sometimes I forget that comics and comic book adaptions can be good and fun Anyway y’all are sleeping on X-Men: Evolution one of the best marvel cartoons out there
I have been rewatching that show for the past consecutive three days and let me tell you all this show *mwah* exquisite I’ve read/watched some reviews and critiques on this show and yeah, a lot of it is valid, but most people write it off solely for the fact that the X-Men are teenagers. And I don’t know man, but a superhero cartoon from the early 2000s? Of course they’re gonna be teenagers! That was (and still is) theshit! Accompanied with the fact that their target audience was…well…kids, it absolutely makes sense.
What just absolutely makes the show for me, was that they did their own thing, while not completely turning a blind eye to the comics. (I know… bare minimum…but just look at the X-Men movies,,,) A lot of shows/movies take the most basic comics as a guideline and just run with it. Try and make it as edgy and “logical” as they can. Just look what they keep doing to Batman when will they stop massacring my boy??? We’re talking about superheroes here! It doesn’t have to be 100% logical! So I’m glad X-Men: Evolution doesn’t do that. It’s a very goofy and corny show with very low-stakes. But you know what? After all these big blockbuster superhero movies and tv shows we’ve had…this is honestly very refreshing.
The balance between action and slice-of-life is the perfect amount in my opinion. And it very accurately represents the hassle of being a mutant teenager in a society that doesn’t think mutants are that cool tbh Like,,, that’s what X-Men is all about! The everyday life that depicts the injustice mutants face…alongside some good-old comic book action B)
Next up in the Inktober challenge of Darkly-Inclined characters is Rogue from X-Men Evolution. Rogue is easily a classic for me as she was one of the first Gothic looking characters I saw in a cartoon. I loved her design and her tough yet sensitive and thoughtful personality. It was quite different from the original spunky southern lass she originally was portrayed as in the original X-Men comics and 90s Animated series but as far as spinoffs go, I liked what they did with her for Evolution and I like both depictions of the character.
Inktober Day #25 is Wanda Maximoff (aka the Scarlet Witch) from the X-Men Evolution. I loved the X-Men Evolution design of the Scarlet Witch though I remember when I first saw her debut episode (“Hex Factor”) as a kid, I thought she was Rogue because of her hairstyle before she cut it haha. Wanda definitely had my second favorite super-power of Probability Manipulation right behind Jean Grey’s Telekinesis power and it was always fun seeing her use her abilities on screen. Even though she was portrayed as a girl with serious daddy issues, it’s not hard to understand why considering what her father (Magneto) did to her in this series, that would scar anyone.
While she was mostly angry and angsty, she still had her moments of compassion such as when she let an emotional Kurt (Nightcrawler) take the statue of Mystique (his mother) to see if he could revert her back to normal (even though she was a mega bitch in this series lol) and she didn’t outright attack people unless they attacked her so that was nice. It’s too bad that we didn’t see Wanda interact with Rogue because I seriously believe they would’ve gotten along together. What is with these cartoons that have these Darkly-inclined characters yet don’t let them interact together?
Anyway, I had a lot of fun drawing Wanda, I’ve been wanting to draw her for years and this was as good a time as any to finally get around to it. :) —————————————————————————————————-
