How I wish more of von Gloeden’s photographs included the name of the model, just knowing he was called Pietro makes him come alive and feel a very real person - captured for all time, handful of hanging roses and posed poised on the step, one moment in a life we know nothing else of. 1904, Italy.

Forgive me a minor deviation from our usual theme, but I found this photograph of my own great-grandfather this week - taken 1914 when he enlisted in the British Army at the age of 19, one of the first to go, and fortunate enough to come back safe.

We share a remarkable resemblance for being three generations apart - identical mouth and jawline, and my nose would have been very similar too, had I not broken it two times too many and been left with quirky asymmetry.

Body By Wisconsin” - a “dummy” in a footballer’s uniform laid out in a wicker casket with a banner below reading, “Body By Wisconsin”. Just a bit of antagonistic pre-game rivalry between Northwestern Univeristy, Illinois and Wisconsin University. Photo, c. 1920s.

Slumber Party” - a foursome of giggling teen girls taking a snapshot in their nightgowns during their slumber party antics. It looks like they have an early “self-timing” camera, the girl on the left still trying to duck into place as the image is snapped. Snapshot, c. 1910s.

THE CHICKEN LADY: Portrait photograph of Nancy Luce (1814?-1890), a farmer in Martha’s Vineyard, MA.  She achieved local fame as the eccentric “Chicken Lady” when she erected marble headstones on her farm dedicated to the memory of her beloved deceased chickens. The site became a roadside tourist attraction that she capitalized on by selling visitors photographs she had commissioned of herself holding chickens (such as this one), along with booklets of poetry she had written about them.
