#ardhamatsyendrasana

This asana is named after the yogi Matsyendranath. The name is taken from the Sanskrit words ‘ardha’, which means half, ‘matsya’, which means fish, ‘Indra’, which stands for a king or ruler, and asana, which means posture.

This asana is also called Vakrasana. ‘Vakra’ means twisted in Sanskrit. Some other names for this asana include the Half Lord of the Fishes Pose and the Half Spinal Twist.

This is not the full variation but a journey towards it.

The yoga tradition teaches non-attachment, vairagya in Sanskrit, not so that we walk around in a state of emotional detachment devoid of expression, but instead so that we will know that our deepest sense of self exist outside the realm of things, goals and material success. By practicing releasing attachments we let go of our intense identification with the world of materiality and begin to relax and play with life in a state of joy.
