Pride month this year made we think a lot about how far we’ve come and how much more there is to be done. I got so much more to say, but I focused my thoughts to this:
I can only imagine what I would have felt if one of the characters in my favorite animated show/movie was gay. I wonder if it would have made me feel like I wasn’t as weird, wasn’t as different. I wonder if it would have helped me to come out sooner, to be truly who I am in front of other people, to feel comfortable in my own skin. I know so many gay people working in animation. Board artists, character designers, art directors, recruiters, executives. Where are we on the animated screen? Why are we good as painters, designers, storytellers, dream makers, but when it comes to being represented in our own creations, that’s too much to ask for? I’ve heard someone makes an argument that because animation mostly targets kids, it’s inappropriate to talk about sexual orientation. Kids don’t understand that. Well, the thing is that this is not about sex, this is about love. And kids understand love very well. We need our content to show kids that a boy can love a boy and a girl can love a girl, and that’s perfectly normal. Our love is not less important or less valuable than any other love. Representation is crucial. Seeing yourself on the screen from a young age can change your life. In some cases, can save your life. It’s time to make a real difference. ️✊️✊️✊️
“Falling” is about breakups. It’s about being at the point of no return, about remembering only the good moments, ignoring the problems, and not wanting to let go, even just so you can have one more moment of love.
Originally created for Loopdeloop February 2019. I’m so fortunate to have incredibly talented friends that agreed to come on board and contribute to my little indie animation. Actors: Ryan Masson and Kristin Tripe. Soundtrack: Royi Tal & Oliver Ballantyne. Extra Help: Daniel Markovich. ❤️
COOL NEWS!! My film/ music video “Nightmare in the Morning” will air on Disney XD this Saturday (3/24) around 9pm. And then 2 more times throughout the weekend 3/24 at 1:30am and 3/25 at 10pm. Catch it if you can! ❤️
I’m so excited to share the intro for the Character Animation Producers’ Show!
Apparently Walt Disney has been kept frozen for 50 years at the president’s office, and this year we brought him back to life so he could see what CalArts has become.
Thanks to all of the incredible people who worked on this! Full credit list on the Vimeo description. ❤
I’m excited to present: MY GRADUATION FILM “Mr. Carefree Butterfly”
I want to thank the incredible talents that I had the privilege to collaborate with, and everyone who supported me during this 4 year long journey at CalArts.
Recently, we’ve been spending most of the hours of the day together, and it seems like it’s not going to change. We create, we do research, watch videos on Youtube.. I sometimes find myself just staring at you. You’re bright, sharp and colorful. You’re sensitive, pen pressure sensitive. We don’t need Valentine’s Day, tonight is just another great night in front of each other. Feeling closer than ever.
In the early stages, the humans were as pushed as the monsters (like in the second picture), but in order to differentiate the two groups, we toned them down a bit. I worked closely with JoelandMarion on those.
And I’m also making a little cameo close to the end of the film:)
Jeanne D’Arc - probably the character in #Ripaille that I spent the longest time figuring out, mostly cause I also tested different design styles through her.
We wanted to make sure that the flat style can make sense when the characters do something complex in space, and even the simple turnaround above took me some thinking to figure out.
Also I’d take any opportunity to animate a pole dance (special thanks:”Pour it up” by Rihanna).
Here are some of the original character designs I made for the Annecy short #Ripaille!
The challenge was redesigning characters from medieval illustrations and creating a graphic and contemporary style that suited the overall concept of the film which was ancient meets modern.
The ones I had most fun designing (and everyone’s favorite) were the nun and the dicktree (we didn’t make up anything! Look at the references!
Our Annecy opening short film #Ripaille is now available! I co-directed this film with the amazing @marionoir, @joel-durand,@mariposa-nocturna,@yonatantaland@mairithetree at Gobelins. It was a hard but huge journey for all of us. I hope you enjoy it!
Here’s my second big project for this year! It’s an opening for Annecy Animation Festival that I’ve made with a group of talented guys from gobelins (see names+links above). I was in charge of the character design style and most character designs. More behind the scenes stuff to come soon! Enjoy #Ripaille.
I’ve just finished working on my second big project for this year (more to come) and now I can start posting some behind the scenes stuff from “Nightmare in the Morning”.
Here’s a rough animation test I’ve done in an early stage of the production. The dance style I went for was Voguing, which is a dance that evolved out of the Harlem ballroom scene in the 1980s. I learned a lot from this test and I feel like the moves in the final film are more true to the style.
Drawing these 3 in a pretty early stage of the production really helped me defining the main character. The 2nd look even made it to the final.
I drew these in a format of magazines to push the concept a little more.
It’s an androgynous character (all the characters in the films are) but I refer to her as - she. Her name can’t really be pronounced by humans but the closest would sound like: XZOÉT.
My 3rd year film at CalArts, “Nightmare in the Morning” is a music video about the way I feel in the morning. It was an honor to work with the amazing talents who created the original song for it: Song writer: Abby Lyons Singer: Natalie Perez Music production: Daniel Markovich This film would have been impossible to make without the support of the people of Gobelins, CalArts and from back home <3
