#societal norms

LIVE

The idea of working five days a week with two day weekends and a few weeks of holiday each year has become ingrained in society. But it wasn’t always the case, and it won’t be in the future. Could people eventually take three and even four day weekends? Certainly. Will job-sharing increase? I think so. People will need to be paid the same or even more for working less time, so they can afford more leisure time. That’s going to be a difficult balancing act to get right, but it can be done. If it works for individuals and works for businesses, everyone would want to spend more time with their loved ones, more time exploring their passions, more time seeing the world outside of an office and more time getting healthy and fit.

IS: onna demo otoko demo nai sei" by Rokuhana Chiyo. I finally got my hands on the entire series! I truly recommend this manga. I don’t think there’s a better published comic with an intersex protagonist in the entire world (but I would love to be proven wrong, so please send tips!) The first volume has a few shorter stories, but in the second volume it starts being about Haru and his life and experiences. It’s a slice-of-life comic, with school-life, hobbies and relationships, and it tackles societal alienation and norms, with intersex people in focus, but also in other ways. It has been a tremendous influence on me both personally and politically. Sadly there’s no official translation as far as I know, but most of it is available and translated by fans online.

“I turned 30 this year, and let me tell you, that milestone falls on you not like a stone, but like a hard, crushing boulder.

Like so many my age, I’m feeling the weight of Western Society’s expectations. If it were an entity, it would breathe down your neck 'Time’s up! You’ve existed on this planet for 3 decades now. Gotta buy a house, think about getting married and having kids.’”
