7E Guest Artist Interview - Kim Pimmel

Kim Pimmel is an artist working in a painstakingly beautiful way. All of the images you see above are created in analog with various tools. Kim utilizes stop motion photography, light, magnets, fluid dynamics and even builds custom electronics to achieve his art. After we were introduced to Kim via a mutual colleague (thanks Phil!), I decided to do a short interview.

7E: Your “compressed” series is very unique. What was the inspiration for doing analog style stop motion effects for visuals that would usually be created digitally?

As a software designer, I spend a lot of time in front of a screen, pushing pixels. While this satisfies the systemic, logical designer in me, it leaves me looking for ways to express my creativity in more playful, freeform ways.
I love analog mediums -  there’s something I find really special about the the look, feel, and imperfect nature of vinyl records, photographic film, analog synths. But I’m also heavily influenced by the abstract work of generative code artists such as Robert Hodgin and Erik Natzke. So, inspired by the analog visual effects in films such as 2001, Solaris and Flash Gordon, I started playing around with creating rich abstract visuals using everything from hand soap to ferrofluid. That was really the genesis of the Compressed series.

7E: I see you’re also an electronic musician. How does music influence your work? Also, what are some of your favorite synths and effects?

I usually start with the visuals, but very quickly the music and visuals become two parts of the same creative expression. Pacing and rhythm influence editing. Color and texture affect tone. I have to admit my lovely Juno 106 and other analog kit are gathering dust as Ableton Live fits into my busy life better.

7E: Could you describe the technical aspects involved in creating the Light Drive series?

Light Drive was a great fusion of the playful expression of analog and the powerful control of digital. Every frame of the video is a long exposure light painting. The lights used for the exposures were placed on a Technics 1200 turntable and controlled remotely using Arduinos, bluetooth modules and Processing. The lights were attached to motors and wire armatures, which I could manually tweak to adjust the shape of the light’s rotated form.  The pitch controller on the turntable let me directly control timing, while the digital pipeline was great for sequencing and motion control.
I also built a custom camera timer for my DSLR from a cannibalized Nikon wired remote, an Arduino. This gave me lots of flexibility for adjusting the timing and length of long exposure sequences.

7E Guest Artist - Ian Brill

Ian Brill’s work focuses on creating interactive installations with multi-sensory experiences. The piece “Transmission” initially caught my eye because of the integration of synthesis and generative light matrices. It uses a combination of Max/Msp and Arduino to drive the LED panels and synthesize the audio.

“I am fascinated by the idea of using technology to create an immersive agent for positive change- as a form of education, communication, meditation, contemplation, etc, in response to my experience in a culture where I feel that many people (myself including) are more familiar with taking a passive approach to their position/relationship of being immersed in technology.”

7E Guest Artist - Casey Reas

The first time I was exposed to Casey Reas’ artwork was through installation art he created for Yeasayer. I was excited to see them perform at FYF in 2012 since they had recently added Cale Parks, one of my favorite drummers, to the lineup. I was wondering who created the triangular installation on stage and much much later found out it was Casey in collaboration with Aranda\Lasch. That discovery led to another realization that I had actually been introduced to his work even earlier by using Processing, the programming environment for visual artists. Casey co-created processing with Ben Fry and it has of course also now been adapted as the default development environment for arduino.

Learning to code was a necessity to express his art. Casey’s visual work is mostly generative, always interesting and spans a wide range of mediums. Jinna would love to own one of Reas’ pattern dresses shown above. As an engineer I deeply respect an artist who has made such widespread contributions across the union of Art + Engineering. Thanks Casey for joining us on 7E.

Getting all Dr Frankenstein in here!

“Build your own shield” they said.
“It’s easy!” They said.

Somehow I managed to make it complicated!

It took me three tries to record this video!

So I soldered all the sensors and stuff for my cages and tested them.
All my distance sensors give back a value of 0 cm unless I press against the yellow wires.
Either
1) all my sensors are broken.
2) I soldered the same wire badly on 6 sensors.
3) my code is wrong.
4) the wire has a bad breadboard connection.
5) there is a weird static or other problem in my wires, which I have used without a problem many times before.
6) the way I place my sensors in the cage messes up their functionality.
7) I switched up my green and yellow wires.
8) I switched up the code for my yellow and green wires.

The list can go on for a little longer but it comes down to the fact that the problem can be anywhere and my knowledge and time is too limited..
Either way I’m gonna sleep first and check back at this problem tomorrow.

It was “9) Didn’t declare the Pinmodes so they didnt knew what to do”.

No clue why it acted the way it did tho, because I reckon they wouldnt give any feedback at all in that case. But eh..

I built my own mail notification last year. Strangely, no one of my coworkers sends me emails anymore

The London based creative laboratory Bare Conductive was invited to team up with Fabio Antinori and Alicja Pytlewska in order to develop a large-scale metaphor for the idea of breathing life into a textile skin. At the core of the interactive tapestries featured in their installation, Contours, are capacitive sensors applied to the objects’ substrates using conductive paint; these sensors react to the presence of a person in their immediate vicinity and can track their movement.

Exposure is a piece of wearable technology designed to illuminate and draw attention to the performer. It is theatrical and costume like. Designed for an on stage visual extravaganza. It is activated by a microphone sensor hidden in the hood. When a certain level of sound is detected at a close proximity the LED’s flicker on and off to create a dramatic entrance for the performer.

Happy Halloween Everyone!

Carved the pumpkins and programmed the LED matrixes myself. I’m currently just watching Over the Garden Wall with my grandma while handing out candy. Gonna sip some cider and play Call of Cthulhu once the trick-or-treaters call it a night. :3
