I was a kid and didn’t learn of it till about 2009 and even then, I still hadn’t watched it. I ended up watching a few episodes the day I drew the character just so I could get a feel for her character as while I had seen pictures of her, I didn’t know what kind of personality she had.

I gotta say, I feel like I maybe would’ve been into the show as a kid had I watched it. Anyway from what I saw of Kylie, she’s actually pretty cool and was quite the interesting character. However her voice surprised me as for some reason, I thought she was gonna be voiced by Cree Summer and was very surprised to see she was voiced by Tara Strong LOL. Anyway, she was a lot of fun to draw!

Inktober Day #11 of Darkly-Inclined characters is Debbie from American Dad. Debbie is a pretty underrated character in the show and it’s a shame she’s not a daily recurring character with Steve even if they could’ve just been friends since they broke up so many times lol.

I was also pleasantly surprised that in the episode where Steve and his friends are trying to escape their school and run into the Goth group that Debbie is a part of, they actually played a Joy Division song, it was such a pleasant surprise as I was initially thinking they were going to play some Emo or Metal type music which always happens with these “Goth” characters and obviously, it’s just false since those are not Goth music.

So the fact they actually got it right was just awesome and it made me like Debbie even more. Hopefully we see more of her in later episodes. :)

Next up in the Inktober Challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is Ingrid from Disney’s Fillmore! Fillmore was a show I didn’t really watch all that much as it came out when I got into watching more cartoons on Cartoon Network at the time. I caught a few episodes and only remembered a little bit of it but I remember thinking Ingrid had such a cool design. There’s not a whole lot I can say as I haven’t seen the show in a long while and I’ll need to give it a watch sometime later but I really enjoyed drawing her.  :)

Inktober Day #9 of Darkly-Inclined characters is the hilarious Henrietta from the Goth kids group in South Park. Henrietta is just freaking hilarious and she’s easily a big fan favorite when it comes to animated Gothic characters. She along with the other Goth kids have so many funny and memorable quotes but the best thing about them is that Trey Parker and Matt Stone actually know what Goth music is as in the episode where the Goth kids burn down Hot Topic, their theme song actually sounds Goth/Post-Punk which was just a total treat to the ears.

Anyway, Henrietta was so fun to draw, I loved drawing her teased up hair. I was originally gonna draw the whole group but  I didn’t wanna overload myself but I’ll definitely draw them all together in the future :)

Next up in the Inktober challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is Gwen from the Total Drama series. I still remember when Total Drama Island was being hyped up for it’s debut and thinking how stupid it was gonna be and while it was pretty stupid, I actually enjoyed it quite a bit and I naturally took a liking to the token Gothic girl Gwen. Again, I wouldn’t consider her a “Goth” because of the lack of implication of her liking or listening to Goth music but still, she was quite the memorable one and I really liked her down to earth, sensible personality.

It’s unfortunate that her character got ruined in the later seasons where she went from sensible to annoying but I’ll always love the way she was originally portrayed in the first season Total Drama Island. I’ve been wanting to draw her for awhile now and this was the perfect opportunity to do it

Next up in the Inktober challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is the underrated Joan of Arc from the one season wonder animated series Clone High that came out in 2002. I still remember when I first watched Clone High back in 2012 and immediately stopped because I wasn’t a fan of the fast-paced pacing it had. But 2 years later, I gave it another try and I actually got pretty into it. And of course, I took a liking to the “Gothic” character Joan. I put “Gothic” in quotes because she honestly comes across more of an artsy girl rather than a Gothic one. Nonetheless, she was still darkly-inclined and I just had to include her. It’s really too bad that the show only had one season as it ended on a cliffhanger of all things like a certain other show. -_- Anyway, it was fun drawing her even though she doesn’t have an intricate type design

Next up in the Inktober challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is the first animated Gothic girl who paved the way for Gothic-type characters who came after, Lydia Deetz from the Beetlejuice animated series from 1989. Truth be told, I never watched the series as a kid, I remember catching a bit of an episode but never actually watched the series. That said, I did watch a few of the episodes last Halloween and I adored her so much and I can see why people loved her so much, I became an instant fan. :)

Next up in the Inktober challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is Shareena Wickett from Detention. Detention was a animated series that came out in 1999 and ran on Kids’ WB. Shareena Wickett was the protagonist of the show and was a darkly-inclined 6th grader who loved Gothic horror books and also tried doing a seance in one episode. She was another early Gothic type character I saw as a kid and I thought she was adorable. Unfortunately the show only had one season and I would recommend watching it but the show is hard to find though if you want to give it a try, there are two episodes on YouTube if you’re curious.  :)

Inktober Day #4 - Rogue

Next up in the Inktober challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is Rogue from X-Men Evolution. Rogue is easily a classic for me as she was one of the first Gothic looking characters I saw in a cartoon. I loved her design and her tough yet sensitive and thoughtful personality. It was quite different from the original spunky southern lass she originally was portrayed as in the original X-Men comics and 90s Animated series but as far as spinoffs go, I liked what they did with her for Evolution and I like both depictions of the character.

Next up for the Inktober challenge of Darkly Inclined characters is the amusing but underrated Creepy Susie from The Oblongs who was originally from her own book series “Creepy Susie and 13 Other Tragic Tales for Troubled Children”.

Truth be told I’ve only seen a few snippets from the book but I got to see her in The Oblongs and I thought she was humorous. She’s a pretty underrated character as it seems not many people have heard of her but I highly recommend checking out the Oblongs and giving the book a look if you’re into positively dark humor. :)

While Creepy Susie is not really a “Goth” in my opinion, she’s definitely darkly-inclined / Gothic-inclined and she’s easily one of the most lovable around. <3
