Inspired by trackways left in volcanic ash at Prince Creek. The species depicted have unclear status at this moment in time, so let’s call them Troodon sp. and Ugrunaaluk kuukpikensis/Edmontosaurus regalis.
I started this about a month ago when I saw some illustrations of some fantasy-inspired carousel horses, and thought I’d like to try and draw some dinosaur themed ones. I was going to post this yesterday, but a friend asked me to draw a Dilophosaurus for him, so I obliged.
I started off with the herbivores/ornithischians first since they’d be easier to translate design ideas, but luckily I found examples of all kinds of animals that have been turned into fancy carousel creatures- including a Dinotopia themed set, that too my knowledge wasn’t used, but was simply on display.
The dinosaur species are on the pictures if clicked on, but if that doesn’t work, or it doesn’t display we have: Maiasaurus, Gallimimus, Pachycephalosaurus, Pachyrhinosaurus, Iguanodon, Lambeosaurus, Carnotaurus, Torvosaurus, Deltadromeus, Caudipteryx and Dilophosaurus.
Cause Prehistory isn’t just about dinosaurs, I made a poster with every ‘Dinovember Without Dinosaurs’ illustrations that I’ve been drawing during last month. Hope you like it!
Okay, don’t get me wrong here. I LOVE Jurassic Park. I love seeing their dinosaurs. But after watching Prehistoric Planet, and going back to look at this…

Notice how much healthier the second set looks? Their lips cover their teeth, they actually have fat on their bodies, their skin doesn’t wrinkle like they’re dehydrated. You can’t see every single tendon and muscle move because you aren’t supposed to. Dinosaurs are animals, not reptilian body-builders.
THIS is the kind of change I want to see in how we create realistic depictions of not only dinosaurs, but all prehistoric creatures. Paleoart has always had a huge issue with shrink-wrapping and making these animals look terrifying instead of making them look like, well, animals.

Inktober Day 24- In another dimension, where dinosaurs not only didn’t go extinct, but are alive, and intelligent, the appearance of a strange shaggy little mammal would be cause for shock and terror!
Dakosaurus looks like a type of dinosaur or plesiosaur, but it is actually one of many prehistoric crocodiles that developed fins. They reached lengths of up to 15 feet, and had an incredibly powerful bite.
Fun Fact: Irritator is related to the much larger, much more famous Spinosaurus. It is so named because paleontologists were “irritated” that the skull they acquired had been altered by fossil dealers. The sail is thought to help the animal regulate its body temperature.
*It is a common misconception that all dinosaurs lived in the combined land mass Pangaea. However, by the Cretaceous period, the continents had already drifted apart.
“The Ghost of Slumber Mountain” (1918) was written and directed by special effects wizard Willis O’Brien, who did “King Kong” years later. A 19 minute version still exists, though the two reel, 40 minute version no longer does. A common reason the film was cut down is that two-reel movies were less popular among theater owners than one reel movies, and also, there was a large, excised subplot with homosexual subtext.
