Forgive me a minor deviation from our usual theme, but I found this photograph of my own great-grandfather this week - taken 1914 when he enlisted in the British Army at the age of 19, one of the first to go, and fortunate enough to come back safe.

We share a remarkable resemblance for being three generations apart - identical mouth and jawline, and my nose would have been very similar too, had I not broken it two times too many and been left with quirky asymmetry.

The grave of Major Francis Stupart of the 2nd or (Royal North British) Dragoons, more famously known as the Scots Greys.

As seen in Warriston Cemetery in Edinburgh by myself and my Wife last weekend.

Major Stupart or Lieutenant as was the position he held at Waterloo was in Cheney’s Troop at the battle in which he was also wounded. At the Museum of the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards in Edinburgh Castle you can see the pattern 1797 heavy cavalry officers’ sword wielded by Lieutenant Stupart at the great clash of 1815.

The 270th Anniversary of the Battle of Culloden

The painting included is: An Incident in the Rebellion of 1745

Circa 1745. By David Morier.

The painting which forms part of The Royal Collection and is on display at the Palace of Holyrood House depicts fighting of the 1745 Jacobite Rising. It is unsure if the painting depicts events from the Battle of Culloden itself though it has always been used to illustrate the famed battle.
