There are two bird of paradise groups called sicklebills, though they are actually quite different. The first are in genus Drepanornis, and are distinct in how normal they are socially. While most birds of paradise eschew territorial norms in favor of lek mating systems, Drepanornis maintain a traditional territory like most other songbirds.
Drepanornis bruijnii is named for Alfred R Wallace’s assistant, the Dutchman Antonie Bruijn.

100 Weird Birds: Day 2
For Day 2 of my 100 Weird Birds, I picked the Western Parotia. It is a bird-of-paradise found only in the mountains of Vogelkop Indonesia and the Wandammen Peninsula of Western New Guinea. In courtship displays, the male performs a ballerina-like dance while displaying his bright feathers on his chest.

5.10.21 - Canyon sunflower (Venegasiacarpesioides) and yellow bird-of-paradise (Erythrostemongilliesii) at Fryman Canyon
watched a documentary about female birds of paradise who show up to do absolutely fuck all while the males jump through 8,000 hoops doing their little dance with their flashy feathers and then when they think they’re about to hit she just like spits in their face and ghosts

more for the flower series! i’m having a lot of fun choosing flowers for my characters… dawn gets the birds of paradise flower. she’s got a bad case of wanderlust. you can’t keep her in one place for long and she has an insatiable desire for exploration!
