A second stunning close-up portrait of the boy with the beautiful eyes by Plüschow - not the sort of photograph I would usually post here, with the emphatic religious symbolism overwhelming the scene (indeed it is titled The Christian Martyr), but look beyond the trappings of his saintly role and we see simply the beautiful face of a young man who lived over a century ago.

His portrait taken around 1900 by Guglielmo Plüschow, this young man’s sublimely beautiful strong-featured face is unforgettable. We have seen him several times before, and I have found more of his photographs to post in future, so he ought have a tag all his own; his name is sadly unknown, so I shall just collect his photographs under the boy with the beautiful eyes.

Another gorgeous portrait of Vincenzo Galdi by Plüschow, this often-repeated pose perfect to highlight his handsome profile and beautiful neck & jawline, his hair a ruffled mess of curls when let to grow longer.
Beginning his involvement with photography as a model, he went on to become a photographer in his own right, breaking all boundaries between the sensual nude and provocative erotica - see my collected examples of his work here.

What perfection! I present a minor deviation from our usual full-body academic or Arcadian nudes, to include this wonderful portrait of Pasqualino by von Gloeden - his images concentrating on the captivating faces of his subjects are a little neglected in favour of those more revealing examples, but are such striking and memorable images I am sure you shall enjoy them as much as I. With his noble profile, gorgeous eyes, and garland of rather crumpled pale roses, this young man has to be one of the most lovely amongst them.

The lovely Asrah, blessed with an enchanting face full of character and gentle humour, and a timeless masculine beauty - those deep soulful eyes! Pictured here just before the turn of the last century, when he would’ve been twenty three, twenty four - one of the last photographs von Gloeden ever took of this fine young man.

Forgive me a minor deviation from our usual theme, but I found this photograph of my own great-grandfather this week - taken 1914 when he enlisted in the British Army at the age of 19, one of the first to go, and fortunate enough to come back safe.
We share a remarkable resemblance for being three generations apart - identical mouth and jawline, and my nose would have been very similar too, had I not broken it two times too many and been left with quirky asymmetry.
