There was a brief hissing noise and a whiff of sulfur to Alsander’s left, further into the alley, as a doorway opened in what had been the solid stone of a wall.
With a flicker of red light, a cloaked figure stepped out into the alley, turned, and stared at him. “Harrow—!” Then she was there in front of him, her hood dropping about her shoulders, patting his chest as if to be sure he was solid and real, raising a soft hand to touch his face. “You’re alive, it’s you!”
He caught her hand gently. “Risha… Don’t, please— Not like that— I can’t.“
“Harrow— Nine Hells, what happened to you??” said Risha, tears filling her huge dark eyes. She was a succubus, and in her current form of a pale human woman with ample curves and sheets of blue-black hair; no horns, wings, or tail in evidence now. “I couldn’t find you!! I’ve been looking everywhere, and all I could get was that you hadn’t left this plane, but you were just gone! Where were you? Who did this to you??”
Every year as the days get hotter, Tristan spends less time outside and is a little lethargic inside. Very reasonable, right? Every other creature in Florida does the same.
We’ve been trying to figure out why he produces such an enormous amunt of (not infected) goop from his eyes, and dealing with severe skin reactions to some biting insect. We tried Cytopoint a month ago.
It’s getting hotter out, still, but every day now Tristan is having a *better* day. More playful outside and inside, spending more time outside, more into mischief every day. In this video, he’s been patiently trying to teach Gwyn how to play “keep-away” properly (pick up the toy, mouth the toy, pretend to drop it, pick it up, push it away from you; Gwyn is having a little trouble with pushing it far enough away when she volleys it back).
WhenKovu arrives, Tristan is so thrilled he wants to tell him loudly All The Things. Since this involves 25 lb Tristan yelling excitedly in 12-lb Kovu’s face, we need to manage it so Kovu doesn’t get steamrollered. But through the visit Tristan and Kovu still have plenty of time for mutual adoration.
Quiet, gentle Tristan gets enthused and worked up as he barks and rawrs at Kovu. Sensible, chill Kovu gets worked up as he barks and rawrs at Tristan. Both of them wagging nonstop.
It was an important conversation, whatever it was about. If they were human I think they would have been waving their arms demonstratively; they were already pacing around the room as they excitedly discussed it.
AKovu came to visit us! Both Spaniels absolutely adored having him with us. The resident thumb-monkeys had a great time playing with the kissy cuddly wriggler, and visiting with Kovu’s human.
Yesterday Gwyn had a very puppy day. They’re getting increasingly infrequent, but yesterday she NEEEEEDED to Do Stuff. She kept stealing increasingly difficult items, bringing them to me so I could tell her how clever, naughty, and rotten she was. Also how proud, and swap her a treat for them.
Eventually I took the silicone hot pads she’d just been bringing me, went outside and hid them. Then I took the Spaniels out, and told them “Go find.” It was the first time we had played Go Find outside, *and* the first time I asked for them to keep going after finding one. They rocked it. They’re amazing.
By the third one she was starting to get fatigued (started towards inside instead of towards me), and I thought I had finally made a dent in the Puppy Day. As soon as we came inside (to hails of “so good! so clever! aaall dooooooone”) and sat down… she brought me a shirt.
We thought it should be relatively easy to get a picture of Kovu posing with Tristan and Gwyn. They’re chill with each other, they all have a good sit & stay, they’re all used to waiting patiently while the thumb-monkeys wave a rectangle around.
No, they were great! The difficulty turns out to be us @thelittlespanielthatcould holds a treat where they want Kovu to look; I don’t pick up a treat until I am going to give it immediately. I apparently unconsciously twitch my fingers in a “come here”-looking gesture when I say “Look” (at me); Kovu hops right up and comes to me when I do that.
So there was a lot of laughing and giving treats to good but confused spaniels, and repositioning, and a few decent pics.
Story:Jaime has been tortured by Ace and Eli, twin brothers, for nearly a decade. Jaime and Ace have a very complicated romance; he loves Ace but also deeply hates him for the seemingly endless pain, torture, and terror he’s put him through. Tristan loves Ace and Eli like they’re his sons. He wants revenge for what Jaime has done to them.
So, there’s a lot I want to change about this, but it’s time to move on. Nothing is on model. I am so rusty at gestures because I’ve been drawing almost nothing but tarot cards for the last five-odd years. I need a ton more practice to loosen up again and start doing more quality work, but this was a great start. I am going to make more OC animatics, and I can’t wait to share them with you all.

Disappearance at Sea II is the title of a short film made after Disappearance at Sea (1996). Both works take as their point of departure the story of Donald Crowhurst, an amateur yachtsman from England who joined the solo, round-the-world Sunday Times Golden Globe Race in 1968. The inexperienced (and, some might say, deceptive) Crowhurst quickly ran into difficulties, and eventually his craft, Teignmouth Electron, was found several hundred miles from the coast of Britain, abandoned. Filmed in anamorphic format at St. Abb’s Head on the east coast of Scotland, Disappearance at Sea uses the light and lenses of a lighthouse and its surrounding landscape to suggestive narrative ends.
The title Disappearance at Sea II—and especially the subtitle, Voyage de Guérison, which Dean added in her accompanying text—refer to the medieval legend of Tristan and Isolde’s misguided, love-potion-induced affair. Tristan, unlike Crowhurst, embraced the ocean’s power: after being mortally wounded, he allowed himself to drift in a voyage de guérison, or journey of healing, to a magical island where he hoped to be cured once again by the powers of Isolde and her mother, the queen.
