Twice now I’ve played a game called Hook Me with my followers in which I asked them to submit titles and summaries in the form of a query letter. The goal was to hook me with their summaries and/or titles. Afterwards, I gave feedback.

This round is going to be simple.

I am only asking that you submit a summary of your story in the form of a query letter (look at paragraph 2 in the example only). Look through that link and make sure you know what a query letter is before you submit. If you want to go through the traditional publishing path, you’re going to have to write a query letter one day.

RULES

• Length:Your submission cannot be longer than two messages sent through the ask feature.
• Submitting: Please do not send your summary through fan mail or through the submit feature. These submissions will be deleted. Only send through the ask feature.
• Content: Send only the summary and the genre. Put the genre at the beginning or end of the message in all caps. I will provide a list of abbreviations under the read more so that you can have more space for your submission.
• No Anonymous: Do not send your question anonymously. If you are one of the winners, I will need a way to contact you. Anonymous submissions cannot win.
• Nickname: I post the URLs of the winners. If you are okay with me sharing your tumblr, include a nickname (make it short, like 3 letters) at the beginning or end of your message. If you are not okay with it, do not include a nickname.
• Original Fiction: You can only submit original fiction.

Listen, I don’t want to rain on anyone’s headcanons, but:

Stede uses pet names like “darling” with Mary. It’s a distancing technique for him. An acceptable way to “show” affection without having to actually, like, doit.

Stede wouldn’t call Ed “darling,” “love,” “sweetheart”… or at least, not thoughtlessly. It’s important that Ed isn’t Mary, isn’t a woman, isn’t someone he needs to have a practiced list of endearments to use because he’d otherwise forget to say anything loving at all.

Ed, for his part, called one of the posh guests on the French ship “love” – when he was feeling cool, confident, and not Blackbeard. Endearments for him are wonderful because they’re a chance to be charming and sweet, which Blackbeard most definitely isn’t.

So Ed might call Stede “sweetheart” because it’s not a script for him, it’s not a practiced and societally acceptable way for him to show affection. It’s acceptance of himself – and love and acceptance of Stede – every time he gives voice to these little loving words.

But Stede’s loving word, his endearment of choice, his signal to Ed that he’s in this with Ed and no one else? That Ed is accepted and loved for who he is and that that is precious to Stede? Thatword?

If you have a big, emotional, self hating meltdown every time someone tells you that you hurt them or crossed a boundary of theirs, then that means you’re not a safe person to say no to - and that’s something you need to work on. Even if you’re genuinely just really upset that you hurt someone, if every attempt at communicating a boundary to you results in the person you hurt having to repeatedly reassure you that you’re not actually a bad person, then you need to work on controlling yourself and taking constructive criticism.

this pride month I am wishing everyone a very stop overanalyzing yourself and just have fun with it. have gay sex. don’t have any sex. try on a new gender. stop caring about gender at all. talk to your doctor about hormones. go on a date. break up with the person you dont love. whatever it is you have been putting off doing by dithering about it in your head. just do that and fully experience how it feels without trying to put it into words. if you still need a word for it later there will be one. they aren’t going anywhere. but people were here before language and there’s only so far language can go in giving you a fulfilling human experience. so if you are hiding behind finding the right words for whatever it is your heart wants i hope this month you get the courage to just do it instead.
