#autismawareness
Dear spontaneous huggers, hand grabbers, arm wrappers, hair strokers and shoulder holders,
I understand you have so much love inside you that you want to extend it to physical means and that is lovely, but I know I am speaking for a lot of people here when I say this. Please just ask first. For many neurodivergent individuals, unwanted physical contact can make us very uncomfortable and sometimes it’s difficult to tell people. Even if they’re not neurodivergent, asking before you give someone a hug is just an all round good thing to do.
Also, please please please don’t hug someone after they specifically tell you it makes them uncomfortable, contact is about expressing affection and there is nothing affectionate about making someone unhappy. There are so many other beautiful ways of expressing emotions that don’t involve touch and asking is the most simple and easy thing to do.
