I was going to cover them fully in tattoos but I got lazy, and I really wanted to animate something. I also failed to save the tattoo designs which is sad, but whatever… And… the only reason I animated this is because I couldn’t decide if I wanted Cas’s eyes to glow. Afterthis post and all its truth continues to make me despair over how Lan XiChen really had no emotional support after Guanyin Temple, I need to talk about the sheer insensitivity Lan WangJi shows Lan XiChen when he even thinksthe story about Sisi might somehow help:
[Wei WuXian,] “Lan Zhan, did you know? The one named SiSi seemed to have been a friend of Jin GuangYao’s mother’s.”
Lan WangJi, “I did not.”
Wei WuXian didn’t know if he should laugh, “I was only making a comment, not that I was really asking you. I saw it back at the Guanyin Temple, in Empathy with the ghoul woman. She looked after Jin GuangYao and his mother quite well.”
With a moment of silence, Lan WangJi replied, “Thus, Jin GuangYao let the woman go.”
Wei WuXian, “It should be the case. I was afraid ZeWu-Jun would go soft on him again, so I didn’t say everything. Even now I still don’t we should tell him.”
Lan WangJi, “If he should ask in the future, I will let him know.”

This is in part an ethical consideration because if Lan XiChen asks about Sisi then it is arguably within his right to know. Nonetheless, I can’t help finding Wangxian’s understanding of Sisi’s story as completely oblivious to Lan XiChen’s own plight, because Lan XiChen and Sisi both showed kindness toward Jin GuangYao and were both traumatically punished for it.
Even worse, Lan WangJi’s memory is really bad because Jin GuangYao didn’t let Sisi go. Just like Jin GuangYao wasn’t willing to let Lan XiChen go. Because that’s when Nie HuaiSang had to step in.
Speaking of fully respectable and tasteful anime crushes you could have if you’re not a freak here’s a longish post about Queen Hiling from Ousama Ranking which will have some tiny spoilers but that’s not a big deal because there’s gotta be 500 plot twists by now and they’re all still good ones. There were just a couple episodes out when I previously talked about this series and now 14 out of 24 have aired.
Queen Hiling was set up in her first few scenes like she was a Wicked Stepmother who just wanted her biological son to take the throne but they pull that rug out from under you by the end of that very first episode.
Queen Hiling worked hard to learn sign language entirely to connect with her deaf mute stepson, who did not like her when they met but she didn’t give up:
She went on to painstakingly teach sign language to everyone in the castle who would be regularly interacting with her stepson but she was pretty displeased that nobody had cared enough to have already done so:
Charging up her magic because her stepson got hurt:
Killing a weird monster snake that bit her stepson:
Healing the same snake because it made her stepson cry that she hurt it and also this is a setting in which healing magic painfully and/or dangerously exhausts the caster:
Showing off in anime’s #1 all time sexiest lady battle armor:
Putting all her effort into healing the same snake again after it grew 100 feet long and saved everyone from those other monsters but watch out for that guy!! He is going to try to kill everyone!

It’s just a good fucking anime and I mean I’d watch this anime if you were only going to watch one anime in your entire life.
It’s still airing so we still don’t know how many more things will become part of the family. I wonder if the rest of the monsters in the frozen dungeon will get thawed out? One or two of them have. I hope some of them get happy endings. Who has those giant eyeball stalks??? Free those.

thinking about gwen and elyan’s relationship (specifically elyan’s reasons for becoming a knight) and i’m going to make it everyone else’s problem:
when they are reunited in 3.07 and she asks where he has been for four years, especially when their father died, and he explains ‘here and there’
‘here and there’ distracting himself, distancing himself, never settling in one place and ultimately putting off the time he would see her again. not because he doesn’t want to or because he doesn’t care but because it was just all too much -
because he ‘meant to get in touch, it just never seemed like the right time’
because there never seems to be a ‘right time’ to fully confront the weight of grief, and returning to someone who carries the same burden as you can seem absolutely impossible. to confront gwen’s grief would be to confront his own, to see his own pain mirrored in her.
so circumstance (well, cenred) brings them back together and he is forced to confront what he has been struggling with this whole time
the first emotion he experiences when reunited with her is visible relief and a total overflow of love and his instinct is to throw his arms around her
(any bitterness or awkwardness completely cast aside for the moment, as he is so pleased to see her, even in the worst circumstances)
and he really realises how much he cares about her. of course he has always cared, but this brings it home
(and of course he cares about her more than he cares about himself, and he sees that she also cares about him this way, but feels like he really doesn’t deserve it - ‘you shouldn’t have come back for me’)
then he realises what she is involved in (fighting for camelot, against morgana) he realises the very real danger she is putting herself in and how brave she is but also how he could so easily lose her as well
and so becoming a knight is his way of protecting her, and of committing himself to the things she has committed herself to
but also (and more importantly) his way of saying ‘i am here, i am not leaving, you will always know where to find me, i will not hide from the things we must face together’
elyan, who could not tie himself down to one place for so long, has sworn allegiance to camelot, herhome.
and, of course, her face as she watches him become a knight of camelot:
she is so so proud of him but also so reassured. because she knows what this means. she knows that this is his way of saying what he feels he cannot say with words.
all the years of wondering ‘where have you been, elyan?’ and now he’s right here. right here, making a promise of service to arthur and to camelot which she knows is really a promise to her
