We finally make it to our new home with Amanda, but unpacking is for wimps so we decide to explore our new neighborhood! As we do, we encounter local hot dad Brian, his daughter Daisy, and THE CUTEST DOG EVER!
Time to start a new dating sim! This time, we’re playing Dream Daddy! We’re cool, hip, (and single) dad Griffin L'amour moving with our daughter Amanda to a new home!
You form the party out of normal adventurers who met in the bar, all of whom have some reason to hate the BBEG. This is something each of them needs to figure out for themselves.
Then midway through the campaign, they find out who the BBEG used to be before s/he Ascended. And then as the DM, you tell them they are all shocked by this news, and pass them all secret envelopes while explaining how all of them have a backstory with the guy that haunts them and that they don’t want to talk about. Imply that there are a wide range of relationships (sibling who went bad, bad boy at university who almost tempted them into something heinous, etc.)
However, all that done, each of them reads their secret letter and finds out independently that they were the “one” dating the BBEG. Let them come up with the ways in which they hated the relationship and broke it off (“I was the one who turned him bad, before I changed my tune” would be great, for example), but do give them a timeline for when they dated.
For at least two of the party, give them overlapping dates, and information that they were super suspicious that they were being cheated on, although they could never prove it, and that’s part of what woke them up to the bad relationship.
If you play it right, you can keep dropping hints to other types of relationships that you haven’t set up, right up until the final confrontation.
When the BBEG is ready to face a group of plucky heroes, and is shocked that they managed to gather every one of his evilgood exes in one place.
As much as I want to play Mystic Messenger’s newest route, the better part of my mind is annoyingly making a pretty convincing argument for not completely trashing my sleep schedule for the time being. So, I’m left getting my visual novel fix from other sources. Luckily, I stumbled upon one before the urge became unbearable.
Despite sounding like something I would name a fake game as a joke, Team Salvato’s Doki Doki Literature Club takes the typical slice of life school romance plots and uses its medium to make something truly memorable. While every dating sim and visual novel can be interpreted as a small, in-depth exploration of human (or human-like) nature, Doki Doki Literature Club uses its story to explore the extents of kindness and humanity, and if it can or should cross the boundaries of the narrative fourth wall, leaving players evaluating and re-evaluating their first impressions of the main characters. Before you continue on, reader, I highly suggest you experience everything DDLC has to offer before I spoil it for you. Team Salvato is offering the game for a “name your price” cost on the game’s itch.io page, as well as for free download from Steam. The first run will more than likely take around four hours to complete, but in my opinion it’s entirely worth it. One more thing: please, please heed the content warnings on the game’s page–they aren’t fucking around.
