Never Too Old,

Back in 2012, I spent a Sunday morning in a park in Ebisu. After spending time watching families and children play, I noticed an older fellow pretending to be an airplane come through the park. I can’t say I really learned anything from that, but for some reason it made quite an impression on me that day. Still does. Not sure why.

Ten years ago today, but a Sunday rather than Saturday. Where is he now, I wonder.

I think she loves me. Every morning at the station, she stares at me. She won’t take her eyes off of me. I try not to encourage her, but she never gives up. I think I am starting to feel the same about her. As I stand there waiting for the train, I cannot help but imagine the things we could do together if only one of us had the courage to make the first move.

E-Wan

The old ramen shop near Yukigayaotsuka where local workers would often have lunch. The building had seen its better days when I first saw it in 2006 or 2007, but the owner lived upstairs so like many of these old shops, it was also a home. I haven’t been there since covid began and I wonder if it is still around.

Coffee Break at Roppongi

Ten years ago.

While I was taking a photo of this scene a young woman approached me and asked what I was photographing. I always hate these sort of things, because about 99% of the time I cannot really explain it, nor do I want to. But this was different for young women hardly ever approach me so directly to ask about it. Plus, her interest was not just the standard question, for I noticed a titanium Contax G2 around her neck. It turned out that she was a photography student at the university where I taught technical writing at the time. She took out a box of black and white prints and told me that she was taking part in an exhibition to open in the area.

I later went to the exhibition, but afterward never saw her again. Every time I look at this photo, I think of her. And that mint Contax G2 around her neck.
